Helderberg hard hit by heavy rains ASHRAF BOOLEY In the wake of last week’s hard-hitting rains, several homes across the Helderberg were severely damaged, leaving hundreds displaced. Even business premises such as the Mediclinic Vergelegen in Somerset West were reported to have experienced flooding. According to Rian Smit, senior forecaster at the Cape Town Weather Office, the Helderberg had 84,2 mm of rainfall last week up until 08:00 on Friday, measured at the Strand rainfall station. Hundreds of people had to evacuate their homes in Kay’s Caravan Park in Strand after the Lourens River burst its banks on Wednesday. Several homes were destroyed and residents had to take shelter in the local Scouts hall. According to Richard Bosman, executive director of Safety and Security for the City of Cape Town, the water level at Kay’s Caravan Park rose to about one metre above ground level. Shocked residents were seen carrying their animals and trying to salvage the few possessions they could after water levels unexpectedly rose at a significant rate. “We knew that the rain was bad, but we didn’t expect that it would flood as much as it did. The water levels started rising after the river burst its banks and suddenly our homes were flooded and our possessions destroyed,” said resident Mary Kukarg in disbelief as she trudged through the water. Kukarg added that the lights also went out as water levels reached to the level of the wall sockets.

Some people struggled to drive through the water while other vehicles were stuck. Residents also carried their possessions to higher levels in order to reduce water damage. Some residents had to be temporarily housed in the Scouts hall while others went to family and friends. “The Kay’s Caravan Park management, in collaboration with the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, arranged that the local Scouts hall be used as an emergency shelter,” says Bosman. He added that hot meals were provided by faith-based organisations in the area. Donavan West, from the organisation Arise Billionaires, also distributed bread to residents last week Thursday. “As a result of damages sustained, repairs and maintenance must be undertaken by the registered owner of the property as this is a private matter,” says Bosman. Other areas in the Helderberg were also hit by heavy rain and several areas were flooded. According to statistics by the City’s Disaster Risk Management, last week’s floods affected over 700 informal homes in Strand alone. Altogether 300 homes were flooded in Rastakamp in Sir Lowry’s Pass, while Sandvlei in Macassar, amongst other areas, was also affected. “Showers will persist until Tuesday (today) with sunny conditions for Wednesday (tomorrow) and Thursday,” says Smit. Flooding can be reported to the City’s Disaster Risk Management on 0860 103 089 and emergencies can be directed to the City’s 107 line. See more photos on page 3.

Last week Friday Helderberg residents were enchanted as Helderberg mountains got hit with snow like many residents have never seen before. Residents across the region said that it’s the first time they have seen so much snow on the mountains. PHOTO: MARK STUART

To help people recover from the effects of last week’s flooding, the organisation Arise Billionaires donated building material and food to residents of Nomzamo. Here Jethro Ceyster drops off some building material for one of the residents.

Violence reported during NUM protest ASHRAF BOOLEY A group of dissatisfied construction workers have been angrily protesting since last week Monday over wage disputes with the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC). This has prevented several workers from going to work and has even turned violent in some cases. Builders, engineers, construction companies and handymen were prevented from entering the Lwandle township, or even getting close to collect their workers. Last week Wednesday the group, who are members of Cosatu’s National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), protested on the N2 en route to Van der Stel train station where they made their way to Bellville to hand over a memorandum listing their demands to SAFCEC. Edward Phibantwe, coordinator of the protest and member of NUM, says

their protest is legal and that he is not aware of any violent actions that have occurred during their protest. But others disagree, with one person saying that he even had to be hospitalised after being beaten with a knopkierie over the head. Gift Mnelpmva claims he was walking near Van der Stel station when he was attacked by protesters and hit with a knopkierie on Monday. “I work at a construction site in Blackheath and a lot of other workers who were not part of the protest were also attacked for going to work,” he says. Amongst their list of demands, Phibantwe says they want a 13% increase in their salaries but are only being offered 6, 5%. “We’ve been in negotiations with SAFCEC for four years already and we’ve always had to compromise. We are still prepared to negotiate and our demands are reasonable,” says Phibantwe. Other demands on their list include more annual leave, four months paid maternity leave, work-

SAFCEC, who represents employers in the civil engineering contracting industry in the current wage negotiations, underwent the bargaining process under the auspices of the Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI) says Annemie Cowley, communications manager at SAFCEC.

“In an effort to resolve ongoing strike action and adjust wages for the lowest paid workers, SAFCEC tabled a 10% wage increase for categories Task Grade 1 to 4 and 8% wage increase for categories Task Grade 5 to 9. In addition, severance benefits for the industry were also improved. “The trade unions, the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) and the Building Construction and Allied Workers Union (BCAWU), are not formally responding to the bold

offer tabled by employers of increases across the board which were guaranteed for three years,” says Cowley. Norman Milne, president of SAFCEC, says they are extremely disappointed that the unions have not formally reacted to this offer from employers “since it is considerably above both CPI and other industry settlements and would have also provided certainty to both employers and employees for the next three years.”

New names for civic centres ASHRAF BOOLEY The City of Cape Town has proposed to change the names of the Old Civic and New Civic Centres in Macassar to Herandien Civic Centre and Kuhn Civic Centre respectively. A notice was published in the Helderberg Gazette last Tuesday, informing readers of the City’s intention, and to invite comments from interested and affected parties. Ward 109 councillor John Heuvel nominated Cecil Herandien and Sidney Kuhn, councillors who were both builders of Macassar, to be honoured in this way. “The subcouncil was involved in sourcing

the information on the background of the names chosen. “Both Herandien and Kuhn were the first councillors in the area. They were nominated because they were known to have greatly contributed to the development of the Macassar community,” says councillor Brett Herron, chairperson of the naming committee, City of Cape Town. However, Herron says this is still subject to a public consultation process which will run during September and which will include a door-to-door campaign. Advertisements will be placed in the local newspapers. The public and interested parties can lodge their objections or support from 1 to 30 September.

Free massage workshops informal settlements Helderbergers interested in the art of massaging, can now be trained in this art. Beauty therapist Natasha Abels will host a series of free massage workshops and demonstrations. Van Niekerk says aspects of the treatment they want to bring to the community is stress relief and personal upliftment. The workshops, which are free of charge, will be held on 7 September. The Oasis Training Centre in Strand has recently launched its new business unit – the Oasis Caring Network. This business idea was born out of the need for their trainee graduates to be employed. After obtaining their certificates in home-based care, graduates struggled to find employment within the care industry environment in the Helderberg. Through this care-giver agency, they employ graduates themselves. Care givers are then deployed to the retirement centres and villages and to private individuals who are in need of care at home, whether the person is disabled, in need of frail care or in need of hospitalisation care.

“We have already found employment for more than 20 of our graduates. Through this business venture we hope to find employment for as many of our care givers as we can,” says Leslie August, executive director of Oasis. Through this new business venture, Oasis Training Centre aims to empower their graduates with employment so that they can in turn provide for their families, which gives them back their dignity and at the same time gives back to the community through their care and support services. For more information on the care giver network, call Oasis on 021 845 8860 or visit www.oasistraining.co.za.

Celebrating women on a mountain Women on top of the world. This was the theme for the Somerset West Asian Chinese Martial Arts Wellness Centre’s women’s month celebration which saw over 200 people gather for Tai Chi on top of Signal Hill to celebrate women and their achievements recently.

WILNA TO REPRESENT WP: Wilna Eybers from the Strand Athletic Club was selected to represent the Western Province in the South African Cross Country Championship on Saturday 14 September.

This was in partnership with Master Cari Shurma from Tai Chi for Kids, SAPS Men for Change as well as Metro police’s Men for Change and SAPS and Metro police women’s network. The program brought together women from across the spectrum – from law enforcement to women working in service delivery. “All men are born out of women and this is the very reason why women must be celebrated,” says Master Niklaas Thysen. Thysen says the idea of the event was for “men to put and make women

feel like they are on top of the world.” The women on top of the world event was “to celebrate women, to admire our beautiful city, to take women where they can feel relaxed and be totally stress-free and to introduce women to a healthy form of exercise like Tai Chi,” according to Thysen. The facilitator and presenter of the event was Master Cari Shurman from the United States and Master Sgt Thysen from the Somerset West police. Tai Chi for Kids will be introduced within pre-primary, primary and high schools across the Western Cape during their road show from September until October. According to Thysen, he has already secured partnerships with provincial government, education, social development, community safety as well as sports and recreation for tai chi as a mass development programme within schools in the Western Cape.

Drum majorette returns from Texas The 12-year-old drum majorette Ashlin Adams from Strand, who was awarded DistrictMail’s Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for August last year, has returned from Texas where she competed in an international drum majorette competition, along with her fellow South African team. The South African team brought home 36 out of 38 medals, says Adams. This comes after she was selected for the South African drum majorette team, where she also competed in the South African Drum Majorette Championships in Pietermaritzburg last year. She is a pupil at Dr GJ Joubert Primary and was rewarded for her outstanding individual performances when she received her Western Province colours and South African colours in 2011. Adams says her experience in Texas was amazing as it was her first time going abroad. “I would love to go back again, but it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It was great performing on an international level,” says Adams.

Life skills through sport The Helderberg Academy, a nonprofit organisation based in Somerset West, teaches several children around the Helderberg life skills through sports. Beth Rudge, founder of the academy, says that after seeing a lack of physical education in some communities in South Africa when compared to England where she is from, she decided to start an academy to teach youngsters valuable life skills. “We want to create stability and have already seen big changes in some of the children. We especially encourage them to set their goals.

We hope to leave this with the communities so that they will be able to run it themselves one day,” she says. The academy trains children from Macassar and Lwandle weekly and during school holidays. On Thursdays they coach soccer in Lwandle at the sportsfield, with a steady number of more than 20 children that regularly attend. In Macassar they have rugby coaching for up to 30 children between the ages of 11 and 18 years at Macassar High.

Locals to compete at pool championships The following local players and referees have been selected to represent the Western Province Country Region (WPCR) at the SA 8-ball pool open championships at Kleinplasie in Worcester from 29 September until 5 October: Fernando Rudolph (Macassar); David Afrika; Wayne Woest; Junaid Smit (all from Strand); Elias Nomakhakhayi; Renetse Mokhele (both from Lwandle). The referees are Jason Onke (Strand) and Edward Visagie (Macassar). The junior u. 18 and u. 23 players selected for the SA 8ball pool open championships are all from Lwandle and Zola.

The players that will be competing from 22 to 28 September also at Kleinplasie in Worcester are the following: Tshepo Jama; Thobani Kilimani; Ishmael Mtehetwha; Chumani Meteni; Momelezi Duka; Lungeli Yolisa; Songezo Mxabanisi; Tukuluho Tlhatsi; Thabang Tlhatsi; Sivemathi Mtsi; Ayabonga Mgobaza; Buhle Msongelwa; Athenkosi Stemelo; Lephallo Ramotsamai; Sandi Nyathela; Siphamamdla Bulaiya; Mpmelelo Gqola; Tsepalang Leohla.
