Know your HIV/Aids status NICOLE MCCAIN

World Aids Day was held on Saturday 1 December, with a clear message from government and NGOs – know your status. As part of a campaign by the health department’s sub-eastern district, a testing drive was held at Khanyolwethu High School in Lwandle. There were also staff on hand to provide blood pressure tests, family planning counselling and dental services Sithembiso Magubane, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health, says

about 14% of all those tested in the Helderberg were HIV positive, with almost 15 000 tests carried out during the 2011/2012 year. This is slightly higher than the provincial average of 10%, where over 900 000 tests were done on people between the ages of 12 and 70. However, Magubane says it is difficult to account for increases, as the number of tests carried out differs from year to year. He says that awareness campaigns also play a role in encouraging people to come forward for testing, as well as improved prevention strategies

such as male and female condoms, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) programme, HIV counselling and testing and increased access to Antiretroviral Treatment (ART). He added that testing is provided at all public health facilities in the area and at nonmedical sites. There are two in the area: one in Masincedane in Lwandle and the Philippi Trust in Somerset West. For details, phone: ) Phambili Community Development on

Like peaches and cream

Tuin met liefde gekweek

BY DANIQUE FULLARD

NICOLE MCCAIN

Peaches are in! I bought my first punnet of small, freshly picked dessert peaches last week and I was delighted by their sweetness. Having indulged in those for the short time they lasted, I now understand the madness in Thomas Walker’s quote in which he claims, “Life is better than death, I believe, if only because it is less boring and because it has fresh peaches in it.” This may be the voice of a radical peach lover, but there is some sense in this brave claim. This fruit originates from Asia and has throughout history maintained its cultural value in many Eastern cultures. In Chinese mythology, “peaches of immortality” appear in many folktales; this fruit with its mystical value granted longevity to all who ate them. This said, they’re in season, they are so versatile and they’re healthy, which makes them great to use as a snack or in many dishes. One can do so much with this sweet fruit. Why not cut slices in a fruit salad, toss some slithers in a salad (works well in a chicken salad with mayo dressing), make your own peach chutney, make your own chicken sosaties with dried peaches, or try this simple recipe with your next braai? Or, as I prefer, simply slice and serve with freshly whipped cream with a drizzle of honey. Grilled fresh peaches can be used as a dessert with ice cream, or served with a savory dish like roast pork or game.

Recipe for 6 grilled fresh peach halves: Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 5 minutes Ingredients 3 large ripe peaches, stone removed, halved 1 tbsp light brown sugar 1 tbsp melted butter Small pinch of nutmeg Pinch of salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste, optional (omit if making a dessert) Preparation In a small bowl mix the sugar, butter, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper. Carefully brush the grates of a hot grill with an oiled paper towel. Place the peach halves on the grill cut side down. Grill for 2 minutes and turn. Immediately spoon and spread a little of the sugar mixtures over the hot peach halves. Cook for another 2–3 minutes, remove and serve hot, room temperature or cold. • Danique Fullard contributes food columns to our sister publication, the Breederivier Gazette, in Robertson.

No excuse not to get tested World Aids Day took place on 1 December, and in the spirit of knowing one’s status, the Gazette asked readers if they thought enough was being done to make HIV and AIDS testing freely available.

Jeffrey Matshaba from Stellenbosch says it’s not just about services that the government provides, but what communities do with it that matters. “The government is doing enough, but it’s what we do with the facilities provided that’s important. People just turn a blind eye and ignore the information that is everywhere. It’s so easy to find information on how to get tested. You can even ask at police stations and community centres.”

The government is doing a good job by providing testing facilities, but it’s just irresponsible people who don’t make use of it. You can get tested at clinics, and even at some pharmacies.”

Rebecca Zinlindile from Nomzamo says that while the government advertises regularly to tell people where they can get tested, information also comes from community members. “There are still a lot of people who don’t know where to get tested, but people in the community who do know motivate them to get tested.” PHOTOS: NICOLE MCCAIN

“Jy kan kliniek toe gaan, of jouself laaat toets tydens gratis toetsdae by ’n gemeenskapsaal.

Lwandle gets tested Lwandle residents were urged to know their HIV status on World Aids Day (Saturday), with free testing done at Khanyolwethu High School by the health department’s sub-eastern district. Sithembiso Magubane, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health, says around 15 000 tests were carried out in the Helderberg last year, with around 14% of those HIV positive.

Lina Menerha (65) was one of the first Lwandle residents to have their HIV tests done by Mpumelelo Xelelo (right) on Saturday, as part of a campaign by the health department’s sub-eastern district for World Aids day.

Concerned Sector 2-resident Lieutenant-Colonel Errol Merkeur, Station commissioner, Macassar Police, says: “It is of utmost importance that the community becomes involved in policing. Structures such as the Community Police Forum (CPF), Sector Police Forum and neighbourhood watches are community based structures which form part of community policing. The station management in collaboration with the CPF urged the involvement of communities at imbizos, but still we as CPF and police are struggling to get the community involved. Macassar Police strive to serve the community at large and also to render a professional service, but without the involvement of the community it lacks on certain levels of policing. The management of Macassar Police and the CPF invite the community to report poor service delivery or contact the station commander and his team to better service delivery at local level.

Farmworkers are set to resume their strike today (4 December), after the government was unable to meet their request for a minimum wage of R150 a day. According to Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, by law a new sectoral determination for a minimum wage could only take place 12 months after the last wage adjustment in March this year. This means workers could face another four months of waiting. Cosatu reportedly said on the weekend that workers were calling for a day of action across the agricultural sector in South Africa. Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer has said the police are ready for the protests. Sixteen towns were affected by strikes, with local farm workers at Lourensford Estate in Somerset West also downing tools.

There are many reasons why they do; they may want to move on with their lives and don’t want to go through a court case.” Lourens is concerned that there is not enough infrastructure, such as safe houses, to implement the review.

The orchid grower from Vergelegen NICOLE MCCAIN As a testimony to his many years of tending to the gardens at Vergelegen Estate, William Jackson’s house now overflows with the bright colours and delicate petals of the orchids he lovingly tends. William started growing orchids before his retirement in 2006. He now has over 50 plants. “I always wanted to continue gardening after my retirement,” says 71-year-old William. “But it is hard work which requires a lot of attention.” Orchids need care all year round, explains William, who gives the plants a special compost mix to keep them healthy. William learnt to care for orchids while he was working as a gardener

on the Vergelegen Estate, where he still lives. He was born on the farm in 1941 and attended school there until grade 6 when he needed to help his father support the family. William was given a job at the homestead gardens and learnt everything he knows about plants on the job. He often worked with roses and learnt about orchids from a Portuguese gardener that the Barlow family, the farmowners at the time, had brought here. William says he also taught the two Barlow sons, Charles and TomTom, to garden. “It was difficult,” says William, “because they wanted to do things their way.” After Anglo American bought the farm William was given the opportunity to complete his schooling,

New gardens for Nissen Park Chris Nissen Park received an early Christmas present of 16 new gardens, sponsored by engineering company Pragma, on Friday. As part of Pragma’s end-of-year Corporate Social Investment project, the company’s employees created new beds, planted a range of vegetables and erected wind resistant fences to protect the garden. The objective of this project is to ensure social and economic growth within Chris Nissen Park by working with a number of the residents. Staff members have also donated funds towards garden tools that will be donated to the new garden owners. “I’m very proud of the people who came here to plant the gardens,” says Rina Booysen, who was one of the lucky residents to receive a gar-

den. “My husband, Moses, died 7 months ago and he used to do all the gardening. I’m going to do it myself now, unless my grandchildren help me.” The initial vegetable garden project was started by Gerrie van Niekerk, a Somerset West resident. He and Paul Wantza, a Chris Nissen Park resident started a garden in Paul’s yard with the condition that Paul passes on his gardening knowledge to other members of the community. This grew to nine gardens, before Pragma’s involvement. Pragma also spent time at crèches in Chris Nissen Park, entertaining the children with painting and drawing activities, and a surprise lucky packet.

Children have a fun day Helderberg Hospital, together with chartered accountants Pyper Turner Incorporated, hosted a Christmas party for children living with HIV/Aids last week. It took place from 08:00 on Friday 23 November at the Helderberg Nature Reserve. According to Dr Karin Stuve from the Infectious Disease Clinic at the hospital, about 200 children, from babies to 15-year-olds, attend their clinic for medication. “Every year we host a Christmas party for the kids. We try to reward them for another year of taking their medication and just generally hanging in there through the sometimes bad times of their illness. The community, both private and corporate were very generous in their support, allowing us to give the kids a

very special party,” she said. She added that some of the highlights of the day were a visit from the fire department, who after an entertaining and informative safety talk, turned on the hoses. “It was fantastic to see the kids dancing around in the water spray so full of energy and the joys of life.” Hanlie Roux, one of the staff members at Pyper Turner, says the company became involved with the project by means of a sponsorship as an employee’s wife is a doctor at the clinic. They then decided to become involved by means of a sponsorship. “We sponsored some cooler bags for the kids which they can use to keep their medicine cool. The staff assisted the nursing staff with the activities and the day was a great success,” she said.

Mickyle Hendricks (11) glimlag breed oor haar geskenkpak.

Children enjoyed activities such as jumping castles, face painting and a modelling show. They were also spoilt with a surprise visit from Santa Clause and officers from the fire department.

Blessing is in the ‘giving’ Macassar residents were treated to a warm lunch recently when the local Muslim community celebrated the start of the Islamic New Year (Muharram). A few Muslim women reached out to more than 100 disadvantaged members of their community when they prepared a healthy and filling meal for them. Qohnietah Salasa says being generous and reaching out to the poor is a great giver of blessings. “Our generosity towards others will lead to us being blessed by the Almighty.” Salasa wished all Muslims a prosperous and fruitfull year ahead.
