A trench, dug by the City of Cape Town to alleviate flooding, has become clogged with refuse.
Riemvasmaak residents have been complaining about a bad smell from refuse and the portable toilets in the area.

and is currently “looking into the problem” in an attempt to find a solution. According to Philemon Mashoko, director for the water and sanitation department at the City of Cape Town, there are “16 chemical toilets in Riemvasmaak that are serviced three times a week by a service provider”. He says the department’s service standard for providing services to residents living in the informal settlements is one toilet to be shared amongst five households, and one standpipe to service 25 households within a walking distance of 100 metres. However, says Mashoko, technical and physical challenges may cause a deviation from that standard. Community leader Lionel Benjamin says that the toilets are only one of the reasons for
the stench and flies. He says a trench surrounding the site, which was dug by the City of Cape Town as a way to prevent flooding last winter, does not allow the water to drain away. He says the stagnant water is a breeding ground for flies and other insects. Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for human settlements, says “the directorate will do a site investigation and will take remedial measures if necessary”. On top of this, Benjamin says household refuse has become a big problem on the site. The drainage trench is clogged with refuse, and Benjamin says household waste is often not collected but left to stand in the sun. Rustim Keraan, director for the solid waste management department in the city says, “Eve-
ry single household in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village receives a door-to-door refuse removal service every week, with free plastic bags provided. In addition, ongoing cleaning work is carried out in the area. Over and above this there have been a number of job-creation projects focusing on cleaning. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the community believing that if they complain about cleaning in the area, this may create additional jobs.” The site is due to have 177 emergency houses built on it, and according to Sonnenberg, the human settlements directorate hopes to award the contract for civil works including stormwater, on the site on 11 February. Following this, there is a mandatory 21 day appeal period. “If there are no appeals, it is hoped that work will commence on 11 March 2013.”
Uphill battle of Riemvasmaak Residents of Riemvasmaak in Sir Lowry’s Pass are battling a foul smell that seems to be coming from the portable toilets around the houses. About 50 families use the toilets on the site. However, some of the toilets are damaged and residents have been complaining about the stench and flies. One Riemvasmaak resident says that going to the toilet is an ordeal. The toilet nearest to her house has no door and is often blown over during strong winds. “What must I do? I’m a woman, I can’t just stand like a man. There is also a bad smell. And the flies!” Middleton says he is aware of the situation,

Courses to grow your own low-cost garden Readers might think they don’t have the space or the money to grow a garden, but according to Vanita Drew, who runs Soil of Life gardening courses, all you need is commitment and a bit of imagination. Vanita teaches locals to garden using recyclable materials – everything from eggshells for compost, to using shoes as pots for plants. “Gardening isn’t difficult, and it doesn’t cost money,” explains Vanita. Her courses cost R15, and participants are given a range of seeds as well as bags of compost and mulch. The course runs over eight weeks and involves teamwork in all of the participants’ gardens. And according to Vanita, watching gardens grow from nothing is the greatest reward. “It’s nice to see when people are proud of their gardens.” Vanita has already run three courses, and is currently looking for another five or six Strand residents to join her group. She conducts lessons across the Helderberg. For more information, contact Vanita Drew at vinnydrew@telkomsa.net or on 083 632 0078.

Rescue place for animals Township Animal Rescue is in desperate need of new premises and is appealing to Helderberg residents to come to its aid. The welfare organisation was started eight years ago to care for the animals in Lwandle and Nomzamo, and is run by Jillian Cunningham and her daughter Vanessa. Township Animal Rescue gets called out to around five injured or sick animals a day, ranging from dogs and cats to sheep. The animals are taken to the vet and new homes are found for many of the animals. Many Lwandle and Nomzamo residents even bring their animals to Township Animal Rescue as a last home, when they are unable to continue caring for them. The gratitude of the people they help is overwhelming. “One man walked into Somerset West after his neighbour had threatened to kill his puppy. He was taking his puppy from shop to shop, looking for someone who could help him. When he eventually came to us, he just took my hand and said thank you,” says Vanessa. Their current location is in a residential area and after complaints from neighbours they will have to move. They have temporarily homed many of the animals in kennels, but these will have to be moved by March. Contact 021 855 l824 or 084 423 599l for more information.

In2Food suffers damage NICOLE MCCAIN Protests outside Strand business In2Food, which had begun on 23 January, intensified last Thursday with protesters throwing stones at the company’s building. Community members were due to meet with representatives of In2Food, which they accuse of not employing enough locals, on Thursday. Monwabisi Rasmeni, speaking on behalf of the protesters, confirmed the meeting, but says that the In2Food representatives had already left by the time he and his fellow community members arrived. According to Charly Nolte of In2Food, “The community spokespersons did not attend as undertook and after waiting for a half-hour it was decided to abandon the meeting.” A crowd gathered outside In2Food at around 16:00. The stones left several windows broken and damaged both passing and police vehicles. Spokesperson for the Lwandle police, Constable Mthokozisi Gama, confirmed that two cases of malicious damage to property had been opened – one for the In2Food property, and one for damage to passing vehicles. Currently, no arrests have been made. “It has become clear that the motive behind this public disruption is self-interest by a small group that wishes to hide behind the smokescreen of ‘community’ interest,” Nolte said.
Windows damaged in a protest at In2Food. “In2food understands fully that this small group does not represent the community of Lwandle at large, therefore it will continue to support both the many social support initiatives currently in place in Lwandle, as well as the practice of sourcing employees from Lwandle through its existing practices.” Rasmeni was not available to comment on this allegation. Community members demanded that at least 50% of the company’s employees come from Strand. Nolte says 95% of the company’s employees reside in the Helderberg basin.
Brunnel Rudolph, by 082 717 3656 te bel.
45 arrests in Lwandle
Lyk by polisie
Lwandle police conducted a crime-fighting weekend operation (25 to 27 January), resulting in 45 arrests. In stop-and-search operations they arrested 21 suspects for possession of drugs; four for possession of stolen property; and one for possession of a dangerous weapon. Shebeens selling liquor without a licence were raided. They arrested five suspects for dealing in liquor without a licence, and confiscated 19 395 F of liquor. Fourteen suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in a roadblock conducted by the police and the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement unit.
Hennie Swart by 021 857 7107 bel.

Lwandle’s red team The Red Lions Football Club is not just another team in Lwandle. The team is the dream come true of resident Themba Bawana, who felt he could make a difference in the lives of young people through sport. “I’ve always loved sport, and I decided to start something small to keep the youth off the street,” explains 26-year-old Themba. The team is not only for recreation, it also keeps vulnerable young people away from gangs and drugs. “It keeps the guys off the street. I’ve helped many of them find work as well. This way, they go to work and then straight to practice, and then after that it’s already dark.” Themba says the team has faced
several challenges. He started the football club in May last year with no equipment. He ended up selling his personal computer and cell phone to pay for a kit for the 21 players, aged between 14 and 26. But shortly after his sacrifice, his mother’s house, in which the kit was stored, burnt to the ground. The team eventually received a replacement kit sponsored by Arccon. Many of the players still don’t have soccer boots, and the team is in need of balls and cones with which to train. For most of it, Themba is still putting up his own money. “My wife fights with me a lot,” he laughs. For more information, contact Themba on 073 462 2878.

Vir meer inligting, kontak die First Fitness-gimnasium by 021 857 1271.
