‘You are not welcome here’ NICOLE MCCAIN
“We know who you are. We know where you live. We know the number of your house. And we want to tell you: you are not welcome here. Go back to where you came from, and take your drugs with you.” This was the message almost 100 Broadlands Village residents delivered to houses in their community that they believe are selling drugs. Members of the community gathered on Saturday to march against drug dealing in Broadlands Village. The march saw protestors stop-
ping outside the houses they suspect of dealing drugs, to “name and shame” dealers. Andrew Arnolds, head of City of Light, the organisation which lead the protest, says drugs in the community are widespread, with what he estimates as almost 30 houses selling them in the complex. A 12-year-old boy, heading up the march, says, “It’s a dream come true to have this march, because the drugs must stop. Every day, I see drugs.” Georgina Appollis, one of the community members marching against drug dealing in the neighbourhood, says, “We’re all trying to raise
children. The children can’t play on the veld because drug deals take place there.” Another protester, Patrick Mahawula, says, “Drugs are widely sold. There is no future for Broadlands Village if the drug problem continues.” Constable Mthokozisi Gama of the Lwandle Police confirmed that there are a number of houses in the area from which drugs are sold, but the exact number he could not confirm. “There is a very serious drug problem in the community, and we have ongoing operations in the area,” says Gama. Arnolds is adamant that the community will
rid itself of drug dealing, claiming that two of the dealers have already left the community. “We are not here to play. Our children’s lives depend on it. We’re going to take every step to rid the area of drug dealers.”

House gutted by fire in Casablanca NICOLE MCCAIN Casablanca residents watched in shock as a house in Anneke Close burnt to the ground last Wednesday. Theo Layne, spokesperson for Fire and Rescue Services at the City of Cape Town, said they responded to the fire just after 10:00.
Layne says the cause of fire is suspected to be as a result of sparks from a short circuit in the electrical wiring, which ignited the insulation and then spread through the house. Gloria Mosala, the owner of the house, says she lost everything. While the shell of the house remained standing, all her furniture
was destroyed by the fire. A couple and their baby, who were living in an informal structure at the back of the house, also saw their own house raised to the ground in the blaze. If anyone would like to assist Gloria Mosala in any way, she can be phoned on 078 725 6632.

Feelings mixed over 2011 Census results NICOLE MCCAIN Results of the 2011 Census, completed in October last year, were released on Tuesday by Statistics South Africa. The results showed that the population of South Africa has grown by 7 million people in the last ten years, to a total of almost 52 million. The Western Cape has almost 6 million residents, an increase of more than a million since 2001. There was an increase in the number of people older than 20 who received schooling, with almost 30% having completed grade 12, and another almost 40% having at least some secondary education. This was an increase of 5% and 2% respectively over the last ten years. Fewer Western Cape residents are living in informal homes and over 90% of homes
use electricity for lighting, with an increase of 5% from 2001. There has been a 3% increase in the number of homes using flush toilets, bringing the total up to just under 90%. However, the amount using the bucket system as toilets has remained the same over the last ten years. Census 2011 is the third biggest democratic census to be conducted in South Africa, and saw 6 000 field workers employed to collect data from homes. The aim of a census is to provide government with information essential for planning and development. According to Stats SA, in every census, some households are missed or counted twice. During November 2011, a post enumeration survey was conducted, and the findings adjusted accordingly. The Gazette asked Helderberg residents what they thought of the census results.
“Dis goed om almal te tel,” meen Joan Geldenhuys van Strand. “Ek het nie baie van die resultate gehoor nie, maar ek dink nie 50 miljoen mense is baie nie. Dis ’n groot land.”
Mxolisi Ndebele of Nomzamo says that while he volunteered during the counting process in the Eastern Cape, he thinks the census is a waste of time. “We’re overpopulated. Nothing will change that. The increase is due to immigrants and young girls having children. The government should stop counting.”
Rosemary Sundgren from Somerset West says she wasn’t surprised to hear the population had grown. She also thinks that service delivery in the province is on track. “Tax payers have to carry a large burden in supporting the unemployed, but the service delivery in the Western Cape is far superior to other provinces.”

Porsha Yangaphi of Nomzamo says the increase in the population is worrisome. “It’s a lot of people. And there is already so many people without work and a high crime rate. People will suffer.”
Monwabisi MtyiwazoI, who works in Somerset West, says, “It’s good to have a census. It helps guide development. You need to know how many people you’re planning for. However, the question is whether they can implement the plans. You can have all the statistics in the world, but they won’t help if you can’t implement your plans.”

Tennants have rights AND obligations From your lead article (Standoff in farm eviction, 9 October) it becomes clear that there is a general expectation of the people that a free house is a God-given right for which the occupants have to bear no obligation to anyone. It appears to me that the ruling party, a socialist party, has missed out over the previous 18 years to educate its voters sufficiently that rights in an egalitarian society translate into obligation for the individual who claims such rights. In true spirit of the Constitution we are empowered, each of us, to have a share in a social partnership which grants to us the right to proper housing, to clean water, to a healthy environment and so on. We are granted the right to private property under the protection of the state and all its organs. We have to pay tribute, however, in the form of allowing those same rights to everyone else under the same Constitution. That very same concession to others seems to be too big to sink in. Everyone wants to see it differently so as to benefit greatest from

the effort of others. Not so egalitarian, is it now? The 11 different languages and the individual in his scheming. If I had read the same article in Afrikaans, I am quite sure nothing would have come over so blatantly anymore. With Xhosa I expect the salient points in the article even more blurred until we reach a point in someone’s vernacular where it makes total sense to have the world stand on its head. This is a prime example to show that we do need an education based on one language so that we at least can be sure of what is what. That the “tenants” are not supposed to live there but moved in anyway is not mentioned in the article. Only that the “lovingly restored homes” have no roof and the water they draw is brown and no one cleans the toilets for them or pulls out the weeds around their habitat, we learn from the report. To pay rental perhaps would justify their complaints. But they refuse.

Drugs are allowed to enter and exit Broadlands Village at any time. But the community and the residents of Broadlands Village are not allowed to have a peaceful march against drugs. One of Multi Projects officials tried to put a stop to Saturday’s kid’s games and antidrug march. On websites Broadlands Village, Strand is advertised as “ comfort and security” and “number of green spaces where the children can run freely or even play soccer”. Although we had permission from the City of Cape Town, the official of Multi Projects advised our representative that we had no permission to be in Broadlands Village, because it is private property, and the mostly resident children, whom were playing on the open field, must be removed. Multi Projects were invited to partake in the anti-drug march, but were unwilling to do so. Clearly the official was not acting in the interest of the many residents of Broad-
lands Village, who came out in their numbers to show their disapproval of the drug outlets in their neighbourhood. We wish to thank the neighbouring communities, church leaders and mostly the residents of Broadlands Village for supporting the anti-drug march which took place on Saturday. Also a special word of thanks to the Traffic Department, who rendered a great service to the community. We will not stop fighting for our children and families who are addicts and who are being used as drug runners/mules where they end up in prison and the real culprits are enjoying their freedom. We will march again in Broadlands Village and we are determined to turn that area around into a proud neighbourhood where residents and their children can enjoy a safe and drug-free environment.

SCHOOL CLOSURES I would like to give my opinion on the vox pops on the closing of schools (Helderberg Gazette page 3, 23 October). As a pupil at a local high school I personally feel that the Western Cape Education Department should close a few schools around the Helderberg because here are too many schools in the area. I feel that all of the schools do
not get the necessary attention that they should, so closing down a few schools wouldn’t be that bad. There are various schools in the area and closing down one or two wouldn’t be such a big thing. Yes, it won’t be easy at first but with time things will get better. Houses for Riemvasmaak NICOLE MCCAIN Six months ago, Sir Lowry’s Pass residents took to the streets in protest against a lack of service delivery. The protest on 9 May saw mayor Patricia de Lille and premier Helen Zille visit the community, with several promises to improve the living conditions of residents. The biggest concern in the community was a lack of adequate housing, as many of the informal homes were below the floodline and experienced heavy flooding. “Ek mis my ou plek in die Rooidakkies. Daar was die reën ten minste nie in my ou huis nie.”
“Ons is soos ’n familie,” sê Victor Jonkers. “Ons is almal nes ons is,” sê ’n ander inwoner, Anna Diedericks. “Ons is Riemvasmakers.”

Civic Association march against drugs The Temperance Town Civic Association held a march against shebeens and drug dens in their community recently. The march, during which a silent prayer session was held, grew to 60 people as they moved from the Temperance Town play park to the Gordon’s Bay police station, said Carol Misrole, the association’s chairperson. Misrole says their aim is to engage lawmakers in finding a way to prevent easy access to drugs and alcohol, especially in vulnerable communities.
The Somerset West Main Road will soon be a scene of colourful bright Christmas lights.

A last bash before the closing of Tonko Primary An outreach was held at Tonko Bosman Primary School on Tuesday 30 October. After the announcement by the Western Cape Education Department that the school would be closing down, the Life Foundation,

Lourensford’s own soccerfield Lourensford Estate opened its soccerfield on Friday 2 November by hosting a sports day for farm workers of the several farms owned by the company Karsten. Piet Karsten, CEO, says that the day was held to bring together all their employees, across the different farms in the Western Cape, and to build spirit. Twelve teams came from as far as Ceres, Piketberg, Hexriver and Gouda as well as the Lourensford farm to compete in a soccer and netball tournament. The soccer field was built for permanent and seasonal workers on the farm to enjoy throughout the year.

Young trainer uses sports skills to uplift youth NICOLE MCCAIN The Helderberg Academy is not only teaching children to hone their sports skills, but is also giving them life skills. Targeting vulnerable children in the areas of Sir Lowry’s Pass, Lwandle and Macassar, the 25-year-old who started the Helderberg Academy has been working to change the children’s lives through sport. Beth Rudge, a second grade physical education teacher from England, started the Helderberg Academy in July. Beth was struck by the need for sport in African schools, and the impact that the lack of sport was having on children’s emotional, physical and social development. She noticed that children grow up before their time, because they are often forced to take on the roles of absent parents. Beth refers to this as the fatherless generation (children who grow up without a positive male role model in their lives) and aims to address that gap with her programme. The academy teaches the children life skills through sport, explains Beth. This means that in a game of soccer, when teaching a child to score a goal, the lesson can also be applied to life. “We teach the children to keep their eye on the ball, to kick through the ball, and to follow through with their body. This can be applied to goals in life – focusing on the goals, looking at the future beyond the goal, and pushing through to achieve the goal.” The academy runs weekly training for the children at the Helderberg Christian Church in Somerset West. After starting with only 10 children, the group has now grown to 27. And, Beth says she used the opportunity to work on another of her aims: building integration.

Coach John Boyce with some of the athletes. She says when the academy started, she noticed that children from different communities tended to keep to themselves. However, after four months, they have built friendships. “When they play, it’s as if everything falls away.”
Despite the academy’s successes so far, they only have funding for the start-up project, and are looking for sponsors, either for children or individual projects, from next year. For information, contact Beth Rudge on 076 723 7471 or beth@helderbergacademy.co.za
