Bring on the braai HEDDA MITTNER
Famed for its penguins, fynbos and natural beauty, the village of Betty’s Bay can now lay claim to another title – the home of certified braai masters. South Africa’s first extreme cuisine reality series, The Ultimate Braai Master, will premiere on SABC 3 on 13 September, and among the contestants are Betty’s Bay’s own Ronel Theron and Billy Stanley. Chosen from over 7 400 entrants countrywide, this culinary duo – known as The Stoned Olives – has survived several auditions and elimination rounds to be chosen as one of the 15 finalists who will compete in a series of gruelling outdoor cooking challenges in a 52-day, 8 000 km road trip. Friends and family gathered at the San-
down Blues restaurant in Kleinmond on Thursday evening to wish them well and give them a send-off they’ll never forget. There were snacks and wine, and live music courtesy of a special appearance by Tribal Echo. After Louis van Heerden’s speech and the hand-over of goody bags from HangklipKleinmond Tourism, this popular local band performed several songs in honour of Ronel and Billy. They were clearly overwhelmed, and the diminutive Ronel, who had to get up on a table to be seen, thanked everyone for their goodwill and support. Ronel, a web designer, graphic artist and publisher, and Billy, who runs an auto spares business and is a “hardcore local ocean fanatic”, stood out from the thousands of television hopefuls right from the start. Their popularity has as much to do with their braai skills as their cheeky, exuberant on-air pre-
sence and their sustainable, eco-conscious food ethos. Using only self-sourced products, they wowed the judges at the regional cookoff by turning a single fish – a fresh galjoen that was still alive the previous afternoon – into three complete meals. “With no waste,” said Ronel proudly. “A beautiful thing to teach a hungry nation.” As ambassadors for the unique biosphere they live in, The Stoned Olives took every opportunity to literally wear their pride – whether with brightly coloured “Guardians of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve” T-shirts or in full wetsuit regalia, complete with spear gun. The Ultimate Braai Master is the brainchild of TV celebrity chef Justin Bonello, and among the gourmet judges are executive chef Bertus Basson of Stellenbosch’s top-rated Overture restaurant and Marthinus Ferreira,
who has been associated with iconic international chefs Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal. The winning team will receive a cash prize of R500 000, a new Renault 2,5 L Koleos Dynimique SUV and a state-of-the-art Cadac Braai Maxx, – and the title of South Africa’s very first ultimate braai masters. To vote for The Stoned Olives, go to www.ultimatebraaimaster.com; you can follow their progress on Facebook and Twitter. ) See the photos on page 5.

After about two months of stormy protests in the town, a new Bot River Community Forum committee of 17 people was constituted to represent residents in negotiations. Sunday’s feedback meeting was chaired by Peter Sinclair, manager of the Bot River Advice and Development Centre. It was decided a public meeting would be held with the municipality, during which a memorandum of residents’ grievances would be handed over. The residents decided that deadlines would be sought against their 42 requests, and only with these would the Bot River Community Forum sign. The memorandum must also be signed by Mpho Mogale, executive director of the Department of Cooperative Governance, who mediated in the first round of negotiations. The disbanded Bot River Community Forum was reinstated at a public meeting last Tuesday. The committee’s 17 members represent various sectors of society, including the business and church sectors. Theewaterskloof municipal manager Stan Wallace says the municipality welcomes their decision, and looks forward to constructive cooperation with the new committee. Community Safety MEC Dan Plato expressed his support for the negotiation process at a public meeting on Thursday night attended by Wallace, Theewaterskloof mayor Chris Punt, Overberg District mayor Lincoln de Bruyn, and Bot River ward councillor Pearl Stanfliedt, among others. Plato said he and local government MEC Anton Bredell would be involved in thenegotiations.“Communityleaders must now also come to the table and take hands with the municipality.” Plato also addressed matters of safety, and said, “If you plunder, you will be arrested.” This comes after accusations that police officers looked past the looting of house shops in Valhalla Park in the Cape Peninsula. Plato said he had not received any complaints about the unrest unit’s action in Bot River, and that no local police officers were under suspicion for not taking appropriate action. Captain Gerrit Botes, acting head of visible policing for the Caledon police, admitted yesterday it had been difficult for the local police to take
charge. “The roads were blocked, and after that the protesters broke up into groups and simultaneously plundered the shops. There were groups who watched us and threw stones as soon as we moved closer.” Five Caledon police vehicles were damaged. “Their main aim was to burn down the OK Minimark, but we were able to stop them.” Plato emphasised that vandalism and violence would not be tolerated. Ahead of Thursday night’s meeting, upset residents demanded to know why Plato was there when Bredell was the MEC designated to address their grievances. Plato said the meeting had not been arranged by the municipality, but formed part of his oversight visits to address crime in rural towns. People then took the opportunity to raise their grievances. One resident asked what he should do if his wife, wanting to go to work, were not allowed to leave Bot River during a protest. Plato advised him to lay a charge of intimidation with the police. Anthony Appel, former spokesperson of the Bot River Residents’ Association, which assisted in arranging the initial service delivery protest of Monday 28 May, said in his turn that the problem in Bot River was poor service delivery, and that residents had expected Bredell at the meeting. He also asked why the municipality had not yet made it known that Pearl Stanfliedt had resigned as deputy mayor. Punt said Stanfliedt had resigned as deputy mayor so she could spend more time in her ward, and that the new deputy mayor would be elected at the council meeting on 26 July. In response to Gazette’s question of what the municipality, police and MEC could do to reassure people while they fear for their safety, Plato said there was no danger. “It is my opinion, after tonight’s meeting, that there is peace in Bot River.” Upon enquiry, Captain Gerrit Botes said that if there were complaints about the Bot River police, he could be phoned on 082 469 1015. Residents expressed dissatisfaction at the length of time police investigations take, and Botes again invited residents to contact him directly with their complaints. He said 12 officers are allocated to Bot River, enough for two per shift. Even so, Botes said it was rare for residents to complain that officers were not available when needed. “Where possible we will place extra officers in Bot River to man the community service centre,” he added. He said the police station offered a 24-hour service, and that a vehicle was always available.

The last great fire in the Overstrand caused a tremendous amount of damage, and thankfully no loss of life occurred. The fire spread from Gordon’s Bay and devastated large tracts of land as far afield as Kleinmond. I remember driving through thick clouds of smoke along Clarence Drive just outside Rooi Els, an hour before that section of the road was closed. The scene reminded me of Dante’s Inferno, which was echoed by Puccini’s Madam Butterfly playing on the car stereo. It all seemed so surreal, almost as if nature had finally lost patience with us and decided to punish us for our disregard of its abundance. Mountain fires can be particularly cruel in that they have a destructive mind of their own, and will leap over entire mountain ranges. The flames on the Kogelberg resembled a dragon spouting erratic bursts of fire on its serpentine journey down towards the road. People lost their homes in that fire. Throughout the country, volunteers make up a large component of our firefighting services. They are truly a special breed, and as the cliché goes, while everyone is fleeing a fire, they plunge into its depths. During the winter months, when the cold eats into one’s bones, poor people in the informal housing sector make fires
inside their homes, causing opportunistic flames to leapfrog from house to house. Getting the fire engines to traverse a maze of oddly constructed pathways with nonexistent signage is always difficult, but arriving there is always a certainty. The essential services are just what their name implies – essential. Our mountain rescue is another pointer indicating how people risk their lives by climbing hazardous terrain to reach stranded or injured hikers. No questions are asked in how careless you were in exploring the mountains either ill-equipped or by taking a dangerous route – their only concern is that you are safe. The same attitude prevails on those stormy seas when anglers, fisherpeople or recreational boat people find themselves in peril. There is no hesitation when a sea retrieval is necessary. The ambulance service always ventures without a second thought into areas where personal safety is a priority. In the bad old days, if you were living in a subeconomic area an ambulance would take hours to arrive at a destination. Middle-class suburbs could expect an ambulance within minutes. The same situation applied to the police. In many cases, the police would arrive
days later or not at all. Our police are overworked and underpaid, and yet we expect them to enter our homes when we fear entering ourselves. Police are universally blamed for a myriad ills, ranging from excessive brutality to corruption, and at the same time we routinely feel that they should be in the firing line when the proverbial hits the fan. Above all they put their lives on the line whenever they don that uniform. They are also the first line of defence that citizens have. Combined with our security providers, the police do create a safer environment, and are normally our first port of call when trouble threatens. In the Overstrand, the same people usually volunteer for the essential services. In all aspects, these services need our support on so many levels. We need to create a caring dynamic whereby everyone helps each other. Pay it forward and build a stronger community spirit.
Nat Geo baboons: Pringle Bay to blame
Soek ’n goeie ‘ou’ jas
What seems to escape all those who now condemn Nat Geo for making their ill-considered doccie on the Pringle Bay baboons is this: Pringle Bay is a small community where the common grapevine works as well as anywhere else, especially in the many pubs, the only hotel – the Hangklip Hotel – and the many small shops. Surely most everyone there knew at the time that Nat Geo was doing this “experiment” with the baboons. The Nat Geo team also spent two days at the only small English-medium school, ostensibly to learn how the children are taught to deal with the baboon menace on a daily basis. The councillor of the ward, and the various important persons now breathing hellfire about the issue, must surely all have known about it at the time – if not, why not? – as after all it played out over three months in this small community where they all live or work. It seems very obvious that they all considered this venture a grand opportunity for free tourism advertising for their town. Tourism being the buzz word for every dead hole in the country at the moment, and who was going to argue over such a wonderful opportunity to get it all for free – worldwide! And now that the backlash of humantrained baboons is hitting home, now they are horrified at the scope of the “free tourism advertising” they craved so. Even the Hang-
Groetnis
klip Hotel is now enjoying its share of this free advertising – reprehensible as its part was for monetary gain in the whole saga at the time. All these aggrieved persons and citizens of Pringle Bay must surely take the full blame for having allowed this despicable experiment to be perpetrated in their small town. If they were not so blinded by their desire to have their town put on the tourism map through the help of their hated baboons, then they could have stopped the whole thing before it started. Having had baboons inside our kitchen seven times already, and once a troop of 23 on our back stoep, we know all about them, and don’t encourage them to loiter in our gardens and homes. The many mirrors I have hung on trees in the garden have now kept them away for over two years. The old adage – don’t mess with nature – seems to have come home to haunt the otherwise nature-conscious folks of Pringle Bay.

Riding the steenbras steamer ONE of the most widely distributed fish along our coast is the white steenbras, aptly nicknamed “steamer” on account of the initial run the large fish makes once it’s been hooked. They always give the angler a good fight. These fish have large rubbery lips that are easily snagged when they suck in the bait. Hooks from 1.0 to 3.0 are excellent to use for steamers. When using worm or prawn an extra number-1 hook sliding loose on the trace always gives better bait presentation. The small extra or skelm hook is placed in position with three loose twists around the shank holding the head of the worm that has been slid there, keeping the worm looking natural. The old-fashioned trick of pushing a sliver of white styrofoam inside the worm, alongside the hook, provides slight flotation – and the bait then does not crimp onto the hook and form an unsightly blob. This time of the season, between stormy days (north to northwest weather), large shoals of white steenbras move all along the coast from Langebaan right down to Knysna. The shoals appear to be of a similar size and weight that move together. It is ironic that some of the really hardy anglers who reported fish during the last week were from Macassar Beach, Bikini Beach, Gordon’s Bay and Kogel Bay. Even
at the Gourits River mouth a few good-size steenbras were caught last Friday, and the odd leerie was taken on prawn. Hermanus Plaat is also one of the prime spots where the big steamers can be found. One of the top steenbras and galjoen anglers is Tertius Marais, who always fishes at the ‘Rondeklippe’ at Kogel Bay. He and Nathan Joubert both had a 12 kg steenbras each, and returned slightly smaller fish to the water. Very recently there was a good run of smaller white steenbras near Melkbosstrand on the West Coast. One often wonders why shore anglers travel all around the country looking for good catches of steenbras – if they only knew that Macassar beach near the Eerste River mouth, and even the stretch of beach between the Lourens River mouth up to Melk Bay, Harmony Park (Mosselbank) and Steenbrasgat
(not to mention Bikini Beach and the old harbour wall in Gordon’s Bay) have delivered steamers of up to 20 kg in the past. The white steenbras at Gordon’s Bay prefer prawn, and only sometimes take a mixed grill bait of prawn and bloodworm. Those in both Kogel Bay and Hermanus Plaat up to Pearly Beach prefer bloodworm and rotten red bait. With this topsy-turvy weather, the recent ski-boat competition was cancelled, and dates are still in disarray this coming weekend. The weather will be very inclement, and not fit for fishing. During a chat with Steve Champion, SA’s premier spinner-maker and top yellowtail angler, Steve mentioned that he was still carrying on with spinner-making as a hobby. His son, who passed away, was his righthand man. Steve has appealed to all of his old customers to contact him well before the yellowtail season starts so that he can complete their orders in time for the coming season. Any boatman or rock and surf angler wanting Steve to recast old spinners or make new models can call him on 021 703 1602 any time. The last snoek reported was seen last Thursday at Kleinmond. Call Art for all your reel repairs on 0 021 854 3831. Send your news and stories to him at 2 bjridgway@telkomsa.net.

Amateur golf wizards to hit the green swinging Aspiring amateur golfers will have the opportunity to put a touch of spring into their swing on 1 September as they put their skills to the test at Arabella Golf Club and compete for the chance of a lifetime to play like a pro in the internationally acclaimed World Golfers Championship. “Following last year’s success, we have received an overwhelming response by golfers in the Western Cape to participate in this year’s tournament,” says Craig Clay-Smith, spokesperson for World Golf Events South Africa, the SA event owners and organisers. “Due to this popular demand, Arabella Golf Club has been added as a second regional elimination round.
This is exciting news for the Western Cape as it gives the province an even greater opportunity to be represented in Team South Africa at the world finals.” Founded by the late Sven Tumba and supported by the patronage of world-class golfers Arnold Palmer and the late Severiano Ballesteros, the World Golfers Championship has over the past 17 years forged friendships and business networks between all ends of the world by bringing golfers together in their passion for the sport. The tournament is open to all amateur golfers over the age of 16 and with an official handicap. The winners in each handicap flighting
(0–5, 6–10, 11–15, 16–20, 21–25) will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the finals to compete for a place in one of the two fiveperson teams to compete internationally for the coveted amateur world golfing title as a team and individually. Mike Munro, golf sales executive for Arabella, says: “We are thrilled to be participating in the 18th Amateur World Golfers Championship as a regional elimination venue, and believe our course will provide a true championship golfing experience.” To enter and book your spot on the teebox, pay a visit to www.wgesa.com.
