Young man drowns at sea

A young man was lost in rough seas last week amid an encounter with enforcers tasked with watching over the ocean's natural resources. Nineteen-year-old Steven Joe “Sai” Figaji from Hawston is presumed to have drowned on Thursday near Breakfast Bay in Onrus after two fishery patrol officers of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) caught three men diving without licences at 11:00. DAFF spokesperson Lionel Adendorf says the three divers abandoned the bags they had been carrying the moment they saw the officers. One swam to shore, while the other two

swam into deeper waters around 80 m from the shore. It was there that Figaji ran into trouble. His friend attempted to help him, but was forced to swim to safety when the rough seas threatened to overwhelm him too. “Our officers then took the unconscious Figaji out of the water and loaded him onto the NSRI sea rescue craft,” Adendorf says. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but they were too late to save him, and he was declared dead at the scene. The officers then found that none of the men had diving permits. The two surviving divers were taken into custody. “Our officers did not go back into the water to recover the bags,” Adendorf says. Figaji’s parents, Genine and Timothy, are devastated by their only son’s death, and say

they will investigate the matter themselves once his autopsy report is in. Figaji was a promising rugby player who took part in the FNB Classic Clash for Hawston Secondary School in 2010 and 2011. He was part of the school’s u.19 first team. “Sai was a very good son and a popular friend to all,” his parents say. “He was good in sport and was an excellent swimmer. “You could basically say he grew up in the ocean. “Our hearts are broken.” Besides his mother and father, Figaji leaves behind his sister, Timnecia. ) A funeral will be held for Figaji on Saturday at 09:00 at the family home in Cambridge Street, after which a service will be held in the Anglican Church in Hawston at 10:00.

Bags of Love need to be filled KERRY VAN RENSBURG The Bags of Love campaign is again under way – now for the seventh consecutive year. Although the official launch of the initiative was rather low-key, the project is now in full swing and individuals, businesses and organisations are encouraged to collect and fill as many bags as possible with the basics on the grocery list – and a few treats as well if possible – for those in need. Overstrand mayor Nicolette BothaGuthrie, the patron of Bags of Love, said this project, which reaches out to the poorest of the poor at Christmas, is very close to her heart. As a champion of the initiative, she told those present that while she was at the hairdresser she “sold” 10 bags to the salon. Bags of Love started in 2006 with 100 bags; last year the project distributed 2 500 bags of groceries to needy families. The organisers hope to match and improve on this target for 2012. Eastcliff Spar has committed itself to the Bags of Love project once again. Store manager Christi Jooste said it was thanks to a discount from Spar Western Cape that the outlet is able to offer the bags and the products used to fill the bags at R105. Elsewhere the items on the grocery list would cost around R120.

Bags of Love has been set up at Eastcliff Spar to make filling easier. Botha-Guthrie said instead of buying her many family members Christmas presents this year, she would donate a Bag of Love on behalf of each of them. SUPPORTING THE PLIGHT OF THE AFRICAN PENGUIN: Although African Penguin Awareness Day was on Saturday 13 October, officials from CapeNature Overberg dressed in black and white on Friday and went around to various schools in the area to create awareness of the declining African penguin population among our children. According to Edith Henn (community conservation manager: CapeNature, Overberg) many of the schools used the opportunity to give their pupils assignments to do on the African Penguin, while others made penguin posters, drew pictures and even wrote poems. Man oornag vasgekeer JANINE VAN DER RIET Genade van Bo is al wat die 26-jarige Byron Lombard van Caledon se lewe gered het toe die insleepvoertuig waarmee hy iemand anders moes gaan red, self in ’n vol rivier beland het. Lombard het vir meer as vier ure op die bakkie se dak gesit en bid vir ’n wonderwerk. Lombard, wat as insleepoperateur vir Hermanus Towing/1st Call werk, het Sondag in die vroeë oggendure omstreeks 12:30 uitgegaan ná hy ’n oproep ontvang het van ’n vrou wat met haar twee kinders op ’n plaas buite Napier in ’n rivier beland het. Die rivier, ’n sytak van die Karsrivier, is gewoonlik ’n onskadelike stroompie, maar met die aanhoudende reënbuie wat die naweek die Overberg plek-plek laat oorstroom het, het dit vinnig in ’n kragtige rivier

ontaard. Terwyl Lombard nog op pad was na die toneel, het boere in die omgewing die vrou en haar kinders uit die voertuig gered. Die voertuig kon egter nog nie uitgehaal word nie. Reinard Geldenhuys, hoof van Overberg- distriksmunisipaliteit se brand en redding op Bredasdorp, was ook op pad, maar ná die boere reeds die mense gered het, het hy en sy spanne die ondersoek afgelas. Lombard was nog op soek na die plek waar die vrou vasgeval het, onwetend dat sy reeds geholpe is, toe sy bakkie deur die kragtige rivier meegesleur is. Hy het besef hy is in die moeilikheid en het ’n plan bedink om bo-op die bakkie se dak te klim en vir hulp te wag. Sy selfoon het ook met die rivierwater verdwyn. Van ongeveer 01:00 het hy bo-op die dak gesit en wag, en hoop op ’n wonderwerk.

Geldenhuys het die Sondagoggend 05:00 opgestaan en besluit om weer te gaan kyk waar die vrou se voertuig is, min wetend van Lombard se noue ontkoming. Geldenhuys het vertel hoe hy op die plaas aangekom en per ongeluk ’n verkeerde afdraai geneem het. Dié fout het verseker dat hy, asof gestuur, afgekom het op Lombard, wat steeds bo-op die bakkie gesit het. Geldenhuys het sy spanne uitgeroep en die redding-swemmers het Lombard van die bakkie afgehaal en na veiligheid gebring. “Lombard het erg aan hipotermie gely en was uitgeput ná vier ure in die koue,” het Geldenhuys gesê. Lombard se werkgewer, Wickus Horne, sê Lombard is vir die week by die huis. Sy oë is nog erg geswel, moontlik weens die vuil water. “Hy herstel nog van longontsteking, maar ons is dankbaar hy is gered en hoop hy herstel spoedig.”

Fellowship festivity draws throngs to weekend market PIETA PIETERSE This past weekend was a highlight on the Kleinmond Fellowship Church calendar. A delightful miniature craft market was held on Saturday morning; Kleinmonders turned up in large numbers to buy fresh produce, boerewors rolls, home bakes and puddings, among others, and many welcomed a relaxing break in the tea garden. A flower festival in the church rounded off the Saturday. On Sunday morning, a thanksgiving and harvest service took place. The church was packed to capacity, and the kind support of countless individuals will once again enable the fellowship ladies to help many people in need with festive food parcels. The organisers would like to thank one and all for their loyal support.

The baked treats kept people coming back for more.

Terwyl ma en pa hul Kersinkopies by die markie doen, is daar hope pret en vermaak vir die kleingoed in ’n veilige omheinde gebied. Daar word ook ’n spesiale doekruilstasie en ‘n moederskamer met TV-skerms opgerig sodat nie een oomblik van die aksie op die verhoog gemis word nie. Radio Tygerberg sal ook ’n regstreekse uitsending van die plaas af doen en besoekers is welkom om die aksie by hul buite-uitsaaisentrum te gaan bekyk. Veilige en gemaklike parkering is beskikbaar by Tegnopark langs die R44 en pendelbussies sal deurlopend tussen die parkeergebied en die plaas ry. We should embrace change – not deny it

Nie oordeel Nog ’n aspirante visserman, met ’n voorliefde vir die see, het die week sy lewe verloor in die plek wat hy die beste ken: Die see. Die departement van landbou, bosbou en visserye vermoed die drie mans wat in die moeilikheid beland het, was vermeende perlemoensmokkelaars, maar vir sy ouers was hy ’n staatmaker seun, met ’n voorliefde vir die see, hengel, duik en ’n uitblinker op die rugbyveld. Party mense voel as hy ’n stroper was, dan is dit sy verdiende loon. Maar wie is ons om te oordeel? Dit was iemand se kind, iemand se broer. Dit bly ’n groot verlies en ’n tragedie. ’n Familie is stukkend. ’n Seun van 19 wat nog nie eens heeltemal begin lewe het nie, is dood. Ouers is nie veronderstel om hul kinders te begrawe nie. Ons dink aan die familie in die moeilike tyd.

Betty’s Bay resident Sylvia Vollenhoven celebrated two milestones this week – her birthday and the launch of her film, Project Spear, a definitive visual depiction of state corruption during the apartheid era and its implications for the present government. Not to be confused with The Spear, the artistic exhibition of the president’s nether regions by Brett Murray, Project Spear is an attempt at unravelling the mystery of what happened to the unaccounted billions that went missing from state coffers. It is also scheduled to be broadcast by the SABC. Wellknown theatre personality Basil Appollis is the artistic director on the film, and uses music and dance to emphasise important segments in the structure of the narrative. Appollis currently has a play running called Kaapse Stories, produced by Richard Loring in Cape Town. Vollenhoven has had an illustrious career as a journalist since the ’70s, featuring stories under the most trying conditions during those dark days. The film is a necessary tribute to those who are committed to revealing the truth. It is a must-see dynamic, and we should invite Vollenhoven to screen it in the

Overstrand. Why should film launches only take place in the urban areas? We have an untapped resource of a large potential viewership, and our residents should be exposed to the creative impulses of our local filmmakers. Our present tourism manager will be relocating to the Kalahari bushveld soon, and hopefully we’ll get a dedicated and visionary replacement, someone who can bring muchneeded exhibitions, film and book launches, music festivals, even visits to the townships – and of course added income to the region. The Overstrand region has received an influx of amazing talent in the business, cultural and political arenas. Many people have recently relocated from an urban environment to our seaside towns seeking a quieter existence and yet bringing so much energy and ideas to the Overstrand. We should be harnessing them in all endeavours, including bringing them into our political, artistic and economic lives. I think we are scared of change, so prefer maintaining the status quo. When you have the same people determining the local authority, the same people sitting on the

Die kyker is betrokke by die hele skeppingsproses - gesprekke tussen die kunstenaars, die keuse van ’n lied, die aanleg van die tracks, die repetisies, die jam, die gevegte, die suksesse en die besteding van hul beloningsgeld - weliswaar ’n eksklusiewe vratte-en-al insig. Tribal Echo het eenparig besluit het om die Hangklip-Kleinmond streek as hul basis te gebruik vir die verfilming van die projek tussen 2 en 4 November. Dit sluit in ’n ‘Mal oor jou Suid-Afrika’ Tribal Echo vertoning Saterdag 3 November by die gewilde PeriScope Teater en Restaurant in Pringlebaai. Daar word gehoop dat ‘Die Tribe’ se teenparty in die Jam Sandwich episode – identiteit nog geheim – aan die vertoning sal deelneem met ’n vroeë weer-

gawe van die nuwe komposisie op die aand se playlist. Die vertoning word verfilm deur Jam Sandwich en sal deel uitmaak van die nuwe 2013 reeks wat op SABC2 verskyn. Die deelname aan Jam Sandwich is net die nuutste van Tribal Echo se 2012 suksesse, wat televisie optredes op SABC3 Expresso, KykNet Fiesta as gas aanbieders, en KykNet De Kat insluit. We smirk when we read of international politicians wanting to be in power for many moons, and yet we do the same in our little cultural body. In most cases, history shows that people on the ground eventually effect those changes themselves. We should embrace change, not deny its capacity for empowering us.

‘I’m sorry if you have not noticed’ Responding to KM Adams’ column on service insanity: Sir, strangely enough, your description in the last paragraph – of “someone who was always available to the community, dealing with everything from broken street lights to road closures, and even making his telephone number available to the constituency” – sounds strangely familiar. And you could even add “speeding on Clarence Drive, encroaching sand dunes, roads, building regulations”… The list goes on. I want to assure you that my pledge has been and still is to serve my community and, more specifically, my ward (comprising at least seven identifiable communities). Side by side with 12 other ward councillors in the Overstrand, I do this to the best of my ability. I am sorry if you have not noticed. Ons menseras is vreemder as wat ons dink. Kyk maar waaraan ons ons geld bestee. Navorsing toon dat wapens en oorlogvoering ons grootste nywerheid is, met musiek in die tweede plek. Sonder om die saak te oppervlakkig te beoordeel, dui dit op ’n ontstellende tweespalt in ons wesens. Moderne breindiagnostiek bied fassinerende insigte in hoe ons koppe werk. Deesdae kan jou kopvel met elektrodes versier word wat presies aandui watter deel van jou brein betrokke is by watter bedrywigheid. Om van kleins af musieklesse te neem het byvoorbeeld ’n merkbare fisiese uitwerking op jou harsings, nie net op die abstrakte deel daarvan nie, maar ook die fisiese. As ’n mens ’n instrument leer bespeel, toon dele van jou kop wat jou vingers, mond, arms en asemhaling reël, meetbare groei, net so die sentrums wat simboliese denke, logika en selfs taal beheer. Van taal gepraat – ons verwys graag na

“primitiewe” mense sonder geskrewe tale se gebrekkige uitdrukkingsvermoë, maar die feite vertel iets ander. Van die oudste mensegroepe, die Eskimo’s, Khoikoin en San, se tale is van die ingewikkeldstes op aarde. Verder is die geheue van praters van hierdie tale talle ordes skerper as dié van die meer ontwikkeldes, want alle kennis, veral wat oorlewing betref, moet onthou word. Hulle begrip van en insig in hul natuurlike omgewing is niks minder as verstommend nie. En omdat hul tale soveel feitekennis moet oordra, is die semantiese digtheid daarvan sonder gelyke: elke sinsnede kan meer, en meer presiese inligting oordra as ’n bladsyvol van die res van ons s’n. ’n Vriend vertel my van ’n oompie, ’n stokou vrygesel wat in die twintigerjare ná die eerste reëns dikwels die diep Kalahari binnegetrek het vir jag en biltong maak. Sy ModelT-Fordjie was uitstekend geskik vir die doel, want dit was (in teenstelling met vandag

se 4x4 slagbodems) lig, hoog en eenvoudig om aan die loop te hou. Oubaas wys hom die gat in Fordjie se pens en die olierige “lewensbloed” wat daar uitgeloop het. Ta besin vir ’n oomblik, vat sy pyl en boog en verkas – Oubaas neem aan dis maar die laaste sien van hom. Maar nee, ’n dag later is ta weer terug, volstruis oor die skouer. Bentleys breeze into town

Play a part in Big Blues Music Festival

CILENE BEKKER The real estate value of the park on the corner of 11th Street and 6th Avenue in Voëlklip increased by volumes when 25 Bentley owners parked their vintage models on the green grass last Thursday. The stopover in Hermanus was part of the scheduled seventh International Vintage Bentley Tour of South Africa covering some 4 500 km. The owners hail from America, Switzerland and Germany, with the majority – 22 Bentley owners – from the UK. Six of the Bentleys have South African owners; among them were Robert and Maryke Middelmann of Honingklip Dryflowers in Bot River, who drive a 1930 Speed 6 model. “When I met my husband,” says Maryke, “he was already playing with vintage cars. It was a school hobby. And I still come second!” she smiles. The oldest model in the tour group was a 1922 three-litre, owned by Stuart and Cindy Maxwell of Grabouw. Tour organiser John White says Hermanus is always included in his itinerary, and has proved to be one of the highlights of the event over the years. The group gathered for a quick cuppa and a sweet bite with their Voëlklip hosts, and timed it well to coincide with whales performing in the bay like paid actors. After the teatime stop, the Bentley owners opened throttle to Onrus for their luncheon at Milkwood restaurant. These cars may be vintage, but they can do over 100 mph. Miles, yes. These wonderful machines, designed by the Englishman WO Bentley, are race cars. Woolf Barnato, son of Kimberley’s Barney Barnato, was chairperson of Bentley Motors in the 1920s, and drove Bentleys three times to victory at the 24-hour Le Mans race.

John and Jill May from Oxfordshire, England, have owned their 1930 Speed 6 model for 32 years. Besides the SA tour, other recent trips included drives to Germany, Turkey, Perth to Sydney, New Zealand and a race at Laguna Seca. This was the fourth International Vintage Bentley Tour of South Africa for Cedric and Mandy Cook, who live in Cornwall, England. He said their 1928 4,5 L model has been a “member of the family for 30 years”. She handles beautifully, he added, pointing to the words on the bonnet: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”

Do you know of a place called Sonesta? After the 1950s, when the nationalist government introduced separate development to the country, so-called “people of colour” were barred from beaches, from living in “white” areas, and from entering hotels or cafés in these areas. It was argued that different races should be allowed to develop separately. In 1978 or thereabouts, the Coloured Development Corporation obtained land on the Bot River lagoon and built the Sonesta Holiday Resort with luxury facilities to be used exclusively by non-whites. The complex comprised a large conference centre with dance hall and restaurant, as well as rondavels and a campsite. Tom Bromley, civil engineer in charge of the development for LTA Construction, has been able to fill me in on some of the details of the project. He is now retired and lives in Cape Town. In addition, Frans Esterhuizen of Fisherhaven knows some of the history of Sonesta. Cape Nature Conservation eventually took Sonesta over. In 1992, it sold the resort to the Steinmanns, who renamed it “Meer-en-See” (literally, “Lake and Sea”). Meer-en-See is situated 13 km before Hermanus on the R43 from Cape Town, on the eastern side of the estuary. This scenic paradise is tucked away right at the bottom end of the Bot River estuary, where it meets the sea. Surrounded by nature reserves, its “front garden” is the Bot River lagoon, which stretches for 12 km, up to the lovely white beaches with rolling waves as far as the eye can see.

The greatest variety of bird life in South Africa is found at Meer-en-See. At least 118 species have already been noted there, and almost 90% of the waders, immigrants from Greenland and the northern parts of the old Soviet Union, as well as flamingos and southern right whales, are annual visitors to Meer-en-See. One of the nature reserves adjacent to Meeren-See is also the home of South Africa’s only herd of wild horses, which with a bit of luck might be spotted during a hike into the reserve with its stretches of beach, undulating grasscovered dunes, wetlands and lake on the Kleinmond side of the lagoon. Accommodation offered at Meer-en-See consisted of equipped rondavels and chalets, and a caravan park. The Steinmanns tried to maintain the privacy policy of the previous owners, but to generate funds they opened it to all races.

Unfortunately, they were inundated with busloads of people over weekends who showed no respect for the privacy of the complex or other visitors or residents in the camp, so they had to close the resort to the masses of day visitors and find other ways of generating income. In 1993, they introduced conferences, wedding receptions and even Sunday meals. They marketed the rondavels and chalets, and the resort was generally successful. Even games of indoor cricket were started, and proved most popular with Hermanus residents. Slowly, the rondavels were sold to private owners. At present all of them, as well as the chalets, are privately owned. The caravan park was upgraded and let on long-term. The land of the park was later subdivided and sold to the 115 caravan owners, who became shareholders to a share block company called Meerenbosch. The conference centre eventually became a white elephant and was demolished, and the land developed as Sandown Bay. There are at present four groups of homeowners – Meer-en-See with the rondavels and chalets, as well as Meerenbosch, Sandown Bay, and Middelvlei. The Steinmann brothers, Theophil and Frank, still own some of the undeveloped land, but now live in Voëlklip and Franskraal respectively. Frank Steinmann, who gave me much of the information on the matter, lived at Meer-enSee for 12 years before moving to Franskraal.

Want to get involved in the next Big Blues Music Festival? The premier blues festival takes place at Kleinmond Harbour on 1 and 2 March next year, and everybody is invited to participate in a series of open meetings on the matter. The meetings happen at 17:00 on the first Wednesday of every month (7 November, 5 December, 2 January and 6 February) at the Hangklip–Kleinmond Tourism Bureau. “This is where we discuss ideas and plan our area’s biggest musical event together,” the organisers say. They’re also calling on volunteers to work during the festival. Volunteers will be expected to work at least one eight hour-shift, and in return will receive a weekend ticket valued at R250 to enjoy the music when they are not on duty. Volunteers will also undergo training and receive a certificate prior to the festival, which needs the services of around 50 people on both Friday and Saturday, and 20 volunteers on the setup and breakdown days – Thursday 28 February and Sunday 3 March. “You are also invited to apply to host the Kleinmond Kitchen at the festival, if you have some catering experience, are a hard worker and have a passion for traditional Kleinmond fare.” If you’d like to run a stall for your own profit, as long as it will attract festivalgoers and fit in with the festival vision, then collect an application form from the tourism bureau. Preference will be given to community projects and organisations. Not just horsing about The children, teachers, moms, oupas and oumas of Pringle House had a spellbinding encounter with three wild horses during an outing to Rooisand. They also saw flamingos, pelicans and a terrapin on their recent sojourn. Hennie Smit used the opportunity to share some valuable information about terrapins with the group. The outing ended with a welldeserved picnic. “The Pringle House team would like to thank all the drivers, whose help is much appreciated,” a spokesperson says. Next up, the team is planning to hold a white elephant day on 10 November. “Any donations are welcome, especially as this is a perfect time for spring-cleaning after a long and cold winter,” the spokesperson says. Barrel race a great success ANNETTE THERON Several wineries, as well as the Bot River hotel and Shuntin’ Shed entered teams to compete in the fifth annual Bot River Barrel Race. This year saw the venue change from the Bot River station to the Bot River square with food stalls and live music. The winning team that walked away with a new wine barrel to the value of R7 500 was Paardenkloof Estate, with Anysbos in second place, Gabriëlskloof third and Shuntin’ Shed fourth.

The outing was a huge success.
