After being launched as a stand-alone newspaper just over a year ago, the Kleinmond Gazette will be absorbed into the Hermanus Times and will no longer be published as a stand-alone newspaper. The last edition of the Kleinmond Gazette in its current form will be published on Tuesday 13 November. Boland Media, publishers of both the Hermanus Times and Kleinmond Gazette, took the decision to absorb the area covered by the Kleinmond Gazette into the Hermanus Times as this presents a better fit for the patterns of movement of residents in the Overstrand. Residents from Rooiels through Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay and onto Kleinmond will now be served with news on their area in the Hermanus Times. Businesses will also be able to advertise to a broader market in the Hermanus Times. “The decision to merge the Kleinmond Gazette into the Hermanus Times was very carefully thought through and was informed primarily by the reality that the Overstrand area is a cohesive whole that spans the distance from Rooiels through to Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai. Residents within the broader Overstrand area have an interest in news throughout this area, due to their shared patterns of movement, and we want to be able to give them a single package of news and information on this broader area,” says Barrie de Beer, general manager of Boland Media. “Residents are encouraged to continue engaging with us on issues in their towns, so that we can continue serving them with news that matters to them, while businesses will now have the chance to also reach the broader Overstrand market through advertising in the Hermanus Times.” De Beer thanks the readers and advertisers of the Kleinmond Gazette for their support during the past year. “We do hope you will continue the relationship with us through the Hermanus Times,” he adds. “We would like this relationship to grow in the future.” ) Any queries can be directed to Ester Schultz (advertising), Janine van der Riet (editorial) or Annelien Dean (editorial publisher), on 028 312 3717.

Mayor’s husband passes away after illness LIANDA BEYERS-CRONJE One of the gentle giants of Hermanus, part of a family who made an indelible mark on the town and its history, Mark Guthrie, passed away peacefully yesterday morning after a long illness. The husband of the executive mayor of the Overstrand, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, Mark, had been a gentle rock in her life during their ten year marriage. He also gave her one of the most precious gifts of her life, his children, who adore her as a mother and grandmother. Mark’s ties with Hermanus stretched back to his grandfather Francis Guthrie, who founded the law firm Guthrie and Theron in Caledon and who was responsible for most of the early developments in Hermanus, east of the Bayview Hotel through The Mossel Bay Land and Develop-

Mark Guthrie with Nicolette Botha-Guthrie. ment Co. Among the monuments left by Mark to Hermanus is the Mariner’s Village development and the Hermanus Public Protection Service (HPP), in which formation he played an instrumental role together with Basil Clarke-Brown.

Mark had been in many respects a maverick, non-conformist and a pioneer during his illustrious career. His friends will remember him for his wisdom and his gentleness and – above all – his deep and steadfast love for his family, his adored wife and his God.

Getrude Moses with friends of the community. In 2002 is hy in sy huidige pos as Overstrand se hoof: brandweerdienste

Geyser project to be implemented The Overstrand Municipality and Eskom’s geyser control project currently being implemented in Kleinmond, Hawston, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai to help manage electricity demand during evening peak time, is gaining momentum. The municipality wishes to thank residents who have already agreed to support the project. Altogether 2 800 of a total of 6 400 units were installed by the end of November 2012. The Overstrand Municipality requests residents to join forces with Eskom and the municipality by supporting the programme aimed at connecting appliance control devices (also called switches or relays) to their gey-

sers. The device switches off the power supply to geysers during times of peak demand, that is between 18:00 and 20:00. The Overstrand Municipality and Eskom appointed Powertech IST, an Energy Services Company (ESCo), to implement the programme in Kleinmond, Hawston, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai. According to Gerard van der Merwe, manager: utilities, municipalities and commercial business unit at Powertech IST, qualified installers will visit homes in these areas to install relays during November. The appliance control device is installed next to the distribution board

in the house. Provision is made for the installation of such a device in the municipality’s bylaws. A qualified contractor with an Overstrand Municipality, Eskom and Powertech IST identity card will do the installation. It is free of charge and takes approximately 20 minutes. The power of the house will be switched off before installation and switched on again after the installation is completed. The contractor does not work on the geyser itself and the installation has no effect on electrical equipment and appliances. More information can be obtained from the call centre on 083 228 0268.

Honoured for outstanding service At the Cuppa for Cansa, which that was held on Sunday 21 October, Getrude Moses, also known as Peggy, was honoured by the community for receiving the Mariëtte Loots Friends for Life Award. This award is given on a national level to a volunteer who renders exceptional, outstanding services to cancer patients and the community. Getrude Moses is a retired nurse and has been a volunteer since 1999 in Bot River. Getrude is trained in patient care, health programmes and fund-raising and is actively involved in all three these areas. The volunteer visits an average of 9 patients per month on a weekly basis and in the case of a terminally ill patient, twice a day. She also facilitates a support group for survivors and their care-givers on a quarterly basis and involves them with the Relay for Life. At the same time Getrude strives towards community involvement and therefore recruits volunteers and introduces the services of Cansa at

churches and community organisations. She identifies leaders to establish a well functioning liaison committee, of which she’s the chair. With each health vampaign, Getrude speaks to schools and other organisations; distributes pamphlets and assists with screenings at the local clinics. She really uses every opportunity to educate the community. In front of her house is a bus stop where school kids are dropped. She once held a talk about smoking on the bus, because she saw so many children smoking while waiting for their peers. She even directs customers in the supermarket to rather buy products with the Cansa seal of approval on them. Getrude and the members of the liaison committee organize the Cuppa for Cansa and take part in the yearly fun walk, Toktokkie campaign and CansaRelay For Life. What a privilege to have such an exceptional volunteer in our local community – she is a real role model to all of us.

Buckle up, it’s that time of the year again

Vat hande Die afgelope naweek was Hawston ’n slagveld.

Summer is around the corner and the usual influx of visitors to the Overstrand brings tremendous benefits to the region. We are not only a terrific holiday destination but also a respite from the bustle of urban living. We have been experiencing a very cold and wet winter accompanied by howling winds, with gallons of water seeping into peoples’ homes. Normally during the rainfall season, our businesses suffer. Local residents prefer staying indoors, much like the rest of the Western Cape population. Rather than braving the adverse weather, we only leave the comfort of our homes when birth or death beckons. It is that time of the year when we prepare our moving chariots for those camping trips, visiting friends and family in other provinces and those quintessentially road trips to our favourite vacation getaways. The family car needs its major service with workshops and garages conducting a booming trade during these final months of the year. A friend warned me about servicing the car and having a mechanical checkup specifically during this time as the workshops, when requested to do a service, would find a myriad faults when reporting to the owner. He stated that it is the intention of

the workers to secure a decent annual bonus and sometimes well maintained parts would mysteriously develop a fault. As we are concerned about the safety of ourselves and passengers, we hardly ever quibble over the new and sudden quotes. How much of this tale is steeped in truth and how much was meant to alarm me isn’t the issue. The point of departure for me is the fact that consumers can end up with a hefty bill for a simple service of a vehicle. The motor vehicle is a precision instrument and it will go in the direction you steer it but needs our respect. Statistics have proven that drinking and driving leads to accidents and much worse and yet many of us continue to imbibe far too much and then get behind the wheel feeling that we own the world Children without seatbelts is another concern and sometimes our parental love requires that they sit on our lap in the front passenger seat. No matter how fast you travel, I will get to the same destination in one piece by travelling at the set speed limit while you will incur fines, harsh words from fellow drivers and even worse, a terrible tragedy. It is even more painful to witness children in a speeding car driven by a driver

with no regard for other road users. Rather be late than dead. I recently saw a man transporting equipment in an open bakkie with his worker sitting in the back in the pouring rain while the driver had the full and solo comfort of the cab. Something was wrong with that picture and brought back decades old images of the tot system and virtual serfdom. The car is an essential part of modern family life and will ensure the creation of beautiful memories driving past stunning vistas and bringing us safely to places where we will produce further moments of holiday happiness.

It is the pain that is dental, my friend . . .

A friend of German origin who was born over there near the end of WW II thinks his wonky teeth may be due to the lack of essential nutrients and minerals in his early post-war diet. His innate frugality, I guess, is also the result of his wartime upbringing. Like all imaginative people, he hates going to the dentist. He tells me about his instinctive aversion and I concur by quoting him a little bit of (now-forgotten) Ogden Nash: Some pains are physical Some pains mental But worst of all Is the pain that is dental. He recently told me that he was planning to visit his dentist “just for a quote”. I applauded his mature decision and wished him success. Knowing the state of his teeth though, my heart went out to him. Saw him again recently. “So did you go for

your quote?” He nodded “Yes”. “Let me guess,” I said, “price of a small car?” “No,” he mumbled, “big car…” And there is the dentists’ dilemma – they operate in the same environment as the medics, but they critically lack the power of life and death of the latter. Sadly people just don’t die of their teeth (not directly, at any rate). So while the doctors are cheerfully hiking their charges, the dentists are, er, stuck in a hole; their art is just more at the mercy of market forces. For many people economics is a matter of painful choices about spending scarce resources, and I imagine people faced with the need for a better car or extensive dentistry but not both, will opt for the first, private transport being what it is over here. A lot of what we do as humans and how we do it, derives from our expectations and if these are not met, we become miserable. I believe of

all the professions, dentists have the highest incidence of suicide, probably the result of unmet expectations and the ghastly daily grind of peering down the gullet of a wide-awake patient who glares back at you. Of course human expectations are relative, not absolute. This insight helps explain the behaviour of the super-rich, for instance. It seems incomprehensible to us bottom feeders that people who have every conceivable amenity and commodity could ever feel anything but wildly euphoric. But no, apparently just the thought of one of your peers having a car/house/wife/bank account more remarkable than your own is so ghastly that it will goad you onto new pinnacles of avarice or dump you into troughs of despair. So dear reader, the next time a vast new 4x4 or flashy German sedan passes you, look at the invariably glum face of the driver and let your

heart go out to him/her in pity. And pity the poor Porsche owners too, who always seem to be driving around alone. Doing the sort of things that made you able to afford the beast probably also made you the kind of person noone wants to drive with. fouriejh@mweb.co.za

Junior stadsraadslede vir 2013 ingehuldig CILENE BEKKER Die junior stadsraadslede vir 2013 is Maandag 29 Oktober tydens ’n plegtige geleentheid by die munisipale ouditorium ingehuldig.

Soapie puts Bot River on the map The 1980’s television series Nommer Asseblief (number please), put Bot River on the map and was enjoyed by viewers countrywide. After that the little village was never the same. Every Thursday evening all the viewers sat nailed to the evening soapie and made sure that they just don’t miss this lively programme. They believed it was a live broadcast from Bot River. The characters became part of the households and their tales and quips had viewers in stitches. The village and its post office suddenly became a popular tourist attraction. The residents of Bot River believed that it was in their own village where this popular film production was made. When everybody wondered why Bot River was chosen for

the film, the script writer, Obie Pretorius, said that she grew up in Bot Rivier and that the characters in the series were living there in her youth. Lissie en Thysie and uncle Fasie with their lively conversations were true to that time. She could still hear them reasoning on a number of matters. One could not really recognise the inside of the post office but visitor from the Transvaal would specially turned off at the Bot River sign and walk into the post office and asked to see Tant Lissie at the counter. The butchery also changed since becoming known countrywide. The Bot River Butchery sign has disappeared and was replaced with Koorsen’s Bo-

erewors in big red letters. The owner immediately started selling his special boerewors in packaging with a friendly uncle to show the importance of the sausage seen on television.

Air quality highlighted The Overberg District Municipality will implement a new air quality management plan from the start of 2013. The plan aims to ensure municipal areas achieve the prescribed air quality standards. The document is currently in draft form, and the public has the opportunity to comment until 21 November. The plan was presented at the Overberg Integrated Conservation Group (OICG) meeting held in Bredasdorp on 24 October. The Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative is a member of the OICG. Air quality refers to noise and odour, addressing sources of air pollution. The draft plan highlights specific sources of pollution in the Overberg, such as industrial operations in Gansbaai and Hermanus, agricultural activities such as crop burning, vehicle emissions and biomass burning, including veld fires.

Air quality monitoring undertaken in 2006 in the Overberg found that pollution levels were low, and well within the thresholds required by national government. Sulphur dioxide levels were, however, higher in Gansbaai and Bot River, while nitrogen dioxide values were higher in Zwelihle, Hermanus. Through the air quality management plan, the Overberg District Municipality is hoping to address the lack of skills in the field of air quality management at municipal level. It also aims to facilitate proper communication between municipalities, provincial government, business and industry, as well as other interested and affected parties. Any comments regarding the air quality management plan can be sent to Neville Dreyer at ndreyer@odm.org.za or phone 028 313 1243 before 21 November.

Southeaster blows in the yellowtail It is important for all anglers to take careful note of the weather and moon phases before and during all fishing activities. Many anglers believe that the neap tide periods, which occur a few days between new and full moon, are the best times to fish. Full moon and neap tides are also good times to clean up reefs and gullies, and to collect bait. Certain parts of the beaches during these low tides expose many worm holes and prawn holes, and mussels can also be pumped off the beaches more easily. Good practice during the very low tides is to venture out onto the reefs and gullies to fish in the deeper water. As the tide rises one can slowly move closer to the shore and fish almost to high tide, and then carry on fishing on the exposed beach itself. There is very little danger when slowly fishing the beach, for as the water rises one is gently persuaded back by the incoming tide. The only time one must really take care is during the very strong southeaster, which can cause prob-

lems when wading back through the deep gullies. The present southeaster has brought some nice-coloured kob water our way, and has driven a number of yellowtail shoals into the bay on the Fish Hoek side. The main Kranz spinnermen were very active last week; a number of top anglers, such as Barry Rose, had one or two yellowtail and the odd snoek. A number of boatmen who ventured to Cape Point were also rewarded with a few yellowtail in the 4 to 7 kg class. Kayak fishermen who braved the wind in Milk Bay and inside “Die Poort” boated a number of medium geelbek, smallish kob and a few white stumpnose. Shore anglers bagged some Morocco-size geelbek and an odd kob from Shark Rock, “Verleëbank”

and Blake’s Island using very fresh chokka. It never ceases to surprise me as to how many anglers store their reels with the drag fully tightened and full of sand and sea water for long periods before commencing fishing once again. After fishing, rinse the reel in fresh water with drag on, then release the drag completely and spray with Q20 before storing. After using a prawn pump, wash it thoroughly with fresh water before slacking off the pressure to relieve the rubber washers or ball. Never use oil on the shaft or washers. . For all your reel repairs and services, phone Art on 021 854 3831. Send your fishing news and photos to bjridgway@telkomsa.net.

dorp gevang is.
