Wellness Week held at Hospital The Department of Health Stellenbosch sub-district hosted a Staff Wellness Week. All staff from Stellenbosch Hospital and Primary Health Care Clinics took part in the activities from 18 to 22 March. The idea for the week was initiated by the local occupational therapist after noticing that some of the staff were suffering from a general lack of morale. Staff were allowed to attend on different days of the week, keeping the clinics and hospital functional. The same programme was repeated each day. After a talk from Old Mutual, the main sponsor of the event, and a relaxation exercise from the sub-district psychologist, the fun began. Staff were treated to an “Amazing Race”, competing in mentally and physically challenging tasks around the hos-
pital grounds and competing for the big prize – a voucher valued at R400, for the winning team. One of the tasks, an eating contest, consisted of finishing jelly, pilchards and mayonnaise. ME Cosmetics then treated the ladies to a presentation on make-up and some mini make-overs. Goody bags were handed out to all those who attended and a healthy lunch was also provided. Staff members showed great team spirit and there was much fun, laughter (and some cheating!). Staff left feeling energised, more positive towards the workplace, relaxed and most of all, having had lots of fun. The team would like to thank Stellenbosch Hospital Board, Rotary Club of Stellenbosch, Old Mutual and Simonsrust SuperSpar for their generosity in making the event a success.

Maties no longer play in Safa’s second league After a decision by the Stellenbosch University to rather spend money by investing in Maties Football, the Maties first soccer team had to withdraw from the Safa Second League.
GMAC CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION: Team Eikestadnuus-Give Me a Chance’s Martha Koekemoer and Delarey Brugman got a chance to spend some time with their fans at the penultimate stage of the Absa Cape Epic in Stellenbosch. For more information on GMAC visit www.givemeachance.co.za.
“At the end of last year, Stellenbosch University made the decision to invest in Maties Football,” said Professor Leopoldt van Huyssteen, executive director: Operations and Finance at SU and board member of InnovUS. “At that stage we were contractually committed, which would have made it difficult to invest to our maximum capacity in the team. “To enable us to do so, the SU needed full ownership of the franchise. “Maties Football cancelled the contract to play in the Safa Second League amicably and will revisit this decision at the end of this season.” The Maties team now plays in the SAB league. This was based on the decision to create a pipeline of young players to play for the club. This also coincides with the University’s focus on youth soccer development. The SU is set to become a driving force on the South African soccer scene with the launch of a development initiative spearheaded by InnovUS, the university’s innovation agency. The initiative will boost soccer at two levels, namely by investing in the development of soccer skills at grassroots level within the communities surrounding Stellenbosch, and by creating an elite soccer environment at the university, which will attract topnotch players to its ranks. The recent introduction of the Varsity Cup for soccer has highlighted the importance of develop-
ing football at university level. The aim of the SU Soccer Programme is to groom the Maties First soccer team into a professional team, which can compete with the top teams. “This will be achieved by means of world-class administration, team restructuring, improved talent identification and recruitment, investment in coach education and full-time scientific support and testing.” One of the initiatives the Tottenham Hotspurs International Player Development Programme takes place from 2 – 6 April at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. The programme will give players the opportunity to gain invaluable experience on the pitch, and will also serve to educate local coaches in this regard. In addition, during May this year a community soccer pitch in Jamestown will benefit from the installation of four solar-powered floodlights, thereby extending the use of the facility into the evening hours. This lighting project has been made possible by a partnership between Philips and the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) and the aim is to get a further four to six Philips KNVB Light Centres sponsored within the wider Stellenbosch community.
