Albei is
in hegtenis geneem.”

COMPANY GIVES BACK: A donation of dog food to the value of R3 000 was donated to the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) this week. AWSS has extended a challenge to local companies to support it under the Corporate 500 Challenge, through which each company is asked to donate R500 (whether in food or cash) to help the society. Such donations greatly relieve the pressure the society is struggling under. VAPS Consultancy, a Cape Town company dealing in motoring compliancy, donated a treasure trove of dog food this week. It’s naval day for Casual Day this year!

Get on board with Casual Day
SOUTH Africa’s biggest fundraising project for persons with disabilities, Casual Day, raised R20 315 451 through the 2011 project. About 400 organisations rendering services in the field of disability, via the structures of six major, national beneficiaries, benefit from this money. Casual Day is a successful initiative of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA). The annual Casual Day event has become a staple on the calendars of corporate South Africa, providing an easy and fun-filled way to make a positive contribution. The opportunity for office camaraderie is welcomed as each year on the first Friday of September, people are encouraged to wear something different to what they usually do, wearing the sticker as an endorsement of the serious
sentiment behind the lighthearted change in dress code. Annelise de Jager, Casual Day national project organiser, is upbeat about the achievement of the 2011 campaign and encourages each and every South African to participate in the 18th Casual Day event on Friday, 7 September. “Our accomplishments over the last 17 years were made possible by the on-going participation of the public and the huge effort the participating NGOs make fund-raising and promoting the cause of persons with disabilities. We are continually gratified by the participation of South Africans in this project. Casual Day raises more than just money – it raises awareness and helps us get closer to the fully integrated society we hope to achieve.” Each year the disbursement of the proceeds is done after the audit in February and directors of the six national ben-
eficiary organisations received their share of the funds on 2 March. The 2012 theme, however, is “Get on Board”, which is inspired by a naval and boating theme. Whilst the public is encouraged to dress like a captain, sailor or pirate, the implication is that wearing the sticker is the endorsement to show that you did in fact, get on board with Casual Day. The dedicated team at the national Casual Day office work year round putting the event together making it easy and convenient to participate. Get your sticker from any participating welfare organisation, Absa branch, Game, DionWired, Edgars, CNA, Jet, Boardmans or order directly from www.casualday.co.za. In Stellenbosch, stickers are sold at Huis Horison (021 887 5080), Stellenbosch Work Centre for Adults with Disabilities (021 887 8688) and Dorothea School (021 889 5463). .

IT is Arbour Week, and a number of organisations are ready to get their hands dirty and plant trees.
A group of volunteers from GreenPop planted more than 50 indigenous trees in the garden at the new outdoor eco classroom that is under construction at Ikhaya Primary in Kayamandi. “The Stellenbosch community is under threat of losing one of its last publicly owned renosterveld outcrops – the historic hill of Papegaaiberg,” says Dr Leanne Seeliger of the Vuya Endaweni Community Conservation Partnership. “Surrounded by the industrial area of Plankenbrug, the informal settlement of Enkanini (part of Kayamandi), Middelvlei Farm, Oude Libertas and the Onder-Papegaaiberg residential suburb, this threatened ecosystem runs the risk of being lost to future generations. “In an attempt to prevent this and create awareness among Kayamandi residents, teachers and learners – as well as the broader community of Stellenbosch – of the importance of this threatened ecosystem, the Vuya Endaweni Community Conservation Partnership has started the creation of this outdoor eco classroom and indigenous garden with some funding from Distell.” A number of groups will work together on the initiative, including Ikhaya Primary, Vuya Endaweni, the environmental education programme at Stellenbosch University, the municipality’s urban greening department and “hopefully, the larger Stellenbosch community”. The aim is to “create a world-class platform for Kaya-

GreenPop works continually to plant trees and create awareness around the importance of trees on earth at community centres, schools and churches all over South Africa. Many of the trees the group has planted have found a home in Kayamandi. Recently, GreenPop was also involved in the launch of the 10 000 Tree Landscape by Beezy Bailey at Siyazakha Primary School, hand in hand with Beezy Bailey, DJ Fresh and 5FM. GreenPop members have also just returned from a major treeplanting project in Zambia, where they planted 4 135 trees with the help of local communities and volunteers from all over the world. “For the Vuya Endaweni Outdoor Eco Classroom we will be

Some students from Ecomaties and Unasa Stellenbosch may also be involved in the day, as well as some of GreenPop’s regular volunteers.” You can read more about GreenPop on its Facebook page – look for “GreenpopTreevolution”. Get ready for Santa Shoebox OVER 4 000 children from 46 facilities in Stellenbosch and the Winelands have been registered with the Santa Shoebox Project this year. The Santa Shoebox Project is a non-profit organisation that has been working to collect gifts at Christmas time for thousands of underprivileged children since 2006. Parents are encouraged to in-
volve their children. Donors personally choose and fill gift boxes and then decorate and label each one with the recipient’s name. Uniquely, the donor knows the name, age, gender and care institution of the child the gift was bought for. The Santa Shoebox project not on-
ly manages the network and distributes the gifts, but also provides content guidelines for each individual gift box. Donors can start registering online by visiting the website at www.santashoebox.co.za. The drop-off in Stellenbosch will take place from 23 to 25 October at the NG Kerk Welgelegen.

AWSS needs pet food THE Stellenbosch Animal Welfare Society (AWSS) relies entirely on donations of food to feed its animals. The society currently has over 100 dogs in its care, but food is limited; more donations are desperately needed. In the greater Stellenbosch area, the AWSS can collect any donations that can’t be
dropped off at its offices. Deposits can also be made into the AWSS bank account, using “FOOD” as the reference. The banking details are: Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch; Nedbank Stellenbosch; 149 804 2856. Call 0 021 886 4901, mail 2 animalws@telkomsa.net or visit www.aws-stb.co.za.

Swansea beklee ’n verrassende tweede plek. Die klub is verlede seisoen be-
Back care – the risks and the tips SEPTEMBER does not only mark the start of spring – it is also the start of national Back Week, an annual event hosted by the South African Society of Physiotherapy to promote back health and educate people on how to stay injury-free. This year national Back Week runs for two weeks, from 3 to 16 September. According to Margaret van den Heever, physiotherapist at the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute (Suspi), statistics show that 75% to 85% of all people over 30 will experience back problems at some point in their lives. “If you ask anyone if they know someone who suffers from back pain, the answer will most likely be yes, as back pain is the second most common reason people visit a physician.” Van den Heever says a number of common risk factors can lead to back pain. These include: ) being unfit – back pain is usually more common in people with low levels of physical fitness; ) being overweight – too much weight, especially around your waist, can put stress on the back and cause pain and injury; ) your job – not only jobs where you have to lift carry or push heavy objects can lead to back pain: the same is true of office jobs where you have to remain seated behind a desk for long periods;
) your genes – certain hereditary illnesses such ankylosing spondylitis (inflammation of the joints in your spine) can lead to back pain; ) getting older – the discs and joints in your back experience wear and tear that in due course might lead to back pain. This usually becomes more evident in your late thirties or forties ) smoking – puffing away deprives the discs in your back from absorbing the nutrients they need to maintain optimum health, and smokers tend to be slow healers, so they usually suffer with their back pain for longer; To stave off back pain, Van den Heever recommends: ( maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight if you need to – having a balanced diet will help with this, as well as provide the necessary calcium and vitamin D you need to keep your bones strong; ( exercising regularly to help keep your body and back muscles strong. ( remembering to sit or stand with the correct posture – avoid slumping or standing with hunched shoulders, and when you have to lift something, bend with your legs and keep your back straight. The Suspi physiotherapy unit supports national Back Week, and is offering free back assessments to individuals who might either be suffering from back pain or who want advice and guidance on how to prevent injuring their backs in the future. For further information, send an email to 2 sportmed@suspi.ac.za or call 0 021 808 3393/5.
