More singletracks at Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge With less than one month to go until the 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge, the majority of available entries for the event – especially the longer 55 km route – have already been snapped up. Less than 2 000 entries are still available for the four routes at this year’s MTB Challenge, which kicks off the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour Lifecycle Week on 28 February. Entries for the 2015 event opened in September last year, coinciding with the announcement of the newlynamed Cape Town Cycle Tour and MTB Challenge. Following rave reviews from riders who tackled the race in its new location in 2014, the MTB Challenge will return to Le Bonheur Wine Estate in the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy in Stellenbosch this year. Well-known trail builder and mountain biking enthusiast, Meurant Botha of Dirtopia, has crafted the four routes specifically for this event. Botha shares some insight into what

riders can expect, saying: “After moving the race to its new home at Le Bonheur Wine Estate last year, the feedback from riders has been overwhelmingly positive. Developing trails in this area is part of our legacy project, so we didn’t want to simply rehash 2014’s routes. Instead, we’ve introduced new scenic and shady areas for riders. We’ve also incorporated a lot more single-track sections – the most in the history of this event – and hope that this contributes to our aim of continuously improving the overall experience for our participants.” The two shorter routes (14 km and 22 km) take place on Saturday 28 February. Aspiring MTB-ers looking to enjoy a scenic ride through the beautiful Stellenbosch winelands are encouraged to secure their entries as soon as possible, with 600 entries still available for the 14 km route, and 800 for the 22 km route. The MTB Challenge’s longer and more intense routes (38 km and 55 km) take place on Sunday 1 March with

kloof Syrah Auction Reserve 2012.

Be open about money In light of the month of February, synonymously linked to the month where acknowledgement of those we love leads to greater focus on relationships, another important aspect to review and focus on is money matters. “Couples who are dating generally have not had sit-down conversations about managing finances together,” says Eunice Sibiya, Head of FNB consumer education, “but the reality is that informal management of your money in a relationship can take a chunk out of your pocket.” Financial matters are incredibly personal and have to be handled with sensitivity as it is so easy for one party to feel inadequate because they don’t have an equal amount of money to spend or feel as though they might come across as stingy if they don’t want to go out or ask for their share of money back after they have paid for something. Sibiya highlights the following situations that, if aware of, can be managed in the right way so that awkward money moments are avoided. Keeping up with your couple friends A few couples spending time together wining and dining is always fun, however make sure that you and your partner are honest with one another about the amount of times and the types of activities you are able to fit into your monthly budget. “While you don’t have to disclose all your budget details to one another, it is worthwhile to fill your partner in at the beginning of the month about what your financial outlook for the next 30 days is. That way, both parties can act proactively when invited to events rather than one party accepting the invitation just for the other to advise that they are not able to accommodate

the event in their budget,” suggests Sibiya. Don’t split the bill equally Although it is much easier to split the bill equally to avoid the tedious process of dividing it correctly, the convenience might not be worth what it does to your budget, unless of course you had more or less the same meals and drinks. Whilst you will pay less if your meal was more expensive than your partner’s, it is very likely that you could be the one paying more than what you would have if you paid only your share. “It is wonderful to be at the stage in a relationship where both parties are comfortable with just dividing the bill in half, but if you are deliberately choosing your meals according to what you can afford, having to pay more because the bill is split equally could mean having less to spend on a another item in your budget for the rest of the month,” notes Sibiya. Don’t make a fuss about this, just tell your partner that you order based on your budget and that splitting the bill throws your budget off. If this is a ground rule you never need to have the conversation again. “You can grab the next one” How often do we tell our partner: “Don’t worry, you can grab the next one” Or “This one is on me”? Although these are caring or often convenience gestures to avoid having to swipe two cards, you might be surprised to what these random costs of paying for your partner add up to especially if your partner tends to be forgetful and you do not alternate between such payments. “Don’t be shy to raise this – there is nothing wrong with reminding your partner that you paid the previous bill – it can be done in a loving and caring way and could be the difference be-

tween surviving the month or having to start living off credit,” says Sibiya. Informal living arrangements Many couples don’t stay together permanently but sleeping over ever so often is not out of the norm. Whilst it is true that one can cut on costs and wastage when living together permanently, quite the opposite is true of informal living arrangements. There is a certain level of commitment and financial conversations that come with the decision to move in together, but when you just visit, particularly if you sleep over more often at one partner’s place, one party can very easily incur more costs than what they would ordinarily have to. Household expenses such as electricity and water and grocery costs are bound to increase with your partner staying over frequently, but due to the informal sleepovers they are unlikely to contribute to these bills, resulting in your monthly expenses towards this increasing. “Draw up a budget to show your partner how your living costs increase and ask them whether they are willing to contribute towards electricity as an example, the cleaning service or buying food for supper in the periods that they stay over,” suggests Sibiya. Managing the above circumstances well can have a positive effect on both couples who are dating as well as those in long term relationships. “Be realistic about where you are in your relationship and about what you and your partner can afford, not only for your current circumstances, but also if you are saving towards certain milestones like a wedding or children. Honest conversations on any matter, especially finances, are invaluable and can avoid bitterness, irritability and money fights later on,” concludes Sibiya.

Beware of the ever present business debt trap When we talk about a debt trap, the first thing that comes to mind is consumer debt. Although it can ruin your finances due to the interest payable, remember that You the Entrepreneur views debt from the business owner’s perspective. Therefore, when I talk of a debt trap, I talk about the amount of credit you grant to clients, the amount that is owed to you for products or services already rendered. The big problem is that your books indicate that you have earned an income, but you have no cash flow. Many businesses suffer because of cash constraints. Your business may have many assets and healthy sales, but without enough cash flowing into your business, you cannot pay your accounts. Many businesses go into liquidation because they cannot pay their creditors. Small business owners are often tempted to grant credit just to get the business, but they cannot really afford it. The best way for a small or micro enterprise to operate is on a cash-only

basis. We can learn from the big retailers who work on a cash only business. When the consumer buys from them, he / she may pay with a credit card, but the business receives its money immediately. Credit brings a lot of extra administration. You must now keep track of who owes what to your business plus send them an account or statement at the end of each month. This makes for a lot more admin and requires extra staff just to earn the same money. On top of that, you’ll need an attorney to collect the money if people do not pay their accounts. If you really deem it necessary to sell on credit, limit the amount of credit you’ll grant by the measure of whether you can afford to lose that amount if the client(s) cannot pay. If you cannot afford to lose it, do not grant the credit. You may say I am hard on business owners, but rather safe than sorry. Your future income is dependent on a surviving business. are also required to belong to a registered running club and have a valid running licence, and are reminded to check and update their club details before 4 March. No temporary licences will be issued to ultra marathon runners. The good news for runners who missed out on securing an ultra marathon is that substitution entries have now officially opened, giving athletes who can no longer participate the opportunity to “hand over” their entry to another runner. Haile Gebrselassie Further exciting news for the race organisers is that Olympic great, Haile Gebrselassie, will visit the Mother City in April. “We are absolutely thrilled to have Haile Gebrselassie support the world’s most beautiful marathon,” says Stefanie Schultzen, Two Oceans Marathon marketing manager. “It has always been our dream to have him at our race, and we are over the moon that our technical sponsor adidas will be bringing him out to South Africa.” Schultzen adds that the 41-year-old international icon will be supporting the events forming part of the Two Oceans Marathon, which will include a visit to the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon Expo. He will not be running. R1 million bonus In addition to the prize money that can be won by the ultra marathon winners, title sponsor Old Mutual once again offers a R1 million bonus to the winning male and female runner who respectively breaks the record for the 56 km ultra marathon in 2015. The men’s record of 3:03:44 was set in 1988 by road running legend Thompson Magawana, while Frith van der Merwe set the women’s record a year later in 1989 when she ran 3:30:36. The closest any runner has come since then is Zimbabwean Marko Mambo, who ran 3:05:39 in 2005, and who has won the race three times. Russian Olesya Nurgalieva ran the second fastest women’s time in 2008 when she crossed the finish line in 3:34:53.

Varsity Cup 2015 kicks off with major clash between Maties and arch-rivals Ikeys The FNB Varsity Cup, presented by Steinhoff International, is almost back and ready to rock with a new innovations and even more excitement set to form part of this year’s competition.

The 2015 season kicked off yesterday with a match between Maties and Ikeys in Cape Town. At the time of going to press the result of this match was not available yet. This match will, however, set the scene for the local Maties team and can be an indication of what can be expected from the maroon jerseys in this year’s competition. On of the exciting innovations is the return of the White Card. The white card, which allows coaches and captains to refer decisions for review to television match

officials (TMOs) during games, was first introduced during the inaugural Varsity Cup competition in 2008. The system is back this year and is endorsed by the South African Rugby Union (SARU). This is just another way Varsity Cup ensures it remains at the forefront of sporting innovation and assist SARU in testing ideas. This season will also see the addition of the defensive scrumhalf. The defensive scrumhalf is a simple change in rules where the scrumhalf defending the scrum will not be allowed to pass the mouth of the scrum once the ball has been inserted. In other words, the defending scrumhalf will not be allowed to follow the ball. Varsity Cup hopes that this rule will encourage a running rugby style of play and diminish the breakdowns

at the scrum. Founder of the competition, former Springboks captain Francois Pienaar, believes that this year will be even bigger and better than last year. “This year is a very exciting year for Varsity Cup Rugby. The return of the white card presents us with a unique opportunity to trial something that we could one day see used in international rugby. Sport cannot afford to stagnate in this day and age and it is important that it evolves with the players in mind. The white card is there to ensure the correct decision is always made,” said Pienaar. The 2014 edition saw UCT Ikeys crowned champions after an emphatic comeback. Ikeys scored three tries in five minutes to beat North-

West University (Pukke) 39-33 after being 33-15 behind and Duitser Bosman, CEO of Varsity Sports, hopes that this year’s competition will be equally exciting. “We saw some brilliant rugby played last year and believe that this year will be no different. The excitement around the tournament has really come of age in the last few years. The crowds have been brilliant, but most importantly, we have seen the Varsity Cup be a springboard for players to launch their career,” Bosman explained. The competition is also a springboard for players to further their careers. Last year’s Currie Cup final saw 29 of the 44 players come from a pool of ex-Varsity Cup players, evidence that the platform is breeding some of the best talent in the coun-

try. As usual, there will be hotly contested derby matches between Ikeys vs Maties as well as Shimlas vs CUT, UJ vs Tuks & last year’s final repeat Ikeys vs Pukke in Potchefstroom. There will be two televised fixtures on SuperSport 201 each week to make sure that the rugby keeps on rocking. The competition would not have been able to grow were it not for the continued support from the sponsors, something Bosman feels is testament to the quality of the competition. “With First National Bank (FNB), Steinhoff International, Spur and Cell C continuing their commitment to sponsorship, it underscores what a great product we have,” Bosman concluded.
