Spoiled for a day A group of 11 children, some from vulnerable circumstances and others suffering from life-threatening illnesses were treated to a special horse-riding expedition outside Stellenbosch. The day was made possible by the Reach for a Dream Foundation and Thistledown Stud Farm. The children got to know the horses, petting them and braiding their tails before been taken out for a short ride on a horse or carriage. PHOTOS: ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

A safe Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and many romantics may have already started planning how they will spoil their loved ones. It is also a time when criminals could prey on unsuspecting victims who are caught up in the mood of the day. Rob Dale, Managing Director of ADT Security Western Cape said that there are some basic safety precautions that can be followed to avoid falling prey to crime. “If you are going to be out and about, possibly shopping for a gift or arranging a special date, it is important that you do not let your guard down. Be aware of your surroundings and of the people around you. “Ladies should keep their handbags closed at all times and carry them tucked tightly under your arm, not dangling at the straps. “Guys should not keep their wallet, cellphone or other valuables in a back pants pocket, but rather in a front. Dale also had this advice to ensure that your Valentine’s Day is not spoiled by criminals: If you are going out: ) Let a family member, friend or neighbour
know and tell them approximately what time you expect to return home. ) If you think you may arrive home after dark, turn on an outside light before you leave or make sure someone is there to meet you at the door. ) Always carry some kind of identification, your cell phone and some small change in the event of an emergency. ) Memorise and programme to your mobile phone important numbers; including those of your parents, your partner or a close friend and the emergency services. Returning home after an evening out: ) About two kilometres from your home, turn down the volume of the car radio so that you are more aware of your surroundings. ) Keep an eye out for suspicious individuals or vehicles as you approach your driveway. ) If you do notice anything out of the ordinary, drive away. Go to a neighbour, the local police station or contact your security provider to have an officer meet you and accompany you to your home. ) Once you are indoors contact the person you had told you were going out to let them know you have returned home safely.

Wi-fi now available in Cloetesville, Kayamandi and Ida’s Valley Cloetesville, Kayamandi and Ida’s Valley are now beneficiaries of the Stellenbosch wi-fi project. The very purpose of the project was to empower the most disadvantaged communities in accessing the Internet, which would enable job seekers and school children to apply for jobs and to conduct research for their studies. The role of the Internet and the knowledge economy in transforming people’s lives motivated the executive mayor, Alderman Con-
rad Sidego, to launch the wi-fi project in February 2012. The pilot project involved providing free wi-fi in the town centre. The project partners include Mxit and Stellenbosch University (SU). According to the municipality the project, which was delayed by a few months due to confusion around clear roles and responsibility of all the key players involved, is now back on track. The three new free wi-fi hot spots are at the Kayamandi High School, Cloetesville Library and the Ida’s Valley ward office on the sport grounds. The signal
strength of the hot spots should stretch about 100 m around the equipment, but will depend on the signal strength of the user devices. The name of the free wi-fi network is called “FreeInternet”. Users can connect without a username or password. Once connected, the user can browse the Internet. Users will, however, not be able to download movies and music. At present the network can only accommodate a maximum of 30 users at the same time. The project will be rolled out to all Stellenbosch municipal areas by the end of 2014.

Sedert verlede jaar is die WOW projek ingeskakel by die US se HOOP-projek. An initiative to help matric pupils achieve their goals has resulted in the fourth annual Mr and Miss Matric SuperModel Educational Empowerment project. Enigma von Hamburg, a 69 beauty pageant title winner, former Miss Gay Western Cape Queen and well-known public figure is the driving force behind the pageant. “I came to realise that in order for communities to succeed, we as members of the community have to take the lead by empowering ourselves,” says Enigma. “The aim of the pageant is to give talented pupils the opportunity for further education.” The pageant is open for any full time grade 12 learners across South Africa and the prizes include: R10 000 cash prize, designer outfits, luxury chauffeur transfers to matric ball or any other glamorous event, professional photo shoots, hair and make up vouchers and much more. To enter the pageant, SMS or e-mail (only) your name, surname, school name, cell number and e-mail address to 076 0744 799 or supermodel@webmail.co.za. Entries close 28 February, and the grand finale will be taking place on 24 Au-
gust. Tickets to the extravaganza are available from 1 February and cost R50 or R80 per person for table seating. For table seating guests they may bring own snacks and non alcoholic beverages. “We are definitely going bigger, better and brighter as we planned an exciting event for both the contestants, parents, sponsors and the audience. We believe that everyone who participates is a winner. “The experience of competing before an audience will be of significant benefit as it teaches the contestant to be confident and assertive, qualities most needed to succeed in life and this is when beauty meets identity. We pride ourselves in our honesty the fair way which we treat our contestants and finalists.” Join the facebook group: “Mr & Miss Matric SuperModel” and like the “Enigma Von Hamburg FanPage” to stand a chance of winning great prizes including tickets to the glamorous event. Winners will be announced closer to the event. If you would like to support this initiative or have any queries regarding the event, e-mail Netessa at matric-supermodel@webmail.co.za.

Does love make you fat? There is not much thought given to the effect that love has on our bodies – we just love to love! A 2008 study from UNC Chapel Hill lends fact to “Marriage makes you fat”.
Love can totally make you fat. Scientists at the University of California, San Diego found that married women put on weight after they get married as compared to their men. The theory maintains that a woman takes less interest in her appearance once married – or even if she is involved in a longterm relationship. Women tend to indulge in fatty foods and sweets a bit more than usual, thus bringing on the weight gain. Reduced stress levels also contribute to weight gain. This is what we do – in love or loving someone: ) Food becomes a core focus. As a couple, staying in and cozying up (with food) on the couch happens more often than it did when you were single. ) Your partner’s bad habits become yours. So here are some ideas on how to take on “love handles” and win: ) Surround yourself with positive thoughts and energy.
) Choose carrot sticks or apple slices instead of the chips, chocolates and heavily-laden calorie food. ) Make the TV room a no-eating zone. Snuggling up next to each other on the sofa to watch your favourite shows frequently goes hand-in-hand with nibbling on high-calorie snacks can be a dangerous habit. The calories really start to rack up as a result. Instead, relax and enjoy each other’s company, without involving food. ) Massages will burn a few extra calories (about 70 calories for every 15 minutes) by working those muscles in your upper body and hands. ) Nurture your relationship, not your appetite. Spend some quality time together playing a board game or doing a jigsaw puzzle. Keeping your brains and bodies active, replace the chips with air-popped popcorn or fruit slices. ) Spice things up in the kitchen. Cooking dinner together can create memories to last a lifetime. ) Get fit together. Get fit as a couple. Decide to read a book between you and discuss over a summer evening’s stroll. Play volleyball in the pool or just a game of cricket will do wonders in your exercise regime.
‘Real’ mail for your Valentine The SA Post Office is encouraging romantic South Africans to use the postal service for Valentine’s Day. “A card or letter for Valentine’s Day is the best possible gift for a loved one some distance away,” said Janras Kotsi, head of Mail Business at the SA Post Office. “A letter or card sent by a loved one must be one of the best surprises anyone can get.” Did you know that a letter bearing a stamp has a 50% bigger chance of being opened first (or at all) than one without a stamp? Why? Because it is perceived that a person actually took time and effort to sit down and write it! Kotsi said a card or letter is easy to keep and will not be deleted or lost when a phone is upgraded or a hard disk crashes. “It will outlast flowers, it takes up very little storage space and when you re-
read it years later, it will evoke more memories than any other keepsake.” He added that mail is more romantic than social media because you can neither spray the latter with aftershave or perfume nor kiss it with lipstick. Kotsi also pointed out that a letter makes a particularly affordable gift for Valentine’s day: “A standard letter costs only R2,65 in postage, but it remains appropriate for Valentine’s day which focuses on emotion and feeling, not financial value. Customers should make sure that they use the right address and postcode, which can be looked up on line at www.postoffice.co.za . “Remember we can create personal memories, strengthen existing relations and even create new relationships by sending someone a personalised card or message for Valentine,” he added.

Do you have the lunchbox blues? January is over and resolutions are fading but as the school year settles in, are you making sure your children eat right at home as well as on the playground? Tired of trying to come up with creative lunchbox ideas for the kids? Try dairy! Not only are there tons of dairy products available that you can quickly and easily include in school lunches, but according to the consumer education project of Milk SA, dairy is a critical part of a healthy child’s diet. Maretha Vermaak, the CEP dietitian, says daily dairy intake could reduce the current nutrient gaps in the diets of most South Africans, including those of our children, and protect against chronic diseases in future. There are so many conveniently packaged options to choose from – low- fat flavoured milks; low-fat drinking yoghurts; yoghurts; cheese wedges, soft cheeses with dipping crackers, cheese sticks –, so brighten your kids lunchbox everyday with dairy.

Die spanbestuurder, me. Chrystal Samuel, beskou hulle prestasie as ’n besonderse een waarop Paul Roos Gimnasium baie trots is. – Shaun Vorster
