Wat ons by daardie euwel in baie se lewens uitbring: nuwejaarsvoornemens.
Ongelukkig is dit so dat as dinge stresvol begin raak, verval mense maklik terug in hul ou, ongesonde gewoontes.
Get in financial shape for 2015 After a long and hectic year, many working South Africans had some time off with loved ones. Many of us also have some financial breathing room during this time, thanks to year-end savings payouts, bonuses or 13th cheques. It’s also when we plan to start the New Year with resolutions to get into better physical and financial shape. The reality is that these plans to get fit often come to nothing. Every January finds many of us regretting our spending sprees and festive binges. John Manyike, head of financial education at Old Mutual, says: “Too often, South Africans who’ve worked hard throughout the year end up being pressured to overspend. Many succumb to aggressive marketing and clever advertising to buy stuff they don’t need to impress other people. “Buying stuff we don’t need becomes a real problem when it means we can’t afford the stuff we do need come January for expenses like school fees, uniforms and textbooks.” There are some direct correlations between physical fitness and building personal wealth. Neither can be achieved instantly and both hold long-term benefits for you and your family if you’re willing to stick to basic principles. “It’s never too late or too early to start getting into shape and to get advice on financial planning.” Good personal financial management and financial advice is more important than ever, points out Manyike. “The most recent Old Mutual Savings and Investment Monitor found that more than 80% of working, metropolitan South Africans want help on how to save. “The pressure to ‘splash out’ can put breadwinners and especially parents in an unenviable position. Some breadwinners spend their bonuses excitedly before they’ve even been paid and end up in more financial trouble than if they hadn’t been paid a bonus at all. “Many – too many – feel it’s easy to spend on credit and deal with the consequences in January or February,” says Manyike. This can be hard on relationships too, he adds, especially when one partner is more careful with money than the other. “The cautious one can end up feeling like a killjoy who’s always saying no.”
John Manyike, head of financial education at Old Mutual. It’s not only marketers who are putting pressure on people to spend. Youngsters who expect the kind of gifts their friends get, or expect expensive holidays, put pressure on parents who don’t want to disappoint their children or make them feel neglected. This can trap families in a spiral of high interest and debt, and can even lead to blacklisting, garnishee orders and repossessions. One way to try to avoid this is to enlist your family’s help: “Kids can be subject to peer pressure and pass that on to their parents, who end up feeling they’re depriving their families by not splurging. It can be a difficult conversation and it can initially lead to tears and tantrums. But it’s worth working through this. Instead of being badgered into buying new cellphones, for example, keep using the same ones and save up for a seaside holiday or something the whole family can enjoy. But more importantly, says Manyike, turn budgeting and being debtfree into a family project. “This may require a complete turn-around in your attitude towards money, from ‘spend-first-andsave-the-rest’ to ‘save-first-andspend-the-rest’.” He suggests the following steps, adapted from Old Mutual’s On the Money financial education programme.
Where am I? V Make a list of what you spend. Nowadays, money can seem unreal, just a swipe here and there and a number on a screen. Many of us know that we’re overspending, but hide from the ugly truth. V Write down your fixed expenses: rent or bond repayments, insurance premiums, school fees, union membership fees. V Now list your variable expenses: food, transport, rates, cellphone, clothing and entertainment. Don’t sabotage your efforts by underestimating costs. V List your irregular expenses: car maintenance, home repairs and so on. Try to work out an average monthly cost. Again, if in doubt, it’s better to overestimate slightly than get caught short. V Add them up. If they total more than your earnings, you need to act. But even so, pat yourself on the back: now that you know exactly where you are financially, you’ve already put yourself in a stronger position. Back in the black V List your expenses in order of importance. You need accommodation, transport and food. Apart from that, ask yourself whether an expense is crucial, or whether it can be cut out. Typically the items that can be eliminated will be things such as entertainment and clothing. VUse the money you’ve saved to reduce your debt, especially credit card and store card debt, which carries high interest. You’ve got the power VOnce you’re debt free, establish a basic emergency fund for unexpected expenses. A month’s salary is a good start. While it may take a while to build up, it’ll give you a real sense of security once you have it. ming bevoordeel.
Be ready to make changes DAVID MALHERBE There is something special to a new year, something like, “I get another chance to start anew.” Yet to make the new year a better year than the previous one, we cannot do everything the same as before and then expect a better outcome. Therefore, if last year was not what you hoped for, then don’t only hope for a better year to come, start to plan what you will do differently. If you carry on the same way as before, expect the same outcome. We need to change our ways in order to improve and grow our businesses. So what will you do differently during this year? Have you taken stock of last year so that you can know where to improve or eliminate? No matter what kind of business you’re in or what your situation may be, I want to encourage you to not only look at the circumstances but to also reflect on your personal life. In Proverbs 4:23 we read: “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.”
The way to a better tomorrow and new year, starts with the way we think. If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you can, you will. Have you ever done some strategic planning for your life or business? My experience is that most people live from day to day with the motto of what goes around, comes around. They have no plan of what they would like to achieve with their lives or businesses. To be successful, you need to plan and then work for it. You cannot just drift through life and vainly hope that somehow success will catch up with you. An old proverb teaches us that “rolling stones gather no moss.” Unless you plan it, you are unlikely to succeed. Let us learn from the past year and stretch forward to this new year doing as the Apostle Paul writes in Philipians 3: 13 and 14 “I forget what is behind, stretching out to the things ahead. I run toward the goal, so that I can win the prise.” V David Malherbe is a businessand career consultant and lives in Wellington

Bok Sevens preparing for next IRB tournament in NZ The Springbok Sevens are currently riding high and occupy first place on the HSBC Sevens World Series points table. After a disappointing opening tournament at the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia the team where looking to bounce back strongly in Dubai and South Africa. The return of inspirational captain Kyle Brown proved to be vital as the Blitzboks swept all before them on the way to the tournament victory in Dubai. A hat-trick of tries from Kwagga Smith in the first half and a further score from Cecil Afrika sealed a memorable victory over New Zealand and also booked a place in the final where the unpredictable Australians where waiting. Seabelo Senatla (2), Smith, Philip Snyman and Ruhan Nel all crossed as the Springbok Sevens claimed the tile in Dubai for a fourth time, adding to their victories in 2003, 2006 and 2008. Next up for the flyers was defending their title at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The USA, Kenya and Wales were easily accounted for in the pool before the English were manhandled in the quarterfinal, avenging the earlier loss at the Gold Coast Sevens. Things were not looking great in the semi-final as the Blitz-
boks were trailing 10-0 and with Afrika in the bin they had to defend with a numerical disadvantage. Branco du Preez and Brown scored in quick succession to hand the lead back to the Springbok Sevens before Werner Kok sealed the victory with a late try. The South Africans were runnersup in 2006 and 2011 and had won their own tournament in 2008 and 2013. In an interesting coincidence all four these previous finals had been against New Zealand and 2014 proved to be no different. After having a slender 12-10 lead at the break Senatla scored an absolute screamer of a try, which was later voted the fans’ favourite. Smith scored the final try of the epic match as the hosts claimed a second successive title with the 26-17 victory. The Springbok Sevens lead the World Series with 59 points with Fiji (51), New Zealand (47) and Australia (46) all occupying the vital positions which qualify automatically for the 2016 Olympics. Next up for the team is the World Series tournaments in New Zealand (6-7 Feb) and USA (13-15 Feb). They are currently training hard at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport and will look to keep making all South Africans proud.

Premier 3-day trailrun event offers just the ‘right mix’ Chantel“Hot Pants” Nienaber secured her very first AfricanX victory on her second attempt in 2014 when she and fellow trail runner Katya Soggot of Team ProNutro Ladies completed the spectacular three days of trail running in a combined time of 08:11:58. “Katya and I were both overwhelmed by our victory in 2014,” said Nienaber. “We obviously hoped that we would win, but we knew that the competition would be tough, as it always is at the AfricanX. Thankfully we were both feeling strong throughout the race and managed to take first position on all three stages.” South Africa’s premier three-day stage trail run, the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance, returns to the majestic Elgin Grabouw region in the Western Cape the weekend of 13 to 15 March 2015. “The event draws many of the country’s top competitors, making it a bench mark event. Event organisers create just the right mix, the route is not too challenging, making it ideal for newcomers as well. It has a fantastic ‘trail-family’, vibe. The dining experiences give participants an opportunity to in- Chantel Nienaber in action durign a previous race. teract with each other. Having Her top five tips for event newcom- a plan B can help avoid hard feelings afterwards. ers are as follows: 2. Communicate: If you are strug1. Have a plan B: No trail runner enters a three-day stage race with a gling at any stage and feel that your partner, with the intention of not partner needs to ease up on the pace, completing it together. Unfortunate- you need to be open and honest. This
will help ensure that you both complete the three days together (and remain friends). 3. Warm up: Always warm up properly each day before you start running. It is also very important to stretch and massage your muscles after each stage. 4. Stream-line your hydration-pack: I was horrified to see one of my friend’s packs. She had a fully-equipped emergency kit, from extra nutrition (dated back to who knows when), to a medical kit that Florence Nightingale could work wonders with. Only carry what you need! 5. Foot care is essential: There are two secrets to avoid blisters, firstly you literally need to toughen your feet up (sorry those pedicures will have to be a thing of the past for now). Remedy: file the tips of your nails lightly with a nail file along the contour of your nail (perpendicular to the direction in which you would conventionally use a nail file), trying to round the tip of the nail, keeping them flush with your toes. Your sock will then not be inclined to lift the tip, which can create blisters. Teamwork forms an essential part of this leading stage race, with participants having to rely on each other’s experience, strength and expertise in order to complete the route. The three routes have been planned in such a way that the participants will have the opportunity to tackle a different breath-taking scenic route each day, allowing them to enjoy the full beauty of the Overberg.

Water safety a priority for Cape Mile swimming organisers Stellenbosch-based sports marketing agency, Stillwater Sports is going all out to ensure the safety of the swimmers at the inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile. “Although we are excited to host the Sanlam Cape Mile in February, with this fun event comes the serious matter of water safety. This is one area where all the boxes need to be ticked,” says Michael Meyer, managing director at Stillwater Sports. With this in mind, Stillwater Sports has commissioned the services of Jurie Wessels, a seasoned veteran in the field of water safety. “With the expertise of Wessels and his team of trained professionals, we are confident that the Sanlam Cape Mile will be a well-organised, safe mass swim that is ideal for the whole family.” Through his involvement with numerous events including the Totalsports Challenge, Totalsports XTERRA and the National Life Saving Championships, Wessels understands the complexities of hosting a mass swim. “Water safety is absolutely essen-
tial when hosting an event such as the Cape Mile,” says Wessels. “We will have 80 trained lifeguards on duty on the day with various water rescue craft including paddle boards, skis and four inflatable boats. “All our lifeguards hold the internationally recognized lifeguard rating, as issued by Lifesaving South Africa. “There will also be a number of rescue swimmers with torpedo buoys on the water. The lifeguards will wear distinctive red and yellow coloured clothing and will be situated around the entire course. We would like each entrant to rest assured knowing that all safety measures are in place. All that they need to do is focus on having fun”. Wessels and his team will be assisted by Derrick Frazer of Big Bay Events, Ian Anderson of WP Aquatics and Hanlie Ochse of Lifesaving Western Cape. Taking place at the Eikenhof Dam at the Grabouw Country Club on Saturday, 14 February, the Sanlam Cape Mile is an open water swim. The entry fees are as follows: Mile (1.6 km) / R150, 500 m / R50. Entries are open.
