Viswinkel vat vlam
Die verkeer is vir langer as ’n uur ontwrig in Birdstraat Saterdagoggend toe ’n brand uitgebreek het by Bird Street Fisheries.

Helping the hungry We read daily of people in South Africa scavenging in dustbins for food, of children walking miles for a meal, and of pensioners being pushed in wheelbarrows to a soup kitchen. These stories of real hardship and desperation can make us feel quite hopeless and helpless. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could confidently declare that there is no hunger in South Africa? Although that sounds like an impossible dream, in reality, it’s not. Hunger in South Africa is not caused by a shortage of food. South Africa can grow enough food to feed all its residents. Instead, the issue essentially boils down to a lack of access to the food. The fact that some people lack access to food is in turn a more complicated problem involving issues such as poverty and geography. However, the most important fact is that hunger is not an insurmountable problem. It is something that can be tackled and solved. And it would only take a small effort from each of us to make huge progress. FoodBank SA is working to create a coordinated national solution to hunger. It aims to solve the problem of hunger by linking food security to empowerment and social upliftment. It creates links between food producers and consumers to bring down the costs of food for poor people. It rescues thousands of tons of good food that would otherwise be wasted and provides that food to people who need it. And it looks upon hunger as a social issue, not merely a shortage of food. Play your part in ending hunger in South Africa. As a simple starting point, invest a few seconds by signing up for FoodBank SA’s free newsletter by visiting www.foodbank.org.za. Your privacy will be respected and you won’t be bombarded with information. Instead you’ll hear from FoodBank SA about once a month and will get to know the issues around hunger and food security. Perhaps you’ll be able to share your own suggestions with FoodBank SA. Meeting the challenge of hunger need not be a story of desperation. With FoodBank SA, it can be a story of hope.
) Wees bedag op enigiemand wat jou voertuig nader of skynbaar sonder doel naby verkeersligte, stopstrate, parkeergebiede of jou oprit rondstaan. ) Indien jy onraad vermoed, aktiveer jou voertuig se opsporingstoestel (indien geïnstalleer).

Marine guide for children Just in time for summer – a special marine guide for children written by Stellenbosch marine biologist, Dr Sophie von der Heyden. The 88-page book, Southern African Sea Life: A Guide for Young Explorers, was published by Struik Nature and is currently available in stores. In this book one can learn, among others, that a sea-star feeds by pushing its stomach out through its mouth and placing it directly over its prey or that Columbus crabs are sky blue. It provides an overview of Southern African ocean currents, the importance and conservation of oceans, and various marine habitats. Marine plants and animals are all discussed with the help of easy to understand text and quality colour photography. Band, Idol at Square
Fest with accommodation
David van Vuuren and his band, Free The Animals, will be performing in Stellenbosch for the first time, alongside 3rd World Spectator at the Stellenbosch Square Shopping Centre on Saturday 17 November. The free show will be held from 14:00 to 17:00 in the centre’s court area. Fans will be able to take photos, get autographs and buy albums after the show at Mugg & Bean. David van Vuuren, the winner of season seven of Idols, and his band have been causing some waves in the South African music industry for the past few months. The band has performed at all top venues in the country and are breaking the mould of what the traditional “Idol” is meant to be. 3rd World Spectator is an alternative rock band comprising a mixture of soaring vocals, huge guitars, titanic drums and emotionally charged song writing. In their first year of existence they managed to be crowned the best unsigned band in South Africa and shared the stage with international heavyweights Maroon5 and OneRepublic. Everyone is welcome to attend the free show. Please visit the website at www.stellenboschsquare.info, send an email to martilize@primelife.co.za or call Martilize on 021 880 2385 for further information.

A delicious slow beef stew Here is the recipe for a tasty slow beef stew: Ingredients 1,6 kg thick beef blade slices Olive oil 2 onions - coarsely chopped 150 g streaky bacon - coarsely sliced 2 large carrots - thinly sliced 4 large sticks celery - thinly sliced 250 g large brown mushrooms - coarsely chopped 35 g sachet of concentrated wet beef stock 30 g tomato paste 250 ml good dry red wine 2 bay leaves 4 large cloves of garlic - chopped coarsely 2 beef stock cubes - crumbled 4 large thyme stalks 250 g baby onions 250 g white button mushrooms 45 ml melted butter 45 ml flour Salt and milled black pepper 90 ml finely chopped parsley or basil Whole basil or Italian parsley Method Slice the meat off the bones. Reserve the bones and trim the meat of only the hard bits of sinew and the large bits of fat. Now cut the meat into chunks about 4 cm. Place the meat in a bowl, cover and place in the fridge until required. Cover the bottom of a large heavy-bottomed saucepan with oil and heat until hot. Quickly brown the bones of the meat and remove from pan. Add the onions and the bacon. Stir quickly to prevent catching. Add the carrots and celery and sauté until everything is nicely browned. Add the brown mushrooms and stir fry until they have released their juices. Return the bones to the pan and pour in sufficient boiling water to more than cover the food in the saucepan. Add the sachet of concentrated stock, tomato paste, red wine, bay leaves, garlic, stock cubes and thyme. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and cover. Simmer for an hour. Strain the stock into a clean

Slow beef stew bowl. Push the vegetable mixture against the strainer to extract as much of the stock as possible. You do not need the vegetable and bones mixture any longer. Set aside the stock. In another saucepan, add some olive oil. Brown the meat in batches. Return all the meat to the pan and add the stock. You really want a saucy stew, so if the stock is too little to cover the meat, add more red wine. Bring to a boil, remove any solids or scum that rise to the top, reduce heat, cover and simmer for an hour or more until the meat is to your liking. Meanwhile heat some olive oil and brown the baby onions all over. Add the mushrooms and brown as well. Once the meat is tender, add the onions and mushrooms and continue to cook another ten minute or so until the onions are tender. Finally, mix together the melted butter and flour and add spoons full of this paste to the simmering stew, stirring until the sauce is thickened to your liking. Now taste and adjust with salt, milled black pepper and even chopped thyme and minced garlic. Stir in the parsley or basil and scatter with the whole herb leaves. Serve with creamy horseradish mashed potato and steamed broccoli. – www.food24.com
Sanlam’s ‘Sing ’it’ is back Building on last year’s success, Sanlam and LitNet have just launched the second Sing ’it lyrics writing competition. The competition invites South Africans aged 18 years and older with a passion for songwriting to submit their lyrics in a bid to win R50 000. The competition is a partnership between lead sponsor Sanlam, organisers LitNet and media partner MK (DStv channel 324). This year involves six top local artists or bands who will do the first round of judging and compose songs from their chosen lyrics. The artists who will also endorse the competition through Facebook and Twitter, are Tumi and the Volume, Louise Carver, Zinkplaat, Zaki Ibrahim, ekhouvanjou, okay! and 3rd World Spectator. To enter the competition, visit www.singit.co.za, or you can SMS your lyrics to 45964. The closing date for entries is 21 December 2012. All approved entries will be published on LitNet. Each band/artist will choose their favourite lyric from the pool of submissions, and compose and record a song from it. Five
of these chosen lyrics will win R5 000 cash. All six songs will be made available for the public to download via Facebook. The song with the most votes becomes the overall winner and the lyric writer wins R50 000. The winning song will also be produced into a music video and the winner will have the opportunity of featuring in it. André Kearns, sponsorship manager at Sanlam said Sanlam is very proud to be a sponsor of this competition for the second year. According to Gerdus Senekal, Sing ’it project manager for LitNet, the competition offers an exciting platform to get a creative product that would not have been possible without the contribution of the amateur and the fan. “ It’s great to see this collaboration between South African artists and the people that support them. The fan’s role in the music industry is perhaps too often understated, and we wanted to show that LitNet as a community truly does voice South African culture in a very tangible way.” For more information visit www.facebook.com/singit.co.za or www.singit.co.za.

Wear your lung on your sleeve Lung cancer kills more people than breast, colon, kidney, liver, skin and prostate cancer combined. Should you, however, think that it’s a disease that only affects smokers, Gideon van der Spuy can tell you otherwise. “If I’ve smoked three whole cigarettes in my life that is a lot. I’m one of the unfortunate people who developed lung cancer even though I am not a smoker or ever fitted the typical lung cancer profile.” Gideon was diagnosed with stage three adenosquamous carcinoma which metastasised to his rib in August last year. Although he’s from the medical fraternity, he was devastated as he never thought he’d get the disease. He wasn’t a smoker, there was no family history of lung cancer and he lived a healthy lifestyle as an avid canoeist, cyclist and golfer. The disease has changed his life and affected his work, so much so that he went on early retirement. Many people associate lung cancer with

smoking, but this is not the sole cause. According to research, as many as 25% of people with lung cancer have never smoked. Furthermore, research has shown that lung cancer is no longer a male-dominated disease. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death globally and is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in Southern Africa. About 1,18 million people pass away each year because of this disease. Despite this, the majority of patients with lung cancer are diagnosed when the disease is at an advanced stage and has spread to other parts of the body. To address the need for enhanced awareness, Be Cancer Aware, the South African cancer information hub, has launched the “Wear your lung on your sleeve” initiative for Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November. The initiative encourages people to do their bit to go out and create awareness. Lung cancer awareness armbands can be ordered from www.becanceraware.co.za.

Entrepreneurship Fair at The Woodmill Creative thinkers from the business world are set to gather at the Seda Entrepreneurship Fair in late November with the aim of growing this sector. The Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) will host this fair in partnership with the Stellenbosch University (SU), the Stellenbosch municipality and participating venue, The Woodmill. The fair runs from 27 till 29 November. Errol Gardner from the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA), André Gouws from GAP Entrepreneur and Nic Dupper from Flying Kites are some of the speakers at the event, positioning entrepreneurship as the backbone of a limping global economy. Seda encourages both start-up businesses and more specifically, existing businesses, to participate in the fair. It aims to facilitate the growth of small businesses, hence the fair’s slogan and theme is “Expanding and Growing Your Business”. The fair is an opportunity for business owners to network with Seda’s business advisors and the other support organisations who will be exhibiting. This would be an ideal platform for business owners to network with each other as well. Seda will be showcasing access to opportunities and support for all SMME’s. The event includes an exhibition of business support agents who assist small businesses. It will also have a breakaway room where each exhibitor will have the opportunity to market
their product to the public. Hourly presentations are planned. Confirmed exhibitors include Absa who will be giving away free prizes, Cape Chamber of Commerce, Educraft, Flying Kites, FNB, GAP Entrepreneur, Innovative Finance, NYDA, Productivity SA, SARS, Seda, ShowMe Stellenbosch, Standard Bank, Stellenbosch Municipality, SU including their Institute for Student Leadership Development, Centre for Applied Entrepreneurship -and InnovUS Technology Transfer, the dti Cooperative Development unit and the dti TEO unit. Persons who pre-register by confirming attendance via email or fax to attend the fair – which is free to the public – will receive access to lucky draws that will run throughout the three days. Seda already provides business development and support services for small enterprises through its national network in partnership with other role players in the small enterprise support arena. It implements programmes targeted to business development in areas prioritised by the government. The Seda Entrepreneurship Fair runs on Tuesday 27 November, from 10:00 to 18:00; Wednesday 28 November from 10:00 to 21:00 with a networking session for existing and established businesses from 18:00 onwards; and Friday 29 November from 10:00 to 18:00. The fair includes a business exhibition, speakers, as well as food –and refreshment vendors. For more information call 021 415 1600, e-mail fair@seda.org.za or fax 086 275 6216.

Moms recruit from home There’s an exciting opportunity for a work force of millions of people whose experience, education and skills are just beginning to be utilized to their potential in the business community. Otherwise known as “mom professionals” these individuals, who have put their careers on hold to stay home with their children, are now finding flexible work that can be done from their home office with RecruitMyMom (www.recruitmymom.co.za) Created by working mother Phillipa Geard this matchmaking service provides businesses with top talent for temporary, part-time and permanent projects ranging from everything from accounting, administration, legal expertise and project management to web-design. Businesses benefit with the convenience of creating one, rather than multiple job postings, that will reach several qualified candidates at no charge to them. For mom professionals, it enables them to capitalize on the freedom and flexibility to do top-rated work while avoiding work-fromhome scams that litter the internet. Additionally mom professionals have greater freedom to choose between family and career.
Geard, after deciding not to go back to work after her first child was born, created a home based marketing business with a partner. She realised over the years just how many highly skilled and professional mothers want to work from home, but lack the resources to be able to access businesses who need their skills. It was from this that Geard created the RecruitMyMom.co.za platform. The future plan is to provide a variety of tools and resources to help mothers network, learn and grow in their role as a home-based working mother. These will include business support, a members directory and networking opportunities. “I am passionate about helping mothers reach their full potential, while creating a lifestyle that enables them more freedom and flexibility to truly enjoy their family and their life” says Geard. “There are so many talented, experienced, educated mothers out there who just need a push to get started. RecruitMyMom provides businesses an easy and effective way to connect with experienced highly skilled Mom professionals.” More information about RecruitMyMom can be found at www.recruitmymom.co.za.
