Crime in brief V A fire in Nkanini in Kayamandi claimed the life of one person. According to Lt Natalie Martin, the incident happened at Nkanini, Kayamandi at around 03:20 on Friday 3 April when four shacks caught alight. She said that fire fighters came to extinguish the fire. A 24-year-old man died in the fire. V A man was shot in the arm during a robbery in Kayamandi. The incident happened on Wednesday 1 April at around 10:30 at Trompies Cash Store in 8th Avenue. Lt Natalie Martin said before the incident the complainant and co-worker were inside the shop and that the burglar gate was locked. “The complainant saw two unknown males talking to his co-worker, but he could not hear the conversation. He then saw the men trying to grab his co-worker (through the burglar gate) but he pulled her away and one of the suspects fired one shot from outside. They also told the co-worker to open the burglar gate. His co-worker tried to run away but another shot was fired at him, hitting him in his left arm. After a third shot was fired, the co-worker opened the burglar gate and the suspects ordered them to lie on the floor.” Martin said that the suspects took cash, cigarettes, food and a cellphone. No arrests have been made yet. Anyone with information can call Stellenbosch detectives at 0 021 809 9140. V Cloetesville police arrested a person for dealing in drugs. According to Lt Col Mark Adonis, station commander of the Cloetesville SAPS, the suspect was arrested during an operation in 11 Mountview Flat, Rhode Street, Cloetesville. He said during a patrol a suspicious person was stopped and searched by constable Maposa of Cloetesville SAPS. “A total of 21 stoppe dagga were found on the suspect and he was arrested.” Adonis said the police found 5,8 gr of tik on a person in La Colline Street in Stellenbosch. “A suspicious vehicle was monitored. One of our high-flyers was arrested during the search of the vehicle. A case of possession of drugs was opened by Sgt Paulsen. According to Adonis, members of the police also received information regarding drug dealing in 22 Davy Street in Idas Valley. “Tik, dagga and mandrax were found in the possession of three suspects.” Sgt Van Graan and Warrant Officer Jacobs opened a case of possession of drugs. Adonis said that no drug houses will be tolerated in Cloetesville and Idas Valley. He thanked the community for their commitment and trust in the local police station. ER24 welcomes child car seat regulation ER24 welcomes the new regulation to the National Road Traffic Act that aims to protect children by use of a child car seat. The use of a child car seat for all children under the age of three will be compulsory from May 1 2015. Motorists that have children under the age of three unrestrained in a vehicle will be issued a fine. Several motorists still refuse to take seriously the constant warnings and calls by emergency services and authorities to have children properly restrained in vehicles. On a daily basis, while on the road, you will find young children jumping on back seats, hanging out of windows and sitting on passenger’s laps. Upon speaking to parents some will tell you that they never grew up with child car seats and they survived. Parents may also tell you that their children do not like being restrained and cry constantly. Some parents insist you not tell them what to do with their children. Times have changed. The number of vehicles on the road today has increased drastically. With the number of cars, buses, bikes and other modes of

transport we are surrounded by everyday and the number of distractions on the road, there is no better and safer option but to have your child restrained. If your child does not like being restrained, take responsibility and make them understand that it is not up for discussion. The sad truth is ER24 and other emergency services attend to horrific collisions involving children on a weekly basis. Majority of unrestrained children are flung out of vehicles and either sustain critical injuries or die in collisions. For those parents who cannot afford new car seats, remember that there are organisations that sell second hand car seats or hand them out for an affordable donation. While the law forces parents to use child car seats for children under the age of three, this does not mean that adults should ignore the need to restrain older children. Make sure they are restrained appropriately. Remember you cannot undo death. The choice you make could be the difference between life and death. Make sure your child is appropriately restrained.

What is the appropriate restraint for your child? ER24 offers the following advice: V Infants should ride rear-facing at least until they are a year old. Once they exceed the weight or height limit set by the manufacturer of the infant safety seat, they should continue to ride rear-facing in a convertible safety seat. It is best to keep toddlers rear-facing as long as possible. V When they have outgrown this seat, they should use a forward-facing safety seat with a full harness. This should be used until they exceed the weight and/or height limit set by the manufacturer of the seat. V Children who have outgrown a convertible safety seat should use a booster seat until they are at least four feet. V Children who are tall enough to wear an adult seat belt should still ride in the back seat until they are 13 years old. Adjust the seat belt so the lap belt crosses the child’s upper thighs and the diagonal belt crosses the upper chest at a point between the neck and shoulder. ER24’s Emergency Contact Centre can be reached 24 hours a day on 0 084 124.

The children were also treated to cooldrink, fruit and sweets from Feeding in Action’s donations.

Food parcels for Kylemore Feeding in Action and the Stellenbosch CANproject gave children in Kylemore a special treat to celebrate Easter. On Wednesday 1 April more than 200 food parcels containing tuna sandwiches, made from Stellenbosch CAN donations, were distributed at the feeding point at the Kylemore community hall. Feeding in Action supplemented the food parcels with fruit, cooldrink and sweets from their donations. “The children greeted us with a song and were very well behaved as they waited to receive their food parcels,” says Emma Henson from the Stellenbosch CAN-project. This specific feeding point has been run for more than 12 years by Siena Charles, who receives weekly and monthly food supplies from Feeding in Action. Siena started the feeding point from her home where she fed those in need until one day there were so many mouths to feed that she had to move the feeding point to a bigger premises. Siena says that the winter months are most difficult when there is no work on the farms and many members of her community are unemployed. Siena says she is very grateful for projects such as Feeding in Action and Stellenbosch CAN, because their donations will help to provide food for all the hungry people during the winter. Stellenbosch CAN is a project launched by Eikestad Mall in partnership with Feeding in

Through SU’s Chemistry Outreach Initiative (SUNCOI), co-owned by Rehana and prof Klaus Koch, she is helping disadvantaged schools to complete their science practicals at the university’s chemistry laboratories. Rehana says she wanted to help the local high schools, because they are required by the Western Cape Education Department to do chemistry practicals, but had nowhere to do them. “How can the learners do practicals if they don’t have a lab at their school or the necessary resources?” And so she got to work and invited the first group of grade 11 learners to the university for SUNCOI Practicals with Purpose, where she helped them complete their first chemistry practical. In 2013 she launched SUNCOI Teaching the Teachers the Nuts and Bolts of Chemistry, which trains teachers to present practicals, and also had the first group of grade 12s for their practical. Based on the initial success of the project, the chemistry department was able to host Grade 12s, 11s and 10s in 2014. Rehana says rich and poor schools’ reactions to the practicals were the same and their initiative changed the whole practicals

regime. The practicals Rehana has designed for the initiative are now being applied in many Western Cape schools, as well as some Eastern Cape and Northern Cape schools, because they provide effective guidelines and are more cost-effective. One of the biggest challenges for poorer schools is buying the chemicals needed for practical experiments. With the aid of KIMIX, Rehana has designed micro kits which contain the minimum amount of chemicals and consumables required to present a practical, as well as all the tools the teachers need. Rehana says that there is a huge gap in the students’ academic performance in matric compared to their first year at university. “When the students come to the SU for their practicals, we see that although they have distinctions in science, they are failing chemistry. “We had to bridge that gap in order to get their tertiary academic performance to be reflected in their marks.” The learners’ hunger for knowledge is not the only thing being satisfied. Thanks to McDonald’s Stellenbosch they left the university with full minds and full stomachs. Rehana hopes to show the learners who are invited to SU that they can rise above their circumstances. “I want to show the students that they can be whatever they want to be. Your circumstances don’t dictate your future.” Dr Malgas-Enus would also like to thank Advanced African Technology (AAT) for sponsoring SUNCOI.

Traditional games at vintage ideas market in Simondium

Visitors to this year’s Vintage Ideas Market at Simondium’s Country Lodge will not only be able to be inspired by all things vintage, but can participate in some vintage games. On Sunday 26 April, visitors will be able to watch the Pniel petanque players in action alongside the Peacock Palace. This traditional version of the game boules originated in France in the 19th century and is enjoying renewed interest. Market goers can become part of the action and join in the game. The Pniel petanque players club was established in 2003, but the team has been playing together since 1994. Started by Pniel resident Freddie Simpson after his French brother-inlaw introduced him to the game, petanque fever quickly caught on and even spread to Paarl, where the team from the Forum for Retired Persons are now 30-members strong. They regularly participate in national competitions and hope to attract newcomers during their demonstration. “This is a game that the whole family can play. We even have some players in wheelchairs and use a special magnetised stick to pick up the balls when our knees are too stiff. It will be fun to show visitors how to play

First aid personnel bring an injured player from the field.

Guard against head injuries Sport - be it a passion, to stay fit or just for recreational purposes, always ensure measures are in place to reduce the risk of sustaining injuries. With the focus on head injury awareness, ER24 is urging people to be aware that these injuries are often sustained while participating in sport, especially contact sports. Know what to do if someone sustains a head injury. While head injuries are common in sport, these injuries and the prevention thereof are taken seriously. Looking at rugby in South Africa for example, a number of programmes have been established to reduce injuries. In 2006, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) in conjunction with the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund embarked on developing a plan to reduce the increasing number of serious head, neck and spine injuries associated with the game. The BokSmart National Rugby Safety programme was officially launched in 2009. Its guiding principle is to use an evidence-driven and evidence-based approach to set the rugby safety standard duty of care required for rugby played in South Africa. BokSmart promotes safety in schools and clubs in a number of ways including free mandatory coach and referee education on related techniques and strategies around injury prevention and management. Dr. Wayne Viljoen, BokSmart manager at SARU, said there has been a decrease in serious head, neck and spine injuries at clubs and schools since the establishment of BokSmart. Some aspects that contributed to the decrease include coaching, refereeing, player preparation, education and awareness. Coaches, referees and medical staff on duty at matches and practices have contributed to the decrease by implementing correct injury prevention and management strategies. “Without these important role players, a programme such as BokSmart cannot be effective,” said Viljoen. BokSmart Spineline BokSmart Spineline is a dedicated emergency helpline for potentially serious concussion, head, neck and spine injuries sustained during a rugby match or practice. This toll free number is linked to ER24. ER24 provides telephonic advice, initial telephonic screening and dispatches or arranges suitable transportation of the in-

jured player to the nearest and most appropriate medical facility. If a player is unconscious or unresponsive, or has an obvious head, neck or spine rugby injury, contact BokSmart Spineline on 0 0800 678 678 to log the incident or access emergency advice. Signs and symptoms Viljoen said all head injuries should be approached and handled with a potential neck injury in mind until proven otherwise. “Do not roll an unconscious player over without first stabilising the neck. If a player complains about substantial neck pain, he should be managed strictly according to cervical spine injury protocols and be stabilised and removed from the field on a spinal board. “Once a significant neck injury has been excluded, the whole principle around concussion is recognise and remove,” he said. What you need to look for: V A player who has a dazed, vacant or blank expression. V A player who is lying motionless on the ground, gets up very slowly, is unsteady on the feet, has balance problems or falls over, suffers loss of consciousness or has a lack of responsiveness. V Confusion, grabbing or clutching of the head, convulsions. V A player who is more emotional or irritable. The player might tell you they have a headache, are experiencing dizziness, struggling with or blurred vision, experiencing nausea or vomiting, fatigue, drowsiness, a feeling of pressure in the head and sensitivity to light or noise. All players who are suspected of having a concussion during a rugby match or training must be removed from the field of play and may not return to play or train on the same day.

Camp key to Maties hockey’s uniqueness A total of 24 teams were present at the 33rd annual hockey camp presented by the Maties hockey club.

This year is the 33rd camp presented by the Steinhoff Maties hockey club. There were 24 teams from 13 schools at the camp. Some 50 members of the club are involved with

the camp that was held during the past school holidatys. Some of the schools at the camp included Stellenbosch, Overberg, Hermanus, Sentraal and Glenwood House. At the camp players from the various schools were divided into groups and each team was assigned a player from Maties as a coach. They were coached in all the aspects of the game. The school coach

of each team is also at the camp and they participate in specialised sessions presented by former national coaches Jenny King and Paul Revington. This was King’s 26th camp as a player-coach and coach. Maties’ Adene Bennett, Vida Ryan and Vidette Ryan have attended double figure hockey camps already with Bennett and Vidette having attended 12 camps, while Vida has

been involved in 11. “To really understand it, you have to experience it,” said Vidette. “At this camp school players get the opportunity to be coached by players who just might be their heroes. We have various current and former national players and most of them are here at the camp.” Both Vida and Vidette have been at the Olympics and current national players Dylan Swanepoel, Pierre

de Voux, Keenan Horne and Daniel Bell are coaching at the camp. Vida added: “Every aspect of being a hockey player is addressed. The actual playing, attitude and also what will set you apart from the average players. This camp is such a big part of what the hockey club is all about.” According to both Vida and Vidette the camp is also vital to the development of the player-coaches.
