Stellenbosch CPF back on track

After almost two years, the Stellenbosch Community Policing Forum (CPF) will host a public meeting on 24 July. Additional executive members of the committee will be elected at the meeting. The CPF’s role in the community is to facilitate cooperation between the police and the community so that they can work closely together to solve problems and address fear of crime, physical and social disorder and neighbourhood decay. According to the chairman, Roelof van der Merwe, he is tired of reading news articles about crimes such as murder, rape or robbery. “Most of us are trapped in our homes by burglar bars, alarm systems, electrical fencing and locked gates. “Zero tolerance may be a possible solution with which to discourage criminals from acquiring resources through crime. A further solution may be to encourage them to contribute positively to a booming economy. “There is no doubt that the way in which humanity seeks to address crime worldwide does not yield the solutions we need to lead lives free of the stress that crime imposes on us. “We need the collective brain power, knowledge and sheer determination of the entire community to fight crime. The majority of people are waiting for someone else to do something. Crime is such a disas-
ter that we cannot afford to stand back any more. “The level of involvement can range from a mere awareness that someone, somewhere is busy thinking about the problem, being on the lookout for providing information through social media and / or becoming actively involved in the management of the CPF, conducting projects such as think tanks and anticrime campaigns. “We strongly urge you to contribute brain power, lend a hand and dispense good wishes and look forward to welcoming you at the next meeting of the CPF on 24 July.” Van der Merwe has asked persons associated with various associations and organisations, local companies, sports clubs, churches or other organizations to become a part of the CPF and send representatives to help strengthen the Stellenbosch CPF to really make a difference. You are also entitled to join in your personal capacity.” The meeting on 24 July will take place at 18:00 at the Stellenbosch police office recreational hall in Du Toit Street. For more information on the CPF and the public meeting, call the chairman Roelof van der Merwe at 083 4435687 or e-mail stbcpf@gmail.com or Lt Nathalie Martin at the Stellenbosch SAPS at 021 809 5061. Brrr!

Mayor discusses issues of concern with Idas Valley Ministers’ Forum The executive mayor for the Stellenbosch Municipality, Conrad Sidego, met with the Idas Valley Ministers’ Forum last week Wednesday to discuss various issues of concern. The burning point of the discussion was however about the municipal budget (that has been recently tabled) and how it caters for housing, unemployment and youth development. The ministers also expressed their concern about the sewage problems facing the municipality, particularly as it affects the residents of Idas Valley. The meeting on 6 June follows earlier meetings with the ministers’ fraternal and a letter addressed to the mayor in April 2013. The mayor and the delegates confirmed their goodwill towards each
other. According to the municipal spokesperson, Vernon Bowers, the discussions about housing explored solar energy panels and the potential cost savings to households and its positive effect on the environment. The status of the housing development plan regarding the envisaged breakdown of the type of housing in different cost categories was also given attention, as well as the needs of backyard dwellers, with specific reference to electricity and sewage infrastructure provision. According to Bowers mayor Sidego indicated that, even though the municipality has no mandate for budgetary provision of youth development programmes, it funds various NGOs focusing on youth development
through its Grants-in-Aid and other programmes. He acknowledged, however, that more needs to be done to develop and empower the youth who often face drug and alcohol problems which are the evils of our communities, Bowers added. Local economic development and the development of a tourism route for Idas Valley received attention due to the churches’ cooperation with Stellenbosch360 and Open Africa. Other issues included the Municipal Land Audit, community halls, outside toilets, street lights and farm evictions. Bowers says the executive mayor undertook to provide detailed responses to these and other issues by no later than Wednesday 26 June 2013.

She also performed for US President Bill Clinton and other luminaries. New York singer and songwriter Robin S enjoyed chart success with hit singles “Show me the love” and “Luv 4 Luv” and American R&B-pop singer Sybil is best known for her covers of Dionne Warwick’s hits such as “Don’t make me over” and “Walk on by”.
Robin S, one of the Soul Divas Other fan favourites include “When I’m good and ready” and her version of “The love I lost”.

Golden Trolley 2013 blanket campaign Many people will once again have to face the harsh weather without a roof over their heads, a snug coat against the frosty wind and without a warm blanket as protection against the cold of night. This is why Checkers and Shoprite stores in the Western Cape have teamed up with Radio Tygerberg for a winter-collection campaign that encourages customers to open their hearts and wrap those in need in warmth, love and hope this winter. These stores join forces with Radio Tygerberg to support Shiloh Synergy – a group of projects committed to the holistic upliftment of underprivileged communities in the Western Cape – with a request for new blankets. The public is invited to contribute to this worthy cause by donating blankets at Checkers, Checkers Hyper or Shoprite stores in the Western Cape between 1 June and 31 July 2013. The items can be deposited into the Golden Trolleys found at the entrance of the stores. All items collected will be distributed to needy communities throughout the Western Cape by Shiloh Synergy.
Belangstellendes kan Siena by 078 912 9604 bel.

Municipality reaches out to entrepreneurs Starting your own business can be daunting, and the thought of licensing it, a nightmare. However, this need not be so, and a booklet published by Stellenbosch Municipality recently sets out to explain why. How to open a business in Stellenbosch was issued last week as part of a Municipal “red tape reduction programme”, according to Local Economic Development manager, Widmark Moses.
The manual is part one of wider efforts to remove barriers to entrepreneurship. The e-booklet is a comprehensive guide on what to do, when to do it, and who to contact when getting a business licence. That is, if you even need one. “Prior to 1991, you had to apply for a licence to open any business – regardless of the type. This has changed: now you need a licence for a limited number of businesses only,” according to the guide.

Still, a licence is necessary for any business selling food, offering health and entertainment facilities (from escort agencies to beauty-salons), hawkers and anyone wanting to sell alcohol. If your business falls into one of these categories, then: ) You need to complete a business licence application form. These are available at the municipal building or on their website. ) A R25 application fee must be submitted together with your form.
) Your application will be sent to the applicable departments for approval, for instance, Environment Health or Fire Services. ) Once all the necessary departments’ approval is obtained, your licence will be issued. “This pamphlet is the beginning of our efforts to reduce red tape for business start-ups,” said Moses. He reported that the main difficulty facing businesses in the licensing process is failure to comply with the standards of independent
approval bodies. “I actually recommend that owners go to these authorities before they even apply for their licence. In that way they know they have everything in order,” said Moses. If approval is acquired before application, according to Moses, the business licence can be issued within days.
