Talent 360 in Idasvallei ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
Deelnemers kon sang-, drama- of dans-items voorlê.

Children take wing with Usiko ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
REPRESENTATIVES of one of Usiko’s biggest sponsor, British Airways, came to Stellenbosch last week to learn more about the project they are supporting. The delegation spent time learning about Usiko, a Jamestown-based non-profit organisation working to uplift youths at risk, at Stellenzicht High School in Jamestown, and spoke to children from Cloetesville and Jamestown who are involved in the project. The delegation were very interested in what the youths had to say about the organisation, and what the impact of their involvement with the programme has been. After the formalities were completed, the delegation helped to plant some trees on the school grounds and gave the children some healthy time off with a soccer game. Usiko, which was established 11 years ago, has two main functions. The first is a courtbased diversion programme for youths who have been in conflict with the law. “This is the only programme of its kind in the whole of the Cape Winelands District,” says Rudi Oosterwyk of the Gaia Foundation, another of Usiko’s sponsors. “The programme focuses on helping the child and his or her parents to deal with the issues through a mentorship programme to ensure that the child does not revert to crime again.” The programme is mostly for children who
have committed lesser offences, such as theft or shoplifting, and Usiko has seen many successes throughout. The second focus of Usiko’s work is on youth at risk of becoming involved in gangsterism, drugs and other hazards. At the moment the programme is focused on Stellenzicht and Cloetesville Senior Secondary Schools, where the risk of The British Airways delegation are seen here with some of the children and mentors getting involved in involved in Usiko. these activities is tims and their communities by reawakening deemed to be very high. Santa’s dog box project THE Santa Dog and Cat Box Project is an inspiring community initiative that collects personalized Christmas gifts for abandoned animals. Equally, the project is about parents teaching their own children the joy of giving. Make your own box by finding an empty show box. Fill the box with gifts - including R100 in cash - and a paper adult and kitten tin or pouch of food (for cats) or a tin or small bag of dog good (for a dog box). You could also add other items such as a toy, a collar and lead or brush to your box.
If R100 is to much, club in with some friends, or give what you can. Decorate the box by making drawing, painting or sticking cut-outs on the box. Label your box and clearly write Cat or Dog, depending on your gift of choice. The boxes can be taken to Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch where it can be left under their tree. Have your photo taken with your box! AWSS is hoping to reach a target of 400 boxes before 20 December. For more information call Nicci on 021 883 9129 or 083 573 6720.

The information session is free and open to all Kayamandi residents. The meetings will take place on 20 and 21 September from 14:00 to 16:00 at the Kayamandi Library. For more information call the Route 360 offices and speak to Veronica (Tembeka) or Marina at 021 883 3584.

Learn more about lymphoma 1995 WORLD Cup rugby star, Chris Rossouw, funny-man Kevin Perkins and Ilse-Mari Hodgskiss of Big Brother SA fame joined forces recently for the lymphoma awareness campaign. All having had lymphoma themselves, they are backing the “I am the voice of lymphoma” initiative which aims to increase awareness and early diagnosis of this dread disease. Blood cancers, especially lymphoma, aren’t always understood or mentioned very often in the media. The lack of knowledge combined with that fact that lymphoma symptoms mimic those of a common flu, appears to have an influence on why this disease is often misdiagnosed and diagnosed at a late stage. 15 September 2012 marked the 9th anniversary of World Lymphoma Awareness Day. This initiative was originally started by the global Lymphoma Coalition, and aspires to bring together all concerned healthcare professionals, patients and caretakers in a joint effort to inform the public about the early warning signs and symptoms of lymphoma. Lymphoma is one of the more aggressive and fastest spreading cancers and it is estimated to become the second or third largest cancer by 2025. Over a million people worldwide live with lymphoma, and nearly 1 000 people are diagnosed with cancer every day. See websites www.becanceraware.co.za or www.lymphomacoalition.org.
Fritz speaks on child grants IT is of grave concern that children are being kept from their school work because their parents have to take them with to re-register for child grants, a social development official has said. It recently came to light that children are missing out when their parents go to re-register at the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). “I have spoken with the regional head for Sassa in the Western Cape to appeal for alternative arrangements in this regard,” says social development MEC Albert Fritz. “I have suggested that they extend their operating hours purely for this project, so that parents can present their children either after school or at weekends. “I have for a long time been advocating this type of conditionality – where the receipt of a child-support grant has to be conditional upon children attending school. Parents must take responsibility and be held accountable when their children are not in school.” Fritz says he recognises the need for this source of income in many poor households across the country, but says it must never be obtained at the expense of a child’s education. “Their education is their one chance out of a life of poverty and dependence on grants.”

Trevor sê hy het destyds as 20jarige by die US begin werk, omdat hier goeie voordele was.
departement Politieke Wetenskap gestudeer. Hy is derde sekretaris by die Suid-Afrikaanse konsulaat in Algerië. “Hy is ’n veelsydige mens.

Mushroom macaroni and cheese Young chefs learn from the best TO celebrate the existence of The American Express Fine Dining Awards in South Africa for the past 15 years, Amex used this year’s wards to give a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to a group of aspiring student chefs across the Western Cape. The 15 students were identified for a mentorship opportunity with renowned chef Bruce Robertson, who has spent the past few years cooking for the rich and famous and counts reality TV star Gordon Ramsay as one of his former bosses and mentors. These awards are the annual gathering of the food industry royalty in South Africa. For these aspiring chefs, having an opportunity to cook for the toughest food critics in the country was a challenge they accepted gracefully. “After spending two intense days of mentorship with chef Bruce, you could tell that the sky was the only limit of the ambitious class of 2012,” a spokesperson says. This is the first time in the 15-year existence of the programme that young people have been brought in to learn from masters in the trade. In the food industry Bruce Robertson is highly regarded, and an opportunity to cook with him is priceless. “The experience we received on the day was so valuable, and to rub shoulders with chef Bruce Robertson and all the top chefs in the country was a dream come true,” says Stellenbosch student Liezl Vermeulen. “We will never forget this day. Keeping your heart healthy – for always DURING September we celebrate the heart – a vital organ that’s every beat feeds your body with the necessary blood and nutrients that keep it going. Here follows Kele Moshugi, a registered dietician at RoyalMnandi, tips to keep your heart healthy: ) Follow a healthy and balanced diet: It must consist of more than just three meals a day. All food groups should be represented such as grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans. ) Eat small, regular meals: Eat at least six smaller meals each day. This will supply you with more sustainable energy. ) Follow a low-fat diet: The best way to reduce Kele Moshugi saturated and trans fats in your diet is to limit the amount of solid fats you add to food when cooking and serving. ) Read food labels carefully and be aware of the list of ingredients: Ingredients are always listed in order of quantity present in products.
) Increase the fibre content of your daily diet: The increased intake of fibre has a beneficial effect in the prevention of coronary heart disease. ) Eat less sugar and refined starches: Refined starches include foods like white bread, white rice, sweets and biscuits. ) Achieve and maintain your ideal body weight: Find out what your Body Mass Index is and try to achieve and maintain your ideal body weight. ) Increase physical activity: Physical activity lowers blood pressure, slows resting pulse rate and lowers blood cholesterol. ) Go for regular blood lipid profile follow-ups at your healthcare practitioner: Ask your healthcare practitioner to test your blood lipid profile at least once every 12 months and every three months if you have known elevated blood cholesterol levels. ) Reduce the sodium in your food: Eating a lot of sodium can contribute to high blood pressure.

Join in on Santa Shoebox 2012 OVER 4 000 children from 46 facilities in Stellenbosch and the Winelands have been registered with the Santa Shoebox Project this year. The Santa Shoebox Project is a non-profit organisation that has been working to collect gifts at Christmas time for thousands of underprivileged children since 2006. Parents are encouraged to involve their children. Donors personally choose and fill gift boxes and then decorate and label each one with the recipient’s name.
Uniquely, the donor knows the name, age, gender and care institution of the child the gift was bought for. The Santa Shoebox project not only manages the network and distributes the gifts, but also provides content guidelines for each individual gift box. Donors can start registering online by visiting the website at www.santashoebox.co.za. The drop-off in Stellenbosch will take place from 23 to 25 October at the NG Kerk Welgelegen.

Tax season started THE first deadline of the 2012 tax season is coming up. The season has been open since 1 July, so if you haven’t done so yet, it’s time to get that income tax return to the South African Revenue Service (Sars). Sars recommends filing your return early and electronically – and that taxpayers be totally honest about the information they provide. Need help? You can call the Sars contact centre on 0800 00 SARS (7277) for advice. When calling the contact centre, make sure you have your ID number and income tax reference number at hand for speedy assistance. You can also visit your nearest Sars branch, where an agent will file electronically for you. Make sure you take all your supporting documents with you. Don’t miss the deadline This is really important. If you submit your return after the deadline you will face an administrative penalty of at least R250 for every month that your return was outstanding. The deadlines The deadline for all taxpayers who wish to submit their tax return manually, by posting it or dropping it off at a Sars drop-box, is 28 September.
The deadline for all taxpayers who submit their returns electronically at a Sars branch is 23 November. Non-provisional taxpayers who file via eFiling also have until 23 November to submit their returns. Provisional taxpayers who file via eFiling have until 31 January 2013 to submit their returns. What’s new? Help-You-eFile will make completing your individual income tax return (ITR12) easier. You “share” your eFiling browser screen with a Sars agent who will then talk you through the process, helping you address any difficulties you experience in completing your return. Watch Sars’s YouTube video for more info. To initiate a Help-You-eFile session, simply click on the Help-You-eFile icon on your eFiling login page or once you have successfully logged into your eFiling profile, receive your Session ID, call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 SARS (7277) and let one of Sars’ agents assist you. Are you prepared for a major catastrophe? HEARING the siren of the fire engine as it rushes past your home on a Saturday morning prompts thoughts of where it’s going, whose house or business is burning, and the nature and scale of the danger or loss to those involved. Uncomfortable moments like these can often, however, prove instructive – “Contemplating the consequences of one’s own home burning down often sets in motion a valuable appraisal of personal priorities and the protections in place – or otherwise – to preserve these,” says Gari Dombo, managing director of Alexander Forbes Insurance. Considering how much time, savings and effort are put into building and paying off a home, and how long this takes, it is surprising how poorly many people are covered for major disaster. Yet the term “disaster” is relative. To the average person, a disaster would be damage that they could not afford to repair, compromising their lifestyle to an intolerable degree, either because the scope of their cover was too narrow, or because they were simply under-insured for the risks they were running. As far as scope is concerned, all buildings policies list the major causes of damage within their perils, such as fire, explosion, storm, flood and earthquake. While at first glance this seems to cover most of the likely causes of major disaster,
Dombo warns consumers to watch out for policies that: ) exclude tremors caused by mining operations – while it is unlikely that a whole house can be destroyed by mine tremors, having to fix multiple cracks over time could prove unaffordable, or wreck the value of your home; ) provide subsidence cover but exclude damage caused by “active soils” (soil expansion and contraction due to changing moisture content) – you should be aware that a wider form of cover is available, without the soil moisture expansion and contraction exclusion, even if this means a higher premium; ) provide accidental damage cover with a limit when you may require accidental damage cover up to the full sum insured – Dombo advises consumers “check whether they have accidental damage cover and whether this cover would still apply, for example, if a boulder rolled down the hill and destroyed their home”. Scope of cover aside, the other major cause of serious problems when major disaster strikes is under-insurance. The best advice is for policyholders to routinely check that the scope of their policies covers the full scale of loss that they could potentially suffer, while also regularly updating the value of those possessions that they cannot afford to replace.

Straighten up and take note of back pain BENEDICT PATHER TWO billion rand – that’s how much South Africa spends on treatment for back pain every year according to the South African Society of Physiotherapy (SASP). Back Injury Awareness Week aims
to highlight the complications associated with back pain while teaching people methods of preventing back related injuries. Reports suggest that people who spend longer hours working behind a computer and watching television may unknowingly be causing back problems which they’ll detect at a later stage.
Here is a physiotherapist from Suspi busy assessing patient David Kappel.
PHOTO: EUNICE VISAGIE
Investigations also show that this has a negative impact on our economy as backache is a leading cause of absenteeism from work, resulting in a decrease in productivity. Margaret van den Heever, physiotherapist at the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute (SUSPI), says “about 85% of all people above 30 will at some point of their lives experience back pain”. She says this is a global problem and that in the Western Cape alone, back ache is the second most common complaint amongst patients. Even though back awareness is a vital part of our wellbeing, Van den Heever admits that, “people tend to brush off back pain quite a lot”. She says that too little is being done to recognise the importance of preventing injury and that the “issue it is still not taken that seriously in South Africa”. Here are some tips Van Heerden gave: ) Maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight if you need to. Having a balanced diet will help with this as well as providing the necessary calcium and vitamin D you need to have strong bones. ) Exercising regularly to help keep your body and back muscles strong. ) Remembering to sit or stand with the correct posture. Avoid slumping or standing with hunched shoulders. When you have to lift something, bend your legs and keep your back straight.
