VWS Jonkershoek held a very successful open day to create awareness.

Kids had a blast fighting fire with volunteer firefighters The Fire & Fynbos Awareness Day, hosted by the Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) at Lievland Wine Estate, was a blast for all those in attendance. The public got to see the boys and girls in yellow displaying what they do best. It was also International Firefighters Day which means there was much to celebrate and the VWS were accompanied by the Stellenbosch Fire Department, BirdDog Aviation, Cape Leopard Trust, Cape Nature, Working on Fire, and Landrover Experience. Underprivileged farm children who are helped by the Anna Foundation took part in the Mellow Yellow trail run as part of their Reading, Running, Righting programme to teach and inspire the children. They loved doing all the activities and becoming fire-

fighters for the day. There were many prizes given out on the day by many generous sponsors. bygesteek, maar toe teen ’n motorfiets gebots.

In dié gemeenskap, net buite Pniel, is dwelms volop én maklik beskikbaar. Bykans 400 huisgesinne is

Koeldrank en tjips is spotgoedkoop by kafees beskikbaar, sê ds.

Join the conversation about King David A very informative public lecture on the archaeological excavations at the “City of David” in Israel will be presented by Prof Martin Klingbeil at Helderberg College, Somerset West this coming Saturday. The talk will take place from 15:30 to 17:00 on 25 May. The findings were so significant and resulted in such a public debate that both CNN and BBC have made documentaries on it, and it

has been featured as a cover article in National Geographic (December 2010). The lecture entitled The Battle over King David – Excavating the Fortress of Elah, will focus on who David was, a poet, a hero, a king, and founder of a dynasty. The story of the young shepherd boy who defeated a giant and became king of Israel is the stuff of legends. But the biblical story of King David is at the heart of

Israel’s history. Without David, there is no founder of Jerusalem, there is no author for the Psalms and no United Monarchy of Israel. Without David, there is no Messiah. Originally from Germany, Prof Klingbeil is no stranger to South Africa, having obtained his DLitt in Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Stellenbosch University in 1995. 10th Wacky Wine promises to be bigger and better Spesiale dienste

The 10th Wacky Wine weekend, with kykNET as the new headline sponsor, will be held in the Robertson Wine Valley from 6 to 9 June 2013. Wacky Wine now draws over 18 600 visitors to the valley annually. The theme this year is “celebration” and promises to be more festive and wacky than any other year. Wacky Wine has also launched a 2013 charity drive for winter. Festival-goers are invited to join the Robertson Wine Valley in supporting their local charities. Blankets and winter clothing, for all ages, can be donated for those less fortunate. In return the valley will reward you with wine, according to the weight of your donation, with a maximum of a six-bottle case of wine which weighs about 9 kg. Donations that weigh less than a bottle of wine will be rewarded with vouchers for wine purchases at the La Verne online wine shop

(www.lavernewines.co.za). All donations can be handed in at the Robertson Wine Valley office, on the corner of Voortrekker and Reitz Streets, Robertson. As part of the ten-year celebration, members of the local community have also been commissioned to produce the ±18 000 Wacky “goodie bags”. This provides much-needed employment for the local community and the opportunity to learn new skills for the future. The Robertson Wine Valley has teamed up with Langeberg Doulos Trust and the bags were produced from recycled cement bags. They can be ordered by sending an email to manager@robertsonwinevalley.co.za. During the four days of the festival 48 wineries will be showcasing their wines and myriad key attractions. Each day will have a signature wine theme catering for all palates. There will be various tastings, delicious food to savour and fun activities such as “meet-the-winemaker”

tastings, brandy tours and tastings, fun wine competitions, river cruises, tractor trips, cheese and olive tastings, a simulated rodeo bull, a mountain bike challenge and a fresh goods market and local performing artists. As part of the Robertson Wine Valley’s commitment to ensure a safe festival, a zero tolerance policy is implemented towards drinking and driving. Visitors are requested to make use of the Buddy Bus or appoint their own designated driver. The cost for the festival is R100 a passport, which is valid for the whole weekend. It includes a tasting glass, free 25 ml wine-tasting samples, and a goodie bag with some great surprises, as well as the programme highlighting some special offers. For further enquiries call 023 626 3167, send an email to manager@robertsonwinevalley.com or visit the website at www.wackywineweekend.com.

Helping graduates shift from campus to corporate Attending graduation and obtaining a degree is the day that all students look forward to. However the euphoria soon wears off when people start asking, “What’s next?”. Knowing that South Africa has a high number of unemployed graduates isn’t a comforting thought either, but online platforms like careerssa.net provide potential and recent graduates with access to numerous tools and resources to help them plan and begin their careers. Depending which statistics are considered, there are between 300 000 (National Skills Development Handbook) and 600 000 (Adcorp Employment Index) unemployed graduates in South Africa. And this high number is not exclusive to South Africa; unemployment at graduate level is in fact a global concern. An analysis of government data conducted for the Associated Press in America found that an estimated 1.5 million, or 53.6%, of bachelor’s degree-holders under the age of 25 in 2011 were unemployed or working in a job that doesn’t require a bachelor’s degree. “Although part of the problem is systemic – there are just not enough jobs out there – there are still things that graduates can do to increase their chances of success.” says Samantha Crous, CRF Institute Regional Director: Africa & Benelux, the organisation behind careerssa.net. “Several graduates are

making mistakes which can be prevented when applying for work.” According to the South African Graduates Development Association (SAGDA) there are various reasons why graduates struggle to secure their first job. Common challenges include a poorly presented resume, a lack of interview handling skills, poor verbal and non-verbal communication and inadequate work exposure and experience. Lindsay Gibson, Marketing Manager at the CRF Institute, agrees with SAGDA’s findings. When visiting campuses around South Africa to distribute careerssa.net and to facilitate free job hunting workshops to graduates, Gibson realised that graduates have a gap in knowledge regarding the working world. “Knowing where to find a job is one thing but the various nuances on how to find one and how to fit into the corporate world can be overwhelming. That’s where we feel careerssa.net can help – we have all the job hunting tools graduates need in one place. From what an employment contract can look like, CV tips and templates, alternatives to corporate jobs and more.” “We want to help all South African graduates shift as painlessly from their reality on campus to the new world of work.” Careerssa.net provides graduates with a four-step cycle, which gives them access

to various tools and resources to help them begin their careers and counter the challenges that prevent several graduates from landing their dream jobs. 1. Know yourself: This section includes a matching tool where graduates can discover which industries and companies suit their personality traits. 2. Make a decision: This tab features the profiles of South Africa’s top graduate employers such as Standard Bank and Accenture, expert articles and video interviews with employers and recent graduates who work at these companies. 3. Getting ready: Here graduates can receive interview tips and advice on how to create their CVs and cover letters. 4. Apply online: This section provides graduates with links to online job vacancies and applications. “Along with our website, graduates can also find us on Facebook and Twitter for career guidance and information,” says Crous. “We live in a digital era and it’s essential that we incorporate social media as one of our modes of communication to help graduates begin their careers.” For some the transition from campus to corporate is smooth but for others it’s an overwhelming adjustment. Visit www.careerssa.net for more information and career guidance.

After the London Olympics the club realised that as a club they stand on the threshold to continue as before or to strive towards something better. They have seen the need to be forward thinking and in novative. To take the club to the next level they need to work towards bridging the gap between just being good and being the best.
