Jeug herdenk 1976

Small businesses under threat SMALL and medium sized businesses are urged to take control of their safety and security and soft being seen as soft targets. This is the view of Auto & General Business Insurance’s spokesperson, Shaun Rademeyer, who says that the most recent police crime statistics as well as Auto & General’s claims figures for the first quarter of this year suggest that robberies at business premises is increasing and remains an ever-present threat for SMEs. “Unfortunately, the rising cost of doing business means that a lot of small businesses don’t prioritise investment in security or insurance protection,” says Rademeyer. In a 2010 survey of SMEs sponsored by the National Youth Development Agency, 50% of decision-makers at established SMEs have sleepless nights about crime. No small wonder, given that 14 667 robberies at business premises were reported to the police in 2010/2011.

In Stellenbosch a number of smaller businesses, especially small shops in Kayamandi, have also been targeted by armed robbers. Cigarettes, cellular airtime and cash are mostly targeted. A number of shopkeepers were injured in these robberies. Earlier this year, the senior researcher at the Institute for Security Technologies, Johan Burger, confirmed that robberies at business premises are on the increase, with most occurring in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal. “Criminals are always on the look out for situations that they can exploit. “Unfortunately, when a business is targeted during the daytime when there are employees or customers on site, there is the associated threat of violence or injury. So, it’s not only about protecting property, equipment and stock but people too,” says Rademeyer. Security interventions such as alarm systems, surveillance camer-

as, security gates and burglar bars, access control to and from the premises, onsite security guards and armed response are among the measures that can be implemented to make a business less vulnerable. Rademeyer adds that employees should also be educated on and observe basic security principles. “It is quite common for criminals to gain entry to an otherwise secure business premises on seemingly innocent or valid pretexts. Employees must be extremely cautious about who they allow into a business premises. “Staff should also avoid leaving valuables such as cellphones and bags at unattended work stations, and if they are the last to leave the premises, they should know to check all access points and ensure that the building is safely locked-up for the night. “Everyone must also be made aware of the contact numbers of the security provider or nearest police station should they need to ever call for help,” concludes Rademeyer.

Delay in chronic medicine services THE Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU) services is in the process of being taken over by a new service provider, UTI. The Western Cape Government of Health would like to let patients, who receive the CDU packets at public health facilities, know of this development and that it might delay services in some areas. There have been challenges at some facilities mostly from the Metropole District. Due to the arrangements which need to be addressed, certain facilities could

experience a delay in the delivery of the CDU packets and increase the time patients have to wait at specific facilities within the area. The Department apologises for the discomfort and have met with the service provider to look at these issues. These challenges will not affect the rest of the province when the service is rolled out later this year as UTI will have its capabilities and systems in place by then. The service is expected to return to normal within the next few weeks.

How to handle your living costs WITH the cost of living going up, we must look how we spend our money and choose what is more important - needs or wants. “It is important to know exactly what you have to pay at the end of each month. This can easily be done by making a list of everything you buy and need to pay, which will give you an understanding of how you need to spend your money,” says Eunice Sibiya, Programme Manager of FNB’s Consumer Education division. “It is very useful to see what your monthly costs are when you do not know how you usually spend your money. This will help you make sure that you do not spend without careful planning and only spend on things which are in the list you made for your spending. Looking at your bank

Om ’n skenking te maak bel Karin of Franklin Adams by 082 362 2628 of 083 396 8119.

statement each month or keeping a diary with all the things that you buy, could help.” In order to better understand your living costs you can group them into four different groups. These are: - Important costs, those you need to pay in order to survive, for example, food, shelter and transport. - Fixed costs that stay the same every month such as school costs, rent, loan repayment, etc. - Carefully chosen costs that you chose to spend money on once you have covered your important and careful costs, such as treating yourself to a new pair of shoes or buying take-aways. - Changing costs which may vary from month to month, such as telephone bills, electricity bills, transport, groceries, etc.

“If you want to bring down your living costs you can look at carefully chosen and changing costs. For example, cut down on the amount of time you spend on your phone and rather send sms’s. This will bring down your phone bill or the amount you spend on airtime and free money that you can spend on other things. Carefully chosen costs like shopping or spending on things which are not in your list of costs that you want but do not need, should also be avoided. If you would like to treat yourself, plan for it and put it into your list of costs.” If you buy an item on credit, make sure you find out how much the cost of buying on credit will be. Remember that you have to add in the interest and insurance if you buy on credit.

Ithemba for the youth SOYISO MALITI JUNE is turning out to be a month filled with festivities for the youngsters of Kayamandi, thanks to the Ithemba Community Development Project (ICDP). The Ithemba project was founded in 2007 by Vuyokazi Dyasi, Pheliswa Mananga and Kwanele Gugushe (chairperson). Gugushe said the aim of the project is to “educate, mobilise and empower the young people of Kayamandi in general about substance abuse”. He bemoaned the influence of alcohol and drugs amongst the Kayamandi youth, saying they’d “noticed how it had been infiltrating the youth”. “We’re looking at helping them shape their futures. We have about 85 young people at our disposal.” Most of the children attend the project after school at the Kayamandi Tourism Corridor. The project is focused on guiding the youth through its sports, drama and cultural programmes. Gugushe also urged volunteers and potential donors to come forward “anytime or day to help the project grow”. “So far we’ve only had a few European students come in as volunteers and helping the

What a feeling! DON’T miss out on the brand new show, What a feeling, showing at GrandWest Casino from 29 June. When John Travolta strutted his stuff in the legendary 1977, Saturday Night Fever, little did he know that he was about to set a precedent, and that it would be the start of a string of dance movies that would affect generations to come. This was the era where the drive-in was king, when you would rent the VHS cassette six months later with the video player machine, where roller-skates were cool and hairdos freaky. Few would deny that the “Golden era of

Dance” music stretched from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. The movie titles of those years speak for themselves: Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Flash Dance, Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Fame and White Nights. So get ready for a trip “Back to the Future” with an evening of reminiscing over those great movies that will stay with us forever. To book your seat for the show What a Feeling, visit www.suninternational.com. The show will take place from 29 June to 18 August at the Roxy Revue Bar, GrandWest Casino. Tickets cost R78 per person. In South Africa ORT SA CAPE is part of ORT SA, which celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2011 and it also forms part of WORLD ORT, one of the largest non-governmental education and training organizations in the world, which celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2010. In line with the World ORT vision, “Educating for Life”, ORT SA CAPE’s objective is contributing to the improvement of the quality of education in South Africa, where possible, using science and technology. Since 2006, as part of the ORT SEED project, they have worked intensively in ten disadvantaged rural schools in three different provinces offering teacher training, classroom-based support, classroom libraries and numerous hours of staff development and school management training. This project created a legacy of its own and supported some remarkable school improvements. In addition, ORT SA CAPE is in its second year of training Stellenbosch grade

R teachers in Life Skills (Science and Technology), Numeracy and Literacy in 2012. A very exciting development in the recent past is the implementation of Robotics as a powerful teaching tool. ORT SA CAPE realised that this tool is used all over the world to spark the interest of young and teenage pupils in Science and Technology. ORT SA CAPE has coached and empowered teams to participate in the annual First Lego league Robotics competition from 2008. A new innovation in 2012 in ten of the ORT SEED schools in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek is the introduction of professional learning communities for the Maths and Language teachers in collaboration with the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town. However, they have also recognised that pupils also need stimulation and learning support and therefore ORT will be offering constructive enrichment after-school programmes, consisting of reading, writing and Maths as well as Robotics, in each of the schools. To make this project sustainable, they require the support and input of local volunteers to participate in these programmes one afternoon per week. These volunteers preferably should have some experience of working with children and they should have their own transport, although some shared transport will be available. Volunteers will receive appropriate training before participating in the programme which will run from July to December (including holidays). Please help ORT to make a difference in the lives of children that have the ability to excel even with all the challenges they face on a day to day basis. Please contact Nomfazi or Lisa at 021 946 2214 or send an e-mail to Nomfazi@ortsa.org.za. For more information, visit the website at www.orttech.org.za.

Azukile Simayile and Siphosenkosi Madolo will participate in the TransAlp Challenge, starting in Germany, next month,

Simayile and Madolo to take on the TransAlp THE winners of the inaugural Exxaro Development Jersey at the 2012 Absa Cape Epic will soon power their way through Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy in the eight-day TransAlp Challenge, which takes place from 14 to 21 July. The two Cape Epic finishers from Kayamandi – Azukile Simayile and Siphosenkosi Madolo from the Exxaro Academy – will also spend some time at the Specialized head office in Munich. The opportunity to participate in the TransAlp was their

prize for winning the Exxaro Jersey at this year’s Epic. Said Azukile Simayile (18): “I’m very excited about my first overseas trip and riding in the TransAlp. It’s a great opportunity for me to be racing in another country and gaining more experience. Exxaro has made of all this possible, and I’m very grateful for this wonderful opportunity they are giving us.” Team mate Siphosenkosi Madolo (21) added: “I’m so busy at the moment as I’m writing exams, but I’m extremely excited about going overseas for the first time. I can’t

wait, and hope the time comes very soon. I trained hard, but perhaps not hard enough. I have to study in between, so I’ve been doing about seven hours on the weekends and at least one to two hours per day of running or mountain biking. I recently also qualified for the SA duathlon championships on 17 June, representing the Western Cape, of which I’m very proud. “I’m hoping to get a good time at the TransAlp – I want to ride fast – and to measure my endurance and fitness levels. This opportunity will definitely help us improve our

“From my heart, I’d really like to thank Exxaro, Songo.info and the Absa Cape Epic for their help in making this dream come true. Hopefully we’ll do them and our community proud.” Simayile’s aspirations for next year are to complete Grade 12 successfully and improve his overall position in the Cape Epic. Madolo wants to complete matric this year and “win the Absa African Leader jersey at the 10th Absa Cape Epic next year”. Said Exxaro CEO Sipho Nkosi,

“Exxaro chose to foster the sport as a catalyst for change by partnering with the Absa Cape Epic. Our goal was to identify talented riders, and screen, train and develop them to become part of the experience of world-class events like the Absa Cape Epic and now the TransAlp. “I’m proud to say that we’re doing exactly that. By sending these two young riders overseas to participate in another world-class event, we hope to harness their talent so that they can eventually become real contenders in events such as the Cape Epic.”
