Don’t help criminals – clean up your car An insurance company is cautioning people not to leave any valuable items, house keys or important documents in their cars, as brazen thieves are increasingly targeting vehicles. The insurer reports that it has seen a slight increase in claims relating to theft out of cars between 2010–2011 and 2011–2012. Items that are typically stolen from vehicles are usually small, easy to hide, and easy to sell. These include laptops, iPads, cellphones, handbags, clothes, sunglasses and shopping bags filled with newlybought items. Jamming vehicle remotes is also becoming more common, but less sophisticated thieves have no qualms about smashing windows to get what they want. Many of these incidents occur while vehicles are parked at shopping centres, and even at hospital and gym parking lots. Robyn Farrell, managing director of 1st for Women Insurance, says the only way to guarantee your valuables won’t be stolen out of your car is to avoid leaving them in it in the first place. Farrell says many car owners make the grave mistake of leaving their house or office keys in their cars, which are also known to be stolen during vehicle break-ins. “Don’t leave in your car any keys or documentation that could lead a criminal to your home, or offer them insight into your identity or
habits,” Farrell cautions. “This includes utility bills and bank statements. It is just asking for trouble.” The insurance company offers the following tips to keep your valuables – not to mention yourself and your family – safe. ) Always make sure that your important possessions are safely locked away in the boot when you are driving. ) Never leave items of interest lying in full view on car seats while driving or when leaving your car parked. ) Park your car in a secure parking lot where there are lots of other vehicles and, ideally, security personnel. ) Keep your car locked at all times – whether driving or leaving it parked. When using a remote, double-check that your car has in fact been successfully locked. ) Empty your car at the end of each day to ensure it doesn’t become cluttered with items. ) Never leave house keys or important papers in your car. ) Don’t leave car registration papers in your car. ) Install an alarm system on your vehicle, as well as window safety film. ) Ensure that you have adequate insurance cover on portable possessions you carry with you on a regular basis. These items can be included under your household insurance policy.

Enkanini wants electricity
ENKANINI RESIDENTS PROTEST: About 60 residents from the Enkanini informal settlement held an illegal protest march in town last week Thursday. The protesters were planning to march to the municipal building in Plein Street to demand electricity. The protesters marched down Bird Street where they were stopped in front of the Eikestad Mall by the police and municipal law enforcement officers. The police only allowed four of the proptesters to approach the municipal building. The rest of the group tried to reach the municipality later by marching down Andringa Street through the mall’s parking lot. There they were, however, stopped by the police again. Hospitaal soek man se familie Die Stellenbosch-hospitaal is op soek na die familie van een van hul pasiënte. Die man, Freek Smith (50) is vermoedelik van Vierkant- of Cloetesdal-plaas, Stellenbosch. Elizabeth Roberts is as naasbestaande in die hospitaalre-

The four Enkanini residents that were allowed entrance to the municipality during the march last week Thursday, met with the council speaker, Cyril Joosteand raised their main concern – the provision of electricity in the settlement - once again. According to the municipal spokesperson, Vernon Bowers, the Stellenbosch Municipality launched an enumerator study in August 2012 already to determine how many households there are in Enkanini and what exactly the scope of their needs is with regards to electricity and basic services. According to Bowers, Enkanini residents will also benefit from the municipality and the Stellenbosch University’s High Tech Shack Project.

SUPPORT SANTA SHOEBOX S’BOSCH: Over the past six weeks 3 162 boxes have been pledged to the 2012 Santa Shoebox Project by the Stellenbosch community. The organisers want to thank those who have pledged shoeboxes, and want to encourage the rest of the community to take part – seeing that 1 547 of the children registered still require donors. The Santa Shoebox Project is a non-profit organisation dedicated to collecting gifts at Christmas time for thousands of poor children. Donors personally choose and fill gift boxes, and decorate and label them with the recipient’s name. The dropoff of boxes in Stellenbosch will take place from today (Tuesday 23 October) to Thursday at the NG Kerk Welgelegen. Please register as a donor online at www.santashoebox.co.za, and do your bit to help bring some Christmas joy to the hearts of young, underprivileged children.

With the end of the year exams around the corner, you may already feel the pressure. “Don’t let the looming exams turn you into a nervous wreck. Take a deep breath and follow these tips to get you through,” says Monique Harrisberg, CEO of The Stress Clinic – an affiliation of The Voice Clinic (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban). Remember cramming, an exam trade mark, is not going to do your brain or nerves any favours. “That’s why it makes sense to start planning for your exams as soon as you receive your exam timetable,” says Dr Judy Jaye, training development manager at The Stress Clinic. Determine the amount of work you have to cover, the time that it may take you to do so and set up a study schedule. Your best bet is to set four weeks aside for studying and two weeks for revision. This will give you ample time to internalise your study material and ask for help with difficult subjects or topics. Divide your study material for each subject into bite-sized chunks and allocate them to specific hours or days on your schedule. Plan your time, draw up a realistic schedule and stick to it. Include some relaxation as it
is not healthy to have your nose in your books all the time. Break up your time with short breaks. Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs. It is not the way to deal with your stress right now. Also try not to drink too much coffee, because the caffeine won’t help you to concentrate. Revise methodically. Simply reading long swathes of text is not going to help you remember facts and figures. Write out important dates, facts or passages, use lots of coloured pens and underline key phrases. Test yourself or get someone to test you on your notes, because regular testing means that you remember facts better and any gaps in your knowledge can be picked up in good time. Stick post its with key facts and phrases around your room. After a while these facts will sink in. Ignore your friends, but not entirely of course. Don’t use them as a benchmark. There is a great source of support available all you have to do is ask. Ask a teacher if you don’t understand a particular topic or there is always your mom and dad or siblings. Remember exercise is a great way to give yourself a break and to max out your concentration span. A 15-minute jog or a brisk walk is all you have to do.

A special winetasting with several acclaimed wine estates was hosted by Stellenbosch Square in aid of Stellenbosch Hospice this past Saturday. The violin and accordion duo “String Along” provided ambient background music while discerning patrons leisurely enjoyed the fruits of the picturesque winelands. The estates participating in the event were Dieu Donne, Longridge, Riebeeck Cellars, Oranjerivier Cellars, Solms Delta, Elgin, Ridgeback, Nitida, D’Aria, Kleine Zalze, Wildekrans, Jonkheer, Backsberg and Vinemark. Patrons each gave a R20 donation to take part in the wine tasting. All the proceeds were given to the hospice. As part of their social responsibility initiative for 2012, Stellenbosch Square shopping centre and its tenants have chosen to adopt Stellenbosch Hospice as their charity of choice. Stellenbosch Hospice is an organisation servicing over 1 000 patients monthly. The vast majority of their patients are seen in the privacy of their homes since they main-
ly live in rural communities and trekking to their closest clinic facility is usually done by foot. The organisation services patients in every corner of Stellenbosch, but sadly a large majority of their patients are still living in extremely poor socio-economic conditions including unemployment, overcrowding, gang warfare, gender violence and malnutrition. In sharp contrast Stellenbosch Hospice also has a beautiful ten bed Butterfly ward situated in Merriman Avenue, offering a twenty fourseven in-ward palliative service and operates at 100% capacity every month for the terminally ill. Stellenbosch Hospice also has a Hospice shop in Borcherd Street where individuals can donate second-hand items – from clothes to furniture to any household items. Stellenbosch Square aims to host many more of these winetastings to benefit Stellenbosch Hospice in future. Visit www.stellenboschsquare.info, send an e-mail to martilize@primelife.co.za or call Martilize on 021 880 2385 for further information.

Giving pupils a business boost Flying Kites, in conjunction with the Stellenbosch Municipality, is launching an innovative project at Kayamandi High School to develop entrepreneurial skills. Focusing on grade 10 pupils, the project will be based on the accredited Entrepreneurs Leadership Programme developed by Flying Kites. “The reality of the world that many of these learners will be entering when they finish school is that there aren’t enough jobs. We need to start developing people’s ability to create jobs,” says Nic Dupper of Flying Kites, who will be running the programme. “The model we are working on is to develop in the pupils the ability to start small businesses at school and in their communities. Once these are successful, we will look to develop a market day concept at the school that will see other pupils and members of the community getting involved and developing more small business ideas and opportunities. “Ideally the school then becomes a hub for the development of entrepreneurship and SMEs [small and medium enterprises] in the community.” Widmark Moses of the Stellenbosch Munici-
pality’s Local Economic Development Department, which has been instrumental in assisting the rollout of the programme, believes the project will go a long way in giving pupils both understanding and practical experience of the potential that entrepreneurship offers, as well as how important it is for the future of many young South Africans. The programme will concentrate on key business behaviours that make up an entrepreneurial mindset, and then develop essential business skills to give the pupils the ability to identify an opportunity and turn it into a real and sustainable business venture. And Victoria Hani, deputy principle of Kayamandi High School, is tremendously excited at the potential the programme holds for the young minds in her care. “We are all very grateful to the generous sponsorship of the JDI group and PSG Asset Management for having the belief and confidence in the youth of our country to create this life-changing opportunity for them,” a spokesperson says. If you’d like any more information on this and other Flying Kites programmes, contact Nic Dupper at 2 nic@flyingkites.co.za.

Court swings foster grant axe NICOLE MCCAIN The South Gauteng High Court ruled in August that orphaned children in the custody of family who have a “legal obligation” to care for them may not be eligible for foster care grants. Because they are considered duty-bound to support the child, guardians such as grandparents and siblings may be dealt a crushing financial blow by the ruling. While the ruling only binds magistrates’ courts in Gauteng, it could be used as a reference by magistrates in the Western Cape. Paula Proudlock of the Children’s Institute at UCT says the ruling should only affect foster parents of orphans, and that foster parents of children who have been removed from their parents due to abuse or neglect, will still be eligible. Shivani Wahab, spokesperson for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in the Western Cape, says caregivers only qualify for foster care grants if a court order gives the child foster status. This is granted when the child has been orphaned or abandoned and has no obvious means of support.
Caregivers can receive a child support grant or a foster care grant, but not both. Proudlock says any primary caregiver can get a child support grant, but foster parents have to be appointed by the court. Wahab says 20 000 foster care grants and 82 000 child support grants have been given out in the province. Proudlock says, nationally, 350 000 orphans live with relatives who receive a foster care grant. The majority of these relatives are grandparents, Proudlock adds. Trix Marais, acting national executive director of Child Welfare SA, declined to comment as the matter is under consideration by the national Department of Social Development. Proudlock says, “The likely effect of the judgment will be that when grandparents have to have their foster care orders reviewed, they will lose their foster child grants. They will then have to rely on the lower child support grant. It will also mean that hundreds of thousands of orphans will no longer be eligible.” Wahab says a child support grant amounts to R280 per month, while a foster child grant brings in more than double, at R770.

Hy is as die SA Meesterskampioen gekroon.
