Caught in the act Selfoondief vas A thief was arrested in Noordwal-Oos when he was caught red-handed in a home in Noordwal-Oos. According to police spokesperson Lt Natalie Martin, the complainant arrived at his home on 15 September at 17:00. Upon entering his father’s room, he saw a thief going through a bag. “When he saw the complainant, the thief let go of the bag and tried to escape through the bathroom. Realising he was trapped, the thief grabbed a chair and tried to hit the complainant. A struggle ensued which was interrupted when the complainant’s father entered the house,” she said. The man has been charged with house robbery and assault.

Help spread the Christmas cheer ALL Stellenbosch residents are invited to take part in this year’s special Santa Shoebox Project. Over 4 000 children from 46 facilities in Stellenbosch and the Winelands have been registered with the project this year. The Santa Shoebox Project is a non-profit organisation that has been working to collect gifts at Christmas time for thousands of underprivileged children since 2006. Parents are encouraged to involve their children in the initiative. In October 2011, children from the Little Oaks Country School in Paradyskloof decorated, packed and proudly dropped off an exceptional 50 boxes to the project. Many of the parents commented on the obvious pride and joy their children had derived from being involved. From choosing the recipient to even selecting the items to be packed in the box, as well as decorating and writing special messages to their Santa Shoebox friends, the project is geared toward teaching children the joy of giving. There is still scope for you, your children and their schools to get involved. With 933 boxes pledged to date, the project organisers appeal to all members of the com-

munity to get involved. Donors personally choose and fill gift boxes and then decorate and label each one with the recipient’s name. Uniquely, the donor knows the name, age, gender and care institution of the child the gift was bought for. Visit the project’s website at www.santashoebox.co.za for step-by-step instructions. The drop-off of completed Stellenbosch boxes will take place from 23 to 25 October at the NG Kerk Welgelegen.

Create a leafy sidewalk and win
ADD beauty and curb appeal to the front of your home with a sidewalk garden and you could stand a chance to win a fantastic garden make-over to the value of R75 000 with Builders Express stores.
The garden make-over will be presented by Tanya Visser, the editor of The Gardener magazine and the Home Channel show of the same name. There are other great prizes up for grabs too. Sidewalk gardens soften the look and feel of your street, benefiting everybody. Sidewalk gardens can also reduce the speeds of traffic, and create a physical and mental barrier between the street and the sidewalk. This can help keep you, your children and your pets safer. These gardens also absorb noise, making it more inviting to walk around your neighbourhood.
Hampers to fill FROM now through the end of November, you have the opportunity to make a difference in your community. The Food Lover’s Market, Living Hope and radio station CCFm, along with local newspapers, are joining hands to bring relief to hungry families. Through Hampers of Hope, nonperishable foods can be donated at the exit points of Food Lover’s Market stores. Living Hope, a non-profit organisation, will distribute the items to those who need them most. Visit your local Food Lover’s Market to make a donation and a difference. To find out more phone Karen on 083 456 9594.

While enjoying a refreshing walk, you can listen to the sounds of birds and insects, which find a natural habitat in these gardens. An added benefit is that the replacement of concrete with trees and plants allows for the absorption of heat that would otherwise be reflected. These open areas also absorb more rainfall, reducing the strain on drainage and sewer systems. How do you stand a chance to win? ) Any Builders Express customer with a valid receipt number is eligible to enter their sidewalk garden. A board at the entrant’s sidewalk garden will show a unique number, and the community will be given the opportunity to vote for their favorite garden via SMS. ) Simply purchase any product from one of the competition sponsors – Mayford, Ryobi, Hozelock, Turf.AG, Gardena, The Gardener or Die Tuinier

Celebrities join Songo.info for Contego Wines2Whales HE Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race has been an avid supporter of Songo.info – a charity focusing on bringing sport to Kayamandi outside Stellenbosch – since the race’s inception in 2009. Each year the organisers of the Contego Wines2Whales provide Songo.info with entries for this much-loved mountain bike event. These coveted entries are utilised as part of Songo.info’s hugely successful “Ride with a Celebrity” campaign. Taking the form of an auction, riders can bid to team up with their favourite celebrities. This year Christoph Sauser, Burry Stander, Oliver Munnik and Dan Hugo were all part of the auction. Sauser, Stander and Munnik already have partners, but due to an injury Hugo needs a new partner. Songo Fipaza, co-founder of Songo.info, says it is a privilege to once again join forces with the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race. “We are very proud to be able to offer this fantastic experience to our ‘Ride with a Celebrity’ VIPs. Not only does this event present us with a great marketing opportunity for Songo.info, but it is also an incredible opportunity to raise significant funds for the organisation while keeping fit and enjoying the outdoors. “To date Contego Wines2Whales has been
one of the key fundraising events for the charity. We would like to thank the Wines2Whales team for making this possible.” Says Christoph Sauser, world marathon champion and fellow co-founder of Songo.info, “It is an honor for us to be an official charity of the Contego Wines2Whales. The event is super well-organised and one of the largest mountain biking events in the Cape. “It presents us with the perfect platform to be recognised and raise funds for the charity while having fun with our charity riders and the public. “Wines2Whales is the perfect combination of friendship, nature and riding. The event organisers know how to package the best trails in the Cape into three days of riding. I really enjoy the trails, but most of all I really like the idea of ending at the sea.” Starting in the Winelands of Somerset West, riders will cross through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, historic roads, mountain passes and nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus. Some 1 100 riders have entered this very popular mountain bike stage-race, which happens over three days – from 16 to 18 November. See www.wines2whales.co.za.
