Plato calls for return of commando system to protect farms CAROL A PUHL-SNYMAN Provincial minister for community safety, Dan Plato, addressed a gathering of farm and neighbourhood watch members in the Stellenbosch area at Skilpadvlei Farm on the Polkadraai Road recently. It was attended by about 60 people from various Stellenbosch and nearby communities, from Kayamandi to Kuils River. The occasion was the annual general meeting of the Polkadraai Farm Watch (PFW), which completed its first year. It is now officially constituted to work together with police to address the rising number of crime incidents on the farms.

“We realised that to prevent crime we have to think wider than just the Polkadraai area,” said PFW chairman Ernie van der Merwe. “That’s why we are reaching out to every community around us.” Willie Joubert, who hosted the meeting on his farm Skilpadvlei, has offered his experience in organising citizen groups on farms for self-protection. Plato agreed, “Safety is everyone’s responsibility, the police cannot do it alone”. He said that we cannot accept the current crime situation in South Africa as normal. “A farm watch is a major deterrent, with about 30% effectiveness.” He suggested bringing back com-

mandos. “The apartheid system is long gone,” he said, “and commandos can lengthen the arm of the police.” Also, he favours bringing back the cadet system, to instil discipline in our youth and give them something beneficial to do. In question time, members brought up several issues including technology, specifically night-vision cameras. His reply was positive. Brigadier Mene of the Stellenbosch police told the group about the setting up of the new national database of known criminals. “It will help our work greatly.” Plato affirmed the work of the PFW and said that the Polkadraai efforts can serve as a model for other organising communities.

Notice of Applications of Fruit Fly Bait 2014-2015 Notice is hereby given that between four and six aerial applications of Fruit Fly Bait, GF-120 (Reg No. L7331, Act 36 of 1947), will take place between October 2014 and April 2015 in the Elgin/Grabouw/Villiersdorp/Vyeboom, Hex River Valley, Ceres, Wolseley, Langkloof, Orange River, Robertson and Franschhoek/Simondium production areas. These applications are part of the Deciduous Fruit Industry’s area wide action regarding the control of fruit flies in the above mentioned areas. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Fruit flies are a phytosanitary pest which leads to millions of rands direct damage every year and can cause trade restrictions to certain export markets. All available methods for control measures are presently being used to fight this pest. Production areas close to residential areas are being hit the hardest by fruit flies because of insufficient control measures in these areas. The control measures that are being used at present may include the following: 1. Monitoring of fruit fly numbers with traps containing either a pheromone or a controlled release vapour attractant system. 2. Sanitation in orchards and vineyards where fruit flies can hatch, hide or find shelter and food to live on. 3. Regularly applying fruit fly bait in orchards and vineyards. 4. Releasing sterile males on a weekly basis. GF-120 Fruit Fly Bait is registered for both ground and aerial applications in South Africa and other countries. All the ingredients are natural and GF-120 is used internationally as a very low risk product, which is organically certified by OMRI. The main ingredients in GF-120 include the following: Plant protein and sugar formulation, with spinosad as the active ingredient. Spinosad is obtained from a fermenting process of Saccharopolyspora spinosa which is a natural ground organism. When this product is used according to the recommendation, only 0.24g of the active ingredient will be spread over a hectare in scattered droplets. If applied as prescribed, there will be minimal risk for animals, human health, birds and any other organisms in the environment, as it will only attract and kill fruit flies. MORE FEATURES: Colour - light brown to brown Moderately sticky Not corrosive or irritating Soluble in water and washes off easily Not prone to staining. Despite above mentioned features of GF120, residents are requested to adhere to the following: 1. All children should be indoors at time of application. 2. Seek shelter at time of application. 3. Do not hang out any washing during this period. 4. Where possible, vehicles should be under roof (if any drops fall on a vehicle one can easily wash it off with water without leaving any stains). GF-120 is certified for use by organic farmers PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT THE TARGET AREA FOR AERIAL BAITING IS NOT TOWN AREAS.

Officials support cancer Stellenbosch Municipality officials and councillors also made their mark for various cancer awareness initiatives. They celebrated National Bandana Day in style and then joined Cansa in placing the focus on breast cancer during the month of October. The Stellenbosch Municipality even draped some of the town’s trees in pink to highlight awareness in support of the Pink Trees for Pauline campaign.

This Stroke Awareness Week the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA is joining forces with the World Stroke Organisation in its global campaign I am woman, stroke affects me to raise awareness about stroke, which is the second biggest killer of women in South Africa. Stroke Awareness Week runs from 28 October to 3 November. ) A stroke is also known as a “brain attack” and can injure the brain like a heart attack can injure the heart. It happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted. When that happens, part of the brain doesn’t get the blood and oxygen it needs, causing damage and results in the person experiencing the symptoms of stroke. “Women are more likely to die when suffering a stroke than men. In fact, every year 4 000 more South African women die because of a stroke than men and our unhealthy lifestyles are largely to blame,” says Dr Vash Mungal-Singh, CEO of the Heart

and Stroke Foundation SA. ) When asked why more South African women are dying of strokes than men, this is what Professor Alan Bryer, head of the Division of Neurology and of the Stroke Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town had to say: “Women share the traditional risk factors for suffering a stroke with men. However, more women than men suffer from migraines with aura, atrial fibrillation, depression, emotional stress, metabolic syndrome and obesity. “These factors increase the risk of a stroke. In addition, there are gender-specific risk factors that can further explain the higher incidence of strokes in women. “These include high blood pressure during pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy and contraceptives. Lastly, smoking interacts with these gender-specific risk factors to make women more susceptible to suffering a stroke.”

Always have a Plan B

When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

In Luke 14, Jesus said: “For which of you intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it lest, after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ ” Sometimes you have a plan of what you would like to do and achieve with your business. But then things just do not work out the way you planned and you end up in a situation, like the one mentioned above and you need to deal with it. Remember: a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. Therefore, it is wise to have a Plan B. We need to have a plan of action for those unplanned crisis situations. There are some ways to steer your business through those white water times. ) Seize the opportunity See the difficult situation as an opportunity for change, an opportunity to be creative. Do not ignore the crisis in the hope that it will disappear. It is unavoidable to have a crisis from time to time, but seize it as an opportunity.

) Act swiftly When something does not go according to plan, the sooner you act the less damage is caused. If you wait too long it can destroy your business or its reputation. ) Collective wisdom When an unplanned event threatens your business, do not withdraw yourself and think you are the only one who can solve it. Discuss it with people working in your organisation, for there is safety in a multitude of counsellors, according to Proverbs 15:22. ) Be willing to sacrifice first Before you can expect others to make sacrifices during difficult times, you as the leader must be willing to do so first. Everybody is looking for guidance and at what the leader will do. Leadership is not determined by how you lead when everything goes well, it is determined when you hit the rough patches. Therefore Plan B is vitally important. V David Malherbe is a business and career consultant and lives in Wellington. Franschhoek and Mbekweni forge soccer bond The under 9 Bridge House school soccer team recently played a historic match against a soccer team from Mbekweni, Paarl which set in motion a drive to kit out the Mbekweni players. The level of soccer and spirits were high despite the fact that most of the Mbekweni boys played with no soccer boots or shared boots, with one boy wearing a left shoe and another boy wearing a right shoe. They also had to hold up their shorts with one hand as most of them were wearing adult-sized shorts and T-shirts. A group of parents from Bridge House decided to do something about this and started a drive

at school to collect secondhand soccer boots. StuartDownieandLeighCourtnagefromPnP Franschhoek decided to sponsor a full soccer kit for each boy. After a month a date was set for a rematch and to hand over the new kit and boots to the Mbekweni boys. There was much joy on both sides (even some tears of joy!) when the Mbekweni boys saw their new soccer outfits and rushed off to put them on and then play with the Bridge House soccer team. Afterwards, over a boerie-roll braai, plans were made to regularly get the Mbekweni and Bridge House boys together to enjoy the love of soccer.

Goal ahead says the boys.

Enter the ACVV Fun Run The first Franschhoek ACVV Fun Run will take place on 8 November. The run is as much a fundraiser as it is a marketing tool for a charity that does stellar work in the valley, but probably receives less exposure than it deserves. In short, the members of the ACVV (Afrikaans Christian Women’s Association) are the valley’s social workers and also manage Franschhoek’s highly-regarded Fleur de Lis home for the aged. The ACVV called in the help of former Springbok runners, Danie and Bev Malan of Sotheby’s Realty Franschhoek, to help organise the event. There will be a 5 km and 10 km walk or run.

Both events will start at the Huguenot Monument. The 10 km starts at 08:00 and the 5 km at 08:30. Entries can be made at the church office, at the Franschhoek Village Market or Sotheby’s. You can also contact Janita Eigelaar 0 072 3376 789 or 2 janitaeigelaar@gmail.com, or Bev Malan at 0 082 901 6966. The entry fee is R50 for the 10 km and R20 for the 5 km. The ACVV Fun Run will also provide a boost to the Franschhoek Athletics Club, which doesn’t currently have any events on the official athletics calendar.
