Hijacking: Useful tips Over 60% of all hijackings takes place close to home. Knowing what to look out for and how to respond is very important. ADT has partnered with the National Hijack Prevention Academy to offer drivers the following advice: ) Always remain vigilant. Research shows that most people relax the closer they get to home and this is often when they are the most vulnerable. ) If you do travel with children in the car, seat the eldest directly behind the driver and the youngest behind the passenger seat. If you are hijacked with them in the vehicle, climb out slowly and move to the back door directly behind the driver’s door. Place one foot in the car as you lean across to retrieve the youngest child; the eldest will likely cling to you and you can get them both out of the car at once.

) If you suspect you are being followed, put your indicator on and slow down at least two to three houses before you reach your home. This could force the vehicle behind you to pass and cause criminals to lose interest. ) If you must stop in your driveway to manually open the gate, always leave the key in the ignition and the motor running unless you have a child in the car. Only then should you take the key with you as you open the gate. The key is a valuable negotiating tool – they want your car and you want your child. ) In traffic, always make sure you can see the back wheels of the car in front of you as this will avoid you being “boxed-in’ and allow enough room to maneuver and escape. ) Don’t fall for the “tap tap” trap where a driver bumps the back of your car in traffic. Lady drivers are often used as decoys. Never get out

at the scene, but rather signal to the other driver to follow you to a busy location. If it is not legitimate, they will seldom do so. In the unfortunate event that you are hijacked, how do you give your car over in a non-threatening manner? “The first and golden rule is to not antagonise the hijackers who are probably more nervous than you are,” advised Rob Dale, Managing Director of ADT Security Western Cape. “You need to show them you are not a threat. Lift up your arms to show you have no weapon and will surrender. Use your left arm to undo your seatbelt and put your car in neutral. Without turning off the car, get out slowly and try to angle your body so that you do not face a firearm headon. Use your arms to protect your head and without making eye-contact, try to take note of what they are wearing and the sound of their voices.”

BIG TREE FOUNDATION GIVES BACK: The Big Tree Foundation sponsored school uniforms to 39 pupils from the PC Petersen Primary School in Kylemore. It took the donors some time to calm the excited children down and find the right sizes in shoes, jerseys and jackets for each of them. Most of the children needed shoes. The donation was made possible by the generosity of Tiaan Strauss and Corné Krige who rode the Absa Cape Epic earlier this year to raise funds for the Big Tree Foundation with its Dress4Success programme. Pep Stores generously gave each of the children a chocolate as well.

Consult your pharmacist on self-care The definition of self-care incorporates people using self-medication and treatments at home, which are based on their own knowledge of how to stay healthy. Self-care also helps to reduce the risk of acquiring chronic non-communicable diseases, such as type II diabetes, thus relieving pressure on the country’s healthcare system. According to Waheed Abdurahman, pharmacist at Clicks, a crucial element of self-care is about knowing when to consult a professional. “When people have a question about a symptom or treatment, including self-care and self-medication, they should always remember that a pharmacist and a clinic sister can be their first port of call.” Some of the most common overthe-counter medicines are remedies for coughs, cold or flu symptoms, indigestion or heartburn as well as allergy and sinus issues.

“Pharmacists are in the best position to counsel patients on their choice of over-the-counter medication, provide instructions for taking medication and caution against adverse reactions, or advising on generic alternatives. The wrong choice or incorrect usage can lead to potentially harmful medicine interactions, side-effects, addictions or could potentially worsen a condition in the long run.” Codeine, for example, is an effective painkiller and cough suppressant but is potentially addictive if misused. To help curb the abuse of medication containing codeine, all major pharmacy retail chains in South Africa have put in place stricter controls on the sale of medication containing codeine, as of 1 June 2013. The stricter controls mean that consumers will soon have to provide their personal details whenever they purchase medicines containing the

drug. Clicks has been implementing the process of capturing customer details in order to adhere to government regulations for dispensation of all scheduled medication. Through their centralised database, Clicks is able to track customer’s medication purchases nationally. It is also important to remember over-the-counter medication often treats symptoms and does not necessarily address the underlying cause. “People should also talk to their pharmacist about what products they need to keep in their medicine cabinet. Give your medicine cabinet a health check by making sure that products are relevant, haven’t expired, or whether you have the basic self-medication products needed to treat minor injuries and illnesses.” For more information on self-care visit www.selfcare247. co.za, call 0860 CLICKS/254 257 or chat to your local Clicks Pharmacist.

Most of the pupils needed new shoes and it took some time trying to find each child a pair that fits.

During the programme, 60 players from the Maties Football Club as well as surrounding community club teams, were given the opportunity to gain valuable football and life skills and to benefit from state of the art assessment equipment. The programme was presented by the Maties Football Club and the University’s Centre for Human Performance Sciences (CHPS) while the indoor facilities of the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS) were used. According to Warren Engelbrecht, sport scientist at SU, the objectives of the programme were to stimulate football development in the Stellenbosch region, expose young players to sport science and technology, and to provide life skills and education development to players. “The programme provided participants with the opportunity to develop as individuals, both on and off the field of play.” The sports science equipment used during the holiday programme included a SAT system, which tracks velocity, acceleration and time for speed tests, a Smartspeed Light System which assesses players’ dribbling ability and facilitates decision-making sessions, as well as a Global Positioning System (GPS) to track the distance covered and intensities achieved by the players. The Maties Football Holiday Programme forms part of the wider SU Football Development Programme, which aims to boost football in the Stellenbosch region. “The SU Football Programme aims to elevate

In doing so, we want to see social progress,” says SU rector and vice-chancellor Prof Russel Botman. “Maties have a proud sporting heritage and we are turning our attention to soccer in a focused way.” One of the aims of the SU Football Programme is to groom the Maties First Football team into a first class team. “I am confident that we are more than capable
