Running for fun in Cape Town Approximately 100 farm children involved with the Anna Foundation in the Winelands were recently taken to Cape Town for the Peace Fun Run, which formed part of the weekend activities leading up to the Cape Town Marathon on Sunday 21 September. With the Greenpoint stadium and majestic Table Mountain as backdrops, it was not only the fun run that was the highlight of the outing but being in the big city and running alongside the ocean which added to the excitement. The Anna Foundation regularly takes the children in their afterschool programmes to local fun runs, but to have the opportunity to travel to Cape Town – now that is something most of us take for granted!

Maintain security Spring has sprung! Not only is the weather warmer but the countdown to summer and the year-end holidays have begun. “After a wet and windy winter, ensuring that the home security system works properly is an important part of home maintenance,” says Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security in the Western Cape. “With the warmer weather on the cards people are likely to leave their homes unattended more frequently to spend time outdoors. It is vital that their property and belongings are protected while they are away.” Dale says that the alarm system and other hardware – such as panic buttons and infra-red detectors – must be tested regularly. “This test is of the utmost importance. If the system is not functioning properly it may mean the alarm activation signal may not reach the security company who will not know that there is an emergency and that assistance is needed. It can be done together with the

security service provider. If anything out of the ordinary is noted, a technician can be dispatched to address the problem.” Over time home security needs can change. Dale says now is also a good time for residents to re-assess their overall security needs. “This can be done during a walk around the property. Questions to ask include ‘Is there a need for additional or motion-sensing lights? How easily can intruders access the property and should outdoor beams be considered?’ Again, a security service provider can offer advice if there is any uncertainty on how to identify security needs.” In conclusion, Dale adds that it is also critical that the security service provider has the most upto-date key-holder contact details. “Residents must ensure that their security provider has the current contact details of their primary and secondary key-holders. In this way, they can be immediately contacted in the event of an incident or alarm activation.”

Land reform under spotlight The Western Cape department of agriculture hosted a land reform summit in Stellenbosch last Monday. Government, the sector and industry experts discussed the best way forward to achieve the land-reform target set by the national development plan. The summit is about finding solutions that will encourage a greater degree of collaboration around land reform and as a consequence, increased uptake of projects. The role players discussed what models can be put in place to boost and increase the success rate of land-reform projects in the Western Cape. Engagement is also to take place on the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, analyse the challenges holding land reform back and to discuss how government can best support these projects.

Get ready for the Fatima Festival early next month The annual Fatima Festival was started by the then large Portuguese community of Stellenbosch in 1987. Since then it has grown into not only one of the major annual events on the Stellenbosch social calendar, but has spread throughout the Western Cape, where it is celebrated at a number of venues around Cape Town. It takes place in early October, one week before another big event, the annual Blessing of the Fishing Fleet ceremonies in Cape Town. This year the Fatima Festival in Stellenbosch will be taking place over the weekend of 18 and 19 October 2014. Though still keeping a strong Portuguese flavour and with (literally) busloads of Por-

tuguese fans coming from other parts of Western Province, the festival in Stellenbosch is no longer confined to the Portuguese and embraces all our communities. Thus, communities in Kayamandi, Cloetesville and Idas Valley have also been doing sterling work to raise funds for the organisation of this year’s Fatima Festival. The festival is organised by St Nicholas’ Catholic Church. The Fatima Festival has a religious grounding and a street parade on the Sunday morning from 11:00, but from then on, and the night before, it is all fun, fun and food – washed down with some beer or wine and dancing for the whole family. Watch this space for more information on the festivities.

Hiring and firing Appointing people to work in your business is one of the more challenging aspects of having your own business. Often one is pressed for time when you need to make an appointment and therefore easily appoint someone who is available and not necessarily the best person for the job. Jim Collins in Good to Great says “Get the right people on the bus and the wrong people off the bus”. So it is wise to consider the advice in Proverbs 26:10: “An employer who hires any fool that comes along is only hurting everybody concerned.” The next important aspect is to get the right people in the right seats. This means that a person’s personality and abilities must match the work that is expected of him/her to do. Tao Tao, co-founder of GetYourGuide.com considers it important to hire for, as he puts it, the “fantastic four”: integrity, motivation, skill and culture fit. Integrity or character is very important when hiring. We usually consider skill or competence as most important, but when we need to fire someone, it is often for flaws in character.

A person whose personality matches the job that he/she has to do is also more motivated than people who do not like what they are doing. So once again the right person in the right job is very important. Every organisation has a unique culture that develops over time, and new appointments that do not fit the culture often lead to disharmony in a previously pleasant working envi-

ronment. On the other hand be careful to not only have staff that always agree 100% on everything. That is called “groupthink” and can be equally harmful to an organisation. Present day labour laws make it difficult to lay off rebellious or unproductive workers. Therefore it of utmost importance for employers to ensure that they make the best possible appointments. Employers should acquaint themselves with the details of the Labour Law in order to act accordingly. Today’s business owner needs the necessary know-how and should have a policy in place for hiring and firing. Without it your business becomes vulnerable. Most South Africans experience bleeding gums on occasion, but when is it a cause for concern? According to Dirna Grobbelaar, oral hygiene advisor for IVOhealth, bleeding gums is never normal. “Unless there has been an accidental injury – such as from brushing too hard or burning your mouth with a hot drink – bleeding gums are an indication that something is not right.” Grobbelaar says gum disease is not the only cause. “The Pill, blood-thinning medication such as Disprin or Warfarin, bleeding disorders, liver disease, mouth ulcers, cancer, hormonal changes during pregnancy, vitamin deficiencies and dental caries, can all cause bleeding gums.” However, gum disease is the most common reason. “When plaque and tartar is left on the teeth, the bacteria present irritate the gums, causing an immune response. The body sends blood to the affected gums which then may bleed when brushing, flossing or even eating.” Fortunately, with proper oral care gum disease is reversible. If left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis, an irreversible condition when the gum, bone and ligaments surrounding the tooth become damaged and can lead to tooth loss. ) To remedy bleeding gums Grobbelaar

recommends a visit to the dentist or oral hygienist as soon as possible to enable them to professionally diagnose the cause and suggest the most effective treatment options. ) Grobbelaar says a meticulous oral hygiene routine is essential to treat gum disease and prevent it from recurring. “Brush correctly at least twice a day to keep teeth as clean as possible. Use a soft brush and don’t be tempted to brush hard – this will just further damage the gums.” ) Cleaning in between the teeth needs to be a daily habit. “If your gums bleed when you floss you have gum disease or you are doing it wrong,” says Grobbelaar. “If you find flossing awkward or uncomfortable look for Sunstar GUM interdental products – there is a huge range of tools from floss brushes, floss handles to tiny Soft-Picks. These days there really is an interdental tool for everyone.” ) Rinsing is important, particularly if you have bleeding or sensitive gums. “Rinse regularly using a lukewarm salt and bicarbonate of soda rinse or Sunstar GUM Paroex treatment mouthrinse which has anti-bacterial properties,” says Grobbelaar. For more oral care advice visit www.facebook.com/ivohealth or ask Dirna Grobbelaar your oral care questions on www.ivohealth.co.za.

Boland College offers practical experience DANEL GILLESPIE Boland College has launched a few new initiatives over the years at their various campuses to ensure that their students obtain the best education and opportunities possible. A recent addition to these initiatives has been the WIL (Work Integrated Learning) department. The launch of this brand new and innovating department has ensured that Boland College is now on the forefront of education in action, as the slogan states. The WIL department had its official launch on 17 September. This was presented in the form of a business breakfast with Stellenbosch campus as the host. What made this event special was that the students from the national diploma hospitality and catering N5 group, with their lecturers and Susan Loubser (programme

manager) all got involved in making the most scrumptious treats and preparing culinary delights for guests. Students got the opportunity to showcase the talent the college has on its campuses. “This was a perfect opportunity to show the industry what our students are capable of”, said Susan. Two students that had been placed through the WIL department also shared their testimonies with the guests. Michelle Davids and Bonisile Kondile both highlighted how, through the WIL initiative, they had been able to gain relevant work experience that will enable them to apply for their national diplomas. “We are excited about our students entering workplaces as WIL candidates and then being offered permanent jobs, even though that is not the main aim of WIL,” said Ms Wendy Adams (vice-principal: innovation and development).

In attendance were Alika Coert (Worcester campus), Thabisa Sipuka (head office), Rochelle Stark (Stellenbosch campus), Melanie Stevens (Caledon campus), Zanele Ntakana (Paarl campus), Lizeka Kosani (head office), Romenia Baxter (programme director, head office), Riaan Hoffman (head office) and Bonisile Kondile (head office).

Bok Sevens honing skills for Gold Coast

The Springbok Women’s Sevens are preparing for the season-opening tournament at the Gold Coast in Australia, which will take place on 11 and 12 October.

The Blitzbokke, with their base in Stellenbosch, started a two week training session at the Markötter indoor training centre, to sharpen their skills before leaving to compete in Australia next month. The Sevens team will face off against local clubs in a series of training matches at Stellenbosch. The Springbok Sevens finished second on the HSBC Sevens World Series standings last season and

completed a good season by winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. “Our motto is to keep on working extremely hard so that we approach each tournament in very good condition,” said Springbok Women’s Sevens coach, Renfred Dazel “We managed to finish the season on a high note in Glasgow, and it will be my job to make sure our feet are planted firmly on the ground and that we don’t get too carried away or too far ahead of ourselves,” Dazel added. An extra incentive for the team this season are the four qualifying places on offer for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Local schools attended the sporting event. Here the Lückhoff High School learners celebrate during half-time.

Hellenic wins U. 15 cup The Under 15 cup concluded on Saturday, 19 September with Hellenic FC beating the Stellenbosch University (SU) High Performance team 1-0. The final, which took place at Lentelus, saw the Milnerton-based club’s Duncan Adonis score the only goal of the match. The match was closely contested with the winning goal being scored in the last 10 minutes of playing time. Meanwhile, the other local team who participated in the tournament, the Stellenbosch Local Football Association, or LFA team, played against Vasco Da Gama FC for the third and fourth place.
