Safeguard your property The school holidays are around the corner. Make sure your property is safe when you go on holiday. The holidays present a prime opportunity for would-be criminals to take advantage when no one is at home. Rob Dale, managing director ADT Security Western Cape, has some tips and advice you can follow to increase the safety of your home: ) The first and most important step is to regularly test your alarm, ensuring that it is in good working order. Let your security company know what your holiday plans are, and how best to get in touch with you in the event of an emergency. ) High walls, electric fencing and other security measures may be practical solutions to secure your property. However, they may hinder emergency access should an incident occur: “In this regard, it is best to consult your security service provider about alternate access options such as lock boxes.” ) Cut back any bushes or trees that may offer easy access over walls

or gates to your property, or provide places for criminals to hide. ) Inform your neighbours and neighbourhood watch of your holiday plans so they can keep an eye on your property. ) When hiring a house-sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly. ) If you don’t have a house-sitter, ask a neighbour or a friend to turn on lights occasionally so that it appears as if someone is around. If this is not possible, consider a time switch for outside lights. ) Double check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home. ) Turn off your geyser and any electrical appliances that need not be switched on so you can save on electricity. If your plans for the holidays include being on the road, it is important to drive safely and be aware of what is happening around you. “Also never leave a handbag or anything valuable in your car.”

Information sought in two cases of rape in S’Bosch The Stellenbosch police are looking for two men, most likely non-South African, after a girl was raped on her way home. According to Lt Nathalie Martin, the police spokesperson, the complainant was on her way home from a local night club on 8 May when the incident occurred. “According to the complainant she left the club after it closed with her cousin and his girlfriend and stopped at McDonald’s to buy food. A friend arrived and offered to give her a lift home. “She walked with him to his car, but realised he was too drunk to drive and she decided to walk instead.” According to Martin a vehicle

stopped next to her close to the Dros in Alexander Street and a man forced her into the car. “One of the men held her head down to have oral sex with him. She could not see where they were heading with her head held down.” According to Lt Martin, when they stopped ,the driver got into the back of the car as well and also had oral sex with her, while the other man sexually assaulted her. They then left her near the town hall and drove away. According to the complainant the two suspects did not speak English and that they are probably Bangladeshi or Pakistani. ) In a another incident which took place on Tuesday, 2 April, between 19:00 and 20:30 in George

Blake Avenue, a 52-year-old woman was raped by five unknown men. The young men are estimated to be between 15 and 20 years old. According to Lt Martin she was walking with a male friend from the Du Toit train station, along George Blake Avenue in the direction of Enkanini. “The boys arrived and dragged her male friend to the side, threatening him with knives. “They then dragged to women into a bushy area near the river where all five of them took turns to rape her.” ) Anyone who can assist the police with these particular investigations can call the investigating officer Const PR Mosia at 082 469 1479 or 021 809 9168/5.

Ubuntu Teen Film Festival is back The 4th annual Ubuntu Teen Film Festival, with the theme “Celebrating The Soul of our Eco-System” will be held at Oude Libertas on Wednesday 19 June. tion, poetry, drumming, sandwich making and film screenings. This will conclude in a live gig event, where all the art forms will be practised together. The formal opening evening events will kick off with an art exhibition at the Oude Libertas Art Gal-

lery at 18:00, where soup and wine will be served. At 19:00, short films produced during the LivingIt twoschools pairings and KwaZulu Natal programme, as well as individual entries, will be screened. Safety first: Precautionary tips for women IT’s a disturbing reality that women are more vulnerable to crime, because many criminals view women as soft targets. ADT Security offered a number of tips to help women stay safe. Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security Western Cape, said the key to safety is always to err on the side of caution. “Tell someone where you are going and the time you expect to return,” Dale advises. “Save to your mobile phone or memorise the details of the person to be contacted in the event of an emergency. “Remember, less is more when it comes to wearing flashy jewellery and carrying cash. “Also, if you are taking a handbag, carry it close to your body and not dangling by the straps.” Dale goes on to warn against the dangers of becoming distracted. “A distracted person is an easy target,” said Dale. “Often women have several things to take care of at once, and it’s vital that they remain alert at all times. “Be aware of people around you when heading towards your vehicle, especial-

ly at places such as shopping centres and petrol stations. Ensure that you take a moment to check the street before pulling into a driveway, be it your own or a friend’s.” If you are driving, Dale said the first thing to do once you are inside your vehicle is ensure that all the doors are locked. “Never drive with a handbag or any other valuable items on a seat or in the view of anyone looking into your vehicle from the outside. “Try and make your car a mobile-free zone, so you can concentrate on your surroundings and keeping you and your family safe.” Of utmost importance is to trust your instincts. “Women have great intuition and should listen to their instincts,” Dale said. “If someone or something makes you feel uneasy, avoid the individual and leave the area.” By following these precautions women can develop highly effective safety habits that will assist them in avoiding dangerous situations. “I encourage women not only to use these tips, but to share them with family and friends.”

Information workshop on depression An information session on a training programme on depression will be held at Helderberg College, Somerset West on Saturday 8 June at 16:00. The programme, entitled “Depression: The way out,” was developed by Dr Neil Nedley of the USA after finding that he was able to adequately help fewer than 20 % of his patients who suffered from depression using traditional methods. Over the next two decades he developed a holistic treatment programme

which enabled him to successfully help up to 90 % of his patients suffering from depression. Depression has been called the illness of our age. This programme is not only for people who suffer from depression, but also for facilitators who would like to assist those suffering from depression. Attendance is free and no bookings needed.

Big names at Aids Awareness concert The Africa Institute for HIV and AIDS Management at the Stellenbosch University (SU) is hosting its annual South African Artists for Aids Awareness concert 2013 on Sunday 9 June. The title of this year’s production is Let’s Beat It and will start at 19:00 in the Artscape Theatre. Ushering in the significant June 16 Youth Day commemoration, this concert will celebrate and honour South African youth for the tremendous contribution and impact they are making in the country. Singer, actor and performer Jimmie Earl Perry directs this concert and will be joined by the Mike Campbell Rhythm Orchestra, Wolfgang Riebe as master of ceremonies, vocal-

ists Amy Campbell, Wendy Alexander, Spha Mdlalose, Manuel Losper, Luciano Swarts, Lana Crowster, dancers from the Waterfront Theatre Company and other artists. Michael Jackson’s hit Beat It is used as a metaphor in this concert to “beat” HIV. According to Perry the words of the song resonated so profoundly with him because it’s about a young man who is living dangerously and told to “beat it” (go away) if he wished to stay alive. Tickets cost R100 for this two-hour concert and may be purchased from Artscape Dial-aSeat at 021 421 7695, Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers outlets, or on line at www.computicket.com.

Vir verdere inligting, kontak Oswin Groenewald by oswing@tenacityinc.co.za of 083 254 8913.

New WP club rugby structure A special meeting of the Western Province Rugby Football Union’s general council approved the amendment of the club rugby structure in the province for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The new structure will see the current format of Super League A and B as well as Premier League A and B replaced with three leagues comprising fifteen teams each. This means that the top-five teams in the 2013 edition of Super League B will gain automatic promotion to the new fifteen-team top-tier league. The leagues – tentatively named Premier League A, B and C – will be contested over 14 rounds, with each team playing seven home and seven away matches throughout the season. Another exciting development will see a play-off system determine the ultimate league champions, as a six-team play-off structure (much like the one employed by Super Rugby) will be used. This will see the top two sides after the round-robin stages automatically qualify for the semi-finals, while positions 3 to 6 will battle it out to determine who will face them. At the other end of the log the bottom two teams will be relegated automatically (to make way for the top-two sides in the division below), while the side finishing third from bottom will have a play-off with the third-placed side from the league below to determine who will play in the league the next season.
