Grondbesetting in Kayamandi

Inwoners van Kayamandi het vroeg Sondagoggend probeer om ’n stuk grond oorkant dié woonbuurt, langs Mt. Simon Estate op die R304, onwettig te beset. Honderde inwoners het “hul plotte” met stokke afgebaken. Die polisie en die Stellenbosch wetstoepassers het die situasie fyn dopgehou. Die R304 was ook vir tydelik vir verkeer gesluit. Hydrate to prevent heat stroke In response to the prediction of very hot weather for the next few weeks, the start of school athletics programmes and with the harvest season in full swing, the Western Cape Government Health is reminding people of the following guidelines to help prevent heat stroke and exhaustion: ) Babies, the elderly and people working or exercising in a hot environment are at particular risk for heat stroke/exhaustion; ) People using chronic medication need to drink extra water during heat waves to ensure that their kidneys are not further stressed. General prevention (All Ages): ) Stay out of the sun if at all possible, if not wear a large hat to protect the head from the sun, use an umbrella to add shade; ) Use a small wet towel or cloth under hats or on shoulders to help keep cool; ) Stay hydrated – in the current temperatures, staying hydrated is most important – drink as much water as you need; and ) Always carry water with you. ) Should you use a chronic medication, such as high blood pressure or diabetes medication remember that becoming dehydrated places extra stress on the kidneys, drink ample clean water; ) Use the rehydration solution if you are thirsty even though you are drinking water; ) Mix the following together in a clean bottle 1F water, 8 teaspoons sugar and ½ a teaspoon of salt. This is safe for all ages to drink especially for those people who work or exercise outdoors, such as children practising athletics and road or farm workers;

) Ensure that the elderly and infirm have easy access to water. Tips for Babies: ) Breastfeed on demand – breast milk is all that babies younger than six months require, you need not give the baby water or tea to ‘cool down’ they only need breast milk, as baby needs it; ) Breastfeeding moms must remember to drink extra water, cold rooibos tea also makes a refreshing and healthy drink; ) Take your baby to the clinic at the first sign of diarrhoea and/or vomiting; ) Keep babies in the shade or indoors; ) Wipe baby down with a clean damp cloth – this will help keep them cool; ) Do not cover babies in a lot of clothing and blankets; light clothing is sufficient. Tips for children: ) Keep babies and children in the shade; ) Avoid sports activities if possible, if sport is essential; ensure that there is a lot of water and rehydration solution available; ) Children must wear hats and sunblock; )Keep children indoors between 11:00 and 16:00. Tips For those working outside: ) This is for sports people, teachers and/or coaches and employers of builders, gardeners and others required to work outside; ) Keep your head covered, place a wet cloth under your hat to help keep cool; ) Make sure that there is lots of cool, clean water to drink ) Take regular, short breaks in the shade ) When taking a break, pour wa-

ter over your head to help the body cool down; Symptoms of heat exhaustion/ stroke: ) Heat stroke can be fatal and should be treated as a medical emergency. Heat exhaustion is a less severe condition but can quickly progress to heat stroke if left untreated. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke occur when the body is unable to lower its temperature to normal levels through the skin or by sweating; ) Dehydration can cause heat stroke because the body is unable to sweat fast enough to dissipate the heat. Signs of heat exhaustion include: ) Nausea or vomiting; ) A pale skin colour; ) Tiredness and weakness; ) Headache; ) Muscle cramps and dizziness; ) If the symptoms are severe or the victim has a heart condition or high blood pressure, seek urgent medical help; ) Give the person the oral rehydration solution described above. Do not add too much salt – the mixture should taste like tears. Sports drinks or commercial oral rehydration solution are also effective. If the symptoms worsen or last longer than an hour, seek urgent medical attention. Remember: ) Children under two years are at high risk of dehydration which can lead rapidly to very dangerous conditions. This is even more dangerous if a child has diarrhoea and/or vomiting. Use the sugar-salt-solution to help them not to dry out while you seek medical attention at your nearest clinic or emergency unit.

Minister Alan Winde with students at the opening of the academic year at the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute.

Winde welcomes agri students Alan Winde, Western Cape minister of economic opportunities, addressed students on Friday at the start of the academic year at Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute in Stellenbosch. This year 235 first-year students enrolled at the institute. Winde told the students they found themselves in this industry at a very exciting time. “In the Western Cape we are focussing on ‘game changing’ industries and projects that will deliver real growth and jobs to our residents. By entering this sector you will play an important role in moving this province forward in the years ahead. “One of our highest priorities is transforming agriculture through our land reform projects. We want to make sure that as many people as possible can benefit from growth in the industry.” He also spoke about the National Development Plan that has set a target to transfer 20% of agricultural

land to previously disadvantaged South Africans by 2030. The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has started with the launching of the District Land Reform Committees. Winde said these committees will be responsible for identifying land reform opportunities in their immediate area. “We will assist these committees with implementation. Already, 60% of this province’s land reform projects are on track. My hope is that by the time you have completed your studies we can point to even more success stories. “We know that for agriculture to remain competitive, we must build on the culture of innovation. This is why we are turning our focus to agri-processing.” According to Winde Agri-processing is already a large contributor to the economy and holds significant growth potential. “It directly contributes R12 billion in gross value added (GVA) and ac-

counts for 79 000 formal jobs in the province. Under a high growth scenario, the sector’s GVA contribution could increase by 126%, to R26 billion in 2019, and it could add a further 100 000 formal jobs over this period. “There is huge pressure on our resources. We will have to find new ways to improve water management and we are looking at developing new infrastructure and water use efficiency programmes. Skills development and R&D are very important priorities. Here we have very exciting things in mind. A concept we will look into is the establishment of specialized agro-processing parks providing R&D, skills development facilities and a suite of world-class infrastructure.” He said in the Western Cape, we are serious about skills development for young people. “We recognise that we need to give you the support you need to create a better future for yourselves to make a valuable contribution to our society and economy.”

What is in a name? What shall I name my new business? Shall I name it after myself, for instance “Joe Soap’s Butchery”, or the town where I live, like “Koekenaap Beauty Parlour” or choose a name that describes what I am doing, for example “Fix-a-Dent Panel beaters” or a name that has some special meaning for myself. One can certainly name some advantages and disadvantages to each of the above, but I believe that to select the best name it is necessary to have a long term perspective. What will happen if Joe Soap’s son or grandson “Andrew” someday succeeds Joe in the business? Or what if Koekenaap Beauty Parlour becomes a runaway success and branches out to other towns? The name Koekenaap Beauty Parlour may sit somewhat uneasy in Rondebosch. Last week I drove behind a vehicle advertising a business with a very descriptive name: “Earthquake Mobile Disco.” The name says it all. your business. “We will rock you!” will go much better with Earthquake Mobile Disco than for example “Music for the moment.” A shorter name also usually works much better than one that is too long. “Flame’s Place” is much easier to market and advertise than “The Flame and Grill Pizzeria and Restaurant.” Although the longer one is a lot more descriptive, the shorter one is just so much easier to use, for instance when you answer the phone. The name is also important for branding purposes. To build a brand usually comes with years of regular advertising and rendering an excellent product or service. Therefore one can also consider whether the name signifies quality or excellence and whether it is short and easy to remember. Add to that the letter type and colours that you will use for branding purposes and you’ll realise that there is more to the name of your business than just putting something on paper. It is important to invest some time considering, selecting and planning the name and branding of your business. V David Malherbe is a businessand career consultant and lives in Wellington.

Are you kissable for V-day? Before puckering up for that Valentine’s Day smooch, take the Kiss-O-Meter challenge and see how your breath scores. Although bad breath affects around 90% of people at some point, most don’t realise that they have a problem. And you can’t rely on your bestie to break the bad news – twothirds of people said they wouldn’t tell a friend that their breath smelt and a third wouldn’t even tell their spouse. Experts say that the most common cause of bad breath is inadequate oral care. “If plaque and food debris are not physically removed – by correctly brushing, flossing and rinsing – they break down in the mouth, releasing bad odours, as well as causing irritation and disease,” says Dirna Grobbelaar, IVO health’s oral hygiene advisor. While most people brush their teeth regularly, flossing is often overlooked; 35% of people admitted they “never” floss. “The mouth is not clean until it’s clean in-between,” says Grobbelaar. “If you are in

doubt, take the test – pull a length of floss between the teeth and smell it!” Grobbelaar suggests that if you find flossing awkward or too time-consuming, find an interdental tool that suits your mouth and lifestyle. “There are many options these days, from tiny interdental brushes and floss handles to high-tech toothpicks with built-in fluoride. Look for Sunstar GUM products in pharmacies and dental practices; they have the widest range of interdental tools in South Africa.” “Brushing correctly twice a day, cleaning the tongue and interdental cleaning is the key to the fresh breath confidence that comes from a super-clean mouth,” says Grobbelaar. To get your ‘kissability’ rating take the Kiss-O-Meter challenge on www.facebook.com/ivohealth. For each person taking the Kiss-O-Meter challenge, Sunstar GUM will donate a toothbrush to The Toothfairies working at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. .

The Momentum Grape MTB Ride is an exciting new addition to the annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival which is presented by Pick n Pay. The ride promises to be a fun cycling outing towards Jonkershoek and back. Most of the 18 km ride takes place on local tar roads with small sections of easy dirt roads and tracks to make sure you do use the knobblies on your tires. Heading out from the Wine Festival venue at Coetzenburg, riders head up Jonkershoek Road past estates like Lanzerac, Starke Condè and Rudera, up to the turnaround point at the Nature Reserve gate before embarking on the return loop via Assegaaibos and the Jonkershoek Road cycle path. The turnaround area is also the highest point on the route so riders can look forward to mostly freewheeling back home. Although this ride is well-known to many Stellenbosch locals, an added feature is that special permission has been obtained from Cape Nature to utilise the more secluded Assegaaibos section to the route, which is not usually accessible. All finishers receive a special commem-

orative medal as well as entry into the wine festival where a lucky draw takes place after the ride. Registration can be done from 06:00 at Coetzenburg sports grounds for the ride that will set off at 07:30. The festival will be held from 30 January to 1 February and visitors will again be able to experience the very best of what this popular wine region has to offer – the best wine, the most delicious food, great music and art and the breathtakingly beautiful natural environment of the Boland. The 2015 festival will offer an innovative family friendly format that for the first time will be held at the Coetzenburg grounds, a beautiful new venue that will serve to enhance this already well-known festival. For entries (R100 online and R130 on the day), visit www.stellenboschwinefestival.co.za or contact Dirtopia at 0 021 884 4752. All entrants to the MTB ride will receive Stellenbosch Wine Festival venue access. An additional cost of R75 is applicable if you wish to partake in the wine tasting experience.

Flieks om jeug te inspireer

MARYKE SWART

Dié kortfilm, Change of life, het gehandel oor ’n bendelid se bekering.

of vir altyd gaan haat.” Weiss flies the Stellenbosch flag at Xterra event Bradley Weiss from Stellenbosch claimed a long overdue victory in the Totalsports Xterra event held at Buffelspoort over the weekend. Weiss claimed the victory in the men’s race completing the 1.5 km swim, 26,5 km mountain bike discipline and 12 km trail run in a lightning fast combined time of 02:35:31, while Nicolette Griffioen secured the women’s title in an impressive combined finishing time of 03:18:35. The third individual athlete to exit the water, it was on the run discipline that Weiss was able to capitalise. “I always struggle to swim at altitude,” said Weiss. “My transition was rusty. I entered the bike discipline behind Conrad Stoltz and Theo Blignaut. Conrad is stronger than me on the bike. So I decided not to overextend myself by trying to keep up. I caught Theo and rode with him for about ten minutes before building a gap. On entering transition two I was two minutes behind Conrad. Building up to the event I’ve done a lot of gym work and felt really strong on my feet. With about 1 km to go on the run, I was now only 20 seconds behind Conrad, he made a wrong turn. I called after him, but he didn’t hear. It’s never a nice way to pass someone. Claiming my very first Xterra victory today was intense, a surreal experience and I couldn’t be happier. My next event is Xterra Philippines, which will be great prep-

aration for Xterra Grabouw”. Antoine van Heerden came in second, while Conrad Stoltz, also from Stellenbosch, finished third. In the women’s race, Griffioen was pleasantly surprised by her victory on the day. “The swim was choppy, I swallowed a lot of water,” laughs Griffioen. “I had a good bike ride. The course included some really nice technical sections. It was hot out on the trail run, with the course featuring a killer climb. I am really surprised to take the win today. The Xterra is a great challenge, but the satisfaction at the end is worth it”. Natia van Heerden came in second, while Sylvia van Tromp finished third. Top trail runner, Thabang Madiba of Team Sterk, was the first team athlete to cross the finish line on the day with a well-deserved combined finishing time of 02:36:56. According to Madiba, he has been dying to partake in the Totalsports Xterra. “Today’s event was challenging. I did a bike ride yesterday for cross training and as a result my legs were very sore today. When your team mate hands over the baton, it’s your responsibility to protect the position or to improve it. The event was world class, really well marked and a lot of fun”. Team Spirit came in second, while Team Tarantula finished third. All finishers received a well-deserved Totalsports Xterra medal, while Xterra Warrior Deon Koegelenberg had a reason to smile as he went home with a brand new Trek Bicycle.

Substitute entries for this year’s Two Oceans Marathon now available Good news for runners who failed to secure an entry into the 2015 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, is that the substitution entry window is open between 23 January and 3 March. The substitution entry process provides runners who can no longer participate, the opportunity to “hand over” their entry to another runner. This is an especially valuable tool for those runners who missed out on entering but still hope to make it to the half marathon or trail run start line. According to Carol Vosloo, general manager of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, substitution en-

tries provide an important logistical function that contributes to athletes’ safety on race day. “Runners withdraw for a number of reasons, but it’s not just a small matter of handing your race number over to a friend. Each runner’s personal profile – which includes important medical and emergency information – is linked to his/her race number, and the substitution process facilitates the linking of a newly-issued number to the new participant.” Vosloo adds that not following the proper substitution procedure could have life-threatening consequences, as emergency personnel

rely on the accuracy of the information linked to an athlete’s race number. “We are responsible for the safety of over 27 000 runners, and urge all athletes to not only follow the proper procedures, but to also take responsibility for the accuracy of their personal, emergency and medical information.” The substitution entry process V The withdrawing runner must log into the online system and click on the “substitute” button. A voucher number will be displayed and an email containing this voucher number will be dispatched. V This voucher number plus your

race number must be forwarded to the new runner who intends to take your entry. V The withdrawing runner ONLY gives up his/her entry. The RaceTec Chip and extra purchases must still be collected by the runner. V The original entry fee is not refundable. V The new runner must take the voucher number, log into the online entry system and click “Substitution”. The withdrawing runner’s original race number must also be captured. V Once the substitution has been validated, the system will prompt

the new runner for personal and medical information (if this hasn’t already been completed). V The cost for a substitution entry is R80. However, other costs may still apply, like the cost of a compulsory RaceTec Chip (if the new runner doesn’t already have one), a temporary licence fee, etc. Substitution entries for the ultra marathon will only become active, once entries for the event fill up. There are currently just over 1 500 entries available. Athletes withdrawing their entries are encouraged to post messages on the event’s social network pages.
