An immunised child has best chance CATCHING UP ON CHILD WELLNESS Western Cape Department of Health will embark on an immunisation catch-up drive during the week of 7 to 13 February. The catch-up is aimed specifically at those children under five years, who, for whatever reason, may have missed any of their immunisations. The department has identified areas where there is a high number of migration, high poverty and other social issues as the focus areas. Health teams will visit these communities and crèches to ensure that all children under the age of five years have had all their immunisations. Only those children whose immunisations are not up to date will receive immunisation. You need not visit the clinic if your child’s immunisations are up to date. Parents who are referred should remember to take their child’s ROAD TO HEALTH booklet (clinic book) along to the clinic with them. If you are unsure as to whether or not your child’s immunisations are up to date, or you do not live in an area that will be visited by the health teams, please ask the nurse to check for you. Newly appointed Western Cape minister of health, Dr. Nomafrench Mbombo, stated: “Our statistics show that up until 14 weeks of age parents routinely bring their babies to their clinic as prescribed for check-ups and immunisations. After this age, we see a marked decrease in clinic attendance, possibly because moms return to work. This means that baby does not receive the vital follow-up immunisations. I want to encourage parents to keep their Road to Health booklet ready or to send it along to your child’s crèche, thus ensuring that the healthcare team can check that your child is up to date. Our children have so many challenges during their
lives, it makes sense to do your best to keep them healthy – all it takes is six visits to your local clinic. An immunised child has the best chance of staying healthy.” Vaccination remains the cheapest, most effective manner in which to prevent the spread of dangerous childhood illnesses such as measles, TB and polio. These vaccinations are offered free of charge at all clinics – all that parents have to do is visit their clinic as advised by the health carer. All children should receive the following vaccines: ) At birth, the healthcare worker will administer polio drops and a TB vaccination before you and your baby leave the maternity ward. ) At six, ten and 14 weeks after birth, parents should take their babies to the clinic for further immunisations. These immunisations are to protect your child against: Measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria (whooping cough), tetanus(lock jaw), hepatitis B and pneumonia. An immunisation to prevent Rota-virus, which is a kind of virus that causes diarrhoea, is administered. ) At nine months, only a measles immunisation. ) At 18 months old. The second measles immunisation is given and polio drops administered. ) At 6 years of age before starting grade 1. This vaccine protects against diphtheria and tetanus, polio drops are administered. By the time your baby is 18 months old, he or she should have received vaccination that protects him/her from 10 dangerous childhood illnesses. Western Cape Department of Health has an agreement with Clicks and Dis-chem pharmacies, whereby parents can take their children to these pharmacies for their vaccinations. There is a minimal administrative fee. Parents can contact their closest Clicks or Dis-Chem.

The Lynedoch railway crossing is due for completion in March this year.
Bridge to open by March
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and the Department of Transport and Public Works are working together to improve transport safety through the Western Cape’s R70,7 million level crossing elimination programme. Infrastructural improvements at various sites in Vlaeberg Road, Stellenbosch are set to make crossing railway lines safer for vehicles, their passengers, pedestrians and other road users. Two farm crossings will also be eliminated by constructing underpasses for the exclusive use of farmers. The level crossing elimination programme is expected to be completed in June. The construction of an overhead bridge at Vlaeberg Road is well under way and will also be completed in June. Motorists will no longer have to wait for trains to pass. Rail commuters will also benefit as there will be fewer places
where trains are required to slow down. The Fransmanskloof level crossing is one of six crossings along the northern corridor to be eliminated. High fences will also be erected along the railway to reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents. The construction of a pedestrian footbridge at Lynedoch Station is expected to be completed in March. This will improve safety and reduce the number of commuters illegally crossing the railway line. The new service road between Vlaeberg and Vlottenburg will be proclaimed as a provincial road after four level crossings along this route have been eliminated. It is expected that the level crossing elimination programme will improve road safety, have a number of tangible benefits for commuters, and enhance the quality of rail transport in the Western Cape.

Load-shedding is here to stay – for now Eskom Western Cape will be implementing new load-shedding schedules from 1 February. The new schedules will follow a four-day rotational pattern. What this means is that over a four day pattern, customers will be shed at different time slots. “Load-shedding should be a fair and equal experience and our new schedules will provide a balance between equity and predictability,” says Alwie Lester, Eskom’s provincial head. Eskom in the Western Cape has taken into account the customer feedback. “We have engaged regularly with different segments of our customer base and as much as we are trying to avoid load shedding, when it is implemented we want to give our customers a better experience. Therefore, rotating the load fairly across all our customers,” Lester explains. The previous load-shedding schedules were from 06:00-22:00 in stage 1 and stage 2. “Our new schedules are designed to accommodate a 24 hour cycle in all three stages.” Eskom Western Cape’s load-shedding schedules will allow customers to experience load-shedding at different times than before. The new schedules provide a more frequent rotation and are to be implemented in accordance with the days of the month following a four day pattern. The schedules are also designed to ensure that, where the City of Cape Town and Eskom have shared networks, the customers will not experience different load-shedding time slots.
Interpreting the new load-shedding schedules: 1. Identify your area block number using the alphabetical list of the Eskom supply areas; 2. Identify the load-shedding stage that has been declared; 3. Look at the day of the month for the relevant stage declared; 4. Find your block number in the time slot that you will be shed in. The new load-shedding schedule and the alphabetical Eskom supply area list will be published once-off in selected community newspapers. Customers are requested to keep these schedules and be prepared in the event of load shedding. Customers can also access the Eskom website or Eskom Western Cape walk-in-centres for the schedules. For more information about load-shedding contact: ) Eskom’s website link for load-shedding schedules: : http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za ) Eskom’s Twitter account: @Eskom_SA ) Eskom’s Facebook page: Eskom Hld SOC Ltd ) Eskom’s contact centre: 08600 37566 Stages of load shedding: ) Stage 1 allows for up to 1000 MW of the national load to be shed. ) Stage 2 allows for up to 2000 MW of the national load to be shed ) Stage 3a allows for up to 3000 MW of the national load to be shed. ) Stage 3b allows for up to 4000 MW of the national load to be shed.

Harvest Festival a feast for children
Sophie Mtata from Eersterivier and Tesswill Claasom from Joostenberg got a ride on the Ken Forrester Vineyards trailer.
Anna Foundation did their bit to help the underprivileged children of Stellenbosch enjoy the Harvest Festival, which took place on 24 January. The Anna Foundation children were clearly visible in their yellow t-shirts and clown wigs, dotted throughout the parade, riding on their farms’ trucks and trailers. There were also a number of children who marched with the Anna Foundation’s minibus. Farms represented include Waterford Estate, Stellenzicht Wines, Neethlingshof Wines, Dornier Wines and Simonsig Wines. The Stellenzicht Wines harvest trailer on which the children travelled, was the fourth in the fleet that had been painted by the Anna foundation children living on the farm.

So byvoorbeeld moet alle kontrakte t.o.v. vaste eiendom skriftelik wees. ’n Mondelinge kontrak is in so ’n geval nie geldig nie. Verlede jaar het iemand met my gepraat oor ’n rekening by ’n meubelwinkel.

Kom deel in Eikendal se gewilde Weintaufe-fees.

Tough choices for Blitzboks’ coach Proteas bowler Simon Harmer is excited by the new rules under which the Varsity Cricket tournament will be played. The week-long tournament, which begins in Potchefstroom today, will see the introduction of a Power Play Plus, an over in which runs will be doubled. There will also be targets erected between the boundary rope and perimeter fence which yield ten runs should a batsman hit them.Harmer believes that these new rules will add excitement to an alreaady bustling format. “The new innovations and rules will spice things up and get the teams to play exciting cricket, which will keep the crowd entertained. It’s good to have new rules which add an extra dimension to the T20 game and will be something that will draw in the crowds,” said Harmer. The Maties cricket team is also participating in the tournament.

Neil Powell, the Springbok Sevens coach, admitted on Tuesday he will have to make some tough choices when announcing his touring party of 12 players for the next two HSBC World Sevens Series tournaments in New Zealand and the United States.
The Wellington Sevens takes place on 6 and 7 February in the New Zealand capital and will be followed by the Las Vegas Sevens a week later, where the South Africans are the defending champions. Despite the absence of Cheslin Kolbe as a result of Vodacom Super Rugby commitments with the DHL Stormers, Powell still has a very strong group of players to choose from. “We are really blessed to have 22 quality players available for selection. The group who played in Dubai and Port Elizabeth performed very well, while those who missed out on selection really showed amazing commitment and desire to get back into the squad,” explains Powell. The SA Sevens coach, who guided his country to their first Sevens gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last season, said he was pleased with the commitment showed at training since the squad assembled in Stellenbosch on 5 January. “We pushed them hard and they responded very well,” said Powell. “We are looking to maintain our momentum and to keep on improving as a squad. Although we are pleased with the tournament wins in Dubai and PE, there is always room for improvement. We conceded far too many penalties in PE, with quite a few in one match at times. So we have worked hard on keeping our focus and being disciplined in the last few weeks,” explains Powell. Last week the squad worked with Springbok breakdown consultant Ri-

Kyle Brown, the regular team captain, was back at training on Tuesday after enjoying a day off following his wedding this past weekend. The 12-man squad will leave for New Zealand next Friday, where they
will face France, Japan and the USA in the pool stages. South Africa is currently enjoying an eight-point lead over Fiji at the top of the World Series table after successive wins in Dubai and PE. The top four teams on the final World Series table will qualify automatically for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
