Online campaign to make Sir Lowry’s Pass safer ANNETTE THERON “I hope this time I can make a change,” says Margie Kemp, who currently lives in the UK and started a petition to make Sir Lowry’s Pass safer for road users. The petition comes after the death of Wynand Cillié (22) following a tragic accident on the N2 at the foot of the Sir Lowry’s Pass on Saturday 29 November – a stretch of road with which all Overberg residents who travel to Somerset West or Cape Town are familiar. At 08:45, a truck crashed into six vehicles stationed at the traffic light intersection after its brakes had apparently failed. It was the second accident of its kind to occur at this intersection in as many years. Kemp says she and her husband had lived in Somerset West and, because she worked in Hermanus at the time, she used the road daily. One day a work colleague received a call. His parents had been in a car accident on Sir Lowry’s Pass. His mom had passed

away and that his dad was in intensive care. “I don’t think I have ever been that shocked and rattled as I knew I was going to have to make the same journey home at the end of that day.” Kemp started writing to local authorities and tried to get the media involved, but had no response. The campaign lost momentum until last week when her sister and brother-in-law, who live and work in Somerset West, posted the picture of Wynand Cillié with an accompanying poem on Facebook. “I was furious because I did not continue with my campaign so many years ago and furious that nothing has ‘till this day been done about this stretch of road; furious because my friends and family that still live in Somerset West, Strand and Hermanus, use this road on a daily basis, and absolutely terrified that I could be the one receiving one of those horrific phone calls in future. So, I started thinking of what I could do.” Kemp started a Facebook page called Petition To Make Sir Lowry’s Pass Safer and had an incredible response. At the time of going to print

yesterday (Monday) the petition had 996 signatures. Her plan is to compile a document stating the current state of affairs and proposals as to what can be done to make the road safer. She also wants to get as many people together for a town meeting where authorities can have the opportunity to explain their actions to the public. A member of the Facebook group has volunteered to set up this meeting. “We are also planning an awareness march as a tribute to Wynand and all the others that have lost their lives.” Sascha Polkey of Grabouw says she added her name to the petition because she is very worried about the safety of drivers on Sir Lowry’s Pass. “A road so many of my family and friends use daily. I have personally driven past a number of horrific fatal accidents, including the one in which a family of three were instantly killed last year. I was very disturbed by it. “I cannot believe that with the number of bad accidents and the large volume of traffic on the pass, that more is not being done to slow people

down.” Some measures residents propose are warning signage, speed-over-distance cameras, raised tar patterns, and flashing warning lights ahead of particularly dangerous segments, an emergency stopping lane and gravel pit. The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works, who is responsible for the stretch of road, said they are investigating safety improvement interventions at the intersection. Brett Herron, the City of Cape Town’s Mayco Member for Transport, said the Western Cape government has indicated that it planned to instruct consulting engineers at a meeting this week to proceed with an investigation into an arrestor bed. When such a vehicle is detected, the signal will remain red for all approaches for a sufficient period to allow the vehicle to pass through the intersection before other traffic is given a green signal to enter,” says Herron. “While this mechanism is useful if a runaway truck is detected at the end of the green phase on the N2, it provides no protection if the truck approaches the intersection during one of the other signal phases – as happened on Saturday.” On Wednesday morning, Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille said the City has “done what it is able to do, while engaging seriously with provincial government and Sanral (theSouth African National Roads Agency Limited) to get them to play their part, and progress had been made, but sadly not enough at the time to prevent the tragedy”. Opedag by KDP Die afgelope Dinsdag en Woensdag is die Kids Development Programme (KDP) se opedag in die klubhuis by Laerskool Overberg aangebied. Hul slagspreuk; “Help kinders die beste wees wat hul kan’’ is aan besoekers en belangstellendes wat die oggend bygewoon het verduidelik. KDP fokus op kinders se totale ontwikkeling sodat hulle intellektueel, sosiaal, fisiek en emosioneel na die beste van hul vermoë sal presteer.

Groenberg Senior Sekondêre Skool se personeel het Huis Silwerjare in Pineview, Grabouw Woensdag 3 Desember om 10:00 besoek in die gees van Kersfees. Ongeveer 81 bejaardes is besiel met skriflesing, gebed, Kersliedere en geskenke. Hierdie jaarlikse instelling is ’n wonderlike geleentheid van vrede en liefde en welwillendheid, aldus AJ Hess, skoolhoof van Groenberg.

Seevlooie, vars stukkie rooiaas en dalk seewier vir ete?

Snaakse weer onlangs gehad, ’n natterige suidooster, maar skynbaar niks buiten die gewone nie. Tog is daar iets nuuts in die lug en baie fynbossoorte, wat slegs binne uiters skraal parameters kan lewe, begin nou vreemde simptome toon. Agter my huisie staan daar verskeie inheemse proteas, veral die baardprotea en die koningprotea. Daar is ook ’n suikerkan of twee, wat deesdae wel knoppe vorm, wat egter nooit tot blom kom nie; iets laat die knoppe so halfpad oopgaan en dan verwelk. Oppervlakkig lyk dit of die warmer, klammer klimaat allerhande nuwe swamme aanmoedig wat dalk die booswigte is. Baie fynbosstruiksoorte begin nou voortydig doodgaan. Ek trek voordeel daaruit, want om ’n ligte braaivuurtjie te maak gebruik ek ’n armvol droë fynhout wat die wonderlikste gegeurde rook oplewer. ’n Snoek wat oor so ’n vuurtjie gerookbraai word is iets besonders. Die suidkus lewer nou mooi kabeljoue op,

noudat die water sterk en troebel is. Ek het lank geglo die lekkerste witvis op aarde is ’n vars stokvis, in die pan gebak. Noudat ek egter kabeljou geproe het, wat die oggend nog in die see was, dan liggies in bruismeel gepaneer en in olyfolie gebak is, moet ek erken stokvis se eerste plek is in die gedrang. Soos die aarde vol mense raak en landbougrond en seekos al skaarser, gaan ons nageslagte se eetgewoontes onvermydelik verander. tussen hoog- en laagwater te oes. ’n Stukkie strand met uitgespoelde seebamboes lewer verstommende hoeveelhede van dié gekonsentreerde proteïen op, wat rou of gaar voorgesit word en glo lekkerder as krewels smaak. Bekeerde soesji-eters kan gerus ook die volgende ietwat gewaagde lekkerny probeer: sny ’n vars stukkie rooiaas in repies en bedien doodgewoon op koue taairys met sojasous en ’n lekseltjie peperwortel. Sit dit aan niksvermoedende eters voor en laat hulle dit eers proe voordat jy dit uitken. ’n Waaghalsige fynproewer het glo eenkeer aan ’n hengelaar gesê: “Jy maak ’n fout om jou aas in die see te gooi, want wat jy ook al vang, dit is nie die helfte so lekker as die tjokka en rooiaas wat jy gebruik nie.” Hier rond is daar ook allerhande soorte eetbare bruin en groen seewier – “seeslaai” – wat afgewas, gedroog en dan liggies in die oond gebak kan word en as ’n geurige, pikante soort “tjip” opgedis kan word.

Jaem McPherson from Caledon delivered another stellar performance and round of golf at the Hexvallei Junior Open held at the De Doorns Golf Course on 23 November. He recorded a 92 gross and 67 net, five strokes better than his handicap, to be placed net winner in Division C. This is his first entry into Division C after winning Division D at the Bredasdorp Junior Open. Jaem’s demeanour suggests he has a great passion for the game of golf, coupled with a natural ability and drive which is second to none. The format of the Boland Junior Open for 2015 has changed, which will see the young golfers compete within their age category, regardless of their handicap, as opposed to cur-
