Caledon groet rugbylegende ANNETTE THERON
Inwoners van Caledon treur oor die dood van rugbylegende Charles Benjamin wat skielik op Saterdag 15 November ná ’n kort siekbed oorlede is. Hy word nie net tot vandag toe onthou vir ’n paar uitstekende wedstryde in die destydse Protea-rugbyspan nie, maar ook vir die jare wat hy in die Caledon-rugbyunie se Progress RFC uitgeblink het. In ’n persverklaring wat verlede week deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Rugbyunie uitgereik is, word van Benjamin se grootste loopbaanhoogtepunte as losskakel uitgelig. Hy is ná sy eerste Proteas-wedstryd vir die SA Rugbyfederasie geidentifiseer as een van die indrukwekkendste spelers op die veld en is in die pers beskryf as ’n jong man wat
weet hoe om op die regte tyd die regte ding met die bal te doen. Vyf jaar later het hy bo spelers soos Errol Tobias en John Stubbs uitgetroon om in die Proteaspan opgeneem te word wat met hul Britse en Nederlandse toer van 1971-72 die eerste span van kleur geword het om oorsee te gaan toer. Ná die toer moes Benjamin egter sy plek aan die jong Tobias afstaan wat later die eerste swart speler geword het om vir die voorheen uitsluitlik wit Springbokke te speel. Op Caledon word hy ook onthou vir die trots waarmee hy sy werk gedoen het, die respek waarmee hy sy vrou behandel het, sy liefde daarvoor om mense se siel uit te trek en, volgens sy broer Arthur, die oorgawe waarmee hy kerk toe gegaan en geesdriftig saamgesing het. Hy was ’n messelaar van beroep en volgens SARU het hierdie loopbaan
Hier is Charles Benjamin in die Progress RFC in 1973 na afloop van die Silwerbeker finaal teen Blue Birds. Benjamin is tweede van regs onder. Sy tweelingbroers Arthur en Ivan het ook in dieselfde span gespeel. Vierde agter van links is Ivan en in die middel heel links is Arthur met Errol Tobias wat langs hom sit.

Ons het luisteraars van Brasilië, Duitsland, China en selfs Japan en Griekeland wat luister en na ons webtuiste kyk. Ons kalender is ’n groot gunsteling – en vir al die nuus in ons kontrei kan jy gerus daar gaan kyk. Dit was met skok en hartseer dat ons vir Koos van der Merwe moes groet. Koos was ’n vriend van almal by die radiostasie en ’n vurige ondersteuner. Hy het gereeld by ons kom inloer en altyd vir ons kom bederf met lekker eetgoed. Koos is baie skielik oorlede, en ons dra ons innige meegevoel oor aan al sy vriende en familie. Dit was hierdie week ’n baie groot voorreg om Donderdagoggend vir Hennie Stander terug te verwelkom. Hennie is elke Donderdag agter die mikrofoon vanaf 10:00 tot 12:00. Hy speel versoeke vir almal en dan bied hy ook ’n “ruil”-program aan. As jy enige iets het wat jy dalk nie meer
gebruik nie, kan jy gerus vir Hennie kontak via ons SMS-lyn, ons Facebook-blad of jy kan die Radio Overberg-kantoor skakel. Pierre Vlok bied elke Vrydag tussen 13:00 en 14:00 By die Plaashek aan. Hierdie program toon ongelooflike groei. Pierre se insette word nou baie gereeld op Landbou Radio ook gebruik. Dan is ons immergewilde Breyani-span ook elke Vrydag en Sondagaand nog steeds ’n treffer. Dinsdae om 11:00 is dit tyd vir Meer as Krummels saam met Daleen van Schalkwyk. Daleen gee ’n boodskap van hoop en liefde – luister gerus om jou dag op te kikker. Ons wil ook van die geleentheid gebruik maak om al die leerders en hulle ouers sterkte toe te wens met die eksamens. Five shacks were burnt to the ground, with no fatalities, and mop-up operations took place..” David Joseph, divisional commander of Caledon Fire Department, said that with the fire season upon us, people must be extra careful when making outside fires for a braai, and make sure they put it out properly after they are done. “The burning of rubbish is also cause for concern as that is the cause of most of the fires.” Warrant Officer Kevin Abrahams from the Bot River Police confirmed that five shacks burnt down. Nobody was injured and the cause of the fire is unknown.
A fire that broke out in the New France informal settlement on Wednesday 19 November at 17:30 razed five shacks to the ground and left the families destitute. Doug Hawkins, a fire reservist from the Caledon Fire Department, received a telephone call from a resident notifying him of the fire. “A little later I also received a call from Pearl Stanfliedt, our local ward councillor, informing me of the fire.” Hawkins said en route to the scene he saw that it was shacks that were alight. “I requested additional help from Caledon and we then proceeded to deal with the situation.” Doug said he had to make a num-

Die alombekende Daniel Pietersen is in sy plek verkies. Die verkiesing is voorafgegaan deur ’n motiveringstoespraak deur kol. Die kolonel het haar dank uitgespreek vir die buurtwag se pogings en hul geloof “as die oë en ore van die SAPD.” Die meeste van die komiteelede van die buurtwag dien ook op die gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum. Pietersen was ’n gewilde keuse en hy het ’n beroep gedoen op die bestuurslede en gemeenskap om hom te ondersteun en om hul samewerking te gee vir ’n veiliger Botrivier.

Geseënd is die vredemakers Matt. 5:9 “Salig is die vredemakers, want hulle sal kinders van God genoem word.” In die hart van ons Hemelse Vader is daar ’n begeerte en verlange dat Sy kinders vredemakers sal wees, veral in ’n tyd soos hierdie waar onrus, ongeduld en liefdeloosheid aan die orde van die dag is. Die wêreld smag na vrede en rus, maar daar is ’n mag waarmee ons rekening moet hou, wat geensins vrede verlang nie. Die Bybel sê ons stryd is nie teen vlees en bloed nie, maar teen die bose geeste. Hierdie geeste werk ongelukkig deur vlees en bloed en daarom is dit belangrik dat ons as kinders van die Here die teenoorgestelde gesindheid handhaaf as dié van ’n onverdraagsame wêreld. Dit verg moed en selfverloëning om met iemand vrede te maak wat jou seergemaak het.

HS Overberg skenk aan Kersfonds Leerders van Hoërskool Overberg het weereens hul harte en beursies oopgemaak en R2 266,50 vir Die Burger se Kersfonds ingesamel.

Outsourcing for small business - one size does not fit all An expression often heard in businesses, especially those facing challenges, is that in order to regain financial health, the enterprise will need to re-focus on its ‘core business’. Many SME owners who find themselves having to cope with a dozen different tasks a day, probably relate to this, grin ruefully and wish that they could afford the luxury of only concentrating on core business functions. The irony, says Ravi Govender, Head of Small Enterprises at Standard Bank, is that small business success is most often linked to remaining focused on delivering the products and services that are core to the business’ sustainability and growth. The key to enabling the people with the skills to place their energies where they are most useful in the company can be achieved by using a little imagination. The example set by the finalists in the recent ‘Think Big - Building Business Champions’ TV series, illustrated that by outsourcing tasks, the scarce skills of permanent staff can be used to maximum effect. “It is unwise to think that outsourcing is a luxury that only bigger companies can afford. Outsourcing is practical. All that is required is to work out the costs of the service. It can then be compared to the cost of your inputs, and the potential loss of productivity that can occur if staff are concentrating on issues that are taking their attention away from their primary areas of responsibility.” “As with most things, outsourcing can only work if the necessary research and planning is undertaken to identify exactly where support is needed, and to find the right supplier,” says Mr Govender. Thinking about outsourcing should involve: • Planning the on-boarding of suppliers in a way that does not require a significant time commitment from you. • Clearly defining the areas that will and will not be outsourced. Strategic company functions should remain with you and full-time, experienced staff. It is important to remember that you only want to outsource activities, and not the management of relationships with your customers. • Checking whether once-off projects can be outsourced to outside suppliers at a reasonable, all-inclusive price. • Reducing the need for technology, as well as the time needed to administer the staff payroll. Traditionally, payroll and HR services are the easiest to outsource to specialists. • Deciding whether you need a full-time bookkeeper or administrator, or whether you can hand over these tasks to someone who is well qualified, but works off-site.

• Keeping an eye on costs, and comparing them to the expense of using staff to accomplish tasks. The moment outsourcing costs equal or exceed ‘in-house’ costs, it is time to reconsider. • Clearly defining the scope of work, deadlines and deliverables on a project. • Deciding the basis for payment. Will payment to suppliers rely on them completing defined milestones, or meeting weekly or monthly deadlines? • Putting everything in writing, so that there can be no disputes regarding charges, delivery or payment. “Although you will be hiring somebody to accomplish a set task, or for a defined period of time, you should take as much care interviewing them as you would when hiring a permanent employee. Check references and, if necessary, visit sites where they have previously worked to inspect the standard of their work. Also take the time to check whether they have the relevant experience in the areas you require help with.” “Lastly, don’t be blinded by price. The best is not always the cheapest. You will benefit by making a careful selection. Ignore quotes that are far below others, as this could indicate, lack of experience, or a supplier who may not be adequately qualified.” “Above all, remember that it is your business’ reputation at stake. Risking your reputation could have far-reaching consequences.
