Vaccination is crucial Since the easing of restrictions by the Government on July 19, things have started to return to normal but with caution being encouraged in many places. While people are making a return to what they enjoyed before the start of the pandemic, Covid-19 is still very much with us and cases continue to be high in Bolton. The vaccination programme is continuing and the best possible protection a person can have against becoming seriously ill or being admitted to hospital with Covid-19 is to be doubly vaccinated.

So, it’s more important than ever that people who are eligible for the vaccine get their first dose as soon as possible, and their second approximately eight weeks later. In particular, we are appealing for young people aged between 18 and 29 to come forward for their vaccination. At the time of going to press, people aged 17 years and 9 months were also invited to get their vaccination. Dr Helen Wall, senior responsible officer for the vaccination programme in Bolton, said: It remains crucial that people continue to take regular tests and to have the Covid-19 vaccination if aged 18 or over. There are still thousands of people in Bolton who haven’t had their first dose

yet and sadly, we have seen more unvaccinated young people being admitted to hospital recently. I can’t stress enough how important it is for everyone who is eligible to get their vaccination as soon as possible. “We appreciate some people might still be hesitant, but all of our sites will happily discuss any concerns they may have about getting the vaccine. People need two doses of the vaccine for the best protection against becoming seriously unwell or being admitted to hospital, so equally I would urge people to make sure they get their second dose.

This is so we can all do our bit to help protect the most vulnerable who are also attending these places for appointments. People are also asked to wear a face covering when visiting their local pharmacy. GP practices are still asking people to contact them first before attending. This could be either via an online form on their website or over the phone. The surgery will assess a patient’s condition and consultations will be carried out either remotely or in person, depending on clinical need. Don’t forget, your NHS is still here for you but please choose the right service.

New online emotional support for parents A new online service aimed at helping parents of children experiencing mental health issues will be available in Bolton from August 1, 2021. Qwell will offer parents and carers aged 26 and over the chance to access digital counselling and emotional support, if they are helping to support with their child’s mental health or if they need direct emotional support for their own mental wellbeing. The service is accessed via the website https://www.qwell.io/ and is an extension of an existing online digital service for children and young people in Bolton, called Kooth. In Bolton, Kooth provides online help and support to people aged between 11 and 25.

Both services are commissioned by Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) as part of its commitment to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people. Via Qwell, parents can access professional support 24/7, anonymously and with no need for a referral. Counselling sessions, including one-on-one sessions with fully trained practitioners, run from midday to 10pm on weekdays and from 6pm to 10pm at weekends. Appointments can be booked in advance or accessed as a drop-in, via instant text-based chats. The website also includes educational, self-help articles, peer-to-peer support via moderated discussion forums and personal tools such as an online journal and interactive goal tracker.

BASIC DIGITAL COURSES ARE FREE FOR EVERYONE! Improve your Digital Skills with Bolton College Community Learning

If you want to get ahead at work or find employment, or even just increase your confidence with technology for personal reasons, these courses are a must! To help you find out what course is right for you, we will support you to complete a short assessment to identify which digital pathway will best meet your needs. From beginners to those with more experience, you’ll soon be using technology confidently and competently, aided by our friendly and knowledgeable tutors. Basic digital courses are FREE for everyone, whilst most courses at a higher level are either free or are offered at reduced fees, depending on your circumstances. In our Community Learning Centres we run a range of basic digital skills courses which can support anyone, even if you don’t know how to switch on a computer or use a mouse! It might also be worth recommending our curriculum to your mum or dad, or other family members, if they’re struggling to use their new iPad or android device. Justicia Who we are and what we do

Justicia was started in 1985 when a group of likeminded people came together with a small but sufficient capital backing from local churches. The enterprise thrived and needed larger premises and after a short term move nearby moved into its present premises in 1988. We sell lots of different Fair Trade food and gifts, from biscuits, chocolate and coffee, to glitter pens, bags and socks. Fair Trade helps people in the developing world to receive an income so that they can afford enough food for their families, have clean water, access to education and health care. Fair Trade goods also have to be produced without damaging the environment, without child labour and by people who have good working conditions. These are all things that we believe should be available to everyone no matter where you are born and so we believe that supporting and promoting Fair Trade is important. We do this by selling Fair Trade in our small shop

on Knowsley Street and by having stalls in schools, colleges, churches, workplaces and at fairs and outside events, when Covid rules allow. Promoting Fair Trade is also really important so we go into schools, colleges and visit other groups to give talks, lessons and take part in assemblies and church services to tell people about Fair Trade. Our volunteers are really important to us. Without them we wouldn’t be able to keep Justicia running. Volunteers work in the shop, in our stockroom and at stalls at outside events. Often people need work experience, to build their confidence, to have something to add to their CV, improve their English or simply they want to give their time generously. There are many reasons why people want to volunteer and we are always happy for people to join us in the work that we do. Stand Up Sisters CIC Stand Up Sisters is a women’s empowerment and arts organisation led by and for women with lived experience of mental health issues, substance misuse and sexual/ domestic violence based in Bolton.

We support women to fulfil their hopes, dreams and ambitions. We do this by supporting vulnerable women to find their creative voices and therefore their voice in society and by raising educational attainment. We hold values of respect despite differences in opinion, shared ownership of decision making within the group, collaboration, innovation and strengths. Alongside this we are working towards raising academic achievements by running creative courses and supporting people to gain qualifications, which will lead to increasing the places and spaces women feel confident and increasing employability. Stand Up Sisters was set up in October 2018. We have worked with over 200 women who tell us that they are growing in confidence and moving closer towards education and employment because of the work we do. Women are going back to study for PHDs, training to become therapists, learning how to set up small businesses as well as feeling more inspired to try vocational college courses. This year we have exhibited a billboard funded by Achieve Salford CVS with work created by women with lived experience of substance misuse and mental health issues. As well as running workshops in stand up comedy, theatrical writing, poetry and art therapy. We are also working towards craft fairs this summer. The Working Well Work and Health Programme

The Working Well Work and Health Programme provides support for unemployed people with health conditions or disabilities. It’s also designed to help those individuals who have been out of work for a long time, or those who need some specialist support. Other alternate criteria for referral are: • Carer or ex-carer • Ex-offenders • The homeless or at risk of homelessness • Ex-HM armed forces personnel and their partners • Care leavers • Refugees • Victims of domestic violence • People experiencing drug and alcohol dependency or previous addiction that is a barrier to work

We’re passionate about giving local people the knowledge and independence to create better lives for themselves and their communities through employment. We work with a range of people throughout Greater Manchester, including health professionals, employment specialists and local community organisations to create a support package to help you find the right job, at the right time.

You can join the Working Well Work and Health Programme by contacting your JCP Work Coach to refer you to the programme or by visiting our website for more information. Once you’ve joined the programme you’ll meet your own dedicated Key Worker and talk through your own circumstances. Your Key Worker will help you address any barriers preventing you from returning to work and will coordinate any support needed for you, from recommending group workshops, to arranging 1-1 support with our qualified health professionals. We can also offer support for other areas such as skills, health, housing, finance, and local government services etc. When you feel ready to move into work, we also provide In-Work support.

Over the past term the Manchester United Foundation and BSCA have been working hard to implement some fantastic new initiatives and create opportunities for the learners at BSCA and the local community as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. Our year group Ambassadors have been planning, preparing and delivering a project regarding Mindfulness.

Football They held a 5-aside football tournament for Year 7 and 8, where participants had to pay to enter, compete against each other and the winning team received a MUFC Medal and merchandise. All of the money raised was then donated to the charity Manchester Mind.

Christian Aid Week

As well as this the year Ambassadors have been working closely with the Christian youth group at the school to raise money for Christian Aid. They held a competition for the most kick ups, charging 50p a go, and the winner received a Manchester United shirt. The winner of the competition over the 4 days did 226 kick ups!

In addition to this, the year ambassadors created mindfulness stones to place around the local community.

They got quotes from the bible, positive and empowering quotes as well as pictures that they painted on the rocks with #BSCA #CARES #MUFC on the back, which they then went and placed around the local community, in parks and walk ways. This was with the aim to help inspire and improve people’s mood when they are out and about.

Donated footballs and gift packs Manchester United in partnership with Adidas kindly donated 48 gift packs of MUFC kit to the school to be handed out to a variety of learners, to help inspire them to continue to come into school during difficult times, and continue the hard work they have been doing.

These boxes are a great way to motivate our learners to focus and engage in their learning alongside giving some of our vulnerable students the opportunity to have quality kit that they otherwise couldn’t afford to have.

I found lockdown pretty quiet, I wasn’t able to go outside, or do anything it was hard and boring. I was worried about getting to and from school, and then if my family became sick I wouldn’t be there to support or help them. I was nervous to come back into the school environment and being in a classroom with lots of people. I received this gift because I was good in class, achieving everything and doing everything I could over lockdown to continue with my studies and help other students. I am excited and surprised that I would receive a gift this generous and big. I am super happy and pleased, thank you! It is the best gift I have been given, even better than my Christmas gift.

With the impact COVID-19 has had on the nation’s health both physically and mentally, the Manchester United Foundation has created and kindly donated 75 footballs and books to support the learners at BSCA and the other partner schools, to bring the conversation of mental health up, but also provide them with the opportunity to use these books to help themselves and others.

Donated MUFC tickets With lockdown restrictions recently being eased 2 lucky learners at Bolton St Catherine’s Academy received tickets to the first game back with fans at Old Trafford with a parent or guardian. These went to Seth and Emmanuel, as these learners are the ones who daily demonstrate the BSCA values and are fantastic role models to the other learners in the school. Here is what they had to say:

Bolton’s Fund Reconnecting people of Bolton as Covid-19 restrictions lifted Bolton’s Fund is an investment programme for the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector in Bolton. It was set up to test new and innovative ways of investing in and valuing our communities. The Fund brings together funding from Bolton Council, NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group, Bolton at Home, Bolton CVS, the GP Federation and Local Business. With the last 18 months being challenging for many people in Bolton, throughout the months of July and August Bolton’s Fund will be focussing on projects that support health and emotional wellbeing and help reconnect individuals and communities. Don’t miss this round’s opportunity to apply for grants of up to £1500 and £5000. Consider the causes or issues that are important to you. Volunteering for something you feel strongly about will create an even stronger sense of achievement and give you lots of drive. We also offer workshops that will help you to get ready for volunteering – offering you training and support. Take a look at our training programmes here and book yourself on a session that suits you. If you can’t find an organisation or a cause that you’re passionate about, why not start a project yourself? We offer advice and support on starting up new groups and organisations and there is lots of funding available for those who see a need and want to start up something new. If you’re not sure where to start, find a group and community activities by taking a look at our map on our webpage or contact us and we will put you in touch with one of our team at Bolton CVS who can help. They will be able to match your interests and talents to the many voluntary groups and organisations in and around Bolton who could benefit from your help, and where you could thrive!
