In our industry, all market players have to make the right decisions in an increasingly complex world. Here, a crucial prerequisite is the ability to reduce complexity down to the essentials and draw the right conclusions from this wealth of data. Customer focus, efficiency and reliability are the three core competencies that we have repeatedly demonstrated over the years as a global technology leader. We have the competence and know-how to guarantee to you, our customers, both efficient and sustainable operations of your products. And our services don’t end with commissioning: we also run these systems and maintain them. This is how we use our expertise to help you minimise the operating costs over the entire lifetime of the vehicles.
transportation systems that also served the city during its highly popular Pan Am Games. Our maintenance expertise and technology leadership also play a key role in the latest pride of Italy – the bright red Frecciarossa 1000 very high speed train. Bombardier Transportation recently delivered the first of fifty of these trains to rail operator Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and signed a tenyear maintenance agreement for the trains – a rewarding partnership for all involved. Let’s continue the dialogue. Lutz Bertling

Bombardier in the Greater Toronto Area The new UP Express service, operating between downtown Union Station and the Pearson International Airport, was launched on 6 June 2015, in time for the start of the Pan Am Games. GO Transit, the GTA’s wellknown commuter rail service, is also fully operated and maintained by Bombardier, with the original maintenance contract in place since 1998. As well as providing maintenance and operations, a key aspect of Bombardier’s involvement with both UP Express and GO Transit is to provide Guest Service Representatives (GSRs) on the former, and Customer Service Ambassadors (CSAs) on the latter. “On UP Express, the role of Bombardier GSRs is to perform all the front-line customer service activities such as ticketing, station platform guidance and passenger assistance, as well as concierge services such as wayfinding, providing special event information, and even recVestibulum id ligula ommending dining and sightseeing options,” porta felis euismod said Bill Brunet, Bombardier Transportation’s semper. he extent of Bombardier’s involvement in passenger operations may surprise anyone who thinks of it only as a train builder. But involving the train manufacturer beyond initial product introduction makes good business sense. Across all transportation sectors there is always a clear demand for improving safety, availability and reliability as well as a need to drive significant reductions in whole life asset costs and enhance customer service. Optimising the performance of a highly complex asset with a useful life approaching half a century clearly doesn’t begin and end during the design and introduction phase. No one knows every aspect of a product’s construction, use and operation like the manufacturer, but it’s a true understanding of the client and ridership environment that allows Bombardier to excel in operations. Bombardier uses its extensive presence in design, build, operation and whole life maintenance solutions contracts to collect intelligent product data that drives innovation and continuous product improvement. In the UK, for example, Bombardier has managed the service contract for Virgin Trains and Arriva Cross Country at the Central Rivers facility in Barton under Needwood since the Voyager fleet was designed. The on-site project team continually monitors fleet performance and uses product know-how to proactively manage the fleet. This knowledge is used to reduce operating costs, allowing Bombardier to invest in improvements to the existing fleet.

o how does Bombardier deliver fleet management services successfully to customers? It’s achieved through the Bombardier Fleet Management System (BFMS) – a suite of operations and maintenance integrated tools, processes and global experience to supply end-to-end solutions for the service delivery teams. Such joined-up processes and tools are vital to a successful operation. The most recent ground-breaking example of this is Bombardier’s Automatic Visual Inspection System (AVI System). It was originally deployed on the Gautrain project in South Africa and is now rolling out on projects worldwide. The AVI System uses the award-winning BOMBARDIER ORBITA decision-making engine to link product data acquisition tools to maintenance work orders to dramatically improve the quality of product condition data. The AVI System was approved for operation on the Voyager fleet in the UK during January 2015, becoming the first passenger operation in the world with a fully automated inspection of brake pads with no human intervention. The associated reduction in vehicle downtime and improvements in inspection frequency radically affect the usable life of the brake-pad material. These improvements reduce operat-
S
ing costs and environmental impact, allowing Bombardier service teams to concentrate their experience on improving fleet performance. Peace-of-mind maintenance Combining the investment in new rolling stock with the outsourcing of the fleet maintenance to the vehicles’ manufacturer makes business sense. The customer can focus on operating the fleet, providing comfort and safety to passengers, while the manufacturer ensures the highest levels of availability and reliability. Bombardier’s experience in providing fleet maintenance to its customers worldwide, together with knowledge of their existing business models and infrastructure, mean it can offer tailored solutions that can easily be integrated in the customers’ existing maintenance setup.
“This isn’t just about producing lots of data, the key is how you use that data in an intelligent way to get the best value for our customers.”

ne of Bombardier’s latest innovations in the Services field is FlexCare. With this integrated maintenance management model, Bombardier takes over full responsibility for the fleet maintenance, starting with the creation of a fleet-specific maintenance plan for the contract period. Based on that, detailed material demand planning is performed to ensure it has the right amount of high quality material at the right time and place to perform the maintenance work. The operator’s maintenance personnel perform maintenance work in its own depots according to Bombardier’s maintenance plan. “FlexCare guarantees the customer the best possible maintenance of its fleet and a clear and transparent forecast of the maintenance costs, which gives the customer budget certainty for

the contract period,” said Michael Fohrer, Vice President, Services Execution, Region Central/Eastern Europe and CIS, Bombardier Transportation. Customer Linz AG Linien in Austria signed up for a 16-year FlexCare maintenance contract to add to an order of 23 Flexity Outlook trams in 2009. The tram operators of Innsbruck and Vienna followed 2012 and 2015. “The advantage for us is that the maintenance price is fixed for the next 24 years, aside from price escalation and inflation rate. That means, we have agreed on fixed prices for the different maintenance works and, for example, we already know what a wheel exchange will cost 24 years from now,” said Günter Steinbauer, CEO of Wiener Linien, Vienna’s transport authority. Gold standard Customers are buying into unique solutions, like FlexCare, with Bombardier, which are adaptable and continually evolving. Combining flexible solutions with global experience in delivery through Bombardier’s fleet management, these innovative maintenance management systems help guarantee high availability, both in terms of spare parts and of rolling stock, and reliability for vehicles. They can be easily integrated into customers’ existing processes and procedures and tailored to meet their needs. “Our approach is to listen to our customers, understand their issues and pair those with complementary services to meet their specific needs. It’s the combination of requirements that is unique to them and so it must be with the fleet management package,” said Matthew Byrne, Vice President Service Execution, Bombardier. That’s why Bombardier is the gold standard when it comes to 100% responsibility for fleet maintenance or operational services.

Customer focus Detailed knowledge of a transport company is crucial to develop an appropriate solution. At Bombardier Transportation, customers find competent contacts at all levels who know all about them and their local situation. Moreover Bombardier now assigns every customer an executive sponsor, where all information is collated. This service-oriented form of organisation ensures that synergies are exploited, that all information is passed on as rapidly as possible and that customer requirements are implemented efficiently. How well such service-oriented cooperation between rail operators and Bombardier works can be seen in London where the British company Transport for London (LOTrain), joining forces with Bombardier, is mastering a complex challenge very quickly and efficiently. Keeping distances short and establishing clear lines of communication between the experts on both sides are the key factors in quickly and successfully making the new BOMBARDIER AVENTRA product platform a reality.
The secret to success is to concentrate on the essentials: customer focus, efficiency and reliability.

to customers all over the world. Furthermore customers can draw on a wealth of experience that the company has gained as a global technology leader in decades. Combining physical presence and broad expertise brings significant benefits along the entire value chain, from central product development to commissioning and also maintenance. No other system provider is better positioned to integrate the different competencies than Bombardier Transportation. These benefits are enjoyed, above all, by our customers. OneBT has now further optimized the combination of regional presence and globally networked expertise. Even shorter lines of communication and clearer interfaces at all levels of cooperation ensure organisational efficiency and minimize the use of resources on both sides, allowing them to flow instead into the development of innovative products and system solutions.

Today what is more important than ever before is to establish partnerships that are profitable in the long term and that facilitate dependable products at attractive prices. The basis for such win-win partnerships is provided by modular and standardized product platforms. The platform systems from Bombardier Transportation ideally interlink efficiency, flexibility and reliability: dependability and availability can thus be further improved, maintenance cycles optimized and costs reduced over the entire product life cycle. nn Enhanced reliability, high innovative strength With regard to the platform products from Bombardier Transportation, customers can choose – as in the automotive industry – from a large catalogue of tried and tested modules which are subject to ongoing optimisation on the basis of extensive research and development. nn Flexibility in configuration and design Customers can put together ‘their’ own product from a wide range of options, especially in terms of the emotionalising factors such as design, which are of great importance for branding, and in terms of configuration.

Successful platforms Customer focus, efficiency and reliability – these strengths of Bombardier’s have been implemented convincingly in the development of the Bombardier FLEXITY, AVENTRA and TRAXX product platforms. The products’ technical performance and economic benefits have been further optimized – a persuasive argument for customers, who are also free to decide in many other areas such as design or interior furnishings. The AVENTRA Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) builds on the successful BOMBARDIER ELECTROSTAR platform to offer best-in-class commuter train performance. The new AVENTRA EMU for the UK incorporates feedback and experience from decades in the UK rolling stock market and epitomizes LCC best practice, combining light-weight vehicle design, optimized maintainability and smart energy control to minimize costs and maximize fleet availability. The AVENTRA train is lighter than its predecessor models and weighs between 30 and 35 tons. A train can carry up to 1,500 passengers and features so-called pocket doors on both sides that open and close faster than conventional doors.

And indeed, soon after putting the high-comfort, high-tech train – known as Frecciarossa 1000 in Italy – in service in June this year, it has become a giant hit with the public. This should come as no surprise, as the train features a high level of comfort alongside a reputation for punctuality, safety and reliability, while travelling at unrivalled speed – more than befitting the name ‘Red Arrow’. This cluster of favourable points is not least due to the fact that Bombardier Transportation not only manufactures the 50 trains ordered but is also responsible for their comprehensive maintenance in partnership with AnsaldoBreda.

MOVE | Interview Public transport is an important topic in congested Asian cities. Singapore, for example, has a close-knit and relatively inexpensive public transport system. On average, 2.9 million passengers used rail-based public transport every day in 2014.
“MASS TRANSPORTATION serves THE COLLECTIVE INTEREST.” Chandran Nair, CEO of the Global Institute For Tomorrow

MOVE | Interview
Mr. Nair, do you consider yourself a futurologist? ChandraN Nair: No. For me, the word futurologist typically describes someone from the West, suggesting that technical solutions (gadgets) will save the world. Our world in Asia is different, and so I do not agree with the futurologist view.
According to the UN, 75% of the world’s population will live in big cities in 2050. Do you think urbanisation will change societies profoundly? ChandraN Nair: The belief is that cities are creators of prosperity and therefore the key to modernity. But look at what has happened in Asia. Most cities are extremely polluted, having adopted this urbanisation myth as a path to prosperity. Many people who migrate to big cities for work end up in unlivable slums because,
with the kind of jobs they find, they cannot afford proper dwellings. We need to offer decently paid work and provide proper education, health and infrastructure. We need smaller, workable and more livable cities. Why should we make large cities that are already a mess even larger and messier?
provide affordable mobility for all citizens? ChandraN Nair: Public transportation is essential. But cities in Asia have underpriced mobility so far and subsidized private transportation. The real costs of private transportation need to be reflected in policies, e.g. taxes on it should rise so that public transportation could be supported instead and the private car made a luxury item. Mass transportation serves the collective interest. It leads to high productivity. I live in Hong Kong; I don’t have a car and I don’t need one. The metro system in Hong Kong is one of the world’s best. I can make 6 appointments in different areas of the city in one day and will never be late. I couldn’t do that in other Asian cities today.
Will those 25% who will remain living in rural areas be “left behind”? ChandraN Nair: I don’t say that we should reverse urbanisation but it needs to slow down. We should stop emptying the countryside, strengthen villages and rural development, and appreciate the economic value of the countryside.
Mobility is already a key topic in megacities worldwide today and will be even more in the future. What could/should be done to
of the world’s population will live in the countryside in 2050, says the UN. We should appreciate its economic value, says Chandran Nair.
Chandran Nair is the founder and CEO of the Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT), an independent panAsian think tank. He frequently speaks at major global gatherings such as the World Economic Forum in Davos and APEC where his thought leadership is sought for its fresh insights and intellectual honesty. He also advises Asian governments and large economic corporations around the globe. global-inst.com theotherhundred.com
Where do you see the main challenges for communities/ countries to provide mobility/public transportation in the future? ChandraN Nair: Many Asian cities are late in planning for public transportation and can’t afford an extensive and high quality transport system like in Hong Kong in the near future. Also, space in cities is limited, which often confines the realisation of public transportation. Cities need to start planning for a future where mass transportation is the only option for the majority.

pain’s high speed network is considered to be one of the best worldwide. Currently, it comprises four main high speed corridors and has a total length of 2,321 kilometres, making it the largest high speed network in Europe and secondlargest worldwide. Further lines are already under construction or planned. The priority of expanding the high speed network has, once again, been confirmed by the Minister of Public Works this year by announcing to contract the supply of 40 new high speed trains, plus 35 years of maintenance, which will mean an investment of around 3 billion euros.
Bombardier has been present in the rail signalling business in Spain for over 90 years. Today its site near Madrid is a Centre of Excellence for CBTC rail control engineering and product development, sales, project management and customer services. It has a long history of delivering technology for both the national and metro rail systems in Spain. The site has grown to support a multi-national team delivering projects not only in Spain but also in North Africa and Latin America.
Transportation in Spain is also marked by a high degree of integration between its long distance railway services and innercity metro systems. Most major cities already have good metro or tram networks. Some are expanding their systems and services while other cities are doing feasibility studies to develop new rail systems or to use wireless and fast-charging e-mobility solutions like BOMBARDIER PRIMOVE.

shaped to perfection Digital technologies are revolutionising many industries. Bombardier, too, is taking advantage of virtual reality to launch its vehicles on the market more quickly and to accelerate product development.

Virtual manu足 facturing uses simulated manufacturing processes and computer models. Before it existed, design technology was focused more on the concept. Now, virtual manufacturing allows designers to create a 3-D model of a product and to also virtually test the efficiency of its performance.

o matter whether it’s an industrial plant, an airplane or a train: it is only when all components work together perfectly that the whole system is able to run smoothly. The sooner errors are detected, the better – a fact that also applies to prototypes. Today, the production of expensive advance models can be greatly improved by using virtual test runs. “This way, development and installation steps can be accelerated, optimized or done

away with entirely,” explains Helmut Dietz, Head of Digital Manufacturing at Bombardier Transportation. Together with his team, Dietz defines, drives and supports the implementation of the Bombardier Digital
Mockup for manufacturing directive. He ensures product quality meets customer needs by developing the standardized methodology and tools across the global organization. The collected data flows from the CATIA V5 design system via a product lifecycle management system into a virtual reality solution from the ESI Group that goes by the name of IC.IDO. “In the end, we can view the developed vehicle on high resolution ‘powerwalls’ – and even touch it,” says Dietz. levels, to make considerably more precise and quicker decisions in joint reviews in real time and in different locations around the globe. Touch the vehicle virtually Virtual hands make it possible to interact with the virtual and the real product, in an environment known as “mixed reality”, e.g., to assemble windows in the car body, and to check cabling and tubing, while ergonomic issues can be investigated using virtual human mod-
els. Virtual reality fully supports the “Run@Rate” manufacturing approach, which means no learning curve starting from the first vehicle’s series build. Vehicle production can likewise benefit from this approach: working with virtual welding guns, it can be checked whether cut surfaces are easily accessible for employees. “Humans are integrated in real time and can therefore interact,” says Dietz. Looking ahead, he wants to establish virtual reality on a global scale and, as a result,
Virtual Reality is a computer-generated environment that gives the illusion of being immersed in a real system. It needs tools like a remote tracking device and 3-D glasses.

save up to 70 percent on prototypes – a welcome cash benefit for Bombardier and its clients. Five installations of this kind already form part of the Group worldwide. “In addition, we can visualize the simulation results of heat, cold, air currents and material deformations, as well as space requirements for passengers,” says Dietz. Accordingly, any modifications require only a few bits and bytes to be rearranged, as opposed to million-dollar parts, making both the assembly process and the final product less prone to errors.

30 km/h The German railway network is almost three times as long as all German motorways put together.
When the railway was first invented, scientists believed that speeds of over 30 km/h would lead to softening of the brain.
Did you know? An EU directive specifies the maximum speed of escalators: in metro systems 2.34 kilometres per hour are allowed, and in airports the maximum speed is limited to 2.7 kilometres per hour. For all other escalators the top speed limit is 1.8 kilometres per hour.
Passengers who faint because of dieting (and the related lack of food intake) are the third common reason for delays of the New York City Subway. The public transport system in the Big Apple recorded around 395 delays each month due to this.
In Berlin, you are never more than 500 metres away from a public transport stop.
In Mexico, passengers get a free ride with the metro or the bus if they can do ten squats at a station. There are 30 such “health stations” at metro entrances where they have the opportunity to do this. A device counts the squats and gives the traveller additional useful information for his/her health. Furthermore, the traveller is provided with a free pedometer. 35
