PRESIDENT’S FORWARD Mr. John McCormack

Members, it is with pride that I write to you as President of the Canterbury Bankstown Referees’ Association for season 2010. It seems that it was only yesterday when we started the season with anticipation and expectation with our many goals both on and off the field. For me, I was anxious to make certain that the Association enjoyed a successful season by ensuring that the active members were given opportunities to develop their skills as a referee and to rise through the ranks, to allow referees to build on their experience for their future goals of Graded football , to ensure the safety of our members at grounds, to build on the relationship we have with the Junior League with the new combined competition in the senior grades with teams from South Sydney, Balmain and St. George districts, to encourage greater participation in our social activities held throughout the season, to ensure a smooth transition from the previous committee to the new committee upon the retirement of Paul Archer as President after many years of service and to focus on giving our sponsors value for their hard earned sponsorship funds. We were successful in many areas though we need to continue our focus in other areas year after year. I acknowledge and congratulate the on-field achievements for 2010 with Reg Marks taking out the Association’s highest honour of achieving the Clubb-Johnson trophy for the second year in a row. This award goes to the referee who officiates in the highest grade grand final held in the district. Congratulations also to Nathan Loveday for being awarded the Farrelly–Dick trophy by the Directors of Referees for most improved referee. Our Graded members also represented themselves and the Association with pride throughout the season. David Abood was appointed to the finals of the NRL, while Adam Gee was appointed to the semi final of the NSW Cup competition. Jim Oliveira was appointed to the Grand Final of the Bundaberg Cup. Matt Damaso was appointed to the Final of the NSW Cup and Richard Daizli was again appointed to the Toyota Cup Grand Final. Richard has shown consistency and tenacity in his performances by being appointed to grand final appearances each year since being graded in 2005. This is a significant achievement for any referee. Off the field I would like to congratulate George Elias for receiving the Leo Randle award for his continued achievements both on and off the field. After 33 years of service George took on the demanding role of Director of Referees in 2010 and continued to referee the kids on Saturdays. George is a highly regarded 3

member of the Association and a valuable asset with his hard work and dedication. Also, on a special note, one of our own was recognized by the wider rugby league community for his volunteer services to the Game. Glenn Jeffcoat was awarded the AAMI Service to Refereeing Award for his commitment to refereeing over many years. Glenn beat other finalists including David Manson, Brisbane RLFA and Anthony Fletcher, Group 9 RAO, CRL. We again conducted the exchange program where Reg Marks and Joe Attard represented the Association in Perth and Nathan Loveday and Dave Turvey travelled north to the Sunshine Coast. The program is important to the development of our members and provides a different perspective to refereeing day in and day out within the district. Reg gave an enlightened overview of their activities whilst in Perth and it would appear that the off field activities were more memorable than the real purpose of the trip… The Association can only be as successful as the members who contribute to its success. We have been very fortunate for many years to rely upon members who have donated their time and inspiration to the Committee and other roles. The times, they are a changing and a few of these members have decided to not seek reelection for varying reasons. Chris Cafarelli has taken up employment in Europe in 2011 and I would like to wish him well during his time away from us and thank him for his assistance as Vice President as well as being our Training Coordinator. Chris worked hard to make training entertaining and varied and I’m sure that the members who participated were fitter and better for the experience. Warren Gee will be spending more time on the Central Coast and after 6 years as Assistant Secretary will not be seeking re-election. Warren has been a great asset to the Committee in keeping the minutes, managing the best and fairest awards and providing ideas. Finally, as many of you will know Mario Cafarelli will not be seeking re-election to the role of Secretary, a role that he has held for the past 6 years and has held positions on the Committee for a further 3 years. Mario has shown enthusiasm and diligence in conducting the duties in this demanding role. The Association has enjoyed a smooth running for many years and this is in no small part due to the efforts of Mario. I wish him well and look forward to having Mario being a contributor to the Association in the years ahead. My thanks also to Brad Zarb for his contribution in keeping the books of the Association and to Gavin Beecroft and his partner Rachel who both work very hard in ensuring that all our social events were well prepared and enjoyable for all the guests. There are also a number of other members who have contributed to the Association in all facets of its functioning to allow the members to develop and grow and achieve their goals. I would like to specifically acknowledge and thank the following - George Elias, Kim Archer and Joe Attard for their roles as Director 4

of Referees and Assistant Directors of Referees, Matt Hewitt as Development Officer, David Abood and Lionel Brown who conducted our rulings at our general meetings, Wayne Loveday who attended most of the judiciary hearings, Lionel Brown and his team who are our first contact with new members at our Coaching courses. Robert Dubois who almost single handedly put together the golf day buying the prizes and making sure everyone had an enjoyable day. In 2011 we face the challenge of finding members to fill the roles vacated by those dedicated members mentioned above. Our Association will only be as strong as the members who contribute to it and I put it to each of you to consider what your contribution will be to the Association this coming season. Throughout 2010 Kevin Shanahan and I did not always see eye to eye, though we acknowledge that we see things from different perspectives we are working towards the same goals. I trust that we will improve our relationship in 2011. I extend my thanks to Brian Tovey and the Committee of the Junior League for their open dialogue with our Association and allowing interaction with the junior league clubs. My thanks go to Peter Winchester, Garry Hughes and CEO Todd Greenberg for their friendship, patronage and sustained support over many years. The committee took a conscious decision to acknowledge our long term sponsors at the Blue and White Cabaret evening held in June. We have enjoyed a strong relationship with the Canterbury League Club for the past 14 years as our major sponsor and without them we would not have been able to enjoy the social events that we offer to members. It is pleasing to note that the League Club and Football Club have combined to enhance our sponsorship for season 2011 and beyond. Through Barry Ward, Director of both the Leagues Club and Football Club we have secured a one off contribution up to $8,000 to purchase communication equipment for our on-field use in addition to the $4,000 major sponsor contribution we receive each year. From season 2012 we will receive ongoing sponsorship funds of $8,000 per season. We greatly thank the League Club and Football Club for their strong support in the past and into the future. For the past 5 years we have proudly advertised Ronnies Demolition & Excavation Services as our sleeve sponsor through the generosity of Paul and Yvette Hassarati. Through the global financial crisis we have endured over the past couple of years Ronnie’s has continued to provide sponsorship funds without question and we have also enjoyed their participation at meetings and social events. We look forward to their continued involvement in the Association for many years to come. NSW Harness Racing Club and CEO Paul Dumesny has been the silent partner for 14 continuous years. Each year Paul, without question, has provided the Association with its printing needs including the ‘Calendar of Events” and the “Annual Report”. As our funds are to be used wisely it is a significant benefit to the Association to know that the printing costs are being taken care of each year. We 5

hope that we will continue our relationship in the years ahead and that we can reciprocate in any way we can. During the season 2 of our long term members have suffered on going illnesses. I pass on my best wishes for a speedy recovery to Tom Healy and one of our past Presidents Bob Styles and hope to see them at our meetings in the near future. Early in the year we lost one of our members in Kevin Jeffes. Our condolences go to Kevin’s family for their loss. In conclusion, I appreciate the vote of confidence that the members have shown in me to be your President. It would not have been possible without my wife Susan’s initial encouragement to stand for the position and her ongoing patience and support. The Association is your association and as referees it is your duty, as a group and as individuals, to be the best you can be. That means having a very good knowledge of the rules of the game (in all its forms), to be physically fit and at the same time participate in the social events and enjoy the companionship of your fellow members. There are new initiatives under way for 2011 and I look forward to an exciting season. Thanks for reading this long forward and I look forward to seeing all of you at the AGM.

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Mario Cafarelli

Mr. Chairman and Members, The Season commenced with the Annual General Meeting in February. John McCormack became the association’s sixteenth President in 87 years. John followed Paul Archer, who served for 13 years in the role. Our Patrons for 2010 were Peter Winchester and Garry Hughes once again. They were joined by Mr. Todd Greenberg from the Bulldogs Football Club. All three gentlemen are great supporters of the association. Chris Cafarelli filled the role of Vice President and Adam Gee was elected to the committee for the first time by the members. Other positions remained unchanged from 2009. Former President, Paul Archer, was represented with Life Membership at the annual Blue & White Cabaret Dinner in June. Paul’s outstanding achievements during the past 30 years are only surpassed by his devotion to the association. This was a worthy recognition of his continued input into the association. Congratulations to Paul. Sponsors Canterbury League Club’s major sponsorship arrangements continued again in 2010 and as always, the association is indebted to the Board Of Directors for the support provided by the club. Ronnies Demolition and Excavation were sleeve sponsors for the season. We thank Paul and Yvette Hassarati for the generous input to the association, not just financially but through their friendship as well.

9

This season we welcomed Nathan Hall and Control Painting And Decorating as shorts sponsors. Nathan is the son of Jim Hall, a Life Member of the association and a good friend to all members. Junior League The season proper ran fairly smoothly during the year and, in particular, grand final days at Hammondville Oval were smooth and problem free days. A new system for judiciary was introduced, whereby clubs were required to enter an early plea. Referees were then only required to attend when a not guilty plea was entered by the club. In general, the system worked well but I believe there is still room for improvement, particularly in the way the association is advised of the pleas and what referees will be required for judiciary hearings. As with any new system, some time may pass before all the bugs are ironed out. Congratulations to Gary Towner for winning the junior league’s Les Matthews Referees’ Appreciation Award, as voted by the clubs. Early in the year the president, director of referees and I met with the junior league and high on the agenda was our association’s policy regarding trial games. After hearing the junior league’s comments, and taking into account our members’ concerns, our committee recommended a number of policy changes to the members. These recommendations were endorsed by the members at our first general meeting and the association’s trials policy for 2011 will be: Both Saturdays & Sundays according to members’ availability. No restrictions on out of district teams. 4 weekends of trials only. Games played under competition rules. Fees to be 50% of regular match fee. Referees MUST be appointed by the Association. These new arrangements will be closely monitored by the committee and director in 2011 and may be reviewed again next year if necessary. Membership & Meetings The association held 13 meetings during the and the average attendance was 38. 10

There were 7 new members this season and all of them settled in well to refereeing. They were Prasad Kanitkar, Nick Oustambasidis, Raphael Tarazy, Warwick Poll, Aaron McAndrew and Joey Yarak who were all new to refereeing, and Peter Dorsett who came to us with some experience from the Illawarra district. The average attendance at meetings has steadily decreased over the past few years and on two occasions this season we had to wait for a quorum to be present after the scheduled start time. Active members in particular must remember that meetings are an important part of our association’s administration and procedures. They serve as a forum for passing on information to members, allow members to share knowledge and give feedback to the association and also provide an opportunity to mix socially with each other. Training & Development As in previous years, training has been a major disappointment in 2010. At the start of the season the committee decided to create an Development Squad that would consist of members it felt had the potential to advance to the Interdistrict squad in the near future. Training was split into two sessions, one intense physical session for the development squad and any other member who wished to attend, and one for all active members, which was more low key and drills orientated. Initially, the development squad was well attended, but by the end of the season only Nathan Loveday and John Gerges were still committed enough to put in the hard yards. The active members should not kid themselves. If you have any aspirations of advancing in the game as a referee or touch judge, hard training is an integral part of the process, and it all starts here in the district. I wish to thank Chris Cafarelli for conducting the weekly training session, sometimes under very trying conditions. Also thanks to Matthew Hewitt who acted as a coaching mentor to referees on the field and provided feedback and coaching tips. Grade – NSWRL/NRL Our graded members all performed well this season. Their achievements includedDavid Abood – Sideline Official for Three State Of Origins, Stand-by NRL Grand Final Sideline Official and Stand-by ANZAC Test Match sideline official. 11

Richard Daizli - Toyota Cup Grand Final Sideline Official. Mathew Damaso - Toyota Cup Grand Final Stand-by Sideline Official. Jimmy Oliveira – Bundaberg Red Cup Grand Final Touch Judge, NSW v QLD u16s Touch Judge. Adam Gee – Toyota Cup Semi-Final Referee. Off the field, George Jankowski received the George And Amy Hansen Award for service to the association during the season. Vale In 2010 we received the sad news that Val Peters, the wife of former life member Ron Peters, passed away. We also heard that former member John Byron had passed away mid year. John was a good friend and was fondly remembered by a number of members who knew him well. Kevin Jeffes also passed away early in the year after suffering poor health in recent times. Whilst Kevin will be remembered as a Parramatta and NSWRL referee he was also a member of Canterbury and a good friend to many members. It was also with sadness that we learnt about the passing of Mavis Garland, wife of Johnno Garland, who was our first ever Honorary Member For Life. The association extends its deepest sympathies to the families of all these good people, and any one who suffered a loss during the year. General Unfortunately, early in the season our association came under attack by some person unknown, who attempted to cause disruption by making bogus phone calls to some of our members. In the weeks following these calls the seriousness of the matter escalated when I received an anonymous email that threatened the safety of our members. My immediate reaction was to report the matter to Bankstown Police. The junior league was also advised and their response was immediate. That weekend, with the cooperation of the junior league, the district clubs and the local police all major grounds were covered with some police presence and with a heightened level of alert by club officials. I wish to thank Bankstown Police, Kevin 12

Shanahan and all the clubs for their prompt response to our concerns and their actions in ensuring our members remained safe. The disappointing thing about this whole affair was it is my belief the person involved was a former member because he or she had intimate knowledge of the workings of our association and also had access to the members’ area of our website. This necessitated an upgrading of security to the members’ area. The generic login was removed and all members were issued with their own login and passwords. I am pleased to say, once the police became involved no further incidents occurred and I sincerely hope this matter has been put behind us. In the past six years as secretary I have seen a gradual change in the association and in the broader society we live in. These days there are more and more options and attraction for young people and the commitment to refereeing is understandably difficult. This, coupled with family time and irregular work schedules can make it difficult for anyone to focus on one single aspect of their busy lives. This includes me. I have therefore decided not to seek re-election as secretary for the 2011 season. I have been in the role of secretary for 6 years and in that time I have learnt may new things and faced quite a number of challenges. I have enjoyed the role and had great satisfaction in knowing I have been able to give something back to the association. I would like to thank all the members who have supported me over the past six years. They include all the various committee members during that time, and specifically, one or two former secretaries whose advice was sometimes sought and always wise. You all know who you are – thank you. At a committee meeting held in November Warren Gee also advised us he will not be seeking re-election as Assistant Secretary in 2011. I wish to thank Warren for all his efforts over the past 6 years and the assistance he has extended to both me and the treasurer. Chris Cafarelli has also announced he is off to see the world in February. Chris will be moving to Europe where he will be working as a tour guide with the Contiki group. I thank Chris for his input into the committee over the last 3 years and wish him all the best in his adventures. Finally, I must give a very big thank you to all my family, Anne-Maree, Chris, Dan and Alex. All of you have shared in my relationship with the association far beyond the past six years. Without all your love and support my role would never have been possible. Thank you. Good luck to all members in 2011 and see you at the AGM.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Gavin Beecroft

The social year was to commence in February with our annual cricket day. Unfortunately the weather was not kind and the 2010 cricket day had to be cancelled. Hopefully we will have better luck with the Cricket Day and weather in 2011. The Sunday night feast was almost a bi monthly event this year and was again enjoyed by the members and their partners at the end of the month. About 20 members regularly attended Sunday night feast in the months of April, May and July, we enjoyed Pizza in Belfield, Vietnamese in Bankstown and Chinese at Georges Hall throughout 2010. The first major function was the Blue and White Cabaret which was held on a Sunday Evening on the long weekend in June and was a great success. The room looked great as always and there was plenty of food and drinks had by all. Congratulations to Paul Archer who received recognition for his efforts within the Association over the past 38 years and was re-presented with Life Membership. The final meeting in late August was the Leo Randle Meeting, which was well attended by the members, it was a night to reflect on the efforts and contributions Leo made over the many years he was involved within the Association. The Life Members Reunion Night was held again at the Leagues Club on the October long weekend. It was an enjoyable night for all those who attended and as usual it was an opportunity for senior members to mix with the younger members and share stories of the bygone era, and as per usual the feature to the evening was the ‘Sorbent Awards’. Golf day was again at Rosnay Golf Club at Auburn in early October, with about 25 members and guests teeing off. While numbers were down on previous years, the day proved very successful and there was good feedback from the members. Well done to Robert Dubois and Johnny Gerges for organising a great day for the first time. Also thanks to Glenn, Lionel and Brian who assisted in looking after the BBQ on the day.

15

The Kid’s Picnic/Christmas Lunch was held at the Panania- East Hills Diggers Club. Lunch was provided and Santa visited the children and the kids and adults had a great day. I would like to thank Adam, Chris and Nathan for their efforts during the year for assisting with preparations of functions and events throughout 2010. Also thank you to Daniel Gardner who along with Nathan Loveday handled the “Sorbent Awards” at the Life Members Reunion. I would also like to take the opportunity to remind members that the Association will be having a Cocktail Function on the 5th of March 2011 to be held in the Terrace Bar at the Canterbury League Club. This Cocktail Function is to celebrate the Associations 90th Anniversary. All members are invited to come along and celebrate the Associations 90th Anniversary. If you are intending to come along please let me know. I am sure it will be a great evening. In closing I would also like to once again say a big thank you to my wife Rachel for her support, which enabled my participation both on and off the field during 2010.

COACHING COORDINATOR’S REPORT Mr. Lionel Brown

This season the coaching panel conducted three National Referees Accreditation Scheme courses at the Lakemba Services Club. Two of these courses were conducted in March, with a total of six candidates completing the training. There was also a third course conducted in June, with three out of four candidates completing the training. These courses are theory based first of all and then move to on field coaching conducted by Panel supervisors and field coaches. School boy candidates are developed by Tony Danks and Doug Keen through the NRAS high school program and candidates are then passed on to the districts for further development. Joe Attard from the CBRA Coaching Panel has assisted with a number of these courses. In February and October each year, Barry Ruttle conducts NRAS Level 2 courses over two days. Canterbury at present has three candidates moving through this Level 2 accreditation process. Course Level 2 1 1 1

The Safe Play Code, was highlighted through this season, it identified that all parties in our game need to develop a much greater understanding of the content and the implementation of this code. New team coaches must be exposed to the laws of the game and codes that are attached to the laws. The re introduction of this must be started at the team coaches accreditation course at the beginning of each season. Referees must also ensure that they follow through with these laws and codes, the referee is the font of knowledge on the field and they must keep a breast of this manner.

17

Over the off season, I would encourage referees to revisit the laws of the game and the Safe Play Code. This season Joe Attard was selected to travel to Perth, in the roll of mentoring Reg Marks in the exchange program. Glenn Jeffcoat was the NRL Community One winner for his contribution to referring, I am extremely lucky to work with these two people on the coaching panel, they continually give back to our association in time and effort. Many thanks must be directed to the Executive for their support, also, those who keep a close eye on new referees on game days, Barry Ruttle through the NRAS, Tony Danks and Doug Keen for their continual search for new referees and to Mario Cafarelli for his outstanding contribution to this association.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT REPORT Mr. Chris Cafarelli Being a great referee requires commitment – commitment to your on-field duties on the weekend, commitment to your Association and commitment to bettering yourself as a referee by using every tool available to you. Training is one of those key tools that can help you become not just a good, but a great referee. At one of our fitness sessions prior to the start of the 2010 season, I challenged our members to set themselves some goals. Some of these goals were for the short-term and Season 2010, whilst others were for their long-term refereeing endeavours. It was pleasing to see that each member had relevant and realistic goals, many of which could be worked towards to with the aid of weekly Training and Development sessions. A number of these members then proved across the season, by their continued attendance and active participation at training, that they were committed to achieving these goals.

19

Training and Development sessions were again conducted at the Rugby Field of UWS Milperra. This year the sessions were moved to Wednesday nights to allow for members with other commitments to attend. It was unfortunate though that this change did not see the attendance numbers at training increase on previous seasons. In 2010 we were extremely fortunate to have the support and expertise of NRL Referee Gavin Badger as part of the NRL Referee Buddy Program with district associations. Gavin attended most of our weekly sessions throughout the season and provided our active members with some first class training tips and drills. The advice and mentoring he provided to our members throughout the season was invaluable. Gavin also secured the NRL Referees’ Gym at ANZ Stadium for our referees training nights. All members who attended the session at the ANZ facility all agreed it was a fantastic session and great experience. Thank-you to Gavin for his assistance and work with our referees this year. In 2010 the Association created a Development Squad of referees. The squad was designed to provide referees in our Association with a chance to experience fitness training at a level equivalent to that of the NSW Referees Premier Squad. This squad was selected by the Directors of Referees and conducted a compulsory fitness session prior to our optional Training and Development session each week. Stavros Anagnostakis, John Gerges, Nathan Loveday, Simon Ghani and Feras Karem were the squad’s inaugural members. Whilst Training and Development Sessions were poorly attended in 2010, those members who were there on a regular basis and put in real effort made some great leaps forward as referees. Their hard work every Wednesday night running 400s and repeatedly going through in-goal touch judge drills paid off. I commend and thank those members on their efforts. I feel that the current Training and Development program is ideally suited to all of our members. In recent years, we have moved away from pure fitness to a program based on active skills and drills that all members can participate in and learn from. I hope that in future seasons all of our members can draw from the benefits of our Training and Development sessions without it feeling like a chore. Training can be a very social and enjoyable event each week, but it can only be successful in improving our members with their continued support and input at each and every session. Keep training hard, Round 1 is just around the corner again. Yours in Sport,

Chris Cafarelli TRAINING & COORDINATOR

DIRECTOR OF REFEREES’ REPORT Mr. George Elias

The season kicked off on the weekend of the 6 & 7 March with trials. With only 3 grounds and 16 games, all referees appointed officiated without any pull outs or requests for change of grounds. I thought the job was easy. Things deteriorated from then. Almost every weekend thereafter it was necessary to make changes. It was not always our members doing, as sometimes the Junior League made late changes. The majority of our members were able to fulfil their appointments, however there are some who requested late changes, where it was obvious that they would have known of their weekend commitments before the appointments were made. Active referees are to take note that one request for a change or pull out, could require many phone calls to cover that one change. It also means your fellow referee(s) have to over commit from what they originally thought they had to do. The trials ran over 4 weeks and for the first time, the referees were paid. Due to restrictions on only refereeing Sunday trials and only games involving Canterbury teams, we were able to cover all games. I would like to thank all those referees who officiated in these trials, mostly during the hottest part of the day. The season proper commenced in early April, with sadly 12 referees not officiating from the previous year. This is a serious concern and the Association is doing everything possible to limit this. We lost a few more during the season, one of which was my son. Whilst this was disappointing to me personally, I have come to realise that referees are a special breed and that referees are born, not made. On a positive note, we picked up 7 new referees, during the year. This does not count Matt Hewitt, who came out of retirement to do an Under 17’s line. To Feras, the referee of that game, you have bragging rights which very few district referees have. i.e. having an ex first grade referee running your line. During the season we were able to provide referees & touch judges to all matches, except for the occasional touch judges on a Saturday afternoon to Under 14’s matches. This was due to generally having the games at different grounds and 22

therefore having to move referees to do just the one line after they had completed their refereeing commitments for the day. The number of games scheduled on a Saturday night provided us with some challenges and with the Junior League in favour of having more games scheduled for Saturday nights, this is going to put more pressure on us. We again had a rotation system in place for approximately the first 10 weeks of competition, for our top 6 referees. I believe this worked well, both for our referees who got the opportunity to referee games from A grade to Under 17’s, and the players who were able to be exposed to a greater variety of referees. With none of our referees in the current Junior Representative squad, we selected 5 referees who we thought have potential and they were given extra training, and if necessary and we felt they were suitable & capable, would be considered for preferential appointments. I believe this was only partially successful and we will need to fine tune this next year. We were lucky to have Stephen Clapson, from the NSW Advisory Board, come and review three of these squad members and I am sure they received some real benefit from his advice. For the first time our three senior competitions, Under 19’s, 21’s & A grade were combined with Souths, Balmain & St George. As we only supplied referees & touch judges to games played in our district, some referees could have being appointed to grades which may have seemed like they were being dropped or promoted, but it was only because of the number of games in particular grades being played in our district. The number of complaints received were minimal and minor in nature. The most significant one was the inconsistent application of the Safe Play & Mini/Mod rules. A letter from Head Body re affirmed the rules, and I believe towards the end of the year we certainly had improved. It is something that all active referees will need to work on in the future. The rules are their for the safety of the players and most parents will expect us to apply them as they are written and intended. On behalf of my two assistants, Kim & Joe and myself, we would like to congratulate all the referees who officiated in the final series and in particular the Grand Finals. Special congratulations to Reg Marks who for the second year running took out the Clubb Johnson award, as our No. 1 ranked referee & Nathan 23

Loveday who took out the Farrelly Dick trophy as the most improved referee. These two awards are highly competitive and sought after and our choices were not easy and involved much discussion. We would also like to congratulate Nathan Loveday, and his chaperone, Dave Turvey, on being selected to referee on the Sunshine Coast, and Reg Marks & Joe Attard (I’m still not sure who was the chaperone) who went to Perth as part of our exchange program . I’m sure they both gained much experience and enjoyed their trip. Our appreciation and thanks goes out to all Advisory Board members, especially those who committed themselves nearly every weekend. We will continue to strive to report on as many referees as possible, however we have restrictions with our graded members, who having increasing commitments, are very limited in their opportunities to go out and report. In total, this year we did 108 reports, including semi finals, with all referees being seen at least 3 times. We believe we can improve on these numbers and the consistency & quality of the reports. I would like to acknowledge the commitment of some active referees whose availability is endless and find it difficult to say ‘no’ when I ask them at very late notice, of a change in their appointments or to do extra games. Without you, there would have been days when we would have had difficulty in filling all appointments. I won’t mention them, but I think you know who you are, and your efforts are greatly appreciated. It was unfortunate that earlier in the year we had a hacker, who contacted some referees advising them of forfeits or changes in their appointments, which were all bogus. It caused some problems, but all games were able to go ahead. The matter was referred to the Police, but the culprit was not found . I would like to thank John, Mario & all the Committee for their assistance during the year. There were times when my role was consuming a lot of time and I doubted myself as to whether I was capable of continuing. The confidence they instilled in me, allowed me to continue. To the district club and Kevin Shanahan & his committee, I thank them for their cooperation and responding to my concerns in a timely manner. Finally, I personally would like to acknowledge the work done, and thank Kim & Joe, my assistants, for their dedication to the role and all the assistance they have given me. Tuesday evenings were always very busy trying to finalise all appointments. In my role as Director, there were a number of occasions, when I had to polish off my boots, as a late call up, because there was no else I could get. I’m not sure whether this has given me the bug to come out of retirement again, or it is just a 24

temporary apparition. I will be considering my options, and obviously if I decide to be active again, I will not be nominating or this role in 2011.

HON. TREASURER’S REPORT Mr. Brad Zarb

At the first committee meeting of 2010 I pushed home the point that things had to change in terms of our ongoing financial losses year after year. In the 3 years prior, the association made a net loss of approximately $8,000 per year. That trend had to stop and we had to ensure things turned around immediately. The committee were very receptive to my comments and we made some changes and a commitment to improving our financial result in 2010. I am very proud to report that the association made a net gain this year of $2,330.02. This figure is slightly inflated by the fact we received 2 years sponsorship up front from Control Painting and Decorating, however it is a commendable turnaround from the previous few years. We were again fortunate to have the Leo Randle trust to reimburse the association for the substantial cost of our new uniforms this season as well as the popular exchange program. The fund provided the association with the total amount of $12,180.04. It is important that all members appreciate the fact that these funds left by Leo allow us to offer members with many benefits such as interstate trips where they gain such a valuable experience, something which we would otherwise not able to be offer on a yearly basis. A special mention must go to our sponsors, Canterbury Bankstown League Club Ltd., Ronnies Demolition & Excavation and National Trotguide who provided support once again. Also, Control Painting and Decorating joined us as a sponsor for the first time this year and it’s great to have them on board. The support we receive from all sponsors is greatly appreciated by the association. The NSWRL Referees’ Association again sent grants to the association throughout the year to assist with the development of referees and these were also gratefully received. Gavin Beecroft took on his role as head of the social committee with just as much enthusiasm as in his first season. He was very diligent in providing me with supporting paperwork regarding all funds allocated to him which made my job a lot easier. Warren Gee has the task of managing the members’ fees throughout the season as well as calculating how much we need to invoice the junior league for match payments. I am sure this is a very time consuming role and was again done with a great deal of accuracy and also done in a timely manner throughout the season. I greatly appreciate your help with this Warren. 26

I would like to conclude by thanking our new president John McCormack for all of his help and the committee as a whole for embracing the changes we made to improve our financial result this year.

Brad Zarb HON. TREASURER
