PATRON’S REPORTS SEASON 2016 Dr George Peponis Mr Arthur Coorey

Canterbury League Club is proud to have been the Major Sponsor of the CBDRLRA for a number of years and personally I am honoured to have been one of the three Patrons of the Association for 2016. As anyone who has ever played Rugby League knows, without our referees there is no game. I congratulate and commend the Association on the excellent work they do to ensure that the Canterbury Bankstown District is well served with qualified and competent officiating to ensure that the great game of rugby league can continue to grow and prosper in our area.

Dr George Peponis I would like to extend my personal congratulations to the CBDRLRA committee, staff and active members on the ground for their invaluable contribution to our game in 2016. As patron, I am both honoured and proud to be associated with the CBDRLRA who through dedicated training, development and mentoring ensure the progression and continuance of rugby league not only for the CanterburyBankstown Junior League but also the NSWRL and NRL competitions. I look forward to offering my continuing support in the New Year and take this opportunity to wish all at the CBDRLRA and their families a safe and prosperous 2017.

PRESIDENT’S FORWARD

Mr. Paul Archer

When I stood down as your President following the conclusion of the 2009 season little did I know that I would return to that position some 7 years later. In fact, it is not the first occasion in our 95 year history that a former President has returned to the role, the late, great Vic Meinrath was our leader in 1925 26 and then returned in 1934 – 36, quite a coincidence, we both had breaks of 7 years! Season 2016 was one to remember, we recruited 20 new members, had our best attendance for several years at weekly training, our Blue & White function and Life Member’s night, we held our first ever Development Camp, signed up a wonderful new short sponsor in BIDEL Group, conducted a successful joint training night with Cronulla and St. George Referees and mid-season we had our own meeting room established at Belfield RSL. In relation to the meeting room, we will be on the move again in 2017 and initially our meetings shall return to the Lakemba Club. But for me the highlight of the season was to witness firsthand the bond amongst members, it reminded me of what the Association was like several decades ago! To see the bonding and friendship displayed over the Gala Day weekend and again at Life Members night was outstanding. To witness members stand and applaud Wayne Loveday receiving the Leo Randle Award, was truly inspirational. This is what makes CBRA so great. Our future is bright, our active membership base is solid with a number of the new recruits showing good potential, it is our joint responsibility to provide these younger members with the tools that they will need to progress to Junior Reps and hopefully to grade. This was the reason why the Committee decided to introduce the Development Camp. We arranged guest speakers of the calibre of Gavin & Kasey Badger, Shayne Hayne, Peter Burke and our own Adam Gee. The camp was held at The Entrance and I am confident that those who attended enjoyed the experience. The camp was subsided from funds from the Leo Randle Trust. The newer recruits also gained from the support offered by our own strong loyal long term members, this is truly a great Association, built on friendship, trust and integrity.

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

In relation to the financial position of the Association, on perusal of the Financial Statements within this report you will find that we have returned to the ‘black’ after several seasons in the ‘red’. We had to turn this financial position around and I acknowledge the hard work of our Treasurer, Gavin Beecroft and the Committee in assisting me with this important area. During the latter part of the year we called for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for positions on our Centenary Committee. Although we do not celebrate this milestone until 2021, it will be here before we know it and it is time to commence the planning program. We have appointed 3 sub committees with myself as the Chair, the subcommittees are: Social – Adam Gee, Kim Archer and Kane Thorburn Financial/Sponsorship – Hilton Wood and Jimmy Oliveira History – Col Turnell, David Abood and Daniel Gardner. The Centenary Committee will meet prior to our AGM and commence to draft a plan to allow us to progress these areas of responsibility for our celebrations. Further, I offer my congratulations to all those members who gained Grand Final appointments, to those who missed out, strive to achieve that goal in 2017. To the members who received awards, well done and a very special mention for the efforts of Nathan Loveday, who received the Clubb-Johnson Trophy for a record fourth consecutive year as our leading district referee. It is most pleasing to see that Adam Gee has established himself as an NRL referee and I look forward to many more lead appointments coming his way. Also, it would be remiss if I did not thank the Committee and members for naming the new Award the ‘Archer- Garwood Trophy’, a great honour for both Bob and myself. As announced at the conclusion of the season our Director of Referees’, George Elias has stood down from that position. On behalf of the Committee and all members, can I offer our appreciation to George for his enormous contribution to the Association over many years. Also, Committeeman, Lionel Brown who has occupied a position on the Executive for many years has advised that he will not be seeking re-election at the AGM, many thanks Lionel

6

for your efforts. Also, Lionel’s efforts as our Coaching Co-ordinator with the assistance of Joe Attard and Barry Belford are acknowledged. As mentioned the Blue and White function had our largest attendance for several years and it was fitting that large numbers were in attendance to acknowledge Barry Belford as our latest Life Member. Well done Barry. To all our sponsors can I express the members’ appreciation for your support, special mention to Canterbury League Club as our major sponsor for the past 20 years and in particular to Director Arthur Coorey for his friendship and continued support. To our other sponsors - Ronnie’s Demolition, MIYO, BIDEL Group and TABCORP Park Menangle, many thanks. Further, the financial support received from NSWRLRA is acknowledged and most appreciated. I acknowledge the support provided by the Bulldogs Football Club under the guidance of Chairman, Ray Dib and CEO Raelene Castle. In 2016 the Junior League appointed a new Manager and Gavin Lawrence was a breath of fresh air, he provided solid support to our Association and I look forward to continuing our relationship 2017. I was proud to lead in the main a very youthful and energetic Committee and special mention to Daniel Gardner in his first year as our Secretary. Daniel performed to a very high standard and has introduced many new initiatives during the year including remodelling our Annual Report. The Association is in very safe hands with Daniel as our Secretary, a position I hope he maintains for many years! Thanks mate for your assistance to me during 2016. I would like to express my thanks to my wife Kim for her ongoing support to me in my role but also for the amount of work she does for the Association, thanks Kim! I am truly blessed to have you in my life. Finally, I would like to thank you, the members of this great Association. Your friendship and dedication makes it much easier for me to occupy this position, bring on season 2017.

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT

Mr. Daniel Gardner

Mr Chairman and Members, The 2016 season will be one that I will remember for quite some time. It started in November 2015 when I received a call from George Elias who informed me he was standing down as Secretary, and further, believing I was the right person to take over (even if I had my doubts!). I had always imagined how much work the Secretary role entails and I was quite daunted by the prospect of it. By all intentions the natural progression is from Assistant Secretary to Secretary, I just didn’t envision it was going to be so soon. Being still active was in the back of my mind as a potential issue, but I feel I put that aside when required to fulfil my obligation to the members. I look back at the season that was and I am proud of where we are as an Association and I feel we are on the right track and our future looks great. I need to start by thanking 3 people who have all helped me immensely this season – Paul Archer, Mario Cafarelli & George Elias. When I joined the Association in 2005 Paul Archer was President and Mario Cafarelli was Secretary. Fast forward 11 years to 2016 and Paul is back as President, and I was constantly approaching Mario and George to ask for clarification or guidance on in my new role. I truly do appreciate all the assistance I have received in finding my feet. All 3 are Life Members of the Association and it just typifies how great our Association is with them all still around today and helping out where needed. The 2016 season got off to a sad note, with the passing of Life Member and Leo Randle Award recipient, Tod Walker on 21st January. Further details on Tod’s Membership record can be found further in the report. Throughout the year we held many social functions, including our Premier event The Blue & White Cabaret and the Life Members Reunion, both of which were extremely well attended and really showcased why we are the ‘Social

10

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Association’. Congratulations to Barry Belford who became our 83rd Life Member at our Blue & White Cabaret. Barry originally joined the Association in 1968 and was a member for 12 years before being granted a clearance as he left Sydney to work in Grafton in 1979. Barry rejoined in 1996 and has been actively on committees and the advisory board for the past 20 years. Well done Barry, a very deserving Life Member! The Seminar was once again held this season in February. It unfortunately clashed with the NSWRLRA Conference, which forced a few late changes to the schedule. Thanks to those members who assisted at the seminar and to all the active members who supported the day through their attendance. The AGM was held on Thursday 25th February at the home of our major sponsor, Canterbury League Club. Paul Archer was elected unopposed as President after previously being in the chair for 13 seasons (1997-2009). Our three patrons for 2016 were Dr George Peponis, Arthur Coorey & Raelene Castle, who all gratefully accepted their nominations and expressed their thanks to the members for the honour. The Committee was vastly different than in previous seasons. With this being my first year as Secretary, Peter Chayna was elected as Assistant Secretary. Brad Zarb returned to the role of Vice President and Gavin Beecroft in his 5 th season as Treasurer. Nathan Loveday was once again elected as Social Secretary with Lionel Brown and Kim Archer both elected as Committee Members. Sponsorship This season our partnership with Canterbury League Club as our major sponsor continued. They have been our major sponsor for 20 years and we are extremely grateful for the relationship we have with them. All our meetings and social functions are held at their venues and they are always willing to accommodate our needs. Special thanks to Dr George Peponis and Arthur Coorey who facilitated our move into Belfield RSL where we were able to display our Honour Boards and have our own room for meetings etc. Unfortunately, we recently received news that as of January 2017 the lease for

11

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Belfield RSL will not be renewed and we will not be able to stay there. For the interim we will be back at The Lakemba Club. Ronnie’s Demolition & Excavation were once again our sleeve sponsor for 2016. Thanks to Paul & Yvette Hasaratti for their continued generosity and support. Both regularly attend our social functions and have a wonderful relationship with many of our members. Thanks to NSW Harness Racing and in particular Bruce Christison for assisting with all our printing needs, including the Annual Report. Bruce is always more than willing to help and it is greatly appreciated. Each year we attend Menangle for our Trot Night and it is always a wonderful night even if Ray Payne is the only one picking winners. MIYO Teamwear returned this season as our gear sponsor and we thank Nathan Loveday for all his efforts in supplying us with gear all year round. This year saw us welcome a fantastic new shorts sponsor in BIDEL Group, who signed a 3 year agreement. Thanks to one of our members, Pierre Gerges, who assisted with this sponsorship through his friendship with John Fadel from BIDEL Group. We are extremely grateful for the support from all our sponsors, not only the financial aspect, but many of our sponsors attend as many social functions as they can and it only enhances our relationship. Junior League This season saw a lot of changes occur at Junior League level. Lindsay Roach was elected as President of the Junior League this year. The district club decided to part ways with Kevin Shanahan and sought to employ a Competition Manager for the CBDJRL. Gavin Lawrence was appointed to this role and this meant a fresh start to a degree with the Junior League and our Association heading into 2016 with new Presidents and Secretaries. Gavin found his feet quite quickly and personally I have to say he did a fantastic job in a role that is extremely difficult. He was always on hand to chat if needed and we spent nearly every Monday throughout the season sifting through reports and ensuring the weekend went smoothly. One thing I have to say is his support of the referees was unwavering and he was always out and about

12

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

every weekend at the grounds. I believe he has had a positive impact on our competition and I hope he continues in the role. As always there were a few hiccups at the start of the season, but overall it was a controversy free season and Gavin and his team should be commended for that. This year saw the introduction of Independent League Officers (ILO) which were basically a neutral set of eyes at EVERY ground for EVERY game – Saturday & Sunday. I feel the ILO’s contributed greatly in the decline of unsavoury incidents at grounds. Whilst the ILO was only there to observe, it seemed to act as a deterrent to stop some behaviour. Whilst you can’t stop all the negative behaviour it certainly was minimal. Grand Final weekend saw us have 11 CBDJRL Grand Finals (9s-13s) and 7 SCC Grand Finals, 5 of which were refereed by our members. Congratulations to Nathan Loveday who finished the season with the 1 st Grade Grand Final, being the highest ranked SCC Referee. This meant he won the Clubb-Johnson Trophy for an unprecedented 4th consecutive season, an outstanding achievement. Well done! Gala Weekend was one to remember and is quickly getting back to how it used to be (long before my time). The most pleasing aspect this year was how many members that weren’t running were there to support their fellow referees, as well as the senior/non-active members who attended to support the active referees, many thanks, it didn’t go unnoticed. Being lucky enough to get one of the 5 SCC Grand Finals, it was inspiring to look over and see the hill covered in our blue polo shirts. We truly are a great Association and the camaraderie is second to none. Judiciary once again had the early-guilty plea system which decreased the number of times our members had to attend Judiciary. There was an unsavoury incident in an U12s match early on in the season which got quite a lot of news coverage and had a negative impact on the district. I am pleased to say the referee for that match (Taha Iskandar) handled himself excellently and did everything required of him both during the game and at Board of Management. I am sure it would’ve been quite a daunting situation so well done Taha.

13

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Thanks to Lindsay Roach, Gavin Lawrence and all other members of the Junior League. We received a lot of support from the Junior League when needed and Gavin did a great job of keeping us informed of everything happening throughout the season. We are definitely moving in the right direction and the main purpose is to ensure we allow rugby league to be played, with referees being able to contribute to this without incident. Membership & Meetings This year the Association held 13 meetings, including the AGM and the average attendance was 42. We are the only Association within NSW that still meets fortnightly and whilst there has been a push in recent times to go to monthly the Committee feels we are in a position to stay fortnightly. This is something that is constantly reviewed should the numbers decline. Meetings are a chance for members to interact and have discussions on various topics as well as hopefully learn through rulings etc. They are for the sole benefit of members, who are encouraged to attend when possible. This year saw us change our meeting night to Wednesday, mainly due to the NRL scheduling Thursday Night Football. Given we have a lot of referees who still play and therefore train Tuesday/Thursday, this was a positive move and it was supported with the average attendance of 42 up from 37 last year. This season saw us recruit 20 new members, which is the highest number in one season since 2002 where we had 26 new members. As always, the Committee is mindful that whilst recruiting 20 members is a fantastic achievement, we have to retain these members. Steps are in place to ensure the retention of these members, including an off-season think tank with all new members to get feedback on their experience in their first season. As mentioned previously, this year saw us move to a room in Belfield RSL which enabled us to have a ‘home’ where we could hang our honour boards, photos etc and had full use of the room for meetings, seminars etc. Special thanks to Paul Archer, Warren Gee, Lionel Brown, Barry Belford, Col Turnell and Nathan Loveday who were all on hand to assist with the move. Unfortunately we will need to have another working bee in the New Year as we will no longer be using Belfield RSL.

14

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Training & Development Nathan Loveday was the trainer for this season, ably assisted by Brad Zarb and Joey Tesoriero. The numbers continued to be good this year with an average of 25 attending. The sessions are always varied weekly and are of great benefit to members. Thanks to our NRL and Graded members who attended throughout the season to assist with drills and offer their experience to members. This year saw a Combined Training Session held between Canterbury, St George and Cronulla. The session was well attended with over 70+ there between the districts. We were very well represented with 30+ members and on behalf of the Committee thanks to all members who attended what was a great night. Special thanks to Jared Maxwell who organised the night and managed to get multiple NRL referees in attendance who ran various drills throughout the night. Plans are already in place for this to become an annual event and it is definitely something our Association will support. A Junior Development Squad (JDS) was introduced this season, which saw younger members who have ambitions to progress through the refereeing ranks train each week at 6pm before the group session. Nathan Loveday ran this program and did a great job in mixing up the sessions each week. Whilst it was a definite step in the right direction, the Committee is reviewing the JDS for next season to ensure the best outcome is achieved and members who are involved truly commit to their goals. Over the weekend of 11th-13th November, after much planning our inaugural Training & Development Camp was held on the beautiful North Entrance and what a fantastic weekend it was! Not only did we have special guests Gavin & Kasey Badger, Shayne Hayne, Peter Burke and our very own Adam Gee offloading their wealth of knowledge to our members, but the camp was an excellent platform to allow members to bond and forge friendships. It is so heartening to see members of all ages interacting and enjoying each other’s company. Whether it was our morning walk as a group, the trivia which John Maarbani is still protesting or even the kayaking (which turned into swimming for some!), everyone enjoyed themselves and participated as a group. Massive thanks to Paul and Kim Archer for all their efforts in organising what was a very successful weekend.

15

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Just a week after our camp, on Sunday 20th November the NSWRLRA Interdistrict Touch Day was held, which we hosted at Kelso Park. The concept was revived in 2015 after many seasons on the backburner, and after winning the Senior Grand Final in 2015, we went one better this year, winning both the Junior & Senior Grand Finals! Well done to all members who participated in the day. Awards This season the Committee introduced a new award, the ‘Archer-Garwood’ Award, which is for outstanding contribution to the Association within that calendar year. The award is named after Paul Archer and Bob Garwood, both of whom have made enormous contributions to the Association over many years and was a unanimous decision at Committee level. All award winners were worthy recipients on the night. Congratulations to you all. • • • • •

Leo Randle Award – Wayne Loveday Clubb-Johnson Trophy – Nathan Loveday Farrelly-Dick Trophy – Joshua Mabon Mathews-Styles Award – Nathan Fayad Archer-Garwood Award – Nathan Loveday

Grade – NRL/NSWRL This year saw us represented once again in the NRL by Adam Gee. Adam refereed the season as an Assist Referee and continued to perform week after week. This lead to Adam being appointed as Lead Referee in Round 25 for the Dragons v Eels match. He backed this up with another Lead Referee appointment in Round 26 – Warriors v Eels. Congratulations to Adam on his season and to finish with 2 Lead Referee appointments will hopefully put him in good shape heading into 2017! On the Graded front, we had Richard Daizli, Jimmy Oliveira and Mat Damaso all in grade again this season. All 3 ran lines for Intrust Super Premiership (ISP) for the majority of the season. Unfortunately Richard picked up an injury towards the end of the season which probably affected him come Semi Final time.

16

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Mat finished off his season as a Touch Judge for the Sydney Shield Grand Final. Jimmy had a very strong season finishing as Touch Judge for the ISP Grand Final, therefore finishing in the Top 2 Touch Judges in the Grade Squad. Well done to all 3 of our Graded members for another strong season. Thanks to NSWRLRA for their ongoing support of our Association, in particular Chairman Paul Simpkins and Executive Officer Frank Leonard. Vale As mentioned previously, we lost Tod Walker on 21st January 2016. Tod was a Life Member of the Association and was the recipient of the Leo Randle Award in 2002. Tod was a long serving member and his membership record is as follows: Year Joined: 28th May 1969 Membership Number: 318 Life Membership: 1985 Life Membership Re-presentation: 1999 Leo Randle Award: 2002 Doubles Committee: 1974 Appointments/Advisory Board: 1976-77, 1979-86, 1988-92, 1995-2008 Before our AGM in February we learnt of the passing of both Mario Cafarelli and Bob Garwood’s mothers. In April, Life Member Peter Wallace’s daughter, Linda, unfortunately lost her battle with cancer. In June, we received news of the passing of Mat Damaso’s mother, Judy, as well as the passing of former member Michael O’Neill. Michael was the ClubbJohnson Trophy winner in 1982 and was graded between 1983-1985. On 3rd September 2016 Robert Culkin passed away. Robert joined Canterbury in 1943 and was graded between 1944-1949. Robert rejoined Canterbury in

17

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

2008 and in July 2016 was recognized by the NRL for his contribution to the game of Rugby League as he celebrated his 100th birthday. In late November Life Member Bob Garwood’s sister, Aileen, passed away after a lengthy illness. The Association extends its deepest sympathies to the families of all those mentioned who we lost throughout the season, as well as any member who suffered a loss throughout the year, our thoughts are with you. SOCIAL Once again this season, Nathan Loveday and his Social Committee did a fantastic job providing members with an array of different functions, all of which were well supported by the members. For further details on the year that was from the social side, Nathan’s report can be found further. The Committee supports all social functions throughout the year and with the majority of them being heavily subsidised by the Association, we encourage as many members as possible to attend and continue to support Nathan and his Committee. GENERAL To commemorate our 95th Anniversary this season the Committee organised for photos to be taken. All group photos were taken and the Association purchased one of each photo which we had framed to hang up and display. Many thanks to Bryden Sharp for his services in taking the photos and organising the framing, the photos turned out great! Overall I would have to say 2016 was a successful season. We are now at the point where the ‘next generation’ is coming through and it is great to see the amount of young members we have. We are building a positive culture and I love hearing stories about how things used to be in the ‘good old days’ and I feel we are getting back to those roots. It was decided at the end of 2015 that mod football would no longer use unofficial touch judges. The Committee felt that it was more of a hindrance than a help at times for referees. This policy continued in 2016 and had a

18

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

positive effect with referees not having to worry about people on the line questioning their decisions. The Committee once again kept the policy of members missing a week of appointments should they pull out after the appointments were released. This policy is proven to minimise late withdrawals from appointments and whilst we are mindful that when things happen refereeing isn’t always priority number one, we are making active members more aware of the fact if they pull out late it not only affects the Director who has to force changes, but it places extra burden on their fellow members who have to cover more games. The mentoring system was again used this season with less mentors and bigger groups. The Committee is reviewing the Mentor System for 2017 The Committee was strong again this year regarding expectation of standards set by members. New polo shirts were purchased this season and were compulsory to wear on game day. We need to look professional when arriving and leaving grounds and this was well supported by members throughout the season. As part of our new shorts sponsorship, all members received new on field shorts. Members were advised they would be compulsory and should anyone not wear them they would risk being fined match fees. It was pleasing to note only one member received a fine for one week and after that there were no issues. Our exchange programs continued again with both the Gold Coast Referees & Auckland Referees, as well as our Mini/Mod Exchange with Group 6. Congratulations to the following members who participated this season: • Gold Coast Exchange - Brad Zarb and Michael Tasker • Auckland Exchange - Nathan Loveday and Aaron McGeoch • Group 6 Exchange - Mariam Rifaie and Meleck Lababidi Thanks to Scott Truelove (Gold Coast Secretary), Steve Jelacic (Auckland Secretary) and Phil Daws (Group 6 Secretary) for all their efforts in facilitating the exchange programs and we hope to keep them going for years to come.

19

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Throughout the season, Milperra Colts held a fundraiser for a coach who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in January 2016. As such, when Milperra held a fundraiser day and it was put to the members that match fees could be donated we had 8 members put their names forward to participate. Overall $746 from match fees was donated to the cause. Thanks to the following members for their generosity in donating their fees – Reg Marks, Daniel Gardner, Matthew Gomes, Katoa Mairi, Gavin Beecroft, Michael Tasker, Nick Oustambasidis and Jamie Pomeroy. Thanks also to Paul and Kim Archer who also donated $50 towards the cause. This season we only had 2 members in the Junior Rep Squad – Nathan Loveday and Joseph Tesoriero. Both members performed well with Joseph making his debut in the centre for Harold Matthews throughout the season and ending the season as an In-goal Judge in the Harold Matthews Grand Final. Nathan finished in the top 4 referees come season’s end. We had Anthony Harb and Eddy El Kek in the NSW Emerging Talent Squad which looks to be reviewed heading into 2017 Raelene Castle spoke to members at one of our meetings towards the end of the season, and as always it was great to have Raelene attend and discuss various topics happening at the Bulldogs. Raelene took questions from the floor and I am sure everyone enjoyed her attending the meeting and we look forward to welcoming Raelene again in the near future. In closing, I want to thank all the members for the support I have received in my first year as Secretary. Whilst I may have made some mistakes along the way, I appreciate the understanding and patience of the member’s throughout the season. I still have a lot of learning to do and I hope that I can continue to do the job to the satisfaction of the members. As George has stated in previous years, the world we live in now is all about technology. Whilst I may be good with technology, I still have a long road ahead of me to get the life experience previous Secretaries of this Association have had and I hope I will grow over time. Thanks to my Assistant Secretary, Peter Chayna, who in his first year in the role was always there when I needed something or to simply offer guidance. To the rest of the Committee, thank you not only for your help this season but for the time and effort each and every one of you put into your roles to make our Association as great as it is.

20

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

To Lionel Brown, who has decided not to seek re-election on the Committee next season, thank you for your efforts not only this year but for many years. Lionel has been on the Committee for the past 14 years amongst all the other roles he has done within the Association for a prolonged period and has had a positive impact on where we are now as an Association. As mentioned previously, thanks to Paul Archer for all you have done to assist me this season. I still remember the first meeting I attended when I joined in 2005 and you had that knack of making anyone feel welcome even when it felt like I had been thrown to the wolves. My first meeting as Secretary this year felt the same. I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect. You reassured me and got me through it. Your experience as President is second to none and it has helped me knowing I have you there to bounce ideas off (or get shot down if they are no good). I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you this year and look forward to 2017. Enjoy the off season and see you all at the AGM

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT

Mr. Nathan Loveday

Cricket Day: We started off on a beautiful February day with 23 players for the Cricket Day. What followed was a 38 Degree day, plenty of water drunk and a streaker who was living at the Vale of Ah. Overall there was some great cricket played, some good fielding, batting and bowling. When you think about highlights it was the much anticipated clash of Zarb vs. Loveday. Zarb bowling from the road end Loveday enjoying the left arm round the wicket with an over of 666466 totalling 0/34 and the bragging rights for 12 months. You will find that Brad has visited the nets once a week since this day in a bid to improve his bowling. A big thanks to Lionel Brown, Barry Belford and Ray Payne for cooking the BBQ and everyone who fought the conditions of the day! It was warm but we survived! It was also pleasing to note there was no massive drama’s this year and Jimmy Oliveira stayed for both batting and bowling. Trots Night: The Trots night featured again and another great turn out. It is proving to be one of the Premier Social events on our calendar. 40 members made their way to Menangle Park a great and long term sponsor of ours that looked after us once again. This year we were joined by Peter Winchester and Garry Hughes, both Honorary Members for Life. It was a fantastic night, the banter, food and company was all fantastic. I think the only thing that let us down was Ray Payne not being able to give us a 60-1 shot all night but settling for 27-1 instead. This is a night I will encourage members, like all events, but this especially if you have not been make sure in 2017 you make the effort! Big thanks to Kim who did majority organising for this evening and continues to make it a fabulous night for all! Blue & White Cabaret: WOW! Is the first word that comes to mind! 134 Members and guests attended the 2016 Blue and White Cabaret in what was an amazing night. Barry Belford presented with Life Membership in what was very well deserved!

Congratulations Barry! We had a change of DJ who lightened up the place all night with plenty of dancing! This was one of the better B & W nights in recent years. Big thanks to all the members and guests that turned out to enjoy it. Life Members Reunion: A much improved turn out to the 2016 Life Members Reunion to celebrate the achievements of current members and also to pay tribute to the Life Members that have made this Association what it is. There were presentations galore with the current committee agreeing to present Gold and Silver Life Member badges for extended service to the Association. This idea was well received by all. Special thanks to BIDEL Group for sponsoring the purchase of these Life Member badges! Sponsors were on hand and they were thanked for their fantastic contribution in what makes our Association so great.

Big congratulations to the award winners on the evening. All very deserving! Matthews-Styles Award - Nathan Fayad Farrelly- Dick Trophy - Joshua Mabon Leo Randle Award - Wayne Loveday

I want to congratulate Wayne (Dad) on this award it’s a fantastic achievement. When Paul read out the long list of your service to the Association, it was evident how much of a contribution you have had and how many members you have assisted over the years. Well done Old Timer well deserved! Golf Day: The 2016 Golf Day took place at Barden Ridge for the first time! A fantastic day greeted us and it’s a real shame the Golf couldn’t reach that standard! Big thanks to all those who attended. Thanks also to Lionel and Joe for slaving away on the BBQ all day. To Kim for organising the prizes and any extra things needed and last but not least Pierre for driving around on the cart all day providing refreshments to those out and about. Big thanks to the members that brought guests along, it made the numbers sky rocket and to BIDEL Group who sponsored the novelty holes and had 17 people in attendance to support our event!

Thanks to John, Steve, Geoff and all the guys from BIDEL for the amazing contribution to support the golf day. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my Social Committee - Aaron McAndrew, Kim Archer & Joshua Mabon for their assistance at all events. It’s encouraging to see new people on these Committees to assist in the running of events throughout the year. To all the people that have assisted in the setting up of events, cooking the BBQ or rallying their mates to come along there is plenty of you so a massive thanks to all. To Kim who is not only the right hand lady but does majority of the work to make the functions run smoothly, we always manage to find a hiccup even if it’s not our fault but Kim keeps me cool and we get the job done. So thank you Kim your support doesn’t go unnoticed and is definitely appreciated by all the members and especially our Committee. In finishing off, I really want to thank every member and guest for their support of the social events. I dare say there will be a couple of changes to next year’s social calendar so if you have any ideas regarding new social functions please contact me. As always I encourage everyone to get involved and continue to enjoy the social aspect of the association!

SPONSOR IN FOCUS MAJOR SPONSOR – Canterbury League Club This season marked 20 years with Canterbury League Club as Major Sponsor of our Association, with the partnership commencing all the way back in 1997. Over the years, Canterbury League Club have been an integral part of our Association, allowing our functions to be held at their club/s, as well as offering funding for communication gear over the years, much to the benefit of our active member base. As recent as this season, there was an opportunity to relocate to Belfield RSL with the chance to have our own room for meetings, seminars etc. This was only possible through the generosity of the League Club, in particular Arthur Coorey and Dr George Peponis. This room gave us a chance to have a home, where we could hang honour boards, photos and other memorabilia of the Association. Canterbury League Club offers a wide range of facilities for their members and guests and more information is available at www.canterbury.com.au

DIRECTOR OF REFEREE’S REPORT

Mr. George Elias

Once again, the Committee agreed to split the Director’s roles, one covering senior games and the other covering junior games. To Daniel Gardner and Kim Archer, I greatly appreciate your work each week doing the appointments for all junior football played on Saturday. To Lionel Brown, I offer my appreciation for all his help as an Assistant Director. Most people would not have known that every Wednesday night at Panania Pub we were doing the appointments and NOT having a drink. As was the case last year, we were not able to supply referees to all grounds during the trials. There were simply too many grounds to cover with many of our clubs hosting clubs from other districts. The committee may need to discuss with the Junior League a limit of grounds we could cover on both the Saturdays & Sundays during the trials. This left us a little ‘off side’ with some clubs, but they were told they can’t expect to arrange trials two days before the weekend and still have referees. The Junior League agreed with us and trials went without a hitch (if that’s possible!). It was pleasing to see that the number of late withdrawals continuing to reduce. Our policy of suspending referees from active appointments for 1 week should they withdraw late did contribute, I think, to this reduction, but I would also like to think that members are taking more ownership and understand the extra work involved in finding replacements. The number of Advisory Board reports increased significantly. This was mainly due to the help we received from some of our senior active referees who obtained their Level 1 coaching certificate which allowed them to do reports on referees up to Under 16’s. All Final Series game were covered by an Advisory Board member, and I must say that all referees performed very well, with some exceptional excellent

26

CBDRLRA Inc. 95th Annual Report & Financial Statement

performances. As is always the case, some referees were disappointed with their rankings, however appointments were made based on performances, keeping in mind that younger referees showing promise, were given some preferential appointments. Members were advised this was going to happen and we offer no apologies. Some of our newer younger referees are showing enormous promise and we need to ensure they are given opportunities to enable them to reach their potential. Our mentoring system and the introduction of a Junior Development Squad has greatly contributed to this. Remember, if you have aspirations of making the Junior Rep panel, you must have your Level 2 ticket. We had 20 new referees (at last count) this year. All have settled in well and initial indications are that they have settled better than expected. It was pleasing to see that some of them refereed a Grand Final in their first year. I look forward to watching them progress further in the years to come. I would personally like to thank & congratulate Lionel Brown (Coaching Coordinator) and Barry Belford (Recruitment Officer) for the commitment they have given in recruiting and organising the new members. Finally I would like to once again thank Daniel Gardner for taking on the role of ‘Junior’ Director, and our two Assistant Directors, Lionel Brown & Kim Archer, all the Advisory Board members and the Mentors who went out and did some reporting. Our numbers for 2017 are looking promising and the improvement shown in many of our younger referees gives me great confidence in our future. We just need a little more commitment in numbers on the Advisory Board.

LEO RANDLE TRUST REPORT

Mr. Paul Archer

Background of Leo Randle Trust The Trust was established in 2005 following a most generous legacy left to the Association by esteemed former Life Member and President, Leo Randle. The Trust is governed by a legal document called the ‘Trust Deed’ and this document is currently being reviewed. SPONSOR IN FOCUS SLEEVE SPONSOR – Ronnies Demolitions Established in 1988, Ronnies Demolitions are well known for professional demolition expertise. Ronnies operate a unique model that allows their service standards to remain high and their demolition and excavation rates low. Originally sponsored by ‘Ronnies Environmental Services (RES)’ in 2006-2007, Ronnies Demolitions have been our sleeve sponsor since 2008. The involvement from the owners, Paul & Yvette Hasaratti was originally as a parent of a referee when their son Jeffrey joined the CBRA ranks. Jeffrey has since moved on from CBRA, whilst Ronnies have continued to sponsor our Association. Paul & Yvette have formed a wonderful friendship with many of our members and regularly attend our social functions. We are extremely thankful for the kind sponsorship from Ronnies Demolitions each season and look forward to continuing the wonderful relationship for years to come! TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Mr. Nathan Loveday

I would like to start by thanking Kylie Lofts and Revesby Heights JRLFC for allowing our Association the use of Neptune Park on a weekly basis during the year. Something that everyone should be proud of was that most weeks we average 25 active members! This is strong considering the amount of referees we have that still play. Training as a whole was outstanding and I would like to thank the following Senior/Life Members that gave up their time to assist us in a session or more through the year: • • • • • • •

David Abood Mario Cafarelli Adam Gee Joe Attard Lionel Brown Wayne Loveday Barry Ruttle

The experience and assistance you guys gave was outstanding and a big thanks for giving up your time to help. Big thanks also must go to those senior active members that assisted us in coaching and running drills: • • • •

Reg Marks Daniel Gardner Brad Zarb Joseph Tesoriero

Without you all assisting and adding variety training certainly would not have been as enjoyable as it was.

Season 2016 saw the inclusion of a Junior Development Squad. Aim - To fast track the development of referees with potential and assist in providing the pathways. 2016 Junior Development Squad Anthony Harb Meleck Lababidi Kassem Maarbani Joshua Mabon

Aaron McAndrew Aaron McGeoch Mariam Rifaie Michael Tasker

The hope was that all members would understand a level of commitment needed to progress through the ranks as we as an Association look to improve our structures and set ups to provide a positive pathway. I think that slowly all members are starting to understand the desire and resilience needed. It is not an easy road and hopefully with some maturity these members will understand the structure better to be able to adapt and put in the time required to succeed. There was fitness testing in which a beep test was done every 5 weeks, I am happy to say that ALL members improved along the way which is also an encouraging signs of the extra work being done away from just our training. See below the members training attendance for the season: Name Anthony Harb Meleck Lababidi Kassem Maarbani Joshua Mabon Aaron McAndrew Aaron McGeoch Mariam Rifaie Michael Tasker

As you can see from above, there were a couple of members affected by injury and all a part of the development will be trying to ensure that we can keep our members on the park with positive recovery and also warm up. In 2016 there were a number of achievements gained by members of the Junior Development Squad, which included: Anthony Harb GIO Schoolboy Cup Touchline First U17’s centre First U/19’s centre Mariam Rifaie First Sunday Centre U/14 Div 2 Representative at Koori Knockout 2016 Women Development Program NRL Aaron McGeoch GIO Schoolboy Cup Touchline First U/16’s Centre NZ Exchange 2016 (Women’s Open NZ Top League)

Meleck Lababidi First U13’s centre First Sunday centre 14D2 Joshua Mabon GIO Schoolboy Cup Touchline First U15’s centre Farrelly-Dick Trophy Recipient Michael Tasker Gold Coast Exchange 2016 (First U19’s centre)

I would like to congratulate all the members of this squad that have set themselves goals and have put in the hard yards to achieve them. It’s a vitally important tool to set goals and nothing more satisfying to achieve them. As has been mentioned in the report, we will be reviewing and looking to restructure the JDS in 2017 and as such calling it purely a Development Squad. We want all active members to be able to be given the same opportunity. In 2016 it was “put your name forward” in 2017 it will be a selected squad with the aim to ensure we set high standards and can maintain them. I want to thank the Committee for their strong support as well as all those that have given up their time to assist the JDS in the progression to a better future and pathways for these members.

COACHING COORDINATOR’S REPORT Mr. Lionel Brown

In comparison to the 2015 season, the Association saw a dramatic increase in recruitment of members for the 2016 season. This year we attracted a total of twenty (20) new members. It was pleasing to be able to nominate new members at most general meetings this year. The challenge for us now is to provide these referees with the education, self confidence and support to progress to higher levels within our game of rugby league. Additionally, we need to encourage them to become further involved with the association, such as taking on office positions within the Association. This year, new candidates were encouraged to register via the Play NRL link to register for face-to-face training courses. I am happy to report that the majority of new candidates were able to participate in courses run through the CBRA. These courses were facilitated at the Lakemba Services Club and later at the Belfield RSL, the new home for Canterbury Bankstown District Junior Rugby League Referees Association Inc. NRL SQUAD REPORT

Mr. Adam Gee

The NRL Referees season began back in mid-November 2015. The full squad returned as there were no representative duties at the end of the previous season. This allowed everyone to freshen up and those returning from injuries were able to hit the ground running. The pre-season incorporated fitness testing, strength sessions, theory/video sessions, running, cycling, swimming at good variety of venues. We covered Palm Beach to Cronulla, Parramatta, Homebush and Newcastle where we had a pre-season camp which allowed the part-time and Queensland members to join the full-time squad. The Auckland Nines in early February was the first official duties for the squad. This new concept has been great for the game and its fans, and allows the referees to travel as a full squad and officiate with multiple people over the weekend in a fast-paced environment. The kick-off of the 2016 NRL season saw the launch of ‘The Bunker’. This outstanding piece of technology not only helped the referees on the field at times, but most importantly changed the way we could evaluate our games and be coached. Multiple camera angles and ‘real-time’ reviewing of decisions allowed referees to be more accurately judged and coached around decision making, positioning and communication. There were three debuts as referees throughout the season: • Peter Gough • Jon Stone • Tim Roby

Adam Gee’s achievements: • Since debuting in 2010, Adam has achieved 64 games as a Referee and 42 as a Touch Judge. • Made his debut as a Head Referee in Round 25 • Standby Referee for the first week of the Final Series During the season all Canterbury Members in both Grade & NRL represented the Association with distinction. HON. TREASURERS REPORT

Mr. Gavin Beecroft

It is with pleasure that I submit the 2016 financial accounts to members for the financial year ending 31st October 2016. The past season has been another successful one both on and off the field for our Association. During 2016 we have turned our financial situation around and have now laid the foundations that will enable us to build on in the future. We finished the year in a stronger financial position; the overall result for the 12 months was an increase in equity of $5,390.75. We were able to increase our level of sponsorship from previous seasons. This sponsorship, combined with a number of grants and fundraising efforts ensure that we are well placed to build on our recent successes as we continue on our quest for constant financial improvement. The Association remains extremely appreciative of all of the support provided by our sponsors, without which our many programs and initiatives would not be possible. The support that we receive from our sponsors should never go unnoticed and I would like to start with by firstly acknowledging the continued support from the Canterbury League Club which consists of the Directors and all the members. I encourage all members and friends to support those who support us by utilising their services and products whenever possible. Also, the Canterbury Bankstown Referees’ Association would like to thank the following sponsors for their continued support during the 2016 season. The team consists of: Canterbury League Club – Principle front and back Jersey sponsorship and financial source through grants. Ronnie’s Demolition – Sleeve jersey sponsor and special thanks for providing 95th anniversary cake at our Annual Blue and White Function.

The Association is fortunate that the New South Wales Rugby League Referees’ Association (NSWRLRA) continues to offer great support by making available coaching and development grants as well as the administration grant. We were fortunate to receive the top tier of funding for coaching and development for 2016 from NSWRLRA. The criteria set by NSWRLRA are that these funds need to be used for coaching and development. I report that we fully utilised and have exceeded our coaching and development funding as follows below: Exchange program
