PATRON’S REPORTS SEASON 2017 Dr George Peponis Mr Arthur Coorey

On behalf of Canterbury League Club I congratulate the CBDRLRA on another fantastic year. Canterbury were proud to be the Association’s major sponsor once again in 2017 and we look forward to continuing the relationship in 2018. Rugby League would not function without the work of our dedicated officials and we are pleased that we can play a small part in supporting the referee community in our district. On a personal level I am honoured to have been appointed a patron of the Association in 2017. Having played and administered our great game at all levels I have nothing but the utmost respect for our match day officials and the role the Association plays in not just supporting existing referees but fostering new talent.

Dr George Peponis It is with great pleasure that I once again have the opportunity to write a message for the CBDRLRA Annual Report as Patron. CBDRLRA is an organisation that is integral to the ongoing success of our game, year in, year out. The training, development and support provided for referees in the Canterbury Bankstown District is invaluable from the grassroots of the Junior League competition right through to NSWRL and NRL. I am honoured to be associated with the great work your organisation does and look forward to continuing my relationship with the CBDRLRA in the New Year. To the Committee, staff, members and their families I thank you for the time you give to our game and thank you for your continued support which has made 2017 such a successful year. I hope your holidays and New Year is filled with good health and happiness and look forward to the new season in 2018.

PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD Mr. Paul Archer

As I write this report and reflect on season 2017 it is pleasing to consider the positives that have occurred. We as an Association are most fortunate to have a wonderful group of members, ranging in ages but with one purpose – to ensure that this Association continues to grow in statue. Our active district members have performed well. During the season we saw the retirement from the graded ranks of both Richard Daizli and Mat Damaso. Both Richard and Mat have had distinguished grade careers with several highlights, and what impressed me was how they both continued with their assistance to the district referees’ in 2017 with respective roles dealing with appointments and training. Popular member Nathan Loveday was rewarded following another successful Junior Rep season being elevated to grade status, his perseverance and dedication has paid off and we look forward to good things ahead in his grade career. What can I say about Adam Gee and his 2017! Made one of our youngest ever Life Members, establishing himself as a lead NRL referee and in fact by season end officiating in 3 NRL finals matches and receiving the award as the most improved NRL referee for 2017. He was then included in the World Cup Referees Squad where he had several appointments including a test match in Port Moresby between PNG and USA. Adam was then appointed as referee for the Women’s World Cup Final at Suncorp Stadium. Adam is a credit to himself, his family and has brought much credit to our wonderful Association. Well done Adam and I look forward to more opportunities coming your way in the seasons ahead. It was most pleasing to see Joseph Tesoriero receive the Clubb-Johnson Trophy for being our leading district referee. Other award winners were Aaron McGeoch, Matthew Gomes, Daniel Gardner and Lionel Brown, all well deserved. The Secretary has noted these achievements elsewhere in his report. On our social scene we had a range of experiences, a wonderful Blue and White Cabaret in June and a most disappointing golf day in October, the

5

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Committee is of the view that our traditional golf day has run its race and will be replaced with another activity in 2018. To all our sponsors; Canterbury League Club, BIDEL Group, Ronnies Demolitions, TABCORP Park and MIYO Australia, your continued support is much appreciated. In particular thanks to George Peponis and Arthur Coorey from the League Club, and John Fadel from BIDEL for your dedicated support of CBRA. Without this support from all our sponsors we as an Association could not function to the level we do. We appreciate and acknowledge the financial and administrative support from the NSWRLRA. In 2018 we have some new sponsors coming on board as our first Centenary Sponsors; these will be confirmed at our AGM. We conducted our meetings in the main at the Tennis Club at Punchbowl, a venue which met our needs and we look forward to the opening of the refurbished club in the first quarter of 2018. As you know during the season the Bulldog’s CEO and one of our Patrons, Raelene Castle resigned, I acknowledge the support which Raelene provided to our Association and we look forward to establishing a strong bond with incoming CEO, Andrew Hill. We appreciated the support from the Bulldogs Football Club under the Chairmanship of Ray Dib, the Junior League under Gavin Lawrence and the refereeing departments from both the NSWRL and NRL. A couple of negative notes from season 2017, firstly the death of 2 esteemed Life Members, Jack Harvey and John ‘Sticks’ Leeds, both these men were absolute gentleman and made a significant contribution to CBRA. Unfortunately, due to Jack not being in the best of health and Sticks being located in NZ we have not had the pleasure of their company in recent years. But rest assured that they were always interested in events surrounding the Association. May they rest in peace. As active members are aware the Committee conducted exams on the laws of the game late in the season with disappointing results. The Committee made a tough stand on this and we make no apologies for that, all referees are required to have a sound knowledge of the rules. The Committee has discussed some ideas on how to address this in season 2018. Attendance at training was at times disappointing, the same faces appearing each week for which we are most appreciative. But if you want to improve

6

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

your refereeing skills you need to actively be involved in this great Association, not just turn up on weekends. It is great to observe the bonds of friendship which are being developed within our younger members; it gives me great pride in the Association as we move towards our centenary in 2021 to know that we have a bright future. On the financial front you will note in the financial records within this report that the Association for the second consecutive year is in the ‘black’. This is due to the hard work of the Committee, budgets which are in place on expenditure and in particular I acknowledge the efforts of our Treasurer, Gavin Beecroft. To all Office Bearers thank you for your assistance during 2017, in particular to our Secretary, Daniel Gardner who in his second year in the job has continued to impress. Daniel puts in long hours in his various roles in the Association and does them to a very high standard, thank you Daniel. Finally, as some of you may be aware I was most fortunate at season’s end to have been awarded the ‘Les Matthews’ Award by the NSWRL for my contribution to refereeing in NSW. I was totally shocked to be recognised at the function and was so proud to receive the award named after former CBRA President, Les Matthews. I accepted the award on behalf of all CBRA members who have contributed to the administration of CBRA over the years. I am proud to be your President and attempt to represent you all to the best of my ability. Many thanks to my wife, Kim for her ongoing support to me but also for all that she does for CBRA. Bring on season 2018; hope to see you at the AGM.

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Daniel Gardner

Mr Chairman and Members, I thank the members for allowing me another opportunity to serve as Secretary of such a great Association. I am still learning the role and may make mistakes along the way, but I always will try my best for the Association, and most importantly all of our members, who we as a Committee have a responsibility for. Whilst at times people may be disappointed with the actions undertaken by the Committee, it is always done with the best interests of our members at the forefront. We continue to go from strength to strength as an Association, and with our 100th year celebrations just around the corner (2021) there is exciting times ahead. Once again our Social Committee, lead by Nathan Loveday & Kim Archer, produced many fantastic social events throughout 2017, including our Annual Blue & White Cabaret and Life Members Reunion, both of which were well supported by the members. Congratulations to Adam Gee who became our 84th and youngest ever Life Member at our Blue & White Cabaret. As touched on in the President’s Foreword, Adam had a year to remember and on and off the field, and we as an Association couldn’t be prouder of him. More on Adam’s season can be found further in the report. Our Annual Seminar was held on Sunday 5th March, and was well attended by active members as we prepared for the commencement of the 2017 season. Thanks to Brad Zarb for organising the seminar, and to all members who assisted. The AGM was held on Thursday 9th February at the home of our major sponsor, Canterbury League Club. Paul Archer was elected unopposed as President for his 15th season. Our three patrons for 2017 were Dr George Peponis, Arthur Coorey & Raelene Castle, who all were all grateful in accepting the nomination, and expressed their thanks to the members.

10

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

The only change to the 2016 Committee was Aaron McAndrew being elected as a Committee Member, with Lionel Brown advising he would not return to the role. All other members from the 2016 Committee were re-elected to their respective roles for 2017, Brad Zarb (Vice-President), Gavin Beecroft (Treasurer), Peter Chayna (Assistant Secretary), Nathan Loveday (Social Secretary) and Kim Archer (Committee Member). Sponsorship Canterbury League Club was the Association’s major sponsor once again for 2017, taking the partnership to over 20 years. We are extremely grateful for all the support we receive from the Club, who are always on hand to assist with venues for meetings and social functions, as well as financial support which the members benefit from each season. We look forward to the completion of the Moxon Sports Club in early 2018, allowing us a venue central to most of our membership where we can conduct meetings, seminars etc. Ronnie’s Demolition & Excavation returned as our sleeve sponsor for 2017. Thanks again to Paul & Yvette Hassarati for their continued support of our Association. Both Paul and Yvette regularly attend our meetings and social functions, and will always be welcome at any of our Association functions. Thanks to TABCORP Park Menangle, and in particular Bruce Christison for assisting with all our printing needs, including the Annual Report. Bruce is always willing to assist with our printing, as well as providing a first class venue for our Annual Trot Night. Thanks again Bruce. MIYO Australia returned this season as our gear sponsor. Thanks to Nathan Loveday and his team who ensure we are always stepping out in the best gear possible. Our shorts sponsors, BIDEL Group once again were big supporters of our Association throughout the season. I offer my sincere thanks to John Fadel, Steve Dib and Geoff Dib who have welcomed our Association into the BIDEL Group family with open arms. In exciting news, 2018 will see us welcome our first ‘Centenary Sponsors’ as we head into the Centenary in 2021. Further details will be provided to members at our AGM.

Junior League Season 2017 saw no major changes to the structure of the CBDJRL, with Lindsay Roach once again elected President and Gavin Lawrence continuing in his role as Competition Manager. Thanks to Lindsay, Gavin and the entire staff at CBDJRL for their efforts in not only running a quality competition, but their unwavering support of our referees. The season got off to a wet start with the majority of trial weekends washed out throughout March. This saw a late start to the season (22nd/23rd April), which saw Gala Weekend pushed back to the first weekend in September. The NSWRL changed the format of senior competitions, with our competition being part of the ‘South Western Conference’. This change created more opportunities for our referees as there was senior football (up to u16s) on Saturdays as well as the Sunday competitions. These changes also saw NSWRL employ staff across each region to assist with these competitions. Thanks to Ben James from NSWRL who worked closely with Gavin Lawrence in regards to the South Western Conference. Ben was always happy to assist when needed and was a great support to our referees around the grounds. We were lucky enough to have 24 Grand Finals in total over 2 weekends (12 CBDJRL and 12 Conference). This saw plenty of referees receive opportunities in big matches, and it was pleasing to watch many referees perform to such a high standard. Every member involved in a Grand Final should be extremely proud of their efforts. Special congratulations to Joseph Tesoriero, who refereed the 2 nd Grade Grand Final, that being the highest grade and therefore receiving the Clubb-Johnson Trophy at our Life Member’s Reunion. Joseph has worked extremely hard over the past few seasons, and to finish the #1 referee for Season 2017 was well deserved. Gala Weekend was another enjoyable weekend, with the support shown by our members second to none. At one stage if you were to look across the hill at Belmore Oval, it was a sea of blue CBRA shirts. There is so much more to refereeing then turning up every weekend, and many of our members are enhancing that culture and forging wonderful friendships in the process.

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Membership & Meetings This year the Association held 11 meetings, including the AGM and the average attendance was 43. Meetings were once again held fortnightly on Wednesday nights throughout the season, with one Thursday meeting held to avoid a clash with State of Origin. Whilst the average attendance was 43 which suggests good support of meetings, there were times were numbers were down for various reasons. The Committee is mindful of this, and as such has looked to alter the number and regularity of meetings for Season 2018. The Committee feels meetings are of high importance early in the season where a lot of information is passed on, and late in the season as the competition heads into semis. Therefore, we will have fortnightly meetings in March and August, with monthly meetings inbetween during April, May, June & July. Full list of meeting dates can be found at the end of this report. This season saw us welcome 9 new members to the Association. As always, each of these members received the necessary training and support to ensure they are fully equipped to take the field. We are hopeful the majority of these members will return to referee again in 2018. Training & Development Nathan Loveday once again ran the weekly training sessions for our active members, assisted by Brad Zarb, Mat Damaso and Joseph Tesoriero. Numbers were consistent, but we would like to see more active members attending as this will only benefit them with their refereeing. Nathan has advised he will not be re-nominating for the role of Training Coordinator for 2018, I am sure whoever takes over will follow on from Nathan’s good work and continue to make training enjoyable and beneficial for those attending. Brad Zarb worked hard once again this season on the laws of the game, but unfortunately this wasn’t reflected in the results from some of our active member in the laws quiz. To be blunt, the results submitted were well below what is expected, and this is an area that the Committee will continue to work on to ensure all our referees have a sound knowledge of the laws when officiating. The Committee made the harsh decision to deem some active members ineligible for Semi Finals and Grand Finals as a result of the exams.

13

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

This stance wasn’t taken lightly, but was in the best interests of not only our referees but the players who were to play in these important matches. A combined training session was once again held this year, with our Association playing host to St George & Cronulla Referees. Once again, the turn out and support of this concept was outstanding with Neptune Park almost full to capacity between the 3 Associations. Thanks to all involved in making the night a success, especially some of our non-active members and mothers who cooked the BBQ to feed 80+ hungry referees after a big training session. The Development Squad continued again this season. Nathan Loveday ran this program once again. It was most pleasing to see many members of this squad referee their first Grand Final this year. The knowledge and skills learnt from participating in this squad is invaluable for all involved, and will no doubt benefit them in the long run. Special mention to Mariam Rifaie & Stephanie Penteado who were both part of the NRL Women’s Academy for 2017 and have been going from strength to strength within this squad. Well done ladies, you have done a fine job representing CBRA this season and we are sure more opportunities will come your way. At the time of writing this report, Aaron McGeoch & Michael Tasker were invited to trial with the Junior Rep Squad over the summer, with the hope of being selected for the 2018 squad. We wish you both the best of luck. The NSWRLRA Inter-district Touch Day was held again this year on Sunday 26th November, which we hosted at Vale of Ah Reserve. This day was well supported by most Associations, and both finals saw Canterbury v South Sydney. Unfortunately for us, we lost both finals. Congratulations to South Sydney Referees for winning the double in their first year participating. We look forward to hopefully expanding this concept in 2018 and getting further support from all Associations. Awards Our Life Members Reunion is not only a chance to honour our Life Members and all they have done for our great Association, but also to recognise achievements by members on and off the field during the season. We pride ourselves on having a limited number of awards; such is the prestige of receiving an award each season. All award winners were worthy recipients on

14

the night. Congratulations to you all. Further details on each award and the winner can be found later in the report. • • • • •

Leo Randle Award – Lionel Brown Clubb-Johnson Trophy – Joseph Tesoriero Farrelly-Dick Trophy – Aaron McGeoch Mathews-Styles Award – Matthew Gomes Archer-Garwood Award – Daniel Gardner

Grade – NRL/NSWRL Adam Gee was our lone CBRA representative in the NRL this season, but what a season he had! Adam received many Lead Referee appointments throughout the season, and after some fantastic performances was rewarded with 3 NRL Finals Series matches as Assist Referee. Adam also received the most improved award at the Annual Col Pearce Medal night for the NRL Referees. Adam was then selected in the Match Officials Squad for the World Cup, and reached International Referee status when he was appointed to control the PNG v USA match in Port Moresby during Round 3 of the RLWC. Adam then was appointed to referee a Women’s RLWC Semi-Final at Southern Cross Group Stadium, and topped off his stellar season by refereeing the Final of the Women’s RLWC between Australia v New Zealand, prior to the Men’s Final. On the Graded front, Jimmy Oliveira and Nathan Loveday were both in the Graded Squad this season. Nathan was graded at the conclusion of the Junior Rep Season, and impressed with his short time in grade, receiving a Holden Cup U20s touch line in the first week of the Semi Finals. Special mention to Mat Damaso and Richard Daizli, who both retired from Grade this season after lengthy and successful careers. Both gentlemen represented CBRA well over many years. Thanks to NSWRLRA for their ongoing support of our Association, in particular Chairman Paul Simpkins and Executive Officer Frank Leonard. Frank Leonard announced that 2017 would be his final year as Executive Officer of NSWRLRA. Thank you Frank for all your service over many years, and to Michael Jones

who will take over the role, I wish you the best of luck and look forward to working with you in 2018. Vale Unfortunately this season saw the passing of 2 Life Members in Jack Harvey & John Leeds, both of whom were well liked and will be remembered by many for years to come. Jack Harvey passed away in May this year. Jack joined the Association on the 16th May 1956, becoming a Life Member in 1970. Jack held various roles during his time within the Association, including a season as Vice-President in 1971. John Leeds, or ‘Sticks’ as he was affectionately known, passed away in October 2017. John relocated to New Zealand to reside, which meant we didn’t see him too often, but he continued to follow the Associations affairs regularly sending emails. John was heavily involved in our Association during his time with us, including 13 years as Assistant Secretary (1962-74). John was a member for 63 years, and received Life Membership in 1966. The Association extends its deepest sympathies to the families of those mentioned who we lost throughout the season, as well any member who suffered a loss of a loved one throughout the year. Our thoughts are also with you. SOCIAL Our Social Secretary, Nathan Loveday was ably assisted by his Social Committee once again this season and put on many fantastic social events. We are widely known as the ‘Social Association’ and Nathan and his Committee should be commended for another great season. As mentioned previously by our President, the Golf Day was rather disappointing this season, and as such we will be looking to replace this event for the 2018 calendar. The majority of social functions are subsidised by the Association, and the Committee support all our events. We encourage members to continue attending Social Functions to enjoy the other side of our Association!

16

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

GENERAL Our Annual Exchange Programs were undertaken again this season with Gold Coast Referees & Auckland Referees. Unfortunately due to scheduling the Junior League Exchange with Group 6 was postponed this season. Congratulations to the following members who participated in our exchanges: • Gold Coast Exchange – Peter Chayna & Joshua Mabon • Auckland Exchange – Nick Oustambasidis & Kane Thorburn This year we hosted Matthew Grannis & Nigel Williams from Auckland Referees, and Aaron Wheeler & Brodie Cauchi from Gold Coast Referees. All of them represented their respective Associations extremely well and were a pleasure to host. We hope you enjoyed the weekends as much as we did. Thanks to Karen Bayliss (Gold Coast Secretary) and Steve Jelacic (Auckland Secretary) for all their efforts in facilitating the exchange programs and we look forward to continuing these in 2018. This season we had 2 members in the Junior Rep Squad – Nathan Loveday and Joseph Tesoriero. At the conclusion of the Junior Rep season Nathan Loveday was graded into the NSW Referees Squad. A proud moment for Nathan becoming Graded Member #1004. We wish Nathan well as he begins a new journey in his refereeing career. To finish, I once again want to thank all the members for their support in my second year as Secretary. I continue to learn and more importantly continue to enjoy this role. I am fortunate enough to deal with so many great people within CBRA, and for that, I thank you all. To my fellow committee members, thank you all for your efforts and ensuring the standards we want to set out are upheld. We are an Association with great pride and history, and I am sure this will continue for years to come. To Peter Chayna, my Assistant Secretary, thank you for being there to assist whenever I need. You are always a phone call away and your support is appreciated. Finally, thank you to Paul Archer. Paul has been my greatest support the past 2 seasons, and I would be lost at times without having Paul to chat to. Not only

are you respected by all of us at CBRA, but it seems the greater refereeing community appreciate all you do as well. This much is evident by Paul receiving the ‘Les Matthews Award’ for outstanding contribution to refereeing at the NSWRL Volunteer of the Year Awards. Thanks again mate. See you all at our 2018 AGM.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Nathan Loveday

The 2017 Social Calendar was chock full of good fun and plenty of memories, with the Social Committee ensuring a good time was had by all! Big thanks to my 2IC Kim Archer, who carried us through this year. A lot goes unnoticed and I do thank you a lot Kim but it is well deserved. You do so much, and I truly appreciate all your assistance. To Anthony Harb and Josh Mabon who assisted throughout the year with the raffles and behind the scenes for functions, a big thanks! The social season started with the cricket day back in February! What a glorious day it was at Gordon Parker Reserve. Big thanks to the 26 players that turned up and fought the heat! It was a good day with some highlights including George Elias batting without shoes facing Kane Thorburn charging in off the fence! There were also some controversial umpiring decisions but as always we fully understand that decisions no matter how bad they are need to be made! Who could forget the one-handed screamer from yours truly to dismiss Brad Zarb? There have been many memories and nothing makes most of us happier than seeing the Vice President trudging off after being dismissed from a speccy! The day finished in a 187 run a piece draw! Absolutely amazing scenes taking some of our members back to the glory days of Botham, Border and Lillee being crowded on field by the 4 spectators and a dog that was present to celebrate the draw! Up next the traditional trip to the Trots at Menangle Park! Another stellar night! A packed bus took the trip down the M5 to the picturesque venue! The food was great, the company was better and the drinks (both alcoholic and non alcoholic) went down a treat! It was another good night had. As always, I encourage members and families within our Association to attend. It is a cracking night! One disappointment was Ray Payne was unable to get another $81 winner.... He managed to pull off a quinella that paid $57 which was pretty handy... for himself anyway!

19

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

I think our very own President had a handy night from memory; although Kim was telling me it was actually all her tips which wasn’t a surprise! By the end of the night it was a tired crew headed back past Revesby Workers, some kicked on, some went straight to bed. Either way another top night was had by all! Our signature event, the Blue and White Cabaret saw 128 people enter the Blueberry Hill room for another cracker of an evening. Big congratulations to Adam Gee who was presented with a well deserved Life Membership to add to his already glowing list of achievements. We were lucky to have our regular DJ back and Jimmy didn't let anyone down with the regular tunes keeping everyone on the dance floor nice and sweaty but still grooving. This has and always will be our Premier Event on the Social Calendar. Doesn't matter how much is written in this column for the readers, the simple facts are, if you haven't been you need to go! It’s also a night where we give thanks to all those special ladies that put up with us on a weekly basis with our swings in moods because of appointments, training or just a certain player! 2018 will be a bigger and better so start planning your tables now! We were fortunate enough to host the Inter-Association combined training session! I want to give great thanks to Barry Belford, Joe Attard, Lionel Brown, Ian Butler, Deanne Gomes & Kim Archer for their above and beyond effort on the BBQ and to organise and ensure it was a tip top feed! Big thanks the NSWRLRA for the opportunity to host and to any volunteer that assisted to make this night a smooth one! We put on an awesome show and it put our Association in the spot light and we handled it with class! The Life Members Reunion was another fantastic night. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all the award winners! Joseph Tesoriero on his well deserved 1st Clubb-Johnson Trophy. It wasn't easy to hand this award over but a big congrats to you for your hard work and commitment! Aaron McGeoch who showed great improvement and with the commitment needed was awarded the most improved for 2017! A big future ahead for you mate, it’s all in your hands!

20

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

Matty Gomes! What a year! Showed what happens when you enjoy what you do. You killed this year mate and there’s an enormous future for you if you keep the smile on your face and keep enjoying it! To the sheriff Lionel Brown; congrats on the Leo Randle Award mate. All those years of service absolutely outstanding and amazing achievement! To my good friend Gards on the Archer-Garwood Award, just a clear reflection of the time and effort you put into the Association! Well done mate! There was also a special presentation to Bidel Group for their contribution to our Association. Big thanks to John, Steve and Geoff for all their support of not only me personally which was greatly appreciated but to the Association! There comes a time where things become old and outdated and it seems the Golf Day reached this stage in 2017. We had a lot of late pull outs and no shows which will signal the end of the Golf Day. For many years this has been an awesome social event but it has started to decline the last 2-3 years. Big thanks to Cliff Haynes, Col Turnell & Peter Longhurst for their awesome support of this day and assisting with the scorecards over many moons. The end of an era no doubt but who knows what the future holds! It is with slight sadness that I am writing this report for the last time for the time being. It is time to move on from this role and 2017 was my final year as Social Secretary. It’s been an awesome learning experience and this role has given me an opportunity to learn so much about the Association and to see how the hard work behind the scenes culminates into the social nights and functions. It’s been an enjoyable ride and I have appreciated the support of Gavin Beecroft and Glenn Jeffcoat who helped me so much in the early years. To Kim Archer who as mentioned above has been the rock of the Social Committee over a number of years! Thanks so much! To all those who have been on the Social Committee over the years thanks for working with me to make so many great memories! To all those who have assisted with BBQ's over the years most mentioned above! You are the reason we are such a great Association, the first people to put their hands up without even being asked! You are the backbone and it is all appreciated.

To my girlfriend Karissa who has put up with my mood swings over the last 2 years depending on numbers, pull outs and just anything that can go wrong! A big thank you! To the current President Paul, a big thanks for all your support. You are always a phone call away whether it is social functions, issues at the last minute or anything else that happens; thanks for being there! To all members, can I please encourage you to keep supporting the events that are put on, you don't understand how much efforts goes into it and also the happiness it brings to see successful functions and our Association achieving great heights socially! DIRECTOR OF REFEREE’S REPORT Mr. Richard Daizli

The Director’s role was once again split between junior games (Under 5 to Under 12s) and senior games (Under 13s to Opens). Special thanks to Daniel Gardner, Kim Archer and Dennis Quin for appointing the junior games and their assistance in preparing the younger referees to their progression to senior football. To Wayne Loveday, I offer my appreciation for his assistance as assistant director for senior games and his valuable input into evaluating performance of referees. Season 2017 was a successful year where referees consistently performed strongly and were rewarded by officiating in higher grades than they had previously done. Some did their first grand finals and others got their first taste of senior football. It was a year of development and a number of referees were able to stand up to the challenge and perform strongly. The year started with a number of wet weekends which restricted the trials to just one week of football for referees to brush off the cobwebs. We had a number of new referees join us this year and hopefully they enjoyed the season and will remain with us for future years. With Gold divisions for 14, 15 and 16s moving to Saturdays, this stretched our resources in terms of covering touchlines for all games. Hopefully the new referees will be able to start running some touchlines next year in these grades to further their experience I would like to thank those referees who constantly would travel between grounds on Saturdays to fulfill these appointments. This year, up and coming referees were given the opportunity to test themselves in higher grades and it was pleasing to see their rapid development and strong performances. Although this was not popular with all members, we as an association have the obligation to give potential referees every opportunity possible to reach the next level. Credit must go to Nathan Loveday for his work with the development squad as most of the referees in this squad improved immensely by the end of the year

24

and were rewarded with finals and grand finals. Challenges we continually have is the number of games we have over any given weekend which can result in referees changing grades over consecutive weekends. It was pleasing to hear that Michael Tasker and Aaron McGeoch have been invited to train with the Junior Representative squad. Both individuals showed rapid improvement over the year and have put in the extras to be given the opportunity to progress their careers. We also had Josh Mabon, Mariam Rifaie and Ramzi Daizli invited to the Emerging Squad and hopefully they will progress to Junior Reps next year. There are a number of promising referees who will hopefully get the chance to impress next year. The Association has a bright future and with the correct guidance, many more will reach higher honours. Put that extra effort in and you may be rewarded. Thank you to all advisory board members, including senior active referees who gave up their time to assess referees every week and pass on their advice to help develop all referees. With the high number of young referees we currently have, this will be even more important next year. There are a number of referees who will be ready to start officiating in senior football in 2018 and it is important that they are assessed to ensure they are ready. Congratulations to all referees who officiated in Grand Finals. We had a mix of experience officiating with a number of young referees controlling their first senior grand finals. Having watched all games, our referees performed strongly and showed great professionalism. Congratulations to Joseph Tesoriero for receiving the Clubb Johnson Trophy. Joseph had a strong season and he was rewarded for his consistency and maturity in controlling the Opens Grades. Congratulations to Aaron McGeoch for receiving the John Farrelly-Reg Dick Trophy for most improved referee of the year. His persistance and willingness to learn saw him control Under 19s games by the end of the year and was outstanding in the finals series. Thank you to the executive board for their support during the year and understanding during some testing times. Also special thanks to Gavin Lawrence and the district club for their support throughout the year.

LEO RANDLE TRUST REPORT Mr. Paul Archer

Trustees for 2017: Paul Archer (Chair), Brad Zarb, Daniel Gardner, Peter Longhurst & Adam Gee. During the current calendar year the Trustees held the required 3 meetings. The Trustees sought legal advice regarding an updated Trust Deed which has been finalised and we are currently in discussions with the ATO regarding retaining the Trust as a tax exempt entity. We have been most fortunate to have had tax exemption for the past 9 years but this appears unlikely in the future. I wish to place on record our appreciation in particular to Peter Longhurst and Ian Butler (financial advisor) for their ongoing administrative support to the Trust. The Trustees approved a total of $6,386.30 be reimbursed to the Association in 2017, a breakup being: • • • •

Legal Fees (New Deed) Exchange Programs Communication Gear Official Gear

$939.44 $3939.52 $784.00 $723.34

The Trust balance continues to be in a very healthy state which will meet the requirements of the Association moving forward and will assist in some expenditure aspects of our Centenary in 2021.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT REPORT Mr. Nathan Loveday

Season 2017 will be seen as a really positive step forward for the Development Squad with plenty of opportunity and plenty of success. Training on the other hand had inconsistent numbers, but on the whole the average of 22 active members hopefully saw them continue to improve. With the assistance of Steve Clark from the NRL and Steve Clapson from NSWRLRA, our development squad members were used as Touch Judges and Referees throughout the GIO Schoolboy Cup. Anthony Harb refereed a game throughout, whilst Mariam Rifaie, Matthew Gomes, Joshua Mabon, Aaron McGeoch, Aaron McAndrew & Michael Tasker all officiated as Touch Judges. A couple even got their melons on TV! Thanks to Clarky & Clappo for allowing these opportunities. The Schoolboy Cup remains a very prestige competition and there is always room to develop in these games and it was very nice to be able to give our members the opportunity to be a part of it. In the district we saw all members in the squads referee in their highest divisions, including some moving into the Opens Category and also gaining some very good Semi Final and Grand Final appointments. There are plenty of positives within this squad, with some good youth that are willing to learn and have the "whatever it takes" attitude. If this can continue throughout then I have no doubt we will have some further Junior Rep/Graded referees in the future. There was a lot to adapt to this year and challenges thrown down in regards to the 1 and 2 step vocab and positioning which we followed through the National Structure. This will continue to be a work in progress for this squad but if there is strong commitment then no doubt progress will be made to higher levels. There is still some work to do with attitudes and ensuring that the will to go further is there. Commitment at times from some was questionable; luckily there is time on their side. All have the ability it’s just a questions of the 1% that no one else knows about. This is the true test to the hunger.

29

CBDRLRA Inc. 96th Annual Report & Financial Statement

We were fortunate enough to have 2 of our Development members asked to train with Junior Reps. Aaron McGeoch and Michael Tasker have been training since early November and have shown some promise. We have also had Mariam Rifaie, Joshua Mabon & Ramzi Daizli involved with the Emerging Squad with NSW Referees with the hope to be offered a position in reps with another good season locally! I am very proud of what this squad has achieved this year, the structure and members involved will continue to be looked at by the Committee and there will be some slight changes in 2018! In regards to training I want to take the time to thank Brad Zarb, Mat Damaso, Joey Tesoriero, Barry Ruttle & Wayne Loveday for their assistance throughout the year. It’s good to have the experience we do within the Association. Mat Damaso joined the trainers later in the year and brought plenty of energy and drills to continue the improvement. I am sure it gets mentioned every year and in every report, but to the active members that do not attend it DOES affect on field performance. For those battling away in low grades wondering how you can change, it's simple; get to training and learn from those that have done plenty before you. Season 2018 will hopefully see an increased attendance and we hope that the structures in place and also the variety can ensure numbers are positive and the opportunity to learn is there.

COACHING COORDINATOR’S REPORT Mr. Lionel Brown

The 2017 season saw a drop of new members from twenty (20) in 2016, to nine (9) this year. But as always the Association continues to attract good quality people. As always the challenge for us is to provide all the referees with the education, self confidence and support to progress to higher levels within our game of rugby league. At present The Quiz Master Brad Zarb and his team are doing a great job on that front. This year, Balmain Referees Association conducted an NRAS Level 2 Face to Face Course, which they kindly granted access to all Associations who wished to nominate candidates. Canterbury took advantage of their offer with five (5) members attending. This course was held at the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club with Tony Beger from Balmain as the Senior Provider. The following Referee gained NRAS Level 5 Accreditation in 2017: • Adam GEE officiated in the World Cup Match, Papua New Guinea V United States of America at Port Moresby, on 12 November 2017. NRL SQUAD REPORT Mr. Adam Gee

Once again an NRL season has come and gone in the blink of an eye, not without the usual controversies that always surround Referees and our great game! The 2017 season began back in mid November 2016, with a great deal of variety in our training/venues with more of a focus on off-legs style training pre - Christmas. We all undertook a new style of fitness test incorporating bike intervals, rower intervals and the grinder machine to really push us to maximum lactate threshold....this certainly did test us! We all came together again in early January for a camp out at Forbes. With the great assistance and generosity of the Norrie family and their farm, we embarked on a seven hour day full of varying physical and mental challenges, whilst battling the 35 degree heat. Come February we began to enjoy some footy again when the Auckland Nines were on and trials began. The beginning of the NRL season saw the retirements of Jared Maxwell (271 games) and Adam Devcich (131 games). During the season the NRL Referees were able to attend some coaching and development initiatives nationwide, which are being introduced due to the new National Structure. It also saw the Referees support the new ‘Beanies for Brain Cancer’ initiative in round 11. Some debuts that took place this year include: • • • • •

34

Round 21 Referee - Ziggy Przeklasa-Adamski Round 3 Touch Judge - Michael Gordon Round 11 Touch Judge – Chris McMillan Round 14 Touch Judge – Jarrod Cole Round 18 Touch Judge – Chris Treneman

Other Major achievements this year were Gavin Badger and Ben Cummins reaching 300 games within the same month. This is a very rare occurrence and an outstanding Milestone to reach. This is a true testament to their tireless dedication, sacrifice and commitment. Bernard Sutton and Luke Patten also reached 300 games, each in the Bunker, a true benefit from being able to officiate games from a central location and testament to their work ethic for a sometimes thankless job. Other Milestones include: • • • •

200 games - Gerry Sutton and Alan Shortall 150 games - Nick Beashel and Michael Wise 100 games - David Ryan and Grant Atkins 50 games - Chris Sutton and Belinda Sleeman

The end of the NRL season saw a few more retirements: • • • • •

Shane Rehm (29 NRL Games) Anthony Elliott (35 NRL Games) Adam Reid (196 NRL Games) Jason Walsh (226 NRL Games) Russell Turner (429 NRL Games).

Special mention to Russell Turner who finished his career with an outstanding record, and 400+ NRL appointments. In early October, the annual Col Pearce Medal Awards Night was held at the Establishment Hotel Sydney. A great night was had by all, which saw Matt Cecchin receive his first Col Pearce Medal, a just reward for an outstanding season. Other reward recipients included: • • • •

Clubman of the Year - Henry Perenara Touch Judge of the Year – Nick Beashel Emerging Squad Referee of the Year – Jarrod Cole Most Improved Referee – Adam Gee

October also saw NRL squad members join Kiwi and English Referees in camp in Brisbane for the World Cup. This was the first time the Referees had been treated like players and placed in a camp environment, with access to first class facilities for the six weeks. We have to thank the organisers and

committee of the RLWC, along with Tony Archer and the rest of the coaching staff for allowing this to take place and set future standards for International Officiating. I am sure all who viewed and took an interest in the World Cup witnessed how successful the tournament was and really brought International Rugby League alive again. It was a privilege and wonderful experience for all involved to get to know each other and learn from each other’s experiences in the varying hemispheres. Every hosting city or country had a vibe and sense of enthusiasm for the game...especially in PNG! Finally, I would like to personally take this opportunity to congratulate Richard Daizli and Mat Damaso on their wonderful graded careers after announcing their retirements during the season. I am sure both of you will continue to play a large part in this wonderful association. I would also like to congratulate Nathan Loveday on a highly successful season and becoming a graded member. Bigger things to come for you in the future Nathan! On behalf of all the Canterbury active graded members I would like to once again thank the Association for its unwavering support of all of us. It is much appreciated.
