PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD Mr. Paul Archer

Season 2018 was the Association’s 97th year and a year with some notable achievements, for the third year in a row with having returned a surplus in operating costs, but some of this surplus is earmarked for our Centenary Fund. It is important for the Association to be prudent in the manner in which we operate our expenditure, these are the member’s funds and the Committee takes this responsibility very seriously. Life Member and NRL squad member Adam Gee has firmly established himself as a first grade referee, moving past the 100 game mark during season 2018. Our last similar success was Life Member Matt Hewitt who achieved in excess of 70 first grade centres. Adam repeated his effort from 2017 and was appointed to 3 NRL final fixtures, performing well. Congratulations, Adam on a wonderful season and we all look forward to following your NRL career in the years ahead. Our other graded members, Nathan Loveday and Jimmy Oliveira both had final appointments in the lower grades, well done guys! On the district front we had in the main a controversy free season, several new members and others who all performed well. The Secretary and I attended all district grand finals over several weekends in August and September and all of our members, both in the centre and on the line performed to the highest standard, bringing much credit to themselves and to CBRA. Our number one referee for the second year was Joey Tesoriero, a match Joey will remember for many years! Other award winners for season 2018 were: Jake Kolesnyk (Farrelly-Dick Trophy), Anthony Ibrahim (Matthew-Styles Award) and Brad Zarb (Archer-Garwood Award). The Leo Randle Award for 2018 was Life Member and current Director of Referees’ Richard Daizli. Congratulations to all these members. The Junior League saw previous Manager Gavin Lawrence depart and his replacement Nathan Mairleitner commenced after the start of the season. Whilst we were sorry to lose Gavin it must be said that we have established a very close working relationship with Nathan. He has introduced initiatives and

is a strong supporter of CBRA. I look forward to working with Nathan for the betterment of our Association and the Junior League. As you know some major changes occurred during the elections at both the League and Football Clubs in early 2018. Firstly, can I place on record my appreciation to former Board members in particular Dr George Peponis and Arthur Coorey for their support over a lengthy period, best wishes to them for the future, we do not forget our friends! The newly elected Boards of both the League and Football club are congratulated on their elections and have indicated strong support to CBRA. We were fortunate to have Football Club Chair, Lynne Anderson and Board member Chris Anderson attend a meeting and feedback received indicated they were impressed in how we operate. Another Football Board member, John Khoury attended both a meeting and social events during the year and we have developed a very good working relationship with John. At the League Club, two gentlemen well known to members were elected, George Coorey as Chairman and Peter Winchester. Both George and Peter have been supportive of CBRA for a number of years and have always been ready to assist whenever needed. Well done to all members’ of the League and Football Club Boards. Newly appointed CEO of the Football Club, Andrew Hill was nominated and accepted one of the roles as a Patron of CBRA, Andrew attended a meeting and social event and I am sure that in the years ahead we will continue with the long standing tradition of friendship between our respective organisations. On the sponsorship front, we are most fortunate to have for the 22 nd year Canterbury League as our major sponsor, sleeve sponsor was Ronnies Demolitions, short sponsors were BIDEL Group, and also we had Club Menangle as our printing sponsor and MIYO as gear provider. It is most pleasing to advise that these sponsorships will remain for season 2019 with the exception of our short sponsor BIDEL whose 3 year agreement has expired. To John Fadel, Steve and Geoff Dib thank you for your support for the past 3 years. I am most pleased to announce that a short sponsorship agreement for the 2019 -21 seasons has been signed with DeVel Company associated with Geoff and Steve Dib. This ongoing support from the Dib brothers is very much appreciated and in my discussions with them they have advised me that they are very impressed with CBRA’s administration and values and friendship

displayed by you, the members! I acknowledge the support from both the NSWRLRA, NSWRL and NRL for both financial and administrative assistance. Whilst on sponsorship, we had two Centenary sponsors in 2018, SONETA Plumbing and Cleanrite Sydney, both these companies are signed up until 2021.Thanks to Buddy Semrani, Steve and Geoff Dib for this show of support. Joining these companies in 2019 as both the Association ‘flag’ sponsor but also a Gold Centenary Sponsor is BANKSTOWN RSL. We look forward to building a strong bond between the RSL and CBRA in the years ahead. BANKSTOWN RSL opens a brand new club in early 2019 and I encourage members to support it. Canterbury League has also come on board as our premier Centenary Sponsor signing up for 2019 – 21. The continued support from Canterbury League is outstanding and I am confident it will continue for many years to come. We do not take our sponsors for granted but continue to ensure that our Association is one built on friendship, integrity and community to make our sponsors proud to be associated with CBRA. We are on the countdown to our Centenary year in 2021, the Centenary Committee has been planning, sponsorships are in place, venues for our Gala Centenary dinner are being reviewed, other social events under consideration and our history sub-committee has commenced some draft planning. My appreciation to all members of the Centenary Committee for your efforts. CBRA is widely known as the social Association, we had some excellent socials during 2018, The Trot night had a record attendance, our annual Blue and White function had 120, all to witness popular member John Maarbani received his life member’s blazer. Well done to John who has made a significant contribution to CBRA over several decades. Life Member’s night was a popular night with many life members in attendance. Our annual golf day was replaced with an indoor sports afternoon. Numbers were disappointing but those that attended seemed to enjoy the activity. The Committee is reviewing some aspects of our social functions for 2019, whilst our functions have always been well attended, I believe it is time for a renewal of some of our formats for functions. The Committee shall announce some changes to our social calendar at the AGM. Further, we conducted our second Development Camp in Corrimal in November, mainly funded by the Leo Randle Trust. Again, numbers were down

but what a great weekend, great guest speakers, in particular the session by Jared Maxwell who explained the ‘bunker’ and then several members had the opportunity to role play as a video ref. Many thanks to all involved in the camp, the spirit is well and truly alive within CBRA, we have a bright future but those active members who do not get involved are missing out, we need you to attend training, meetings, socials. Try it, I guarantee you will enjoy the activities that we have to offer. You need to be committed to all that CBRA has to offer! In conclusion, many thanks to all the office bearers who work so hard to ensure the Association runs smoothly, to my wife Kim you amaze me with how keen you are, now Social Secretary, assist with junior appointments and assess at least each fortnight during the season. More importantly you strive to make me a better person, a difficult task I know, but I could not do this role without your support. Thank you! To you, the members of this great Association, I enjoy my role although at times challenges arise we deal with them to the best of our ability. I have friendships over 4 decades with members of CBRA, I treasure these but the friendships I have formed since my return as your President 3 years ago are important to me, you are keeping me young, still grumpy but young! Thanks. Our Secretary, Gard’s, in his third year continues to grow in this vital role. An impressive young man who is dedicated to his various positions within CBRA, doesn’t complain when I might disagree with him on a matter. The Association is in safe hands with our Secretary, a position I trust he will hold for many years to come. Many thanks my friend, you make my job much easier with your professionalism. Enjoy the upcoming season, see you at the AGM.

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Daniel Gardner

Mr Chairman and Members, Season 2018 was another successful season on and off the field for our Association as we continue to build towards our Centenary celebrations in 2021. I echo comments by Paul Archer in his President’s Foreword in regards to the ‘vibe’ within the Association. So many friendships are blossoming within the CBRA, and it is exciting to see where we are heading as an Association. Nothing pleases me more than turning up to a meeting or social function and seeing younger members socialising with Life Members and vice versa. Being a part of this Association WILL make you a better person. As always, our social side of the Association grew from strength to strength again in 2018. This season saw Kim Archer take the reigns as Social Secretary, working alongside a fresh Social Committee consisting of Anthony Harb, Stephanie Penteado and Nathan Fayad. Well done to all involved in coordinating all social functions. We are known as the ‘Social Association’ and this tag certainly fit the bill again in 2018. It would be remiss of me not to mention outgoing Social Secretary Nathan Loveday. Nathan juggled this role for many years with various other roles as well as his on field commitments. Nathan instigated many new initiatives during his tenure and we as an Association appreciate all his efforts in this area. Our Annual Seminar was held on Saturday 24th March and was followed by our first Saturday Feast for the season. The seminar was once again well attended, with plenty of information given to our active members in the lead up to the 2018 season. Thanks to Gavin Beecroft and Aaron McAndrew for their efforts in preparing and running the seminar. Thanks also to Steve Clapson and Jim Harding from NSWRLRA for presenting at our Seminar at late notice, as well as Gavin Lawrence (CBDJRL) and Michael Hanratty (NSWRL). The AGM was held on Thursday 22nd February at the home of our major sponsor, Canterbury League Club.

11

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

Paul Archer was elected unopposed as President for his 3rd consecutive season, and 16th overall. The members elected Dr George Peponis, Andrew Hill and Lynne Anderson as Patrons for the 2018 season. All three were appreciative of the nominations and gratefully accepted the role. A few changes occurred within the make-up of the 2018 Committee. Brad Zarb chose not to re-nominate for the role of Vice-President, with Nathan Loveday being elected unopposed. Kim Archer accepted the role of Social Secretary, with Hilton Wood coming on board as a Committee Member. All other positions from Season 2017 remained the same. I wish to thank all the Committee for their efforts during the 2018 season. Sponsorship Canterbury League Club was the Association’s major sponsor once again for 2018, taking our partnership to 22 years. Whilst a new board was elected in early 2018, our relationship with the club continued to be strong. We are thankful for the support we receive from the club, not only financially but also the friendships we have built up. The Board regularly attend our social functions and are always more than happy to support our Association in any way possible. In exciting news, Canterbury League Club have agreed to come on board as ‘Platinum Centenary Sponsors’ for our Centenary Celebrations in 2021. We cannot thank the club enough for this generosity. Ronnie’s Demolition & Excavation returned as our sleeve sponsor for 2018. Paul & Yvette Hassarati have been a mainstay of our Association through sponsorship for many years. Not only are we appreciative of the financial support we receive through sponsorship, but the friendship built up between both Paul and Yvette with many of our members is something beyond any expectations of a sponsor. We cannot thank you enough! Thanks again to Club Menangle and in particular Bruce Christison. Bruce always ensures our Annual Report is printed and prepared in time for our AGM, whilst also continuing to provide a first class venue for our Annual Trots Night, which has become a well anticipated function on our Social Calendar. MIYO Australia continued to provide high quality gear for our members throughout the season. Many thanks to Nathan Loveday and his team.

12

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

BIDEL GROUP were once again our shorts sponsors for 2018. The support received from John Fadel, Steve Dib and Geoff Dib was overwhelming and much appreciated. Unfortunately, BIDEL GROUP will no longer be sponsoring the Association, with their agreement expiring at the end of 2018. When one door closes, another opens and this saying rings true, with the signing of DeVel as ‘shorts sponsors’ for the next 3 seasons (2019-2021). Thanks to Steve and Geoff Dib for this generous offer to continue their relationship with our Association through DeVel. This season saw our first ‘Centenary Sponsors’ come on board leading into 2021. • SONETA PLUMBING • CLEANRITE SYDNEY Many thanks to Steve and Geoff Dib (SONETA PLUMBING) and Buddy Semrani (CLEANRITE SYDNEY) for these sponsorships, ensuring our Centenary celebrations will be a wonderful event. We welcomed both companies and associated parties on board with open arms, and have built up strong relationships with all involved, which we hope will only grow in the years to come. Towards the back end of the season we were fortunate to sign an agreement with BANKSTOWN RSL who will be coming on board as flag sponsors as well as ‘Gold Centenary Sponsors’. Many thanks to Hilton Wood for his efforts in gaining this sponsorship. We look forward to welcoming BANKSTOWN RSL on board and working closely with Scott Dickson and his team. Junior League At the 2018 Junior League AGM, Wayne Oxford was elected as President, taking over from Lindsay Roach. Thanks to Lindsay for his support of the referees during his time as President. Midway through the season, Gavin Lawrence announced he would be departing the Junior League and the search was on for a replacement. After an exhaustive process, Nathan Mairleitner was appointed by the Football Club to take over as General Manager of the CBDJRL. As mentioned by Paul, we were

13

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

disappointed to see Gavin go, me personally as I had a wonderful relationship with Gavin and his support of the referees was always strong. After meeting with Nathan in his first week, it was evident to see his passion and dedication to the task at hand, and in the 6 months since, he has been a breath of fresh air for the Junior League. There have been many new initiatives introduced and the relationship between our Association and the Junior League continues to be strong, and more importantly a positive, working relationship. Nathan attended our end of season camp held in Corrimal in November, and updated our members on some changes for the 2019 season. There were also changes made at NSWRL level throughout the season, with Ben James leaving his post within Canterbury to take up a position in the Manly/Norths Region. Many thanks to Ben for his support in his time looking after the Canterbury District. Mo Fajajo was appointed to replace Ben. Many members would know Mo being a former member and former Graded/NRL Official. Mo has been a pleasure to work with and I look forward to continuing this relationship in the 2019 season. The season was once again capped off with 3 wonderful weekends of Grand Finals. It was pleasing to watch every Grand Final and see so many referees officiate in their first Grand Final. The development of many of our younger members was evident, and it is exciting to know we are in good hands in the years to come. Congratulations to Joseph Tesoriero who refereed the ‘OPENS GOLD’ Grand Final, thus receiving the Clubb-Johnson Trophy for the 2nd consecutive year. Gala Weekend was another highlight for the season, with the support shown to members second to none. We continue to set the bar and I commend all members for their efforts over the weekend. The decision to return to ‘Wally and Ozzies’ Pizza for our Gala Night Feast was also well supported by the members. Membership & Meetings This year the Association held 8 meetings, including the AGM and the average attendance was 41.

14

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

Meetings were scaled back this year to monthly during the season. The Committee had discussed this issue for many years prior to making the decision to change from fortnightly meetings, and this decision seems to have been well supported by the members. With social media and email in this current climate, fortnightly meetings became unattainable and an effort was made to have guest speakers at the majority of meetings throughout the season which was well received by the membership. In positive news for our Association we welcomed 9 new referees to our ranks during 2018 (Jack Bird, Jack Flaherty, Alaa Lababidi, Jack McIlvenny, Alexander Passarelli, Samson Mairi & Yeyha Abdul-Al) . Our Association makes a conscious effort to ensure all new members feel welcome and a part of the CBRA family. It is most pleasing to see a lot of our new members embracing the culture of the Association, and attending training and social functions. We are hopeful of retaining all of these members heading into 2019. Training & Development This season saw a different approach to training, with Mat Damaso taking over as Co-ordinator. Mat ensured the sessions varied throughout the year and numbers were consistent on most occasions. As always, we encourage all active members to make an effort to attend training each week. Whilst these sessions aren’t compulsory, the experience and knowledge passed on is invaluable. The Annual Combined Training Session between Canterbury, St George & Cronulla took place again this season, with St George hosting the night at Peakhurst Park. Another wonderful turnout from all 3 Associations made for another great night. Thanks to NSWRLRA and NRL Referees for their assistance with this night, and a big thank you to Joel Mani and St George for all their efforts on the night. The Development Squad continued again this season with a smaller group of member’s talent identified to participate. The focus on this squad is to enable the members involved every opportunity to progress through the levels of refereeing not only within Canterbury but into Junior Reps and Grade. It is pleasing to note that at the conclusion of the 2018 season we had 3 members invited to trial for the 2019 Junior Rep Squad (Anthony Harb, Mariam Rifaie, Ramzi Daizli) as well as 2 members participating in the NRL Emerging Referees

15

Academy (Nathan Fayad and Stephanie Penteado). All 5 of these members have come through the Development Squad system within Canterbury and it is great to see rewards for their effort. We wish them all the best heading into the 2019 season. Awards Our Life Member’s Reunion was another fantastic night. Not only was it a chance to reflect on another successful season on and off the field, but more importantly it is a night to recognise the achievements of the lifeblood of or Association – our Life Members! Congratulations to all award winners on the night, who were all worthy recipients. Further details on each award winner can be found later in the report. • • • • •

Leo Randle Award – Richard Daizli Clubb-Johnson Trophy – Joseph Tesoriero Farrelly-Dick Trophy – Anthony Ibrahim Mathews-Styles Award – Jake Kolesnyk Archer-Garwood Award – Brad Zarb

Grade – NRL/NSWRL Adam Gee continued to fly the CBRA flag in the NRL ranks in 2018. Adam has gone from strength to strength each season, and in Round 8 of this year he officiated his 100th NRL match as a referee. This is a wonderful achievement by Adam, and a testament to his hard work and dedication for many years. One of the most pleasing aspects is seeing Adam still continue to put so much back into the Association whilst managing his NRL career. He is often at meetings giving advice to younger referees who have similar ambitions. Jimmy Oliveira and Nathan Loveday both enjoyed another season within the NSWRL Graded Squad, with both gaining Semi Final appointments, and Nathan capping off his 2nd season in Grade with a Grand Final Appointment – Sydney Shield In-Goal Judge. Well done! Thanks to NSWRLRA for their ongoing support of our Association for another season, in particular Paul Simpkins and Peter Filmer, who took over as Executive Officer very early into Season 2018. Also thanks to Gavin Badger in

16

his role with NSWRL as Referee Development Officer for his support throughout the season. Vale The year got off to a sad note, with the news of the passing of Gwen Ellis, mother of Life Member Kim Archer and member John Ellis. In May we lost a big supporter of our Association, with the passing of Ghazi Yarak, father of member Joey Yarak. Ghazi was well known throughout the Association and always had a smile on his face when attending the grounds to support his son. Further sad news was to follow with the passing of Patricia Hughes, mother of Garry Hughes. Garry is an Honorary Member for Life of our Association, and has been a big supporter for many, many years. In October, we were shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Andrew McGeoch, father of member Aaron McGeoch. Aaron is a wonderful young man who has grown in leaps and bounds in his time as a member of our Association, and I have no doubt Andrew played a vital role in shaping Aaron into the impressive young man he has become. Unfortunately the sad news wasn’t to end there, with the passing of member John Steven in late December. John or ‘beach ball’ as he was affectionately known to many members joined our Association on the 18th May 1988 and passed away after a lengthy battle with illness. The Association extends its deepest sympathies to the families of those mentioned who we lost throughout the season, as well any member who suffered a loss of a loved one throughout the year. Our thoughts are also with you. SOCIAL As mentioned previously, Kim Archer had her first season as Social Secretary this year. Kim was assisted by her Social Committee who ensured all functions were well prepared and more importantly well attended. The Golf Day was replaced this year with an Indoor Sports Day, which was unfortunately poorly attended.

17

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

The majority of social functions are heavily subsidised by the Association, and we continue to encourage all members to support these functions and support your Association to enjoy all that we have to offer. As times change, we as an Association have to change, and whilst some Social Functions continue to be well attended and popular, others have attracted less interest, and the Committee, in working with the Social Committee will continue to discuss all possible options for Social Functions. More on this to follow in early 2019. GENERAL Our Association once again participated in Exchange Programs with Gold Coast, Auckland and Group 6 Referees. These programs continue to reward members who have showed continual commitment to the Association. Congratulations to the following members who participated in our exchanges: • Gold Coast Exchange – Kim Archer, Pierre Gerges & Mariam Rifaie • Auckland Exchange – Gavin Beecroft & Anthony Harb • Group 6 (Junior League) – Nathan Fayad & Matthew Gomes Whilst our members enjoyed their travels, we were lucky enough to host the following referees, who all represented their Associations with distinction and were a pleasure. • Gold Coast Referees – Blake Gittins & Barclay McGain • Auckland Referees – Simon Tasker and Raima Koti • Group 6 Referees – Jackson Rye & Jack Simpson Thanks to Eddie Gale (Gold Coast Secretary), Corey Jull (Auckland Secretary) and Ray Dwyer (Group 6 Secretary) for all their efforts in facilitating these exchange programs and we look forward to continuing these in 2019. This season we had 4 members in the Junior Rep Squad – Joseph Tesoriero, Aaron McGeoch, Michael Tasker and Jack Bird (who transferred from Illawarra due to work circumstances). All 4 members represented Canterbury well throughout the season, with Michael Tasker enjoying a fine first season, culminating in being appointed Touch Judge for the Tarsha Gala Grand Final.

18

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

To conclude, I once again wish to thank all the members for their support throughout the season. It is an honour to be Secretary of such a wonderful Association, and whilst I am still active and do get a lot enjoyment out of being out on the field refereeing, I take great pride in being able to represent ALL of our members as Secretary and ensuring we continue to set the standards on and off the field. I will make mistakes along the way, but these are lessons learned and I will continue to learn whilst ever I have the opportunity to fulfil this role. To Peter Chayna, who will not be standing for Assistant Secretary next year, thank you for your support over the past 3 seasons. You have become a good mate along the way, and I know you will continue your input into this Association through other avenues. I will finish with one final thank you – Paul Archer. No one will truly understand how much time and effort Paul puts in to our Association. Whilst he may be recently retired and have some spare time, he amazes me with his dedication. He really does love this Association, and I have no doubt that the Association truly loves him back. I continue to enjoy working with you and the amount of respect I have for you cannot be measured. Thanks again for another great year mate! Enjoy your time off and see you all at our AGM in February.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Mrs. Kim Archer

Social Committee: Anthony Harb, Stephanie Penteado & Nathan Fayad Season 2018 was my first as your Social Secretary after serving my apprenticeship on the Social Committee under the leadership of Nathan Loveday. We organised several functions during the season with mixed success, our first was the traditional trip down the M5 to Tabcorp Park, Menangle for our Trot night. A record group in excess of 40 members and friends attended and by the level of singing on the return bus trip most members if not backed a winner certainly enjoyed the 'spirit' of the night. Our annual Blue & White Dinner in June saw a crowd of approximately 120 attend, the League Club produced another night of fine dining and we witnessed John Maarbani receive his Life Membership, congratulations John. lt was great to see the dance floor full until last drinks were called. l'm sure that all attendees enjoyed the evening, even if our President had heart palpitations on seeing the alcohol bill! The Association conducted a Saturday feast to welcome the referees from Auckland and the Gold Coast Referees' Association as part of our exchange program, a most enjoyable night. The Association provided a light lunch on both days of gala weekend & then we returned to Campsie on the Sunday night for pizza. The active members enjoyed both the pizzas and beer competition! Our traditional Life Members Night saw an attendance of 60, with 23 Life Member's in attendance at the Blueberry Hill room. Whilst the atmosphere was good, having the NRL semi-final on live and then proceeding into our presentations was the norm, I felt that the night was a little flat and we need to encourage more active members to attend. The Executive is reviewing the format of this important function to make it more relevant and to ensure that the function remains as its focus the life members. As previously decided by the Executive the golf day was replaced in October with an indoor sports afternoon, with a light lunch provided. Nathan Loveday is

still looking for some teeth after being shoulder charged by Gavin Beecroft! Attendance was disappointing but those who joined in the activities enjoyed themselves. One of the highlights for season 2018 was our Development Camp held in November at Corrimal. A great venue for both accommodation and the surf club for the seminar. On the Friday night after dinner we had a Trivia night which caused a lot of laughter, Saturday morning after a beach walk a BBQ breakfast. The actual seminar was fantastic, excellent topics and guest speakers from both the NRL, NSWRL and our Junior League. We finished the day with a game of beach cricket followed by barefoot bowls and dinner. After breakfast on Sunday we concluded the weekend with ten pin bowling, our Secretary is still trying to get a 'strike'! A wonderful weekend, thanks to all who attended. Our final social for 2018 is in the planning stage as I write this report, barefoot bowls, a visit from Santa and dinner at Padstow bowling club. l'm confident of another great end of year function. Thanks to my Social Committee of Anthony Harb, Stephanie Penteado and Nathan Fayad, all have given any assistance I have needed during the season, it has been great working with you. Well done. I appreciate the support of the Executive and the members, without you attending and providing feedback we cannot improve on the activities that we organise for your enjoyment. Be active in our social scene, it provides plenty of wonderful moments and laughs! In conclusion, I have enjoyed my first year as Social Secretary and I hope that I have in some small way contributed to the success of season 2018. Bring on 2019!

DIRECTOR OF REFEREE’S REPORT Mr. Richard Daizli

In Season 2018, the Director’s role was split between junior games (U5 to U12s) and senior games (U13s to Opens). In control of the junior games were Daniel Gardner, Kim Archer, Dennis Quin & Barry Ruttle and I would like to thank them for their assistance during the year. A number of referees graduated from the junior grades to the senior grades which greatly assisted in appointing referees on the ever increasing games on Saturday. This year, Nathan Loveday joined me as my assistant and was extremely helpful in sharing a number of tasks making my job much easier. Nathan was instrumental in coordinating the assessors for each weekend which saw us complete a record number of assessments this year. The continual feedback to the referees will only benefit them as they progress through the grades. Overall, our referees performed strongly and more consistently which led to a number of officials promoted to higher grades which they handled competently. Some did their first finals and grand finals and others got their first taste of senior football. A number of the younger referees performed strongly and should be ready in season 2019 to take the step up to referee senior games on a more consistent basis. We hope the new referees that joined us this year enjoyed the season and will remain with us for future years. With Gold divisions for 14, 15 and 16s scheduled for Saturdays’, this stretched our resources in terms of covering touchlines for all games. Hopefully the new referees will be able to start running some touchlines next year in these grades to further their experience. I would like to thank those referees who constantly would travel between grounds on Saturdays’ to fulfil these appointments.

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

Referees identified as potential of joining development squads were given the opportunity to referee in higher grades to develop their skills and prepare them if selected. This ensures we as an association are supportive of the pathways system that has been created by the league in developing referees. Credit must go to Nathan Loveday for his work with the development squad as most of the referees in this squad improved immensely by the end of the year and were rewarded with finals and grand finals. It was pleasing to hear that Anthony Harb, Mariam Rifaie and Ramzi Daizli have been invited to train with the Junior Representative squad. All three showed rapid improvement over the year and have put in the extra work, given them the opportunity to progress their careers. We also had Nathan Fayad and Stephanie Penteado invited to the Emerging Squad and hopefully they will progress to the Junior Representative Squad next year. There are a number of promising referees who will hopefully get the chance to impress next year. The Association has a bright future and with the correct guidance, many more will reach higher honours provided they put in the hard work. Thank you to all advisory board members, including senior active referees who gave up their time to assess referees every week and pass on their advice to help develop all referees. With the high number of young referees we currently have, this will be even more important next year. Congratulations to all referees who officiated in Grand Finals. We had a mix of experience officiating with a number of young referees controlling their first senior grand finals. Having watched all games, our referee’s performed strongly and showed great professionalism. Congratulations to Joseph Tesoriero for receiving the Clubb Johnson Trophy for the second time. Joseph had some strong competition but performed strongly during the finals and deserved his position as our number one referee. Congratulations to Anthony Ibrahim for receiving the John Farrelly-Reg Dick Trophy for most improved referee of the year. His persistence and willingness to learn saw him progress to Under 14s by the end of the year. Anthony has a bright future if he continues to put in the hard work.

LEO RANDLE TRUST REPORT Mr. Paul Archer

Trustees for 2018: Paul Archer (Chair), Nathan Loveday, Daniel Gardner, Peter Longhurst & Warren Gee. The Trust deed which governs the overall operation of the Trust was reviewed during 2018 and the Trustees held the compulsory three meetings during the year. Commencing from the 2018-19 financial year the Trust no longer has tax exemption, although this may concern some members the Trustees were not overly concerned by this development. It will enable funds to be utilised more widely but will require that the Trust employ an accountant to file a tax return each year. The Trust continues to be in a healthy state and the Trustees endeavour to ensure that our capital investment remains consistent and our annual expenditure is approximately equal to any gains in each financial year. The Trust, Trustees and all Association members are indebted to Ian Butler who provides financial advice and Trustee Peter Longhurst who has a major role in the administrative side of the Trust. The Trust accounts are audited each year by Anthony Ryan, many thanks Anthony. During the calendar year of 2018 the following funds were distributed by the Trust: • • • • •

DEVELOPMENT REPORT Mr. Nathan Loveday

In 2018 it was decided by the Committee to offer development positions to 8 members. With Joshua Mabon declining due to his acceptance into the Police academy it was with 7 we started. Half way through 2018 Meleck Lababidi joined Joshua down at the academy. I would like to congratulate these members as well as Aaron McGeoch on their acceptance and wish them all the best for the future in the police force. I believe the development squad is a really positive thing for the Association and the development of members. We have a certain criteria which are reviewed yearly and I believe this will need to be looked at further with 2018 having several members who struggled to balance the HSC year and training. Having few numbers at most extra sessions made it hard to get cohesion within the squad and everyone on the same page. Whilst there was plenty of hard work put in the commitment amongst some was questionable throughout leading to some not achieving the goals they may have set at the start of the year. I can see all of the members in the future going further with their refereeing career but the balance of work, school & uni needs to be found to move forward. Unfortunately in 2018 the Schoolboy Cup was no longer an option for our development members and that exposure to that competition in which we have received in the past limited further development as seen in past years. Performances on the field in 2018 were encouraging with those rewarded with Semi Finals and Grand Finals! It has been rewarding to see the development of those putting in the hard work to see them reach their goals but also receive positive feedback from NSWRLRA Coaches on the performance of members of the squad.

Big thanks to all of those members who came early and assisted with the training sessions and gave some numbers when possible. With the technical side of refereeing the way it is now the members need to be aware of the important of absorbing as much information and asking as many questions as possible. 2018 DEVELOPMENT SQUAD MEMBERS MELECK LABABIDI, RAMZI DAIZLI, MARIAM RIFAIE, ANTHONY IBRAHIM, STEPHANIE PENTEADO, AARON MCANDREW, NATHAN FAYAD

NRL SQUAD REPORT Mr. Adam Gee

One of the closest NRL competitions in years, and possibly world sport, has been fought out and decided in 2018! As NRL Referees it was a privilege to contribute and be a part of such a great competition. Season 2018, once again, began back in November with somewhat of a disrupted pre-season due to a significant number of referees returning later to pre -season training due to the World Cup. Post Christmas, everyone was back on deck. Tony Archer moved into the position of General Manager of Officiating to oversee the National Structure and its implementation, which saw Bernard Sutton take up the position of Senior Manager of Officiating with the assistance of Premiership winning coach Michael Maguire as a head coach and leadership consultant. With this came the introduction of some new ideas to revitalise the culture and professionalism of the squad. Naturally the squad faced some challenges, but along with this came some positive results. Each season presents plenty of opportunities for individuals to succeed in their various roles but this individual success never takes place without the help and assistance of the other guys and girls on the field and the greater squad. Along with the squads help we also saw the introduction of Matt Jeffries as the new Head of Performance, he worked tirelessly with Reece Williams (Head of Strength), Lachlan Dodd (Sports Science) and Michelle Minichiello (Physiotherapist) to make sure everyone was performing at their best, physically and mentally. A big thank you to the coaching staff and support staff who contribute to the season and the outcome of performance week in, week out.

HON. TREASURERS REPORT Mr. Gavin Beecroft

It is with pleasure that I submit the 2018 financial accounts to members for financial year ending 31 October 2018. The overall result for the 12 months to 31 October 2018 was an increase in equity of $3,840.66 As Treasurer, and on behalf of the Association, we remain extremely appreciative of all of the support provided by our sponsors, without which our many programs and initiatives would not be possible. The support that we receive from our sponsors should never go unnoticed. We are truly grateful. Once again, we are fortunate have support from the New South Wales Rugby League Referees’ Association (NSWRLRA) continues to offer great support by making available Coaching Development and Administration Grant. The criteria set by NSWRLRA are that these funds need to be used for Coaching & Development. I report our expenses to Coaching Development for 2018 was $5,392.50 The Leo Randle Trust has once again provided the Association with funds to run various programs throughout 2018 for the benefit of all members. The Leo Randle Trust allocated $3,960 for 2018. These contributions assisted with the following during: • Association Polo’s Shirts for all members Some notes regarding our financial reports Camp - Members will note that we received income of $1,760 from members, those funds are set aside and used for Association Development Camp, which was held in November 2018. The related expenses for Development Camp will appear in next year’s financial statements.

37

CBDRLRA Inc. 97th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2018

Meeting costs - During 2018, there was a significant cost of meetings throughout 2018. The reason for this was Canterbury League Club introduced changes to our Club Grants and as such charged the Association a room set up fee of $100 per meeting. These costs were deducted from our non cash club Grant of $3,000 provided by Canterbury League Club, which was originally to offset our functions cost. I am hopeful that, we can negotiate this with Canterbury League Club and our meeting cost waived. Gift and donations - thought out the year our members donated to the farmer’s drought appeal and breast cancer via the Milperra Colts Junior Rugby League Club. Centenary Fund - The Centenary Fund balance is currently $36,965 as at 31 October 2018. Our Sponsors Bidel, Soneta and new sponsors Cleanrite, have provided additional funds throughout 2018 to be contributed to our Centenary Fund. On behalf of the members, we thank them.
