PATRON’S REPORTS SEASON 2019 As the Chief Executive of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, I am in the lucky position of being able to see all the great work that continues to take place in relation to the officiating of the game. As Patron of the CBDRLRA, I understand how the continued development of match officials is crucial to the ongoing success of our sport. The CBDRLRA continue to provide the training, education and administration that is vital for all officials as they progress in the game. This support is crucial in continuing to attract young people who wish to take on officiating roles. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for the time you devote to this area of the game and wish you all the best heading into the 2020 season Mr Andrew Hill – CEO Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

One of the most important aspects of sport is the respect shown to officials. This is particularly important for juniors coming through the system and learning about what sport is all about. The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have always relied on a strong junior league producing players that are taught the basics of the game and then develop their skills as they move through the age groups. The dedication of officials and their ability to educate young players during the game is crucial to this development. The time and commitment put in by officials to support junior league is outstanding and something that no one should take for granted. I applaud all those officials that contribute so much to the game and thank you for your continued support. Everyone at the Bulldogs recognises that the game couldn’t exist without you. Mrs Lynne Anderson – Chair Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

On behalf of Canterbury League Club I would like to congratulate the CanterburyBankstown District Rugby League Referees' Association on another successful year. The League Club is proud to have been the Major Sponsor of the CBDRLRA for many years and I am personally honored to have been one of the Association’s patrons in 2019. It’s a well-worn cliché but one that continues to ring true – without the referees there is no game. The work that the Association do to bring new referees to rugby league and to support our existing referees is crucial to the strength of the game in our region and we look forward to again partnering with the CBDRLRA in 2020. Mr George Coorey – Chairman Canterbury League Club

PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD Mr. Paul Archer

At the conclusion of our 98th season the Association is in a very healthy state, our membership base is solid and financially we are well placed for the future. We have 55 active district members who service the Junior League each weekend during the season, these members consist of our younger members and those mature members who are the backbone of this great Association. We continue to recruit new members and I acknowledge the assistance of the district club in these endeavours, as we advertise for members at every Bulldogs home game! Can I ask all members to assist and ask your mates to join up and enjoy both our on and off field activities that CBRA has to offer and earn some extra money. I thank all active members for your contribution each weekend, it can be a challenge but you continue to impress me by your resilience. However, two areas that cause myself and the Committee concern is the lack of active members who attend training each week and a continual average result in our rulings tests. We need to address these areas to improve our skills and knowledge of the laws of the game; the Committee is reviewing these matters during the off season. We cannot survive without the wonderful support from our loyal sponsors, long term major sponsor Canterbury League Club chaired by our friend George Coorey continue to offer both financial and administrative support, it was terrific to see League and Football Club Director John Ballesty and his wife attend our Blue and White function as did our mate and fellow League Club Director (& Hon Member for Life) Peter Winchester. The support from Steve and Geoff Dib from Soneta Plumbing and DeVel P/L is ongoing and their announcement of additional funding for our Centenary celebrations was well received, we are proud to be associated with the Dib brothers, they are true friends of this Association. Talking about Association friends, we have no better friends than Paul and Yvette Hassarati; their company Ronnie’s Demolition have been our sleeve sponsors for about 15 years. However, they have decided it is time to slow down and have sold the business and 2019 was the final year of their sleeve sponsorship. On behalf of all members, thank you Paul & Yvette, your support and friendship has been very important to the

5

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

Association, we look forward to continuing to see you at our functions for years to come. The Committee has resolved that Ronnie’s will appear on our jerseys for 2020, as it is our intention to have new on field gear in 2021 and we will negotiate for a new sleeve sponsor during the upcoming season. The printing sponsorship provided by Club Menangle (NSWHRC) is ongoing, spanning the past 23 years and to Bruce Christison, CEO a massive thank you! The support from Buddy Semrani from Centenary Sponsors, Cleanrite Sydney is welcomed and in 2019 we had a new Platinum Centenary Sponsor in Bankstown RSL who have signed up for 3 years (2019-21), the Club logo appears on our Touch Judges flags and a new trophy was introduced this year to acknowledge the TJ of the year! We had a couple of dinners at Bass Hill RSL during 2019 and in 2020 these will be held at Bankstown RSL, it is a new club and members are encouraged to support it as they support us! I acknowledge the financial and administrative support from the NSWRLRA, NSWRL and NRL which is provided each season. Talking about support, the Canterbury Football Club headed by Chair Lynne Anderson and CEO Andrew Hill continue in the long standing tradition of being ‘there for us’ whenever needed. As members are aware during 2019 the Board agreed to name the referees room at Belmore, the Leo Randle Referees’ Room in honour of our late President and Life Member. It was an honour for myself and then Director Chris Anderson to open the room on 19 th May 2019, a very proud moment for the Association. We conducted a well-attended meeting at Belmore that night. Thank you to all at the Football Club for your friendship and support. The Junior League had a strong season, little on field controversy, their volunteer base do a tremendous job for our local clubs and I thank the staff at the Junior League in particular Anne - Maree Poole for your assistance during season 2019. The GM of the Junior League, Nathan Mairleitner was a tremendous supporter of our Association and the JL in particular. He introduced many new initiatives and certainly had the kids in the foremost of his thinking; Nathan is a very professional administrator. Unfortunately, Nathan resigned his position late in the season, a tremendous loss for our district; we wish him well for his future employment and as he is an accredited referee we were very pleased that he joined our Association in August 2019.

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

On the social front season 2019 was a great success, our annual Trots night was well supported and our major function the Blue and White dinner at the League Club in June was a great night, over 110 in attendance to see Warren Gee become our 86th Life Member, a just reward for Warren’s contribution both on and off the field. We entertained our exchange visitors from both the Gold Coast and Auckland Referees’ for dinners at Bass Hill RSL and Moxon Sports Club, thanks to those members who attended these functions. Our final formal function for season 2019 was our Life Members Lunch and Presentation. This year we moved to a lunch format with a guest speaker. A change in venue to the Terrace Bar at The League Club was perfect and a crowd of 70 plus attended, the GM of Football for the Bulldogs, Steve Price entertained the gathering as our guest speaker and covered a range of topics which had all entertained. Thank you Steve. After acknowledging the Life Members in attendance the following trophies/awards were presented: Clubb Johnson Trophy

Jack Bird

Farrelly Dick Trophy

Matthew Gomes

Styles Matthews Award

Owen Miller

Bank RSL TJ of Year Award

Kane Thorburn

Archer Garwood Award

Joey Tesoriero

Leo Randle Award

Kim Archer

Congratulations to all recipients, you are all wonderful contributors to our Association. We had 4 members on the Junior Rep Panel who all performed well, but without doubt the highlights were the appointment of Jack Bird to the centre in the Harold Mathews Grand Final and Stephanie Penteado’s appointment to the line in the Tarsha Gale grand final. Graded members, Nathan Loveday and Jimmy Oliveira both had semi appointments and NRL referee Adam Gee for the 3rd consecutive year reached the 3rd round of the NRL semis. Well done to all. During 2019 St. George and Illawarra Referees celebrated their centenaries, congratulations to both Associations. Season 2020 will be our 99th; final

7

preparations for our Centenary year in 2021 are well underway with the Centenary Committee in for a busy 2020. Our Gala Centenary Dinner will be held on Saturday 23 January 2021 at William Inglis Hotel at Warwick Farm. We will also conduct the annual Blue and White function in June, 2021. Non active members should ensure they are financial to ensure their eligibility to be invited to one of our Centenary functions. We will celebrate this milestone in true CBRA tradition; we are the ‘social’ association. Finally, to our office bearers who toil away each year, whether it be training, appointing of referees, social & gear activities you all have the welfare of your fellow members and the Association at your forefront, we appreciate your efforts. To my fellow Committee members, thanks for your input and to our hard working Secretary Daniel Gardner; you have held the position now for 4 years and continue to impress with your work ethic and professionalism. I enjoy our regular interaction and you make my job so much easier. Although, the fact you support East’s makes it difficult at times! Thanks, Gards! Can I say thanks to all the partners and parents of our members, thank you for supporting your family ones who have decided to ‘take up the whistle’, they could not do it without your support. Finally, to my wife Kim, you continue to contribute in so many ways to CBRA and more importantly to me, thanks, I love you! Look forward to catching up at the AGM.

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Daniel Gardner

Mr Chairman and Members, Another year down and another step closer to our Centenary season in 2021! 2019 was another successful season on and off the field, and we continue to set the bar as an Association, something which continues to make me proud to serve as your Secretary The 2019 season kicked off with our Annual Seminar on Saturday 30th March, held this year at Belmore Sports Ground. Many thanks to all our members and special guests who attended and ensured we hit the ground running for the season ahead. The AGM was once again at the home of our Major Sponsor, Canterbury League Club, on Thursday 28th February 2019. Paul Archer was elected unopposed as President for his 4th consecutive season, and 17th overall. A wonderful achievement by Paul who continues to lead this Association well and clearly has the support from the members! The members elected Andrew Hill, Lynne Anderson and George Coorey as Patrons for the 2019 season. All three individuals gratefully accepted the nominations and were wonderful patrons throughout 2019. Thank you to Andrew and Lynne for their reports which can be found earlier on in this report. The Committee welcomed some fresh faces onboard in 2019 with Anthony Harb being elected unopposed as Assistant Secretary for his first season on the Committee. This saw Peter Chayna and Adam Gee elected onto the General Committee via a ballot. All other positions from 2018 remained unchanged. The stability in the Committee indicates the trust shown by our members and the Committee greatly appreciates this support and will continue to put the Association first in all matters!

11

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

I’d like to acknowledge Aaron McAndrew who unfortunately missed out on a position on the Committee this season. Aaron was a positive contributor in his time on the Committee and I am sure we will see him hold a position elsewhere in the future. Thanks Aaron! Sponsorship Canterbury League Club was the Association’s major sponsor once again for 2019, taking our partnership to 23 years. Chairman George Coorey was elected as a Patron for 2019, and we wish to thank George, the Board and all the staff for their wonderful support of our Association throughout 2019. Our relationship with Canterbury League Club continues to go from strength to strength and we look forward to 2020! Ronnie’s Demolition & Excavation returned as our sleeve sponsor for 2019. We cannot thank Paul and Yvette Hassarati enough for their generous support over many years. Unfortunately, Paul and Yvette have decided to take a break and have sold the company, meaning 2019 was our last season with Ronnie’s Demolitions & Excavation as our ‘sleeve sponsor’. We thank Paul & Yvette for their endless support and wish them both well in their future endeavours! Club Menangle once again supported our Association in 2019, with all printing needs (including our Annual Report) and hosting our Annual Trots Night at Menangle Park. Thanks to CEO Bruce Christison and all the team at Menangle for their support, it is very much appreciated. A big thanks to Nathan Loveday and his team at MIYO Australia for all their work providing gear throughout 2019. We welcomed new shorts sponsors this season, with DeVel Pty Ltd coming on board. Whilst a new company, it is far from a new relationship with Steve & Geoff Dib agreeing to be Shorts Sponsors, signing on for 3 years (2019-2021) Steve and Geoff Dib also have contributed to our Centenary Fund through both SONETA & DeVel P/L and we are truly grateful for their support! We continue to enjoy the support of Centenary Sponsors CLEANRITE SYDNEY. To Buddy and Nancy Semrani, our sincerest thanks to you for another wonderful season

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

This season saw Bankstown RSL come on board as Platinum Centenary Sponsors, and what a year it was! Our new flags with the Bankstown RSL Logo look fantastic and got plenty of exposure throughout the season at all grounds. We also introduced the ‘Bankstown RSL Touch Judge of the Year’ award this season, congratulations to inaugural winner Kane Thorburn. Paul and I met with Scott Dickson (CEO) and Andrew Bailey (Marketing) midyear and enjoyed a tour of the new facilities on offer at Bankstown RSL. We look forward to being able to utilise the facilities for various meetings & functions throughout 2020. Some of our members were lucky enough to attend the Bankstown RSL Melbourne Cup Function in November and whilst there weren’t many winners it was a great day had by all. Thanks to Andrew and his team for their hospitality! Junior League Season 2019 saw Wayne Oxford once again elected as President of the Junior League, with Nathan Mairleitner settling into his role as General Manager. The season went by, not without its challenges, but working with Nathan was a pleasure and we got through the season virtually unscathed. To my disappointment, I was notified a week before the Semi Finals that Nathan had resigned his position, effective immediately. I personally want to thank Nathan for his efforts for our Junior League. It is very rare to get someone with the passion and dedication Nathan committed to the League, and he will be a big loss moving forward. All was not lost though, with Nathan joining our Association as a member at our General Meeting on 28th August and we are extremely thrilled to have Nathan in our ranks! John Grealy has been appointed General Manager of the Junior League as of November 2019 and I wish John all the best in his new role, and look forward to seeing what he will bring to the Junior League. The season culminated with 3 weekends of Grand Finals at various grounds throughout the district. I congratulate all officials who were appointed to Grand Finals. All games were refereed exceptionally well and there were some outstanding games watched over the course of the 3 weeks, much of this due to the contribution of our officials.

13

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

Congratulations to Jack Bird, who refereed the U20 Gold Grand Final, thus receiving the ‘Clubb-Johnson Trophy’ for the first time. Jack had a wonderful season and this honour was well deserved! Membership & Meetings This year the Association held 8 meetings, including the AGM and the average attendance was 39. The Committee decided to continue with monthly meetings, this format being supported by our members. I encourage members to attend meetings where possible as it will only enhance your knowledge and understanding, also giving you an opportunity to mingle with members you may not know or see that often. Rulings this year took on a fresh approach, with Brad Zarb introducing ‘KAHOOT!’ to the meetings. For those unaware what KAHOOT is, I would suggest you download it on your phone and start practising how quick you can answer rulings! This new style seemed popular and congratulations to Aaron McAndrew who finished the overall winner, walking away with a $100 gift card! This season saw us welcome 9 new members to CBRA (Alaa Chahine, Nazih Chehine, Owen Millar, Chris Rizoglou, Michael Rizoglou, Kye Truman, Danny Melhem, Elie Haddad and Nathan Mairleitner). As always, all our new members were given the very best in coaching by our senior members and with some exciting prospects amongst the group, we look forward to their development in the coming years. Training & Development Joseph Tesoriero was in charge of training for Season 2019, and I am sure Joseph will agree the attendance overall was poor. This is extremely disappointing as training is an important tool in educating our referees. The Committee is looking into this and we hope to bring some changes to next year to ensure more members attend on a regular basis. I personally thank Joseph for his efforts throughout the season, whilst it would’ve been very disheartening to turn up every Tuesday with a lack of numbers, to Joseph’s credit he continued to run the sessions with vigour and encouraged members to attend. Thanks Joey!

14

Cronulla Referees hosted our Annual Combined Training Session at Pointsbet Stadium. It was another wonderful night, with a healthy attendance from our members. A big thank you to Brian Gilchrist, Russell Stevens and all at Cronulla who were involved in making the night a success. Next season is our chance to host again and we are very much looking forward to this! Awards This year the Committee decided to alter the format of our Life Members Function. For the first time ever, the function was held as a Luncheon. And it was most pleasing to see the members support this change, with 70+ in attendance for what was a great event. Special thanks to Guest Speaker Steve Price who entertained all of us with many stories about his career! Congratulations to the following worthy award recipients: • • • • •

Leo Randle Award – Kim Archer Clubb-Johnson Trophy – Jack Bird Farrelly-Dick Trophy – Matthew Gomes Mathews-Styles Award – Owen Millar Archer-Garwood Award – Joseph Tesoriero

Grade – NRL/NSWRL After a mishap early on in the season which resulted in a fractured shoulder, Adam Gee had a wonderful season finishing off with an Assist Referee appointment to the Roosters v Storm Preliminary Final at the SCG. Adam has cemented his position within the NRL Refereeing ranks as a regular ‘Head Referee’ and we wish him well heading into season 2020 Jimmy Oliveira and Nathan Loveday were once again in the Graded Squad for 2019. Both performed well on a weekly basis and congratulations to Nathan who was appointed as an IN GOAL ASSIST for the Sydney Shield Grand Final. A wonderful achievement to receive a Grand Final Appointment! We once again thank the NSWRLRA for their support throughout 2019. Wonderful leadership shown by Chairman Peter Filmer and Executive Officer Faye Lehane, as well as continued support from their Directors, in particular Matt Hewitt and Steve Clapson

15

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

Vale In April we received the sad news of the passing of Fred Dib, father of our wonderful sponsors Steve and Geoff Dib. In December we were advised of the passing of former long serving Junior League Treasurer Sandy Steuerwald We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who have passed. To any member who lost a loved one throughout 2019, our thoughts are with you. Social Kim Archer ensured another wonderful season of social events were had throughout 2019. The Blue and White Cabaret was another successful night, with the highlight being Warren Gee receiving his Life Membership! I continue to stress the importance of attending social functions each year, and each year I continue to be impressed by the support our members give to these functions. The Committee decided to change the format of our Life Member’s Function, and whilst there was some pre-function jitters, this quickly disappeared once the day got underway with 70+ in attendance! The day was definitely well supported and we look forward to continuing to build on the social front in 2020. General The NRL introduced a new online system for accreditation in 2019, and whilst there was some hiccups and issues experienced by members, I hope the changes made heading into 2020 will eradicate these issues and the process will be smoother for all members. Many members would’ve received notice of their accreditation expiring in November 2019. Members are reminded not to be alarmed by this, with the new system rolling over every 12 months. Once members attend a re-accreditation session each season (Seminar), their accreditation will roll over for another 12 months.

16

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

This season we had 4 members in the Junior Rep Squad with Ramzi Daizli joining Joseph Tesoriero, Aaron McGeoch, and Jack Bird. All 4 enjoyed successful seasons, with Jack topping off his season by being appointed to referee the Harold Matthews Grand Final. This match was played at Bankwest Stadium and Jack had an outstanding game. Special mention to Stephanie Penteado who whilst not in the Junior Rep Squad for 2019, was appointed as a Touch Judge to the Tarsha Gale Grand Final which was also played at Bankwest Stadium. Stephanie and Mariam Rifaie have both been invited to trial for Junior Reps for 2020 and we wish them well in their endeavours! We once again participated in our Annual Exchange Programs with Group 6, Gold Coast & Auckland this season. Congratulations to the following members who participated in our exchanges: • Gold Coast Exchange – Gavin Beecroft & Matthew Gomes • Auckland Exchange – Jamie Pomeroy & Anthony Ibrahim • Group 6 (Junior League) – Jake & Daniel Kolesnyk Whilst our members enjoyed their travels, we were lucky enough to host the following referees, who all represented their Associations with distinction and were a pleasure. • Gold Coast Referees – Ibby Jahsan & Henry Symonds • Auckland Referees – Garth Mitchell & Zane Richardson • Group 6 Referees – Matthew Galvin & Ryan Schumack Our Exchanges have been held for many seasons and we look forward to continuing these in 2020. At the final meeting of the season, ‘The Leo Randle Meeting’, George Elias was re-presented with Life Membership. Further detail of George’s extensive record of service to the Association can be found on page 44 of this report, and it is quite a read! George has dedicated decades of service to this Association, and is always on hand to help in any role possible. George has held positions as Vice-President, Secretary, Director of Referees to name a few, and amazingly has attended 500+ meetings with a rate of 84.3%. Outstanding! Thank you

17

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

George for all your service and it was most pleasing to see you re-presented with your Life Membership this year. In conclusion, after my 4th season as Secretary, I am still learning and growing in the role. Whilst challenging at times, the enjoyment in serving all of our members is something I really do cherish and I thank each and every member for their support throughout the season. I thank all the Committee for their efforts throughout 2019, and in particular Paul Archer who continues to amaze me with his dedication to this Association. Paul still has unwavering passion for this Association and its members after 17 seasons as President, and our members are truly grateful! Whilst I mentioned challenges in my role, it is nothing compared to the challenges our country has faced with the bushfire crisis which has engulfed much of our country, and in particular our state. Many of our members have retired and moved out of Sydney over the years, and I hope all our members and families are safe wherever they reside. The devastation that has occurred is truly beyond comparison, and our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by these terrible fires. I also want to thank each and every emergency worker who has committed so much of their time to help. Whilst there has been many great losses throughout this crisis, it could’ve been much worse had it not been for the efforts of our wonderful firefighters and volunteers! In early January the Leo Randle Trust Committee approved a donation of $1,500 to the RFS to help with the recovery and rebuild after the fires I look forward to seeing everyone at our Annual General Meeting in February.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Mrs. Kim Archer

Social Committee: Anthony Harb, Mariam Rifaie & Nathan Fayad Our 98th season was celebrated in true CBRA fashion with several outstanding social functions. We started the season with a pizza night at Moxon Sports Club following our annual seminar, this dinner was a great start to our social calendar with a large group in attendance. Our next get together was our annual visit to Menangle Park Trots, as usual the buffet was outstanding but unfortunately the 30 guests had difficulty in finding a ‘winner’! On the Sunday of the June long weekend we entertained 110 members, guests and sponsors in the Blueberry Hill Room at our major sponsor Canterbury League. Another great night, we witnessed member Warren Gee be elevated to Life Member status and as a result we established another first for CBRA in that Warren joined his son, Adam who received his Life Membership in 2017. Congratulations Warren, a just reward for your service both on and off the field. Mid-season we entertained our exchange referees from the Gold Coast and Auckland with dinners at Bass Hill RSL and again at the Moxon Sports Club with our guests mixing with members for enjoyable evenings. Always a highlight is our final meeting, the Leo Randle meeting with large numbers attending and enjoying a drink and light supper in memory of our former President and Life Member, Leo. On 21 September we conducted a very successful Life Members’ Lunch and Presentation, the Committee resolved to change to a luncheon and this proved a good decision with 72 in attendance to honour our Life Members and acknowledge the award winners for 2019. Congratulations to all award recipients and I was overjoyed to receive the Leo Randle Award, Leo was a great friend to both Paul and I & we spent many hours with Leo both at his house and in the nursing home, we have great memories and he is sorely missed by all those that knew him. Also on the day we were fortunate to have former Bulldogs captain and current GM of Football, Steve Price as a guest speaker. Steve discussed a range of topics from his early days in Queensland,

19

playing for the Bulldogs, QLD and Australia and his final seasons with the NZ Warriors, a most enjoyable speech. Unfortunately, our planned Indoor Sports day in late October was cancelled due to lack of numbers, this was very disappointing for myself and the Committee, these events are planned well in advance and are for your enjoyment, please support us in our endeavours to provide alternate social events for all members. Please note we have rescheduled this event to Sunday 9th February at 12:00pm with a light lunch provided. The social events concluded with a successful barefoot bowls day and surprise for the kids at the Moxon Sports Club in late November. Finally, many thanks to those members who supported our various socials in 2019 and to my Committee, Anthony Harb, Mariam Rifaie and Nathan Fayad many thanks for your assistance. It has been a pleasure to be your Social Secretary and I look forward to 2020

DIRECTOR OF REFEREE’S REPORT Mr. Richard Daizli

In 2019, the Director’s role was split between junior games (under 7 to under 12s) and senior games (under 13s to Opens). In control of the junior games were Daniel Gardner, Kim Archer and Jamie Pomeroy and I would like to thank them for their assistance during the year. Their feedback on referees ready to graduate to the senior ranks was appreciated and greatly assisted us in appointing referees and touch judges on all games. This year, Nathan Loveday once again joined me as my assistant and was extremely helpful in sharing a number of tasks making my job much easier. Nathan was instrumental in coordinating the assessors for each weekend. Unfortunately we were not able to match the number of assessments completed in 2018 and the decline is something that will need to be addressed for 2020. With a large number of referees now capable of refereeing senior grades, they will need to be watched to ensure they are progressing at an acceptable level. Overall, our referees performed strongly over the year and especially during the finals series. Congratulations for those members who ran during the finals and did grand finals as well as those who achieved their first taste of senior football. With all divisions for 14, 15 and 16s scheduled for Saturdays’, this stretched our resources in terms of covering touchlines for all games. I would like to thank those referees who constantly would travel between grounds on Saturdays’ to fulfill these appointments. Referees identified as potential of joining development squads were given the opportunity to referee in higher grades to develop their skills and prepare them if selected. This ensures we as an association are supportive of the pathways system that has been created by the league in developing referees. Credit must go to Nathan Loveday for his work with the development squad as most of the referees in this squad improved immensely by the end of the year

and were rewarded with finals and grand finals as well as being invited to the Emerging Squad. It was pleasing to hear that Stephanie Penteado and Mariam Rifaie have been invited to train with the Junior Representative squad. Hopefully they both trial well and are part of the squad long term. There are always opportunities for those willing to do the hard work so if you have ambition to progress through the ranks, it is up to you to put the effort in. Senior members will always be there to help guide and support you on your journey. Thank you to all advisory board members, including senior active referees who gave up their time to assess referees every week and pass on their advice to help develop all referees. We have a high number of young referees so this will be crucial in the coming years to ensure all our referees are performing at a competent level. Congratulations to Jack Bird for receiving the Clubb Johnson Trophy for the first time. Jack performed strongly all year and was also rewarded at junior rep level with some outstanding appointments. Congratulations to Mathew Gomes for receiving the John Farrelly-Reg Dick Trophy for most improved referee of the year. His persistence and willingness to learn saw him progress to under 16s by the end of the year and he has a bright future if he continues to put in the hard work. Thank you to the executive board for their support during the year. Also special thanks to the junior league and the district club for their support throughout the year. Enjoy the festive season, keep training hard and set your goals for 2020. Ensure you read the Laws of the Game and work hard to fulfil your goals.

NSWRLRA GRADE SQUAD REPORT Mr. Nathan Loveday

2019 started in early November with Mick Stierli replacing Peter Burke who after 15 years involved in the squad stepped aside. Burkey must be commended for the time, effort and mateship given to many that have been and gone not only in this squad but the NRL squad as well. He has made a huge contribution not only as Strength and Conditioner but off the field as well. Thanks for the memories Burkey! The hard slog started at the Centre of Excellence, a welcome addition to the program and now a world class facility for the squad to train at week in and week out. The few weeks leading up the Christmas were tough with variety and besides the normal bash up, there was thinking under fatigue and referee related activity and decision making as well. The variety was first class and much appreciated by all the squad members. Late January came and it was time for the camp, 2 lots of ferries to Milson Island saw the squad greeted by coaches and straight into Hill Sprints repeated for half an hour before touring the island in single file before splitting into our groups for the weekend. There was 4:00am starts with the sound of a bell echoing throughout the island, the theme being ‘handling adversity’. There were many questions answered whilst doing laps, push ups, shuttles and Malcolm’s that would see the group up against it. It was all about turning up and not giving in and as a squad the effort was fantastic. Brett Kimmorley spoke to the squad in what was emotional and really hit the group. Following this was the amazing race; this tested the group with decisions under fatigue and teamwork being tested. I think Ben Teague is still holding onto his rubix cube and he still hasn’t finished it. The best thing about the camp was the Saturday night comradery; there was banter, singing and plenty of getting to know each other. It was also a nice

TRAINING REPORT Mr Joseph Tesoriero

Training for the season of 2019 may not be remembered or hailed as one of the greatest in CBRA’s history due to the poor attendance and potential lack of interest in refereeing; however, I believe it was important for two reasons. Firstly, on a personal level, it was a huge learning experience. Many members probably don’t realise, apart from the training coordinators of the past, the amount of time and effort that goes into planning, organising and executing sessions. To put in the time and effort that it takes and then see attendance numbers diminish to quite a low average is, to be honest, a pretty big bummer. However, it challenged me to persist on and deliver what I hope were smartly planned, informative and beneficial sessions to the committed bunch of people who did attend (my second point). To all of you who came week in and week out I want to give a big thank you! American author Kenneth Blanchard once said “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results”. This quote I feel really sums up the attitude shown by those members who made the trek to training throughout the year. Hopefully those members felt that they were rewarded for their commitment throughout the year. I wanted to take last year’s structure of training, which I felt was really good, and make some additions to it. Changing up the fitness component every four weeks ensured that members got a feel for all different types of training and different things that they can possibly incorporate in their own individual training. Members were put through their paces on various drills consisting of aerobic fitness, speed/acceleration, agility practice and strength training. Something else I wanted to bring to the table was the importance of teamwork, including a team working drill in every session. As we all know if you aren’t working on the field as a team, god help you!

32

CBDRLRA Inc. 98th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2019

Moving forward onto training next year hopefully more members attend so everyone can get the best out of it. I wanted to also take the time out to thank our assistants for training this year who consisted of Brad Zarb, Aaron McGeoch, and Jack Bird and to those members who additionally helped out with drills throughout the year, those members being Barry Ruttle, Daniel Gardner and Peter Chayna. Enjoy your off season and hopefully we can all come back bigger and stronger next season! Cheers,

Joseph Tesoriero Training Co-ordinator

NRL SQUAD REPORT Mr. Adam Gee

The 2019 NRL Season saw the Sydney Roosters go back to back as premiers, the first club to achieve this in 26 years. For the NRL Referees, the season began with a week-long camp in Coonabarabran (country New South Wales), the hometown of Bernard, Gerry and Chris Sutton. This involved community activities with some di-hard Rugby League fans from the Breakthru Disability and Support Organisation. Here we met some wonderful people, witnessed the work they were doing, and were able to complete a bush walk and BBQ lunch. The camp also involved a Q & A with the locals, some hands on labouring in the bush, a game of League Tag against the home town A-grade Team and of course some solid training! The beginning of the season saw the retirements of Alan Shortall (243 NRL games), Gavin Reynolds (147 NRL games) and Brett Suttor (109 NRL games) as referees and multiple more as Touch Judges; All wonderful officials who I have personally had the pleasure of refereeing with. All have moved on to other roles within the game or in Brett’s case as a Police officer in Tasmania. Congratulations to this group on outstanding careers, and on behalf of myself and the Canterbury Referees Association we wish them all the best in the future. Other milestones and award recipients this year include: Adam Cassidy – Referee debut Todd Smith – Referee debut Belinda Sharpe – Referee debut. Congratulations to Belinda on making history as the first ever female to officiate in the middle in an NRL match. An outstanding achievement! Darian Furner – Touch Judge debut

34

Beau Scott and Ben Lowe - debut as Review Officials Chris Sutton – 100 games Referee Dave Munro – 100 games Referee Michael Wise – 200 games Touch Judge Ben Cummins and Gavin Badger - 350 games as Referees Special congratulations to award recipients from the Col Pearce Medal presentation evening where Todd Smith received Rookie of the Year, Peter Gough Most Improved, Kevin Roberts Medal awarded to Ben Cummins and the prestigious Col Pearce Medal to Gerry Sutton. Personally, it was a season that began with a few low points after fracturing my shoulder in Round 2 after colliding with a player. This left me sidelined for 5 weeks, however, things turned around and after 5 long weeks on an exercise bike and plenty of rehab exercises, I found myself back head refereeing just in time for the inaugural Magic Round in Brisbane. This was one of the highlights of the season with a great buzz around town and a wonderful atmosphere at the games. It is quite rare as a refereeing group to all be in the one place for a weekend to officiate. This usually only occurs at tournaments like the 9’s. Next was Rep Round and I was lucky enough to referee PNG v Samoa. Once again, a great carnival type atmosphere. It is certainly true that international Rugby League is played differently to the NRL. I also had the privilege of being involved in some wonderful matches in the finals series with two of these games being played at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground, which is also a rare occurrence these days. Finally, the season concluded with the inaugural World Cup 9’s a tournament that in time will only grow when played at various venues. To Jack Bird, congratulations on receiving your First Clubb-Johnson Trophy as the number one ranked referee in the district. A deserved reward at the end of a very successful season in Junior Reps and hopefully a stepping stone for bigger things to come! Once again, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the Canterbury graded members to personally thank the Canterbury Association and its membership for all its ongoing support and encouragement throughout the

HON. TREASURERS REPORT Mr. Gavin Beecroft

It is with pleasure that I submit the 2019 financial accounts to members for financial year ending 31 October 2019. I am pleased to say that we have had strong year financially. The overall result for the 12 months to 31 October 2019 was an increase in equity of $8,434.77. We are grateful of the continued support we receive from our sponsors, without their support, we would not be in such a fortunate position. As we look through the figures for 2019, our financial surplus was enhanced up by a once off contribution from our centenary sponsors, particularly the Bulldogs League Club to contributed $15,000 in the 2019 financial year. Some of those funds were used ($8,000) to secure the venue for our Centenary celebrations for 2021. Once again, we are fortunate have support from the New South Wales Rugby League Referees’ Association (NSWRLRA) continues to offer great support by making available Coaching Development and Administration Grant. During 2019, we were able to secure additional funding from head body, due to having a strong presence of active membership; we were able to achieve tier one funding. Our expenses for Coaching Development for 2019 were $6,039.69, funding from NSWRLRA assist us in running coaching and development programs. I would like to acknowledge & thank the following for their financial contribution during 2019: NSWRLRA Cleanrite Soneta Plumbing

Some notes regarding our financial reports: Camp - Our camp which was held in November 2018 costs were $1,617.85, members funded this camp in the previous financial year. Meeting costs - During 2019, there was a significant reduction in costs of meetings throughout 2019. The reason for this was Canterbury League Club waived the $100 room hire for the 2019 Season Blue & White - During 2019, there was a significant reduction in costs of Blue & White Cabaret. One factor behind the reduction in costs, was the reduction of the alcohol bill for the night, via a voucher system introduced to prevent unnecessary waste. Centenary Fund – During 2019, we were able to place a deposit of $8,000 for the centenary function in 2021. The Centenary Fund balance is currently $47,085.11 as at 31 October 2019. We are well on track to have sufficient funding for this upcoming milestone. Our Centenary sponsors, DeVel, Cleanrite, Bankstown RSL, have contributed to our Centenary Fund. On behalf of the members, we thank them for their support. During 2019, I segregated the Centenary Funds from the Associations General Funds. Centenary funds are made of cash in the current St George Term Deposit and St George Business Saver account. The General Association funds made up from St George transaction account and CBA cheque account. I also advise all interest earned throughout the year from all accounts has allocated to the Centenary Fund.
