A Message From The Nt Police Legacy Board Chair
The importance of NT Police Legacy (NTPL) and why I havebeenanavidsupporter.
First and foremost, please take a moment to acknowledge our fallen comrades. We’ve experienced far too much sadness in recent years due to the passingofmanyofourservingandformercolleagues.
There is no denying that this has been a trying period forourpoliceforceandallfirstrespondersaroundthe world. It has been difficult to say the least for those whohavebeenpushedtotheirlimits. Therefore,NTPL isessential, anditisneededmorethanever.
NTPL was formed following the death of a serving member in a vehicle accident when he was returning tohisremotestationatHartsRange.Toassisthiswife and children, a hat was passed around the Alice Springs Police Club. It was this simple act of kindness that indeed created a legacy of action. That action was always to help, always to assist and to give comfort to thoseinneed.
NTPL was established as a charitable organisation to benefitthesurvivingspousesandchildrenofNTPolice Officers, who have been killed, died on duty or died whilst serving, including those that have retired for reasonsofillhealthorage.
It was founded in 1990 with a grant of $20,000 from the Northern Territory Police Association (NTPA). The NTPA also set up a payroll deduction system for memberstodonatedirectlytotheNTPL.
Avitalpartoftheongoingsupportoffamiliestofallen police officers is NTPL. It embraces the camaraderie and unique bond shared across the police family. It takes pride in providing compassionate, continuous and long-term support in the best interest of those needingcare.

What does Police Legacy do today?
NTPL ensures there is an organisation to assist the dependants of passed members and provides opportunities to network and engage with other police legacy families.
The NTPL is relatively small compared to other jurisdictions and supports 55 legatee families, 26 of whom have children under 25 years old. The children reside across the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. NTPL provides personal and financial aid, assistance and benefits for emotional, financial, education and welfare needs.
NTPL assists with personal development opportunities for legatees, such as the Kokoda Track walk. I have had the great honour of being the NT Policy Legacy Management Board Chair for the past 3 years, and I want to recognise and commend those who contribute to and support the NTPL.
