{on my mind} Ladies of the Club It was once a somewhat exclusive club that no one ever talked about. The club was open to anyone but seemed to extend invitations randomly. Once you joined, chances were high that you’d never leave. No one wants or asks to be in the “cancer club,” but of course it’s an invitation you can’t refuse. Breast cancer has been a plague since time began and it has created a forced sisterhood because of the huge need members have to support and be supported, to comfort and be comforted, to reassure and be reassured. The good news today is that with increased awareness, earlier detection, and millions of dollars poured into research and development every year, death rates from breast cancer have decreased 34% since 1990. Many of those dollars have come from ordinary people like you and me, running and walking for the cure or sponsoring our friends who commit to these kinds of events. A breast cancer diagnosis is no longer a death sentence — there are options, and there is hope and collective expertise to such an extent that a cure seems more possible than ever. The nail industry has a particular connection with breast cancer since we are predominantly women. There are not six degrees of separation between us and breast cancer — more like one, or even zero. Think about your family, friends, and clients right now. I bet that not a single one of you can claim the happy state of not personally knowing and loving someone with the disease. Including yourself. When you’re in the cancer club, treatments become a part of life for months, even years. Your livelihood often suffers, your body changes, sometimes even friendships or marriages fall apart under the strain. You try to stay positive and not worry that every aching joint is an omen instead of normal aging. There isn’t a lot that hasn’t already been said about breast cancer. What’s left are the stories — our breast cancer stories are as unique as our thumb prints. After a while, we forget about the illness, congratulate people on how healthy they look and phew, thank goodness that’s in the past. But the stories continue on, and sometimes we need to tell them again. And again. You can read some of these powerful stories on page 114. Battling, winning, losing, surviving. It’s a war out there and our stories keep us sane and hopeful. As someone who just celebrated 10 years cancer-free in ay to say W hat is the best w August, I’m reliving my own breast cancer story right now. May I live to tell who is it to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “I care” to someone oved And may they have no clue what I’m talking about. breast cancer ? (I l

{nails file} Car as Conversation Starter “I got my personalized plates because I am very passionate about my career in nails,” says Breeann Christensen, a tech at Untamed Optionz in Ely, Nev., and one of many nail techs whose license plate proclaims her profession loud and clear. “It’s a conversation starter, it gets people’s attention, and they ask questions.” Part symbol of pride, part advertisement on wheels, nail-related license plates are like mini mobile billboards. Entity Beauty creative director John Hauk has not one, but two personalized plates. “Nails are my life, so why not share that fact with the world?” he asks. “I can’t count the times strangers have approached me to ask about my license plates. No matter the exact question, they always leave with a smile on their face and my number in their pocket. Showing a little nail spirit is always good; using your license plate is just a small way of doing it.”

CELEBRITY FACE OFF 2015: Paying Homage to a Musical Muse San Francisco-based nail artist Sonia “G” Molina honored Eryka Badu, the inspiration behind many of her creative works, in her winning nail portrait. Take a look at Badu and the other famous faces commemorated by this year’s contest participants.

For the second year in a row, nail artist Sonia “G” Molina claimed the top spot in our competition with her remarkable portraiture. “I see the contest as the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to people who have inspired me tremendously in life,” says Molina, who submitted three entries this year. “I chose Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Nina Simone. Whether I’m sitting in the studio doing nails or painting a wall hanging three stories up on a scafold, I always need to have the right jams Molina and these three women are a few of my top go-tos. Badu’s socially conscious music feeds my artist’s soul and puts me in that right-brain groove like no other.” An independent nail tech working in the San Francisco Bay area, Molina has a growing client base in San Francisco’s fnancial district and also works at various public and private events, as well as doing editorial work. “I do portraiture in many diferent mediums — from nails to canvas to murals,” she notes. Earlier this year, she worked on Kipling USA’s spring/summer campaign featuring Gina Rodriguez, star of “Jane the Virgin.” “This fall I’ll be working under renowned artist, activist, and educator Juana Alicia Araiza, founder and director of True Colors Mural Project at Berkeley City College. We will be working with the class to create a mural for San Francisco State’s Project Rebound, which helps formerly incarcerated individuals to transition from prison back into society,” she says. Denver’s eco-friendly Base Coat Nail Salon recently expanded, moving to a larger space in a new eco-efcient high rise and changing its look in the process. Owner Tran Willis turned to designers Rust & Varnish Hospitality Group to update the aesthetic. Still modern and sleek, the space is primarily black on black with neons and whites highlighted throughout. “We made it for both men and women,” notes Willis. The new salon features six full-service pedicure stations and four manicure stations. While the space can’t quite be called a gallery, the work of a rotating set of artists, all women, is featured prominently. Events including tarot readings, various pop-ups, and stickn-poke nights are in the works.

5 1. Base Coat often hosts parties and events in this welcoming space. The center table is for retail, featuring eco-friendly local and national goods. The wall above the manicure station holds two photos by artist Kristen Hatgi Sink. 2. The cash wrap was designed and built by Rust and Varnish. The theme was inspired by Tran’s love of black, white, and gold with pops of neon color. The vibrant #TreatYoSelf neon sign was custom made. 3. Prior to the service, Base Coat ofers clients a chance to get up close and inspect what is being put on their skin. 4. Couches, pillows, cushions, a rug, and mint water help guests relax while waiting for their service. 5. Across from the stations, co-owner Alexandra Elman tests diferent lotions and creams. The retail case holds a large selection of natural beauty products. To the right is art from a local artist, Strange Dirt.

OCTOBER 2015

Mackinac Island, located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, is a National Historic Landmark dotted with large Victorian summer homes and the famous Grand Hotel (it was the location for the flm “Somewhere in Time”). The architecture, natural landscape, and history of the island create a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind place named one of the Top 50 Destination Wedding Spots by The Knot. > Tucked away in a small shopping complex called The Gate House near the Grand Hotel, 7th Heaven provides spa manicures and pedicures to clients between May 1 and Halloween. Bentley operates two locations on the island, as well as the Great Lakes Massage Academy in nearby St. Ignace on Michigan’s mainland. > About 60% of 7th Heaven’s clientele are brides and their bridal parties. The salon ofers a full range of services for complete wedding day packages. Bentley’s partner, hairstylist Mike Iles (they met working in the Astor Salon at Grand Hotel) creates lavish updos and the salon also has complete makeup services. As many as three bridal parties start the day before the wedding in 7th Heaven’s comfortable pedicure thrones. Besides her regular staf, Bentley has fve reliable stylists and nail techs, who will fll in on her busiest days. > After a long successful corporate career with PacSun, Bentley turned to nails after a head-on collision with a drunk driver left her critically injured and in the hospital for several months. She believes in the healing power of touch and often incorporates massage therapy for her stressed-out brides. Susan also ofers $10 nail clipping services for elderly and/or diabetic clients. “We nail techs are often the only ones doing this for people, giving them a gentle treatment that feels good,” she says. > A 20-minute ferry ride connects Bentley to her salons on the island — she lives and works in St. Ignace but made a special trip to Mackinac Island for my spa pedicure. “The island is so breathtaking to me,” Bentley says. “My family from Philadelphia came to visit and asked why I never told them how beautiful the island was. It’s just beyond description.” www.7thheaven-info.com PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELIZABETH HAYES

Lubin‘s tabby cat Ralph

Known for creating wearable and colorful manicures with a hint of whimsy, Metuchen, N.J.-based nail tech Danielle Lubin ofers a Halloween nail art tutorial inspired by her feline companion. “Around Lubin sunset every day, my tabby cat Ralph loves to sit in front of the large living room window. He makes a striking image silhouetted against the light,” she says. Follow these steps for a cute and festive design. 1. Prep the nail for gel-polish application. Apply a thin layer of base coat and cure. Paint the nail with two coats of white gel-polish. Cure between coats. 2. Rip a makeup sponge in half to prepare for gradation efect application. Using the ripped side of the makeup sponge, paint stripes of yellow, orange, and purple gel-polish on the sponge. Sponge the color to the nail to create a gradient in a parabola shape. Cure. Pro tip: Use a clean piece of makeup sponge for each color. 3. Repeat step 2, adding a deep burgundy gel-polish to the top edge of the design. Cure, and repeat until a smooth blend and opacity is reached. Use one coat of a matte gel top coat over the gradient and cure. Wipe away the dispersion layer so you have a smooth canvas for the next steps. 4. Use black gel-polish and a fne detail brush to paint the black cat silhouette and a little rounded perch for the cat to sit on. 5. Add a crescent moon and small dots for stars with white gel-polish and cure. 6. Finish design with another coat of matte top coat, cure, and cleanse. >>>

Hand & Nail Harmony Releases Commemorative Collections for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”

For Halloween this year, Gelish and Morgan Taylor are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic cult flm, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with commemorative collections. “We were inspired by the timeless, bold colors used for the flm’s posters: a pure white, a sassy bright red, and a deep dark black,” says CEO and founder of Gelish, Danny Haile. “Each shade was selected from our core collection and complements the style and unabashed fair throughout the flm.” The limited-edition Two of a Kind duos include a Gelish shade in Artic Freeze, Hot Rod Red, or Black Shadow, and are paired with a matching Morgan Taylor shade. Morgan Taylor’s special four-pack of mini lacquers comes with three classic colors and a new glow-in-the-dark top coat. “The collection wouldn’t be complete without a little mad scientist touch, so we added a glow-in-the-dark top coat for an electrifying and sassy fnish to the look,” says Morgan Haile of Morgan Taylor. Take a tip from… Nail Tech Mary Wolf

Color gradation, the shade fade, and the ombre are synonymous for a nail art technique that seamlessly blends two or more colors. The gradient efect, while subtle, ofers maximum impact when executed well. “I fnd it much easier to make an ombre look great when I use the darker of the two colors as the base,” says Los Angeles-based nail tech, Mary Wolf. Follow Wolf these steps for the perfect blend of color. 1. Paint the base with two coats of the darker color. Cure. 2. Apply light strokes of the lighter color over the base starting a little more than halfway up the nail. The frst layer should be barely visible. Cure. 3. Continue to build the lighter color by applying it toward the tip of the nail. Cure between coats. The lighter shade should be most opaque at the tip. 4. Apply top coat and cure. TECHNIQUE} behind the scenes Channeling the Aztecs Last year’s NAILS’ Next Top Nail Artist second runner up, Danielle Costantino, has a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to mixed-media nail design. Actually, she has a few million. The Cranston, R.I. nail artist showed her phenomenal skills in competition after competition, wowing the judges with intricate renderings of steampunk design, “Frozen”-inspired art, and L.A. street scenes. After winning her place in the Top 3, Costantino came to the NAILS studio to work on her cover. The challenge this time? Capture the spirit of the ancient Aztec civilization on nails. “Working on the NAILS cover shoot was surreal,” Costantino says. “But everyone was so kind and welcoming, I felt like part of the family.” Formerly the owner of two tanning salons, Costantino fell in love with nail artistry and sold the salons so that she could devote herself to nails. She works at Gina Silvestro’s Gel Essentialz Salon and is an educator for Gel Essentialz and a contributor to Akzentz’ blog. It was clear to the NAILS staff that Costantino didn’t need a lot of guidelines to create an amazing Aztec-inspired cover look.

Danielle Costantino (right), with model Ciara Pisa says the cover shoot was “probably one of the best days of my life!”

Here’s how you can get this month’s cover look. 1. Choose a neutral color palette with a pop of color. Starting with a prepped nail, apply a coat of Akzentz Luxio in Base and cure for 30 seconds. Next, polish the nail with two coats of base color, Akzentz Luxio in Neutral, curing in between coats. 2. Using a fat oval brush, fade Akzentz Luxio in Hypnotic Coral from tip to cuticle. Pat the uncured product with the fat side of the brush, pulling towards the cuticle. Eventually, you’ll create an ombre. When satisfed, cure for 30 seconds. 3. Using a small #2 detail brush, begin creating the Aztec pattern using Akzentz Gel Play in Black. 4. When creating your pattern, try to stay very symmetrical yet vary the width of your lines for an added dimensional element. When the lines are to your liking, cure for 30 seconds. 5. Add Akzentz Luxio in Tiffany in the lower center section of the design and cure for 30 seconds. 6. Fill in the two center sections of the design with Orly Gel Fx in Luxe and cure for 30 seconds. 7. Apply a top coat using Akzentz Luxio in Gloss and cure for 30 seconds. 8. To create the rest of the set, use various techniques for nails that are unique. Some have a mixture of Swarovski crystals and spikes, others have bold lines, colors, and dimensional aspects. The variety should be complementary and fow well.

In an effort to promote awareness to combat the disease, Jackson created a nail design that incorporates her signature bedazzled style in honor of her great grandmother. “I think by creating these pink ribbon-inspired designs, it encourages people to support one another and inform other women about breast cancer awareness,” she says. Follow these steps to fnd out how an iconic symbol can inspire courage and strength and remind your clients it’s time to think pink.

1. Prep the nails. Apply two thin coats of pink gel-polish and cure between coats. 2. Use hot pink gel paint to create the iconic breast cancer awareness ribbon. Cure. 3. Ghostly Gradient

Use China Glaze’s Ghouls’ Night Out collection along with core China Glaze colors to create this ghoulish gradient. 1. On wax paper or the shiny side of a nail form, apply one thin coat of Liquid Leather. While Liquid Leather is still wet, apply Dashboard Dreamer in a swish form to create a ghost outline on the right side. Repeat on the left side to match. 2. Using Looking Bootiful and a striper brush, outline the ghost form, creating a shadow efect. Blend in a small amount of Dashboard Dreamer as needed so the colors melt together. Allow to dry about 15-20 minutes depending on room temperature. (If room is warmer, less time is needed; if room is cooler, more time could be needed.) 3. Using a spatula, gently lift and peel the design of the wax paper. Lay on the nail, positioning carefully. Be sure not to manipulate too much to avoid tearing the appliqué. 4. Once positioned on the nail, use a cuticle pusher or an orangewood stick to press onto the nail and trim of excess. Clean around the cuticle with nail polish remover and a brush. 5. Touch up as needed with appropriate colors. 6. Finish with a coat of Seche Vite and cuticle oil. 7. Apply Drink Up Witches near the cuticle, followed by Looking Bootiful and Liquid Leather on the remaining nail tips. Use enough polish to allow the shades to fow together but not too much to food the sides. If needed, use a fne brush to drag a little to combine. Allow to dry and apply second coat of each color, allowing them to melt into each other. Once dry >>> completely, apply Seche Vite to protect the design.

Square Takes the Pain out of Payroll Processing

Square continues to roll out its suite of tools and services for small businesses. This time it’s Square Payroll, a quick and easy way to pay employees. “Existing payroll solutions are complicated, expensive, and typically built for large businesses with salaried employees,” says Square spokesperson Faryl Ury. With the introduction of Square Payroll, the company intends to make paying employees — particularly hourly ones — a whole lot easier. Here are a few of the system’s unique features: > Timecards are integrated: Hourly employees can easily clock in and out from the register and their hours are automatically imported into the system. > Taxes are taken care of: You don’t have to sweat your federal and state payroll taxes. Payroll automatically handles withholdings, payments, and flings. > Easy setup: Getting up to speed is quick and simple for both you and your employees. And employees can set up direct deposit and access their pay stubs online. > Afordable and transparent pricing: Pricing is $20 a month plus $5 for each employee paid that month. > Versatile: Although built with hourly employees in mind, Payroll works for salaried staf as well. At press time Square Payroll is only available in California, but the company has plans to expand to more states soon. For more information, go to www.squareup.com.

7 Tips From a Tax Whiz No one wants to think about taxes. Fortunately, hair-salon-owner-turned-CPA Larry Kopsa can do some of your thinking for you. Kopsa, a partner at York, Neb.-based Kopsa Otte (www.kopsaotte.com), ofers these handy tips to make sure you stay on the IRS’s good side. > Commuting to and from work or school is not deductible, but other mileage might be. Examples of deductible mileage include visits to the post ofce, the supplies store, and to and from client appointments done outside of the salon. The IRS requires you to keep a detailed mileage log, so keep a notebook in your car or a log on your phone. > Some travel expenses can be written of. Independent techs traveling to events such as New York Fashion Week can’t deduct their expenses. (NYFW is not considered a reasonable expense or destination.) Instead, Kopsa recommends taking your employees on smaller research-related trips to reasonable locations that are not too far from home. For example, if you’re based in Atlanta, you might take a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to gather information on the industry, new styles, new colors, etc. This could be written of because the information you gather there helps inform your team and builds your business. > Clothing damaged while at work can be written of at fair market value (use the Salvation Army site). > A home ofce must be used exclusively for business and be used regularly (12 hours per week or more is a good rule of thumb) to be deductible. Shared ofces in your home can’t be written of; therefore, if your ofce is in your kitchen or the ofce is also the spare bedroom, you can’t use it. Take note: The IRS can now travel to personally look at your home ofce, but don’t let that stop you from taking the deduction if you qualify. > If you make a business-related purchase under $75, you don’t need to keep a receipt. Just record the transaction in your book or on your electronic device so you have good documentation. > If you pay someone (like your child) to do little tasks around the salon, be sure to keep a time sheet and pay them a wage through payroll. > Tips are taxable. Kopsa recommends breaking them out on tax forms (under miscellaneous or other income) and not including them with your total income, so that the IRS can see the diferentiation. For more up-to-date tax information, check out Kopsa’s blog at www.kopsaotte.com/ blogs/salon-and-spa.

BUSINESS} crowdsourcing

This month we asked nail techs:

Do you have a no-child policy in your salon?

While I love children, I typically prefer that my clients do not bring them to their appointment. I explain to them that this time is meant for them and that they won’t be able to enjoy the full experience if they are having to supervise their kiddos. Most of the time a parent knows if her child can stay occupied with a tablet or toy. Occasionally I will make an exception. Overall, I feel that the salon isn’t an ideal environment for kids. It’s also respectful to other clients receiving services who may not want a child around during their experience.

I do have a “No Children” policy and it is working fne. Children do things naturally without thinking about the effects of what they have done, so they will just deface an object in an instant. Also, parents see their kids misbehaving, e.g., ripping at the upholstery on the chair arm and they do not stop the child; only when I utter something then they may apologize. However, they say “sorry” and leave the salon after their service, and I am left with a torn chair and a bill to have it repaired. My “No Children” policy was implemented about four years ago, and now the parents know, so I do not always have to repeat it. If a new customer comes in with a child I let her know the policy and that is usually enough.

Rachael Waggoner Dazzling Digits 3D Nails, Lakewood, Colo.

Kandis Jacob-Alexander Kandis Beyond Basics Nail Spa, Sudama Alley, Trinidad West Indies

Other than a child receiving services (accompanied by an adult), I do not welcome children in the salon. The main reasons are for the child’s safety and for the sake of the sanity of our clients. The salon has equipment, chemicals, etc., that are potential hazards. Kids are curious — they want to experience, explore, and touch everything, and they also have a short attention span so they are easily bored. While some can be entertained with a movie or video game, not all behave well. The salon is not a day care service; it should be a break from life for your client. If your client is coming to get her nails done, she is expecting to relax and pamper herself. By maintaining a nochild policy, you are providing that perfect needed escape, and creating the experience she wants. It contributes to a professional image of the salon, the business, and the brand, and increases the oneon-one attention and focus the client deserves.

Katy Lambson

I’ve had a “no children” policy for more than 15 years and it’s worked out fabulously for my sanity! On my initial visit with a new client, I casually bring into the conversation that this is a peaceful “child-free” salon, and it’s unreasonable to expect small children to sit quietly for an hour. I explain that when their hands are busy tending to the childs’ needs — such as drinks, restroom/ diapers, snacks, toys, etc. — then that means I have less time to complete her nail service on schedule. Once I spell out how unfair it is to penalize all the subsequent clients by me running late into their appointment time, then the client understands. I keep emphasizing that the focus of a salon visit is relaxation for all the clients, including the nail tech, too! Life’s short, I’m self-employed, and I shouldn’t have to be miserable in my own place of business. No amount of money is worth that!

We live in the age of the entrepreneur, where you are no longer an individual — you are a company! Everything you do — or don’t do — communicates the value of your personal brand. BY TIFFANI DOUGLAS

In the age of the entrepreneur — and social media — companies have started taking on personas of people, and people are now becoming more like companies in the ways they interact with their customers. As a result, entrepreneurs, specifcally beauty professionals, need to understand how to market themselves as individual companies, stay relevant, and build personal brands. A fairly new phenomenon, personal branding is the process by which you fnd what makes you special and then use those discoveries to communicate a message to your target audience. Your personal brand is what makes you distinctive and separates you from others in the marketplace, and it’s the frst impression that pops into the minds of your peers, colleagues, and clients when they think of you. A solid personal brand can be very effective in helping you meet your career goals and expanding your business. The beauty industry is a vast world of talented and creative individuals all striving to get noticed, and in this highly competitive market, it is necessary to learn to leverage your talent to create value and build a personal brand that is strong and ever evolving. Follow these steps to build and maintain your own personal brand.

STEP 1: DISCOVER ASSESS YOUR TALENTS The discovery stage is the most important and timeconsuming step in the process of building a personal brand because it is the foundation on which to build everything else you will do. Personal discovery is all about taking inventory of your skills and exploring who you are and what makes you special.

OCTOBER 2015

Julie Mahloch, founder and CEO of Bloom.com, a social beauty network says, “A strong personal brand will quickly let others know what business you are in and what you bring to the table.” In order to develop a strong personal brand, you must frst clarify your career objectives. Ask yourself questions like: Who am I? What are my strengths? What skills do I have? What do I want to be known for in the industry? Where do I see myself in fve years? What do I hope to achieve and learn in my industry? What is unique about me? What are the things I do that really make a difference in my business? Becoming more self-aware will help you to defne your brand more clearly. As you continue to think about the talents and abilities that are uniquely you, there are two types of skill sets you should consider: tangible and intangible. Tangible skills typically refer to the specifc benefts that people will derive from you — hard skills. Intangible skills refer to the positive feeling people have about you — soft skills. Hard or tangible skills are quantifable abilities, which include specifc knowledge like acrylic application, gel nail application, manicures, pedicures, or any other teachable abilities that can be defned and measured, and are required for success in a job. Soft or intangible skills are personality-driven skills that affect interpersonal interactions, and while very different, intangible skills are just as important as tangible skills. These skills include characteristics such as leadership, communication, etiquette, getting along with others, listening, and other skills that aren’t easily quantifable. Because you work with the public, soft skills are especially

important and in many cases can take you further than your talent. Once you fgure out who you are, what your strengths are, and what you want to be known for in the market, write those discoveries down. Next, solidify what you want your brand to be, based on your tangible and intangible assets. You are your talent. Use yourself to brand your business.

STEP 2: BUILD CREATE A BRANDING TOOL KIT Once you’ve defned your brand, creating your personal marketing assets, or branding tools, is the natural next step. Branding tools are a combination of online and offine materials that assist in driving your brand. They are vehicles that help establish your message and communicate that

message to your audience. At minimum, personal branding tools should include a resume, business cards, social media networks, and a website or blog separate from your business website that is dedicated to the brand of you. Additionally you may want to have professional photos and fiers on hand. Your tools are representative of you, so the look, feel, and tone should be consistent across all channels. Logos, colors, taglines, and messaging should be consistent and always support your brand mission. These marketing tools are used to shape your position in the marketplace, get jobs, make yourself memorable, and educate people about you and what you do, so presenting yourself through these channels in the most professional way possible is critical. “It’s important to decide early on how you want to present yourself,” says Mahloch. “The beauty industry is huge, and with such a large number of beauty professionals out there, developing a personal brand that is captivating and unique is one of the best ways for professionals to set themselves apart.”

STEP 3: LET’S TALK COMMUNICATING YOUR BRAND

90 |

NAILS MAGAZINE

|

Now that you’ve fgured out the foundation of your brand, it’s time to think about how you will defne it to someone else and how you will communicate your branding message. You won’t become known and respected if you don’t know the unique value you provide and how to connect that value to your audience. Your brand should be authentic to you — relevant, unique, and able to evolve as you grow professionally. Your goal is to create avenues along which you can create value and brand yourself for where you are going, not where you are currently. When communicating your personal brand, it is important that you develop a niche and connect yourself to a topic or skill for which you want to be known. Ask yourself early on what you want to be known for in the beauty industry. For example, do you want to be known for amazing nail art designs, be recognized as a leader in natural nail care services, or identifed as the premier celebrity nail tech? Is there an underOCTOBER 2015

served or neglected area of the beauty market you can serve? “Make it immediately clear what your niche is,” says Mahloch. “It’s important to understand what audience you are trying to reach. Once you have this fgured out, it’s a lot easier to speak to that group and really make a name for yourself.” By developing a niche, you can provide more value to your clients because you have honed your expertise in an area relevant to them. Don’t be a jack-of-all-trades, be an expert! Become the “go-to” person on your subject matter.

STEP 4: MAINTAIN MANAGING YOUR BRAND After you have decided what tools to use and how to use those tools to communicate your brand, managing it is an ongoing task. Not only are you responsible for continuing to grow your brand and keeping your tools current, but you are also responsible for reputation management. Your audience needs

to see you continue to grow and evolve, and through your work you can make sure your reputation precedes you in a positive way. The three most important things beauty professionals must do to manage a personal brand are to maintain an online presence, engage, and show involvement. Always keep social media updates relevant and provide valuable information to your target audience. Also, share information or comment on posts and blogs of other infuencers in the beauty industry. “Media and avenues for getting information out change so quickly, so it is important to stay ahead and to stay in front of the right audience,” Mahloch says. Networking on- and offine is a very

important factor in engagement and involvement. Bring what you do offine to the online arena and create value through those experiences for your online fans. Mahloch continues, “Make sure you are aware of industry events in your area. This will help you build relationships and build your brand.” Everything you do becomes part of how you are communicating your brand — from the way you handle phone calls and social media posts to the way you conduct business in a meeting. Your network of colleagues, clients, and friends is the most important marketing tool you have, and what they have to say about you and your contributions is what the market will ultimately use to gauge the value of your personal brand.

Be Part of the Scene at Polished Nail Bar Refned is the word that comes to mind upon entering the minimalistic and ultra-trendy Polished Nail Bar. Owners Sonny Kim and Haley Tran are veteran nail technicians who have made a name for themselves in Charlotte, N.C., as a result of their innovative approach to doing nails. BY KAT SANDOVAL THE SCOOP: With a combined total of 35 years in the nail industry, both Sonny Kim and his wife Haley Tran know a thing or two about their industry and their market. And from that experience came their desire to reimagine and create something of their own. The frst step was to create a space to bring the couple’s ideas to life. Polished Nail Bar became a reality in May 2004 with the launch of their frst location in Charlotte. Fast forward to 2012 when Kim and Tran opened the doors to their fourth successful location.

Polished doesn’t focus much on designing or nail art. Instead, Kim and Tran’s emphasis is on providing a clean environment with quality service. “Ninety-fve percent of our clients receive manicure and pedicure services,” says Kim. “We have an 80% to 90% client retention rate. We even have out-of-state bookings.”

THE ’HOOD: With its cosmopolitan vibe, Charlotte is the perfect place for Polished’s nail bars. The fast-growing community currently hosts four locations, with two more opening soon. With their experience in the industry, Kim and Tran know that targeting newly developed areas will allow them to build longstanding connections with an array of clients. The new locations will feature a state-of-the-art ventilation system that eliminates vapors and odors — for the sake of both the employees and salon clients. Polished’s older locations are also being retro-ftted with the systems.

THE MENU: Polished Nail Bar’s menu features fve sections: nail bar, massages, facials, waxing, and eyelashes. Prices start at $15 for a basic manicure and $25 for a pedicure, with a $35 combo price for both. It also offers organic manicures and pedicures for expectant mothers or chemically sensitive salon-goers. Man-E-Cures were designed to appeal to the nail bar’s burgeoning male clientele and specially priced services are available for little divas aged 10 and under. Polished was one of the frst salons to offer mink eyelash extensions, and it also offers threading.

THE STAFF: Kim has 24 employees at each location, whom he considers to be family. He gets to know salon employees on a personal basis at staff-only events and in the dayto-day operations of Polished. “We do a lot of events outside of work for our employees,” says Kim. “We strive to provide an enjoyable environment for all.” Kim encourages his nail technicians to continue their education. As a group, they attend trade shows like CosmoProf North America in Las Vegas.

THE SPACE: Kim is in charge of design and decor for all of Polished Nail Bar’s locations. His background as a nail technician allows him to understand what clients do and don’t like. In conceptualizing the design and look of Polished’s Ballantyne location, Kim set out to create a minimalistic yet trendy space for customers and employees to enjoy themselves in. “We are younger salon owners and we wanted to appeal to that demographic. So we opted for an ultra-modern look,” he notes. The walls are off-white and the pedicure and manicure stations all complement the pristine atmosphere. Their motto — look clean and be clean — speaks for itself. With three spa rooms, 31 pedicure chairs that double as manicure stations, and a nail bar, the location can accommodate parties for all occasions.

1

THE EXTRAS: The salon’s website contains a weekly schedule of the special events and offerings. Sunday afternoon is set aside for beer and pedicures, for example, while Thursdays are dedicated to girls’ nights. Polished’s owners also recently formulated their own gel top and base coat because they wanted to provide clients with something reliable and durable. “We retain clients because of our top and base coats,” says Kim. “We are known for having the best gel products in our area.” Above all, clients appreciate the complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks.

3

THE CLIENTELE: Welcoming former suburbanites, housewives, and men looking to catch the latest football game, Polished Nail Bar hosts clients from many different backgrounds. Kim estimates that 20% of Polished Ballantyne’s clients are under the age of 18. “Our male clients are 20% to 30% of our business now,” says Kim. “If you walk into our salon at any time, you will spot at least one man receiving services.” The salon is also able to host large groups, making it a social hub.

Belava’s Marbled Jade Pedicure Tub accommodates the company’s sanitary disposable liners.

California Board Eases Pedi Liner Sanitation Rules As of July 1, California nail techs using disposable pedicure liners can skip the 10-minute disinfecting soak of their pedicure basin between clients. This long-awaited clarifcation of the rules was one of a number of changes instituted by the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology that afect nail techs’ day-to-day business and safety procedures. “It’s very exciting to have the new liner legislation in place in California,” says Belava’s Alison Till-Harris. “We often heard complaints from technicians who were given citations during inspections for not completely cleaning and disinfecting the pedicure tub even though they were using a new disposable liner for each customer, creating a barrier between the tub and the pedicure soak.” Under the new legislation, once the pedicure liner has been disposed of, the tub must be scrubbed of visible debris with a brush and liquid soap, then rinsed and wiped with a dry paper towel. In addition the salon must maintain at least fve liners per tub. “The most important rule to follow is to keep a current Pedicure Equipment Cleaning

We have forms available for download on our website,” says Till-Harris. “It’s very important to understand that only approved liners can be used — a trash bag is not considered appropriate, as it can tear very easily,” notes safety and compliance expert Monika Herzog Butler, founder of Salon Inspector, LLC (www. saloninspector.com). “Only liners specifcally manufactured for disposable systems are permitted for use and the salon must stock enough liners to ensure a new liner can be used for each client. In addition, the regulations specify that pedicure tubs must be stored in a clean and covered place. I recommended to my clients to free up space inside a cabinet — just covering the tubs might not be considered sufcient by an inspector.” To see a detailed explanation of the California Board’s revised health and safety regulations, including several minor modifcations to standard disinfection procedures, go to www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/laws_regs/hs_explanation.pdf.

Look It Up: Subungual Hematoma

835 reader questions answered

393 covers to view

A subungual hematoma is a collection of blood that forms under a fngernail or toenail when damage occurs to the nail and the skin beneath the nail begins bleeding. The blood pools under the nail and can cause severe pain and intense pressure. Most commonly the damage occurs due to blunt trauma (like slamming a fnger in a car door) or through repetitive pressure (for example, running while wearing shoes that are too small). If the hematoma is small and the nail isn’t in danger of falling of, no treatment may be required. In more serious cases, the fnger can become warm and pressure can build. This may mean the nail will need to be punctured by a doctor to drain the blood. If you feel heat when you touch a client’s fnger, or if the client complains of pain, refer her to a doctor. Assuming the client arrives with a subungual hematoma that is no longer causing her pain, you should shorten the nail and remove any product. Applying product over this type of injury could trap bacteria between the nail plate and the nail bed, especially if the nail has been punctured to drain the blood. For more information about this topic, log on to www.nailsmag.com/encyclopedia and search “subungual hematoma.”

The ingredient sea fennel acts as a free radical interceptor and cellulose activator, healing dry or irritated skin. It also contains hyaluronic acid, providing optimal moisture. Grape seed oil and rosehip seed oil combat the signs of premature aging of skin, binding moisture in the cells, while vitamin E supports the regeneration of cells. In addition, the ingredient allantoin has a skin-calming efect. These nourishing elements are immediately absorbed into skin, leaving a pleasant, fresh sensation without any greasiness or stickiness. A Doctor’s Advice on Soothing Irritated Hands As nail techs know only too well, hands that are subjected to frequent hand-washing and glove use all day can become irritated. “Overexposure to water, friction, dry air, soaps, detergents, solvents, cleaning agents, personal care products, and chemicals used in the workplace are all potential causes of hand rashes and hand dermatitis,” says Patricia Norris, M.D., a Portland, Ore.-based dermatologist and assistant Norris professor in dermatology at Oregon Health & Science University. There are many diferent types of hand dermatitis, she notes, including irritant hand dermatitis, atopic hand dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, frictional hand dermatitis, and dyshidrotic hand dermatitis. “Once the skin becomes red and dry, even so-called ‘harmless’ things — like water from frequent hand-washing — can be irritating rather than soothing,” she says. Below are some of her tips to keep your hands in tiptop shape. HAND-WASHING: > Remove your rings from your fngers when washing your hands. Trapped soap and moisture underneath jewelry can cause irritation. Use lukewarm water and rinse hands thoroughly after washing with soap. > Avoid detergents, perfumed soaps, harsh soaps, and deodorant soaps. When these products are used excessively, they can cause more dryness by reducing the natural oils in your skin. Instead, try soaps that contain moisturizers, such as CeraVe, Cetaphil, and Vanicream. Whenever possible, wash with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser or Aquanil Cleanser in place of water. These products are designed for use on sensitive skin and are soap- and lipid-free. They do not need to be washed of with water. When drying your hands, blot dry with a towel. > Immediately apply a greasy moisturizer. While your skin is still damp, the moisturizer will penetrate better. Use products such as plain Vaseline petroleum jelly, CeraVe, Cetaphil Cream, or Vanicream. CREAMS, LOTIONS, AND MOISTURIZERS: The rule of thumb for moisturizers is the greasier the product, the better it is at moisturizing. Cream-based moisturizers should be applied immediately after hand-washing, bathing, and removing gloves. One of the best products you can use is an ointment-based product such as white petrolatum jelly (Vaseline). In addition, you can help signifcantly reduce any dryness and/or irritation with the night-time use of white petrolatum jelly. Apply it to the hands, then cover them with cotton gloves. Lotion-based products are the least efective. Lotions evaporate from the skin, as opposed to “rubbing-in.” Many lotions have up to 80% water as their main ingredient. The evaporation from the water in a lotion may cause more drying of the skin over time. GLOVE USE: Gloves are very helpful in protecting your hands from exposure to irritating chemicals and water. However, if you wear the gloves for extended periods of time, your hands may sweat, and this sweating may worsen hand dermatitis or hand eczema. Many people think they are allergic to latex when their hands break out from glove use. But often the rash from gloves is an irritation from wetting and drying inside the glove and not a true allergy. Allergy to latex is very serious and can lead to a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis. Allergic contact dermatitis from gloves appears as a rash on the top of the hands that is itchy and weepy and lasts for days to weeks. Allergic contact dermatitis from gloves is often due to one of the chemicals used to process both latex and nitrile (synthetic) gloves. Patch testing helps sort this problem out. I recommend wearing a glove that is allergen-free, like N-Dex Free Nitrile Glove or N-Dex Nighthawk Nitrile Glove. (Avoid powdered and latex gloves.) I also recommend wearing a cotton liner inside the rubber glove (available at www.myskinallergy.com). Dr. Norris ofers more skin care advice at www.patricianorris.com/blog. OCTOBER 2015

HEALTH} something to talk about Athlete’s Foot

Nearly 70% of adults will experience athlete’s foot at some point in their life. But how do you break the news to a client that she has fungus on her feet?

The skin on your client’s feet looks dry, red, and cracked. She complains it bothers her because it’s so itchy. You’re confident it’s a treatable case of athlete’s foot, and you know exactly what she needs to do to clear it up. How do you let her know the best way to treat the fungus? The short answer is: You don’t. “Nail professionals are not allowed to diagnose, treat, or prescribe treatment for any unhealthy medical condition,” industry scientist Doug Schoon reminds us. Bearing the legal limitations of our license in mind, let’s imagine how the conversation may look:

Client: Is there a lotion you can recommend for my feet? My skin is so dry it’s cracking.

You: Yes, I can see it’s red and flaking. Have you been to a doctor to check if it’s just dry skin? Sometimes we mistake athlete’s foot and eczema for dry skin. It could be a condition that needs treatment stronger than moisturizer.

Client: No, I haven’t been to the doctor. I’m pretty sure it’s only dry skin though. Isn’t athlete’s foot only between the toes? This is on my whole foot, even the heel.

You: Athlete’s foot is tricky. It has similar symptoms to dry skin: flaky or cracked skin, redness, and itchiness. Sometimes even doctors have a hard time making a diagnosis. Athlete’s foot can be over the entire foot. It’s not limited to just between the toes, though often it does start there. I can’t diagnose the condition or even offer you any advice on how to treat it, but I can say this: You’ve been treating it as if it is dry skin and it hasn’t improved. If you assume it’s athlete’s foot and care for it as such, it won’t cause your dry skin any harm — but it may clear up your skin. If it does clear up, you’ll know it was likely athlete’s foot.

Client: How would I care for it? You: Here’s the advice I can offer you. It’s basic “best care” practice for the skin on our feet in general. Your best bet is to wash your feet with soap and water twice a day and be meticulous about drying the skin and keeping it dry throughout the day. You can aid this by wearing shoes that fit properly, rather than, say, a heel that will restrict movement in the toes. Wear socks that wick moisture away from the skin and alternate between a couple of pairs of shoes to give the shoes time to dry out. You’ve been using moisturizer thinking your skin is dry, and it hasn’t improved. Go a couple of weeks without using the moisturizer and keeping your feet dry to see what happens. If it doesn’t clear up within two weeks, give your doctor a call. It’s likely something more complicated than dry skin. After assessing your skin, she may suggest using an over-the-counter antifungal cream, powder, or spray, such as Lotrimin. She may even give you a prescription. Client: Call my doctor? Isn’t that a bit excessive? You: Not really. If it’s athlete’s foot, that’s a fungal infection. It can worsen, which is something you’ll want to avoid. Athlete’s foot can spread, which can put your family members and my other clients at risk. Better to know that you are treating your skin for the correct condition than hoping that what you’re doing is effective.

Need We Say More?

HEALTH} A Day in the Life of a Nail Expert In this month’s column, Dr. Stern discusses who is particularly at risk to contract nail fungus and what treatment options are available to those who do get it. BY DR. DANA STERN

Dermatologists treat skin, hair, and nails. I am a board-certifed dermatologist and I specialize in the treatment of nail disorders including infammatory diseases of the nail, cosmetic issues, cancers of the nail, sports-related injuries, and nail infections. Stern

When we think about nail infections, fungus is probably what first comes to mind. It turns out that onychomycosis (nail fungus) is extremely common, as an estimated 35 million people in the U.S. are infected. It’s important to understand what makes us vulnerable to nail fungus, and why it’s important to treat it. Several treatment options are currently available, each offering pros and cons. Who Is Vulnerable? We are all exposed to fungus in our environment, yet not everyone acquires the infection. Our vulnerability is dependent on the complex interplay between our genetics, age, habits, other medical issues, and the environment. Simply being older is a risk factor, as more than 50% of nail fungus cases are seen in those over the age of 70. As we age, our toenails change due to years of chronic, repetitive micro trauma. Once the nail starts to grow abnormally, we become vulnerable to acquiring fungus. Aging also brings slower nail growth, another factor that predisposes a person to fungal acquisition. Certain medical conditions can also make us more susceptible to fungus, such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, psoriasis, and HIV. Toenail trauma, common with certain athletic activities, such as tennis, skiing, and running, can lead to onychomycosis. Once the nail is damaged and lifted away from the nail bed, the protective barrier is compromised and fungus in the environment or on neighboring skin can enter the nail unit. Excessive foot sweating, poor hygiene, and unprotected communal exposure (i.e., bare feet in the gym locker room) can also put a person at risk.

Why Treat Fungus? For many, nail fungus is cosmetically unappealing and the rationale to treat it is purely for aesthetic reasons. Most sufferers do not realize there are important medical reasons why treatment can be imperative. For one, fungus can spread to other toenails, the hands, the fingernails, or other skin sites. Thick, infected nails can be hard to maintain, may become painful, and can even make walking difficult. Fungus on the toenails is also a very common cause of bacterial infections on the skin at the lower legs (lower extremity cellulitis). This occurs when microscopic breaks in the skin become infected with bacteria. Treatment Options Treatment options can be divided into three categories: oral agents, topical agents, and non-pharmacologic approaches to therapy. Oral agents are prescriptions pills such as Terbinafine (Lamisil), Itraconazole, or Fluconazole. These are medications that must be prescribed by a physician. We have a lot of experience with these medications as they have been on the market for years. Dosing and treatment duration depends on the type of fungus and the severity of the case being treated. These oral medications have had rare but serious side effects associated with them, including liver and cardiac toxicity; therefore, laboratory monitoring is important. Also, these oral agents can interact with other common medications. For these reasons, many patients and physicians shy away from oral agents and prefer to use topical therapies.

Topical fungal medications are advantageous because they have fewer side effects and do not require laboratory monitoring. The disadvantage is that they are less effective and patients tend to be less compliant with these treatments because the treatment courses are longer. Until recently, the only prescription topical antifungal agent that was approved in the U.S. was Ciclopirox lacquer (Penlac). More recently, two new prescription topical antifungals have been approved and have demonstrated superior efficacy. Efinaconazole 10% solution (Jublia) was approved in June 2014 and Tavaborole 5% solution (Kerydin) was approved in July 2014 for the treatment of onychomycosis. For toenails, treatment is daily for 48 weeks. Both of these drugs have very safe profiles and are exciting additions to our antifungal arsenal. Non-pharmacologic approaches to therapy include mechanical nail removal, laser treatment, and chemical removal of the nail. Mechanical nail removal — surgical removal of the

nail plate — tends to be a method that is favored by podiatrists. The procedure requires numbing the toe and removing the nail in order to reduce fungal load and remove a very thick nail that is not likely to respond well to therapy. When toenails are extremely thick and it is less likely that a topical medication will be able to penetrate effectively, this can be a beneficial option. Lasers always have appeal to consumers because they are high-tech and thought of as the latest in technology. Currently, short-pulse Nd-Yag lasers are approved in the U.S. for the temporary improvement of fungal nails. These devices are still considered controversial, as their efficacy is questionable and many believe that they have not yet been adequately studied. The last of the non-pharmacologic approaches, chemical removal, involves using a urea-based prescription cream and applying it to the nail repetitively. Urea breaks down keratin and can soften even very thick nails. Over time the nail will crumble and become easier to remove without the need for surgery.

HEALTH} Healthy Living:

Vein Disease

Performing nail services requires you to sit all day, and staying in one position too long is one of the risk factors for developing vein diseases, such as varicose veins. Age, diet, weight, and other factors also play into the odds. Learn to identify your risk factors and recognize and treat these unsightly, sometimes painful veins.

TECH TIPS:

Since I started doing nails three years ago, I have developed a few spider veins on my thighs and one large varicose vein behind my knee. I also had a baby eight months ago, so I’m sure the combination of sitting all day and my pregnancy contributed to it. They aren’t really painful or itchy, but I do feel selfconscious about them when I’m wearing a shorter skirt or bathing suit, so I’m planning on getting surgery to remove them soon. It’s a lot more affordable than I thought and totally worth it to me.

Kimberly Johnson

Nails by Kim, Sarasota, Fla.

I have benign vascular tumors on several parts of my body, mostly my legs, arms, and my left buttock. They are like large purple/blue bruises, but they never go away and only get larger. These tumors are sometimes painful randomly or if I hit them on a chair leg or something. They also sometimes throb if I’m too hot. I have had them operated on so the pain is very rare now, but I’m careful about sitting for long periods of time when doing nails. My best advice for anyone with vein disorders is to move around as often as possible to keep circulation moving.

Alayna Josz

EXPERT OPINION: Vein disease most commonly presents as varicose veins — gnarled, enlarged veins that are found mostly on the legs and feet — and spider veins, which are a common, milder form of varicose veins. For many people, these veins are simply a cosmetic concern; for others, varicose veins can cause much pain and discomfort, and may even signal overall circulatory problems. For this reason, it’s important to consult with a physician if you are experiencing a sudden or increased number of varicose veins. According to Larisse K. Lee, MD, RPVI, founder and medical director of L.A. Vein Center in Los Angeles, there are many risk factors for venous disease. These include heredity, pregnancy, female gender, aging, obesity, and sedentary occupation. People who stand or sit for prolonged periods are at higher risk for developing varicose and spider veins, so nail techs often suffer from this condition. Lee says that varicose and spider veins are often the symptom of an underlying venous disorder called venous reflux. This condition occurs when one-way valves in the veins become damaged, which allows blood to flow backward toward the feet. Venous reflux can result in symptoms such as leg pain, fatigue, heaviness, itching, cramping, and restless legs. It can also cause physical changes to the legs including spider veins, varicose veins, and leg swelling. “In more advanced cases, people can develop skin changes, including thickening and darkening of the skin near the ankle, which can ultimately develop into venous stasis ulcers,” says Lee. “The skin damage tends to be irreversible, so treatment prior to this stage is preferable. Also, some people can develop bleeding or blood clots from their varicose veins.” The good news, according to Lee, is that treatment for symptomatic varicose veins has advanced significantly in the past decade. Treatment is minimally invasive now, performed under local anesthesia in less than an hour, allowing patients to get back to work and their normal lives quickly. Tips for preventing and treating vein disorders: > The best ways to prevent varicose veins are to wear compression stockings, elevate the legs, walk frequently, exercise, avoid sitting or standing in one position for more than 30 minutes, and maintain a good diet and healthy weight. > To correct the underlying venous reflux, the problematic vein is closed in a procedure called endovenous ablation. Bulging varicose veins are then removed through tiny incisions in a procedure called phlebectomy. For spider vein treatment, sclerotherapy is performed, which involves injections to seal the veins, or laser therapy.

Suggested Reading: Say Goodbye to Varicose & Spider Veins Now! By Greg Martin, MD Since 1986, Martin has performed more than 6,000 varicose vein procedures and tens of thousands of spider vein procedures. In an engaging and understandable style, Martin discusses risk factors and symptoms of leg vein disease, offers some preventive measures, and explains the latest treatment procedures. Supplementary illustrations also help readers visualize what occurs when veins are not functioning properly. This book is an excellent resource for anyone suffering from vein disease.

Imagine Dominique Jones, owner of a small salon in a medium-sized town. Her clients are happy and her employees are friendly, so she doesn’t really worry about the online world. The salon has enough business that she doesn’t even advertise. When one nail tech leaves and she hires someone new, Dominique doesn’t worry much even when things get a little quiet. If she took the time to check out her online reviews, though, she might realize that clients aren’t happy with the new technician — she’s too focused on upselling and isn’t making the efort to remember them. By staying ofine, Dominique is missing out on valuable information that customers are providing about her business — for free. Review sites are powerful marketing tools and they’re here to stay. As of this year, more than 77 million reviews are available for clients to read before deciding where to spend their dollars. Nine percent of all Yelp reviews cover the beauty and ftness category, according to company research. Use these forums to your advantage by peeking inside the mind of the consumer to see what matters most to her. It may not be what you expect. REVIEW 1: A three-star rating might not seem great, but most customer experiences are just that — fne, nothing special. > This three-paragraph review contains four references to speed and timing. Are you getting clients in and out of your salon as quickly as they’d like? > Cleanliness was mentioned second, before decor or service quality. Take a fresh look at the initial impression your salon makes. It should be spotlessly clean. > The reviewer mentions the manicurist by name. Are your staf members faceless or are they memorable after even a single interaction? > Pricing is a factor, but not a deal-breaker. Menus should be designed to ofer services at a variety of price points.

REVIEW 2: A long review isn’t necessarily better or worse, it just refects a personality diference among reviewers. > Parking and signage are as important as being able to deliver a quality manicure. Does your website give new clients enough information to navigate easily to your front door? Are parking options discussed when an initial appointment is made by phone? > A client’s initial impression begins with the exterior of the salon, so strip mall or no, you’ve got to begin your branding eforts there. > The frst thing to catch the reviewer’s eye was the shoulder and neck massages. Whether you’re massaging hands or feet, give it your best. Clients often cite the massage portion of the service as a primary reason they keep coming back. > Learn to read your customer. This reviewer didn’t want to be upsold and didn’t want to have her polish choice questioned. Practice dialog that makes your customer service come across as natural and professional, but be prepared to abandon the script if the client isn’t responsive.

> Why didn’t that Groupon user come back? In some cases they’re price shoppers, but in this instance it was the quality of the service that turned the client of. Are service issues a recurring theme in your reviews?

REVIEW 3: A short review gives you less to work with, but you can still get a few clues. > This reviewer was “blown away” by having her choice of the latest nail options. Are you keeping current on the latest trends or simply doing what you’ve always done? > Again, cleanliness is top of mind in new clients. Remain vigilant about your cleaning routine — and check the bathroom several times a day. > There’s nothing better than a review with an explicit and unqualifed recommendation. It’s natural to sing the praises of those things we love the most. If word-of-mouth isn’t growing your business, then you need to reassess your business model.

REVIEW 4: This positive review is all about service — making clients feel pampered and special. > A welcoming staf and a relaxing atmosphere are the keys to a great experience for this reviewer. Both features require little or no money to put into place, yet make a huge diference in whether customers will want to return. > A little fexibility goes a long way — in this case it’s permission to bring alcohol that seals the deal. Clients don’t fail to notice when you go above and beyond. > A secluded room was just the thing for this bunch. Do you have a special spot for groups, or a way to provide privacy to individuals who prefer not to socialize? > It sounds like this client would have been willing to pay more. Are you undervaluing your oferings? > This reviewer missed having background music — a great nugget of constructive criticism and a reminder to appeal to all the senses.

TAKE THE HIGHER GROUND It can be frustrating to read negative reviews of your business when you know someone isn’t telling the whole story — like how she was thirty minutes late, kept changing her mind, and yelled at you. But as a business owner, you have to take the more mature position. If you choose to respond, make sure you write back to all reviewers rather than just the nasty ones. A simple message like, “I’m sorry you were unhappy,” doesn’t mean you accept blame and will make you look caring and professional. You may want to reach out to any reviewers with legitimate complaints and ofer to make things right.

REVIEW 5: Personal attention and phenomenal customer service are the hallmarks of a successful salon. > Some of us are better than others at remembering our clients’ personal biographies, but for many clients this little touch means a lot. Consider adopting a system to note birthdays, family details, and past services. > Exceptional skills are always worthy of a shout-out. This reviewer singles out the new nail artist for praise. > Freebies like a free parafn treatment with every pedicure go far to ensure customer loyalty.

REVIEW 6: This extreme example demonstrates a clear need for ongoing training and systems that promote consistency. > Temperature was an issue for this client. Do you have the ability to warm up cold hands or furnish a heated neck wrap? Can you cool clients with an ice cold drink in the summer months? > As the reviewer notes, just because you open your doors doesn’t mean you’re ready for business. Do you get in early enough to complete your pre-opening routine? > Being touched by someone who is clearly unhappy to be at work is an unpleasant experience. We all have bad days, but we need to learn how not to infict our moods on others. > No one cares about price and convenience if customer service basics are overlooked. Salon clients are paying for an experience, not just a few slaps of polish.

OCTOBER 2015

Kathy’s Story I found out I had breast cancer when I turned 39 and had two girls under the age of four. My mother and sister were diagnosed with breast cancer previously, and they urged me to have a prophylactic mastectomy — but at the age of 22, I was so young, naive, and stubborn that I refused. Needless to say, after my diagnosis, I elected to have a double mastectomy with chemotherapy and radiation. I was diagnosed as stage 3A and estrogen receptor positive, which meant that after my chemotherapy and radiation, I was to take Tamoxifen for five years. An important thing I have to share with everyone reading my story is that you have to be your own medical advocate. I got three different opinions from three surgeons. One was a regular surgeon whom I despised immediately, as he said he could see why I wanted to have a double mastectomy, but he would not do them both at the same time because of contamination of instruments. I know: You’re scratching your head with this ludicrous comment. I also sought an opinion from my mother’s and sister’s surgical oncologist at the John Wayne Cancer Clinic at UCLA. He found out that I had precancer cells in my left breast. I finally made my decision by interviewing a third doctor who was an oncological breast cancer surgeon. I elected to have reconstruction at the same time as my mastectomy. The emotional trauma I experienced afterward was intense. I had 1-year-old Becca, and Hanna was going to be 5 and starting kindergarten. How could I possibly take care of these two angels and yet heal myself from the scars of my surgeries and impending chemotherapy and radiation? But I did it. I had no choice. I didn’t want to die. Would I have done anything differently? Maybe. I may not have done breast reconstruction at the time of surgery. I ended up having two additional reconstructions done because one leaked and the other had skin so thin from radiation treatment that you could see through a tiny hole in my implant. The second reconstruction was horrible. They did a latismus flap procedure, which meant they took some muscle, skin, and fat tissue from my back, brought it around to the front, and created a new skin/pocket for the new breast implant. It was extremely painful and took a long time to heal. I would tell anyone facing the challenge of breast cancer that support — friends, family, Facebook, etc. — are very important in keeping a positive attitude. I have been an advocate for other women who have been newly diagnosed, sometimes just holding their hands, as they just wanted someone to talk to who knew what it was like to go through breast cancer. The one thing that got most of them through it was having a little bit of faith — not thinking it was a death sentence. Breast cancer is curable. Check and feel yourself. Know your breasts. Get checked out.

Frances’s Story

The idea of reaching and possibly helping anyone with my story helps to make up for the pain

In April 2014, I received an email from my aunt telling me that she had breast cancer for the second time in 16 years. She urged me to get a baseline mammogram just so we’d have it. After the initial shock wore off, and she reassured me that she would be fine, I made an appointment for a mammogram so I could send it to her and tell her to “Leave my boobs out of this!” One mammogram, an ultrasound, and a biopsy later, I was diagnosed with breast cancer on August 5, 2014. I am BRCA 1 positive and was Stage 2b. I opted for a double mastectomy because of my aunt’s experience and started last Breast Cancer Awareness month off with my surgery (it was on October 1st). A few weeks after my surgery, several friends, family members, spa/nail team members, and a couple of clients participated with me in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Johnson City, Tenn. as Team Frances. We raised about $1,000 and are incredibly thankful for the support and for anything we can contribute toward this cause, because now more than ever, it’s so close to our hearts. I had to take two months off work after my double mastectomy, and I missed my clients and coworkers terribly. I worked through chemotherapy and now I’m undergoing radiation. In May, I had to take two weeks off for breast reconstruction, and even after being cleared by my doctor, I had to reassure a few clients that I was fine to do their appointments! I’ll never be able to thank them properly, so the idea of publicly thanking them through this article means so much. I am currently closer to the end than the beginning of my 25 radiation treatments and still have a hysterectomy (BRCA 1+ patients have a 35-70% higher chance of getting ovarian cancer, so I’m taking precautions) and possibly another breast reconstruction left. I went through fourteen chemotherapy treatments from October 2014 to March 2015 and am still in disbelief at how fast this year has gone by. As much as I hate that my aunt (Dr. Lynn Dahl of Cape Coral, Fla.) had to go through this again, she is my angel, and she is doing great. She has been my example, and I’m so happy to say I’m that much closer each day to total health. I am so thankful to be able to share our story to encourage early detection, genetic testing if it’s called for, and simple awareness that you have to be your own advocate for your health. The idea of reaching and possibly helping anyone with my story helps to make up for the pain of this past year. I want to encourage everyone to get their yearly checkup. I’m 32, and if it hadn’t been for my aunt’s second run at this, I would not have known when I did. Some days it terrifies me, but for the most part it just reminds me of how grateful and lucky I am for my family, my friends, and my spa/nail family near and far who provided so much love and support.

Karen’s Story In November, 2007, I was diagnosed with invasive Stage II breast cancer. It all started in October of that year when my good friend told me she’d been diagnosed. I decided I should get a mammogram, and the next day, the doctor called me to say that there was a suspicious mass in my right breast and that I needed to see a surgeon. I had a mastectomy on November 14. It had been 10 days since I had the mammogram. Had I not had it, I most likely would have found out about this sneaky cancer too late. (You can read my entire story in the May 2008 issue of NAILS at www.nailsmag. com/KarenHodges). The article details how nail technicians from around the world rallied, and a bevy of “Helping Hands” was arranged to see me through this ordeal. Today, I am healthy and happy. Looking back with a little perspective, I’m grateful to say I never let the “Big C” define me. Yes, it was shocking and overwhelming, but I had the best support system in my fellow nail technicians and my clients. The group dubbed “Karen’s Angels” rallied around me and carried me right through. I chose to have a radical mastectomy and begged the surgeon to take the second one at the same time, but for insurance purposes, he could not. We sent away samples for analysis and they said, “You have an 80% chance of it recurring in your other breast.” I called my surgeon and asked, “Now will you take the other one?” During the removal of my second breast, a plastic surgeon stepped in and inserted tissue expanders under the muscles of my chest. After healing, I had months of driving to Miami to have saline injected into the expanders, then driving home, aching. I had six months of chemotherapy, physiotherapy exercises, infections, and complications — all the while trying to keep my clientele going. After two years and 11 surgical procedures, the expanders were switched out for permanent implants, and I was able to return to my regular programming. My best advice for others facing breast cancer is to never let cancer own you. It’s just one thing; you deal with it and you focus on the good things in your life. Embrace your therapies. Manage your own care — do not rely on a single physician, but develop a team and remain the captain. Honor your body and listen to its messages — when you are tired, take a nap. Never stop doing what you love, even when the process is all-consuming. I truly feel that knowing I’d be seeing my clients kept me going every day. I am grateful to be here and living with a 2% chance of cancer cropping up again. I am still attempting to dig out of the financial hole created by medical bills and missing work. My career has shifted — I am in the salon only part-time and am very busy developing my online educational training courses at salongurus. com. I’m very hopeful for the future!

Looking back with a little perspective, I’m grateful to say I never let the “Big C” define me.

Dealing With DIFFICULT CLIENTS

“does she not see the other clients trying to relax?!”

Everyone has that one client who is demanding,

rude, disrespectful, or perpetually late. We’ll give you four techniques to soothe the situation

Liza Lott walks in 10 minutes late, fushed, and quick to deliver an excuse. “You wouldn’t believe the traffc today!” she exclaims. Her

rather than seethe on the inside.

entrance disrupts another client who is peacefully enjoying a pedicure. “Oh, and you’re going to hate me!” she continues. “I don’t even want to show you my nails! Three of them just popped off! You must have done something different last time.” Did a particular client come to your mind when you imagined this scenario? Was your initial reaction to frown or to smile? The answer to this question is important because it’s your response that determines how this story ends. If you’re impatient, you’ll reveal that you don’t believe the traffc was congested and that you were annoyed by the subtle implication that your workmanship is mediocre. That attitude is going to result in a negative experience for both you and your client. You have the power to create a positive outcome — if you can hold it together and respond politely and professionally.

HERE’S HOW: SHIFT THE PARADIGM

LISTEN WITH EMPATHY

We work in a service industry where that universal mantra is “the customer is always right.” And, even when they clearly aren’t right, the expectation is the service provider will respond with an affrmative head nod and a polite, “yes, madam” in a tone that would do an English butler proud. When reality pushes up against that paradigm, clients are frustrated, thinking they’ve received poor customer service. Conversely, it can be shocking when a client with otherwise good manners is completely bereft of self-awareness. The job of the tech, then, is to agree on mutual expectations, which may require a shift in paradigm. This happens early in the relationship, ideally during the frst encounter. “Establishing a healthy, professional boundary initially is one way to avoid disrespectful treatment later in the relationship,” says Aimee Villemure, a Sarasota, Fla.-based Licensed Clinical Social Worker with expertise in mediation and confict resolution. “When you speak, assume a confdent posture, and when possible, maintain eye contact. This will help you garner respect.” During the client’s frst appointment, take the time to set realistic expectations. Explain the importance of being on time, at-home care, and salon or spa etiquette. This is the time to explain nails aren’t tools, and the importance of protecting them from harsh household chemicals, such as paint thinners, acetone, etc. Clients will learn what types of things would likely break their nails or ruin their manicure. Ninety percent of them will understand. Some clients, however, those few we like to call “special,” won’t respond well. They’ll continue to be perpetually late. They’ll break their nails and blame you. They’ll ask for nails to be extended too long. They’ll want to bring their pets. They’ll want to talk on the phone. When this happens, call upon your training and professionalism to stop the situation from spiraling out of control.

“It’s so important to be empathetic when dealing with diffcult clients,” says Lan Pratt, owner of Pure Natural Nail Lounge in St. Petersburg, Fla. “Saying you’re sorry and showing empathy doesn’t mean you’re apologizing for something you’ve done. It means you understand a customer’s position.” “I try to get my staff to understand that everyone comes in here with a story,” explains Pratt. “We don’t know what happened earlier in the day; we don’t know what’s going on in their lives. What we do know is we’re here to relieve stress, so we try to relate to diffcult clients in a way that defuses the situation.” Nail tech Ashlee McMichael agrees. “We can help clients have an attitude adjustment if we respond well,” she says. Her background working with autistic adults and at-risk youth has helped train McMichael to succeed in her current position at Bella Trio in Durham, N.C. McMichael recalls a story of a client who was unintentionally offensive. “My client realized I have an 11-year-old son, but had been married only nine years,” recalls McMichael. “She asked if I had considered giving up my son for adoption. It took a lot for me to stay calm, but I tried to understand why she would ask that type of question and then gave her the respect of a polite response.”

KILL THEM WITH KINDNESS “I fnd there are two types of diffcult clients,” says Denize Lemos, owner of LaPlaya Spa on Siesta Key in Sarasota, Fla. “One complains about things that are legitimate — things that can be changed. The other complains because something is wrong in her story. She’s had a bad day; she has stress in her life. She may feel out of control, and you are the only person she can vent to.” Lemos says her goal is to “listen, own, educate.” “I have to put myself aside,” she explains. “We are in the service industry. If a client complains, even if she complains all the time, I

OCTOBER 2015

just listen and see how I can satisfy her. Sometimes, a client wants the red carpet rolled out for her. And you know what, I roll out the carpet. When diffcult clients come to me, I kill them with kindness and make them feel special. My reputation is too important to risk a bad review,” she says.

OFFER SOLUTIONS One particularly annoying quirk of diffcult clients is their propensity to place blame on the tech or the salon. We’ve all had those clients who come back in with chipped polish or broken nails and can’t for the life of them think of anything that may have caused the problem. It’s as if the nails self-combusted. “You can’t respond in an angry way or defensively,” says McMichael. “Instead, offer solutions.” McMichael suggests techs fx the problem either by re-polishing using a different color or by offering a complimentary repair. “I explain as I’m doing the repair or re-polish that there is usually a charge for this, but I’m waiving the fee today,” she says. Villemure suggests making a general statement, such as, “When we do certain things, it’s hard on the nails and it may cause them to pop off. The only way to avoid this is to avoid using our nails in this way.” This response may sound tolerant, but it isn’t to be confused with accommodating the client who repeats bad behavior. A tech can use the situation as a way to teach and to set the stage for future interactions. This works in nearly any situation. When a client is late, for example, Pratt and her staff try to accommodate her, but use the situation as a way to educate. “We’ll say

we understand these things happen. Then we’ll explain our position. Sometimes we let them know since a client is not booked immediately following, we have time to complete the service. Conversely, we may need to apologize and say we can’t accommodate her tardiness because we do have someone booked,” she says. Either way, the client walks away understanding her appointment reserved only a limited time on the books. Pratt says that when they can’t complete a service, there may still be a way to offer options. The tech may be able to perform a pedicure without a massage, or a manicure without polish, for example. Then it’s left for the client to decide if that’s acceptable. “Clients are usually understanding,” says Pratt. “They know it’s not the salon’s fault they were late.” To clients who answer their phones and speak loudly, despite the “no-phone zone,” McMichael provides a solution. “I suggest clients fnish their conversation in a different area of the salon, away from the other customers,” she says. “But I’ve had to go out after them to let them know to get off the phone so we can fnish the service,” McMichael laughs. When clients balk about getting off the phone, Villemure suggests soliciting empathy for other patrons. “Clients can relate to the experience of your customers,” she explains, “so they will more likely be willing to change their behavior when you explain how it impacts other clients rather than how it impacts you.” Solutions to offer a diffcult client may be to suggest a different tech (if a client regularly complains about your work). It may be scheduling a client only as your last appointment of the day (if you know she’s going to be late). The solution may be to stock the salon with distractions, such as a tablet or games (for kids who create chaos). A helpful solution could be to call a manager over (to let a client know her complaint is important to

If Your Client Is Perpetually Late… > Greet her with a warm smile

> Listen to her story with empathy > Explain politely your time constraints and her options > Avoid having an attitude during the service

If Your Client Is Constantly Complaining…

> Combat her negativity with a positive attitude and kindness > Avoid being trite and fippant; respond with empathy > Try to hear her larger problem > Be patient > Never take it personally

If Your Client Exhibits Unruly Behavior…

> Limit the number of complimentary (alcoholic) drinks you serve > Lower your voice when she raises hers > Provide alternatives (to occupy children) > Remind clients of other guests (and of the no-phone-zone policy) > Model respectful behavior to the client and other team members

If Your Client Has Unrealistic Expectations…

> Explain the “why” behind your inability to meet her request > Afrm you understand what she desires > Ofer possible alternatives

Preventative Measures:

> Create a checklist of at-home care instructions and spa etiquettes to review with new clients. > Never sacrifce service to satisfy a client. Maintain quality standards.

you). When the manager affrms your solution as a client’s best choice, this often calms the client’s frustration. “Regardless of the situation, speak in a tone that’s respectful — one without judgment,” says McMichael. And remember, sometimes you are having a bad day, so the client could be reacting to your vibe. (If you’re having

a hard day, admit it. Set up a stress reliever in the break room, such as mobility bands or a stress ball.) And remember to remain professional — in and out of the salon. The last thing you want to do is walk into a grocery store with a snarky attitude after a hard day of work and realize you have become the cashier’s diffcult client.

SPIRITED TREATMENTS Wine, beer, tequila, and even bourbon are trending as unique ingredients for premium manicures and pedicures. If you are looking to give some splash to your service oferings consider adding one of these innovative interpretations to your menu. BY PATTI BIRO

Everything about a margarita translates perfectly into a premium nail service. Lime juice is a natural fountain of youth. The citric acid in limes is a natural exfoliator and the peels help to inhibit melanin production, which can help to fade age spots. Tequila is a natural antibacterial agent, which gets an extra boost from salt — and what good margarita comes without salt? Nail salons from Mexico to Manhattan are hopping on the margarita bandwagon for manicures and pedicures. Tammy Dennis, owner of Infnity Luxury Salon in the Gorge, brings the sunny favors of Mexico to the often cloudy skies of Bingen, Wash., with her signature margarita manicures and pedicures. The Ultimate Spa Margarita Pedicure (clocking in at two hours) includes a warm foot soak with margarita crystals, a soothing foot and leg exfoliation, callus removal, a margarita moisturizing mask, heavenly hot towels, and an amazing 20-minute leg and foot massage. The matching manicure adds another hour of personalized luxury. The products used in the services are produced in Washington, adding a local fair. The “salt on the rim” of this service duo is a made-on-the-spot margarita mocktail. (Alcohol can’t be served in salons in Washington state.) Tammy’s inspired service was driven by her need to create something different and unique for her guests and visitors to tiny Bingen (population 712). “Our clients will drive as far as 45 miles to experience the margarita services and come back again and again,” she says. >>>

WINE NOT? Vinotherapy combines traditional nail services and treatments with the antioxidant benefts of wine. Wine has been consumed for thousands of years. In fact, traces of white wine residue were discovered in King Tut’s tomb. Nail services can feature wine as part of the protocol or in products. Wine, champagne, and grape seed products with enticing names such as Cabernet Crush, Merlot Magic, and Champagne Mimosa are readily available for back bar use and retail sale. If you are crafty, creative, or both, you might even try your hand at creating your own custom wine-based products. Wine consumption is a growing trend with wineries popping up in nearly every state. Wine-inspired services are tagging right along, not just for the fun factor but for the health benefts they deliver. Wine-based products may help to turn back the hands of time as they contain large amounts of concentrated antioxidants and vitamins. Nearly everyone has heard of the benefts of resveratrol, a natural plant phenol with anti-infammatory properties thought to aid in wound healing.

SPA HOPPINESS IN BEND, OREGON

Ale-ing Foot Service photo courtesy of Anjou Spa, Bend, Ore.

Not only can you enjoy drinking a local brew, you can soak in one too. Celebrating the locals’ and visitors’ love of beer, Anjou Spa has teamed up with a local craft brewer aptly named the Goodlife Brewing Company to create the Ale-ing Foot Service. It begins with a foot soak in a copper bowl flled with freshly warmed beer. Next, a custom-created scrub combining hops and fresh barley is used to smooth the feet. The fnishing touch is a foot and lower leg massage using a hops-infused lotion to leave your feet refreshed. This service is especially popular with male guests, but many ladies enjoy the chance to enjoy a little “brew renewal.” This service is loaded with health benefts as well. The yeast in beer is a natural antifungal agent, while the hops contribute anti-microbial properties and aid in relaxation. Barley is a natural anti-infammatory agent that is loaded with zinc, which helps to repair the skin. The bran of the barley is a natural exfoliator. “Most people probably aren’t aware of the therapeutic benefts of beer; there’s more to it than just great taste,” says Jenna Walden, managing partner of Anjou.

Champagne and sparkling wines get their distinctive appeal from all those tiny bubbles. As it turns out, champagne has some unique benefts that make it a perfect choice for a premium nail service. Long thought to increase blood circulation when consumed, those tiny bubbles also act as a natural exfoliating agent. The active ingredients found in champagne-themed products may include grape seed oil or grape seed extract. These ingredients combine well with rose essence or citrus (think of a Mimosa — the popular drink made with orange juice and champagne) to enhance the aromatherapy value of the product and service. So pop the cork and offer your guest a glass of bubbly for a unique service. You will fnd many variations, but most champagne pedicures begin with a soak in room temperature champagne accented with rose petals or rose minerals. Grape seed scrubs are often used for exfoliation and can be combined with a champagne oil massage. The scrub combined with champagne oil creates the perfect combination of exfoliation and hydration. Champagne oil is helpful in restoring moisture and improving the look of aging feet while fghting skin discoloration.

WANT TO ADD SOME SPIRITS TO YOUR MENU?

BOURBON — AS AMERICAN AS APPLE PIE Annual sales of bourbon and Tennessee whiskey surpassed the $1 billion mark in 2013. Craft distilleries are cropping up across the country. Bourbon tours, tastings, and parings are becoming as popular as wine events. Bourbon is a uniquely American beverage that is found at backyard barbeques and black tie affairs. Given our love of bourbon, it was only a matter of time before salons and spas teamed up with product manufacturers to turn that delightful combination of brown sugar, vanilla, and caramel scents and favors into a growing list of products and services. Spa Grand Traverse in the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Mich., has created an “On the Rocks” manicure and pedicure combination that features products infused with ginger, pecans, and real Kentucky bourbon. This service provides 100 minutes of “me time” and includes a complimentary cocktail. Spa director Dawn Olsen says her inspiration for the service came from guests’ positive response to having organic spa cocktails available in the spa. “Guests like the idea of relaxing with a delicious spa-inspired cocktail while enjoying our manicures and pedicures and at the same time catching up with the people in their lives,” says Olsen. An added plus is the fact that the Bourbon Bubbler products smell wonderful, which often leads to a retail sale.

Before launching into liquor-based services, some research is in order. 1. Research your state and county liquor laws. Alcohol may be allowed in a service but in some states serving alcohol is not permitted in a salon or requires a special license. (For more information and resources, read “License to Serve” at www.nailsmag.com/alcohol.) 2. Seek out local sources for inspiration and products such as wineries, craft brewers, or vineyards. These local businesses can help promote your spirited services and products. 3. Brush up on the health benefts. Spirited treatments have many health benefts that can be part of your marketing and promotion punch. Explaining the health benefts of your services is an important component of what makes them special. 4. Test your recipes and practice your protocols. Consistency is critical in a premium service. 5. Nightmare on Singapore Street

“My husband and I have always been obsessed with Halloween,” says Redlands, Calif.-based nail tech Sherri Traweek. “We’d always wanted to be a part of a haunted house (or “haunt” in industry lingo), and when the opportunity came up to help out with a friend’s haunt, we jumped at it.” Thanks to the twisted imagination of Traweek’s husband and their friend, Higgins Manor has become a decade-long Halloween-time tradition for hundreds of families in their friend’s sleepy Mission Viejo neighborhood. “We take guests into the middle of the horror,” she says. “With twists, turns, crawl spaces, hidden doors, and a cast of extremely talented ‘scareactors,’ Higgins Manor aims to scare the living daylights out of its guests.” Traweek’s role at the haunt is as a street performer. Along with her husband, she interacts with guests and keeps them entertained while they wait in line. “The wait can get as long as two hours on Halloween night,” she notes. “The street is very high-energy, with lots of parents and trick-or-treaters roaming around, ripe to be scared. My favorite thing is walking up to a really big, tough guy and making him scream like a little girl, then watching as his wife and kids laugh at him, knowing he will never be able to live that moment down. In some weird way, we actually help bring families together and make shared memories.” Admission to the haunt is free, but the volunteers encourage visitors to make a charitable donation. Last year, they teamed up with Greendog Foundation, an animal charity that rescues forgotten pets from kill shelters and gives them new homes. “Since I’m a huge animal lover, I’m really proud of this,” Traweek says. “So while we love to scare, we also care a whole lot for those animals who are scared, but can’t speak out or fnd help.” You can fnd out more about Higgins Manor at www.facebook.com/higginsmanor.
