Terms and Conditions The University Wireless Network should not be used inappropriately; in particular you should not use the network to: • • • • • • • • •
send, receive or make available any material that might be considered offensive, obscene or indecent send, receive or make available any material that might infringe copyright, e.g. MP3 or other audio and video formats run peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing software, e.g. Lime Wire intercept or attempt to intercept other wireless transmissions for the purposes of eavesdropping access or run utilities or services which might negatively impact on the overall performance of the network or deny access to the network, e.g. RF jamming, Denial of Service (DoS) harass, cause annoyance, nuisance or inconvenience to others access or attempt to access systems or resources to which you are not authorised provide services which may interfere with normal network operation provide access to others, e.g. allowing a third party to use your credentials to access the network
Misuse of the wireless network will be taken extremely seriously. Such misuse may lead to: • •
Immediate permanent disconnection of any unapproved wireless networking equipment For deliberate or repeated breach of the policy, disciplinary action under current University regulations
We need to ensure the wireless network is safe for everyone to use. As a result every single computer that connects to the network must have the following: • • •
A personal firewall Up-to-date antivirus software An operating system which is fully patched and running the latest service packs

WIRELESS CONFIGURATIONS The following are simplified instructions for configuration and apply to Windows XP machines
1. The following pages will show you how to setup access to UOBWLAN on your computer. Before you continue, check whether your wireless function needs to be switched on. This may be via a specific wireless switch or by pressing Fn and Fx (Fn is a key usually found on the bottom left of your keyboard and Fx means one of the function keys on the top row of your keyboard which will have a Wireless symbol on it). Follow the steps indicated by the numbers below to begin: 1.1 Right click the wireless network icon in the system tray (usually on the bottom right-hand side of your screen) and select View Available Wireless Networks:

1.2 Click the “Change advanced settings� option under related tasks on the left of the window: (Please note that you may see more than one wireless network at this stage. The one to choose is UOBWLAN)

1.3 Under the General Tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button:

1.4 Click the options to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically as shown above. Click OK to return to the general settings page.

1.5 Now select the Wireless Networks tab and then click Advanced

1.6 Uncheck Automatically connect to non-preferred networks (if selected) and select the Access point (infrastructure) networks only option, then click the Close button:

1.7 Click the Use Windows to configure my wireless settings box if it is unchecked and then click Add... under preferred network

1.8 Enter UOBWLAN for the Network name (SSID). Then select WPA2 for Network Authentication, select AES for Data encryption then click the Authentication tab:

1.9 Check Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network and uncheck Authenticate as a computer. Select Protected EAP (PEAP) as the EAP Type. Click Properties to view the EAP properties page:

1.10 Check the Validate server certificate box, scroll down the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities list and check GTE Cyber Trust Root CA. Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) as the authentication method. Click Configure:

1.11 Uncheck the box for Automatic Windows logon and Click OK

1.12 Click OK to close all the windows - you have now completed the basic setup and should be ready to connect to the UOBWLAN wireless network. 1.13 A bubble will appear in the System Tray (usually the bottom right-hand corner of your screen) asking you to enter your credentials. Click the bubble to open the enter credentials logon window:

1.14 Enter your username and password (the same login as your university email login). Enter ADF as the logon domain and click OK:

1.15 A message should now appear off the System Tray informing you that you are connected to UOBWLAN. You should now be able to access the network.
