Brief 1 : ebb & flow

THE EBB & FLOW A collection of Haikus

Concept: Ben had been writing haikus every day for 3 months, and I asked him if I could use his haikus as the content for a publication. With the international book fair approaching, this seemed like a great idea. I wanted to produce a range of products that visually represented the tone and mood of Ben’s haikus well.

Illustrations based on written, outsourced content were created and a series of bespoke prints to go alongside the book were produced for the international book fair.

Audience: Collectors of bespoke books & prints, book fair goers between he ages of roughly 20 to 40.

Left: Depicts a bonsai tree inspired by Japanese Hokusai art, the dark and light fragmented pixel background along with the tree illustration aim to visually represent Ben’s written content and the nature of the literature itself.

PRODUCT The illustrations produced for this brief had an emphasis on line form using software to achieve accurate lines and perfectly mathematic patterns.

The concept for the juxtaposition of automated patterns and hand drawn lines came from the title : The Ebb & Flow. The rationale behind the one colour emphasis throughout the illustrations for this brief was that they had to be suitable for exposure for silk screen printing.

APPLICATION Illustrations were applied to a simple, minimal layout to compliment the one colour line art, transitioning to heavily textured page backgrounds to reflect the title of the book, and give the book an ‘ebb and flow’ of colour.

The initial product was a hard back edition of the publication, but becuase of budget and reproduction issues, a paperback edition was developed, which is what you see here.

RANGE (01) The range of primary products translated well into ephemera, the format and layout did not need to change and echoed the publication in different formats well. A bespoke hardback special edition book (digitally printed cover & gold metallic hand printed title), set of 5 postcards and 3 badges were produced to go alongside the book. Slight colour differences are evident in the range, this is due to differing stock choices for each product based on its durability.

Postcards and badges are packaged in cellophane wrap, with a card top band attached by two staples. Badges add fresh colour to the otherwise dark appearance of the range.

The detail in the illustration was picked up well by the silkscreen process. The print (left) was produced using a blend of two gold metallic powders, and white print medium.

RANGE (02) A secondary range was produced because the illustrations translated well at a larger scale and were designed with the intention of overprinting. A series of five A2 posters were printed, two of these featuring a two colour overlay with an alternative colourway choice. Each had an edition of 15.

PACKAGING Packaging needed to different for each product in the set. This made each product easily distinguishable. With postcards and badges being of the same nature, they both received the same packaging treatment across 2 different formats. The special hardback edition of the publication was wrapped and held together with a sticker. Each have elements of the overall brand applied to them, in diferent manors to keep them uniform.

CONTEXT / DISTRIBUTION The day of the international book fair came, The prints were displayed at the front of the table in a pile, due to a lack of space. The books, badges and postcards were displayed behind.
