Showcasing notable picture books 2012-2013 from the Australian Children’s Book Illustration Exhibition

An Exhibition of Australian Children’s Book Illustration The Australian Publishers Association (APA) is the peak industry body for Australian book, journal and electronic publishers. Established in 1948, the Association is an advocate for all Australian publishers: large or small; commercial or non-profit; academic or popular; locally or overseas owned. The APA’s initiatives at Bologna Children’s Book Fair aim to support publishers in the promotion and sale of rights to Australian children’s books and to facilitate contact between Australian publishers and international agents and promoters. In broader terms, we aim to promote Australian culture and literary culture internationally, and draw attention to and showcase the diversity and depth of Australian children’s books. We are excited that the Australian Children’s Laureates (see page 10) will be present at the stand and taking part in special events at the fair. Each year this exhibition tours to other book festivals and fairs. In 2011 the exhibition toured to Paju Bookcity in South Korea. In 2012 the exhibition toured to the Booksori Festival in Paju Bookcity, and in Seoul to the National Youth and Children’s Library, and in 2013 to the Korea Foundation Cultural Gallery. In 2013 the exhibition will be exhibited at venues including the Capital Library Beijing, China, as part of the Beijing Writers Festival.

The Australian Children’s Laureates for 2012 and 2013 are Alison Lester and Boori Monty Pryor. This prestigious national honour is awarded by the Australian Children’s Literature Alliance (ACLA) to promote the transformational power of reading, creativity and story in the lives of young Australians. As Laureates Alison and Boori are national and international ambassadors for Australian children’s literature and visit all states and territories telling their stories and being part of an active literary culture. Each is engaged in their own Laureate Project and you can follow their progress on the Children’s Laureate website.

Alison Lester is one of Australia’s most popular authors. She has written and illustrated over 25 picture books including Clive Eats Alligators, Magic Beach, Noni the Pony and One Small Island (with Coral Tulloch). Boori Monty Pryor is an indigenous Australian born in Townsville, North Queensland in 1950. His father is from the Birri-gubba Nation of the Bowen region and his mother’s tribal group from Yarrabah, near Cairns, is the Kunggandji. Boori has worked in film, television, modelling, sport, music and theatre-in-education. He has written several award-winning books with Meme McDonald including Maybe Tomorrow, My Girragundji, The Binna Binna Man and Njunjul the Sun. Shake A Leg, his picture book with Jan Ormerod, won the Prime Minister’s Award in 2011. During 2012 filming has begun for Boori’s Laureate project Storykeepers, a documetary about his life and work.
