The Australian Children’s Laureate
Enriching the lives of young Australians through the power of story. “our literature… is deep, fresh and original, punching far above its weight in awards and world sales.” Jackie French Jackie French, Senior Australian of the Year 2015, and best-selling author of over 170 books, is the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2014 – 2015. This year, Jackie is a special guest of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and will be participating in a dynamic international Laureate program of events at the Second International Laureate Summit during the Fair: • Sunday afternoon – private Laureate function • Monday – Growing the Laureate movement – by invitation • Tuesday – Official Summit – for general admission • Wednesday - Australian Stand Party, talk by Jackie, by invitation Jackie is dyslexic and a strong advocate for the right of ALL children to be taught to read with the methods best suited to them. ‘Every child can learn to read. Every child must learn to read, or they are cut off from jobs, social life, social media, and the written heritage of humanity.’ – Jackie French Jackie French estimates that in 2014 she spoke to about 60,000 young people in person and by video link, School of the Air, internet chat rooms, speaker phone, email and letters. In January, the Australian Children’s Laureate team launched a ‘Reading Calendar’ for 2015, a joint work by Jackie French, Justine Alltimes, illustrator Ann James and designer Judy Watson, encouraging children to share, create and enjoy stories together. For March’s theme, Navigate a Story, we can follow Jackie’s trip to the 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, and her participation in the second International Children’s Laureate Summit, live through the Laureate blog and social media.

Reading Australia is a hub for resources, written by teachers for teachers, to bring Aussie stories to life in the classroom. Linked to the curriculum, the resources provide step-bystep activities and tasks, some with supporting multimedia materials. The not-for-profit Copyright Agency produced Reading Australia in partnership with the major Australian English educator associations, to create a resource for teachers of such high quality it makes a compelling case to choose Australian texts, to share our nation’s stories and to back our authors. What teachers say about Reading Australia: “Well written units of work and great choices of texts.” “I have taught a book I might not otherwise have picked up - great resource!”

Text Marks the Spot is a day for students and teachers to celebrate children’s and young adult writing, illustration, song-writing and more. Sponsored by La Trobe University, Text Marks the Spot kicks off the vibrant Bendigo Writers Festival and integrates children’s and young adult creators into the flavour and buzz of the weekend. Following in the footsteps of Shaun Tan, Craig Smith and Chris ‘Crikey’ Kennett, 2015 sees a new Bruce Whatley exhibition.
dr what? THE CREATIVE INTENTIONS AND PRACTISES OF BRUCE WHATLEY. Bruce Whatley is the much-admired illustrator and author-illustrator of picture books such as The Ugliest Dog in the World and the classic Diary of a Wombat. Curated by children’s literature experts Sarah Mayor Cox and Paul Morris, the exhibition provides a rare insight into the mind of this feted artist and showcases his brilliance.
