THE AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN’S LAUREATE Enriching the lives of young Australian through the power of story Artist and author Leigh Hobbs is the 2016-17 Australian Children’s Laureate Leigh’s characters Old Tom, Horrible Harriet and Mr Chicken have appeared in more than 20 books. His gallery of rascals, scallywags and misfits has endeared him to generations of readers. Old Tom was adapted for television, and this year Horrible Harriet and Mr Chicken will appear in a production at the Sydney Opera House. In 2016 Leigh travelled far and wide, from remote Indigenous community schools in Western Australia to major festivals in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne . He spoke at conferences in far north Darwin and in regional New South Wales, and at the IBBY Congress in Auckland, New Zealand. In this first year of his role as Laureate he has interacted with over 20,000 people. As well as promoting the importance of reading in the lives of children and teenagers, Leigh champions the creative role played by libraries, and supports the work of other writers and artists. At Bologna he will participate in the International Laureate Summit and advise emerging illustrators at the new Book Fair initiative, The Illustrators Survival Corner. ‘Libraries have played an enormous role in my life’, Hobbs says. ‘Reading and exploring history and art is something I have been able to do because of libraries. I’m passionately interested in histories and cultures and I hope that through my work I can encourage children to explore and experience these things too.’ The Australian Children’s Literature Alliance and Leigh Hobbs would like to thank the following organisations who support Leigh’s participation in the Bologna Children’s Book Fair: His publisher, Allen & Unwin, The Australia Council for the Arts, Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, Books Illustrated, APA Children’s Publishers Committee and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and organisers of the International Laureate Summit. www.childrenslaureate.org.au
