RE-INVENTING ALLERGY SEASON: Fighting Naturally

By Laura Yoo

It's been another very mild winter, here in Dallas, and that means another doozy of an allergy season. For some people, this means Over-The-Counter antihistamines until the next freeze. The less lucky find that even the non-drowsy ones make us feel a bit...off. Steroid nasal sprays can be helpful, unless you are prone to nosebleeds, dryness, or need your immune system at its peak. Is it time for antibiotics for your regular sinus infection? Don’t count on it; 90% of them are viral. (If you do have significant swelling and a high fever along with sinus symptoms, yours might be bacterial.) Here are some pharmaceutical-free tips for a happier nose this spring: DON'T SLEEP ON IT You spend a lot of time in bed; make sure you're not bringing your allergens in for the night. Start with clean bedding and wash it in hot water at least once every two weeks. Who goes to bed with you? Has your dog been outside? Give Rover a rinse. Shower, bathe, or at least rinse off before you go to bed. I know, not great for hairstyle maintenance. Re-doing your hair vs feeding the snot factory. You choose. Speaking of grooming, are your eyes stinging? It might actually be product rather than pollen.

Even the most hypoallergenic crème is not meant to contact your eyes themselves. Pat your moisturizer only up to the eye socket, and your body heat will help the product travel to the delicate skin around the eyes without getting it IN your eyes. KEEP IT CLEAN

If you’ve de-pollinated your bed and you still wake up feeling your worst, you may be allergic to dust mites. Zip your pillows into a miteproof casing. green, think about all the pollen that covers As much as I line-dried laundry. What you save in electricity, love the idea you’ll make up for in symptoms. of going

When’s the last time you changed your central air filter? Your vacuum bags and filters? When’s the last time your home was vacuumed? Even if your rugs and your filters don’t look dirty, consider that allergens trigger symptoms on a microscopic level. SINUS IRRIGATION So now that your home environment is as clean as can be, what’s inside your head? Pollen is sticky. It’s tenacious. Its job is to hitch a ride and cling until it gets where it’s going. I mean, look at your car. Some of that is stuck on the hairs inside your nose, making it itch and run. Don’t you want it out? Sometimes people mention saline spray when I bring up sinus rinsing. Now, a rinse bottle is a fine idea. These have a one-way valve to eliminate backwash, and the force of the squeeze combines with gravity to get the solution through any congestion. This is different from a spray. A mist is better than nothing, but again, look at your car. If you mist a spot, it’s not going to get as clean as with a stream of running water. If you use boiled or distilled water, at a comfortably warm temperature, with the right amount of salt, sinus rinsing can be very pleasant. Just remember to breathe through your mouth while you clean your nose. WHAT SHOULD I EAT? WHAT SHOULDN'T I EAT? For almost every condition, I would advise increasing the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Hay fever requires a caveat to this advice. With pollen allergies, you should be careful about eating related plants. Sometimes raw produce (or even cooked celery and nuts) can set off allergic reactions, in particular, berries, citrus, grapes, mango, figs, peanut, pineapple, pomegranates, and watermelon. If you are allergic to the pollen, it does not mean you are allergic to all the foods, but you may be more susceptible to reactions in that group. The trick to enjoying a pleasant day outdoors is not to treat your allergy symptoms, but to prevent them before they kick in! Laura Yoo is a licensed acupuncturist in the state of Texas. She practices at the Manning Wellness Clinic in Dallas, Texas

Protect Yourself From Dangers of the Sun!

Understanding M elanom a By Dee Dee Lowder

Yes, we are all guilty of getting too much sun; ladies desiring a perfect tan, golfers not covering heads and faces while on the course, or enjoying the wind in their hair with the convertible top down. Do we love the feel of the rays on our faces? Sure. Should we, definitely, but with protection! Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer; it starts in a mole and, if left untreated, gradually spreads throughout the body. While less common than other types of skin cancer, it is the most serious. Defined as a form of cancer beginning in melanocytes (cells making the pigment melanin). It may begin in a mole (skin melanoma), and can also begin in other pigmented tissues. Melanoma is able to affect your skin only, or may spread to your organs and bones. As with other cancers, treatment for melanoma works best when the cancer is found early.

Most people who spend a lot of time in the sun do not get melanoma; however, the primary cause of most melanoma cases is spending too much time in the sun. People who live in sunny, high-altitude climates, or who have had one or more sunburn blisters (second degree burns, by the way) as a child and those who use tanning beds (which contain harmful UVA rays) on a regular basis. Fair freckled skin individuals are also at increased risk for melanoma. The best way to learn if you have melanoma, is to get an annual skin exam by a dermatologist. A doctor will take a biopsy of any mole that looks to potentially be melanoma. What does melanoma look like? The best way for you to check for it is to use the ABCD (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter) system. • • • •

Asymmetry – Meaning half of the mole is different from the other half. Normal moles are symmetrical. Border – Healthy, normal moles are even and round. Color - Normal moles are usually one color; those that contain two or more colors or shades could be a symptom and cause for concern. Diameter – Size of the mole is also very important, if larger than the size of a pencil eraser (6mm) should be examined by a dermatologist. Watch for a moles growth. If your doctor suggests you do a regular skin self-exam, to check for the development of a new skin cancer, it is best to begin by learning where your birthmarks, moles, and other marks are and their usual look and feel. Check for anything new:

A new mole ( looks different from your other moles)

A new red or darker color flaky patch that may be a little raised

A new flesh-colored firm bump

A change in the size, shape, color, or feel of a mole

A sore that doesn't heal

Melanoma is generally treatable if caught during earlier stages and chances of survival are good. However, chances of survival are reduced if caught at later stages, because the cancer may already have spread throughout the body. The most common treatment is surgery to remove the melanoma. It is the only treatment you may need for early-stage melanomas that have not spread to other parts of your body. After surgery, your doctor will set up a schedule of frequent checkups and will discuss how you can lower your chances of having another melanoma. If your melanoma is very deep or has spread to your lymph nodes, your doctor may discuss with you about more aggressive treatment plans which can include surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation or a combination of these.

Should you be afraid of the sun, absolutely not! However, you must take precautions.

The best way to prevent all kinds of skin cancer, including melanoma, is to protect yourself whenever you are out in the sun. It's important to avoid exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. 

Try to stay out of the sun during the middle of the day (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Wear protective clothes when you are outside, such as a hat to shade your face, a long-sleeved shirt, and long pants.

Get in the habit of using sunscreen every day. Look for sunscreen of an SPF value of least 15. Sunscreen should protect against both types of UV radiation in the sun's rays—UVA and UVB.

Avoid sunbathing and tanning salons.

By checking your skin regularly, you'll learn what is normal for you. It may be helpful to record the dates of your skin exams and notes or pictures of the way your skin looks. Then, you can compare your skin to the photos to help check for changes. If you find anything unusual, see your doctor, ease your mind early and do not become a statistic. •

More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually; more than all other cancers combined.

There are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime; between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either skin cancer at least once.

Listen, It’s Good For You By Susan Hamilton

Grab a cup of coffee and sit down, my friend. Let’s chat about a routine day you might experience at work in your very own company. I see you constantly busy. As a matter of fact, several employees have been wanting to talk with you about some pretty important stuff, but they don’t want to interfere with your priorities. They’ve attempted these conversations with you several times, but get the ‘closed’ responses that let them know you’re just not interested in acting on a different point of view.

You’ve developed standard answers to deal with real problems that you just don’t want to address … I get it, you know. It’s not that you don’t WANT to address these problems, only that you don’t see how you can do anything about them YET. There’s going to be a time when that opportunity opens up – like when there’s more money available or when the timing in the economy is better or when there’s a more consistent cash flow you can count on – I get it. Can I just tell you there’s a few things I’ve learned over the years? There are two things that will never materialize on any

timeline. ‘Ready’ and ‘Done’. They don’t exist. The truth of the matter is, unless you make steps to consciously walk in the direction of the things you can’t see yet, you’ll never get there. New ideas represent the things you can’t see yet.

go around. That’s not the vision you had for your business, and I don’t think you have to get stuck there. There’s still time, you know. This ship can get turned around and pointed in a more lucrative direction. People need each other. You need to take some time to get out of your company and look at it from above it, like you’re playing with LEGOs™. What do you want it to look like? Get with a coaching group, get out and network, find people that will pour into you so you can have enough to pour back out into your business. We all need to be part of a community that forages ahead with solid leadership – or we won’t. We can’t give what we’re not getting ourselves. I see you nodding your head. C’mon, let’s design the company – and the life – you really want.

Friend, you have one responsibility in business. To be the best, offer the best, make enough money to be generous and have enough time to be generous with it. In a nutshell, to be successful. That’s not a critique, that’s a friendly reminder. What if that underling of yours has a great idea that would work, if you put some feet to it? Have you thought about mapping it out, and have you considered the possibility that maybe with your approval, endorsement and refinement – it could be the thing that generates the consistent cash flow you desire? I know it will take some work, but work in that direction is the only work that will change your squirrel cage approach to business. You have an excellent company, and have built this thing on a strong foundation, one brick at a time. But every plant that bears fruit needs water, sunlight and nutrients. It’s not enough to live off of one season of growth, there isn’t enough to

Tell me, if your company was right now the way you dream about it – what would it look like? Share your vision below. I live for this stuff. I want to see you succeed more than anything, because I know that when you have a successful company, so does every company that does business with you. That’s the activity that will put America back to work. If you think you’d like to talk to someone – no strings attached – to help you leap over some brick walls that may have built up over time, I offer business coaching on four different levels and consultation services you may want to look into. Fit and Fabulous at Fifty By Sonja Kabell

What do Christy Brinkley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Oprah Winfrey and Madonna all have in common? They are all over fifty and look fabulous! What is their secret? Granted, they do have the ability to hire scads of personal chefs, trainers, assistants and the best of the best. But we can all look and feel fabulous too without having to deal with all the paparazzi! So, what is the secret to lasting beauty, a youthful appearance, and a healthy glow? If you read any information on how the stars stay fit and fabulous, the common theme will be eating right and exercising. We know that what we nourish our bodies with is a huge factor in how we look and feel. Eating a well balanced diet, limiting high fat and processed foods are the key. Staying active also plays a role in keeping fit. Aerobic activity consistently will keep our bodies in shape. What are

the other big hitters? Restful sleep, having an active sex life and taking great supplements. What about your attitude? Does it make a difference? Absolutely!

Let's talk about attitude. Attitude is everything. To quote an article written by the Mayo Clinic, May 2011, "Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health."

Your outlook on life and events will negatively or positivity effect how you look and feel. If you deal with things in a stressful way or get "stressed out" your health will decline. Free radicals - stress can cause you to become unhealthy. Unhealthy people tend to be unhappy and look older. Have you ever known someone who seems to be perpetually in a good mood? They look healthier, more youthful, less "stressed." These happy people are like magnets. We migrate to them like they are a burst of sunshine. People who can see things in a positive manner verses negative can increase their life span, reduce the risk of heart disease, lower rates of depression, and achieve a higher resistance to the common cold!

Who knew that the glass half full verses half empty is so powerful. How do you start to work on your attitude which will in turn work on your outer beauty? Start being more positive and love on yourself with positive self talk. Research shows that happy people tend to: express gratitude on a regular basis; practice being optimistic; engage in frequent acts of kindness; savor joyful events, and practice forgiveness. Gratitude, optimism, kindness and forgiveness are such powerful words. Just saying "thank you" more often can give you a feeling of gratitude and what a difference it will make to the other person!

Negative Nelly in your head, think more encouraging thoughts. There are books written on the power of positive thinking by Norman Vincent Peale that might be of interest. Read inspirational quotes each morning to start your day off on an upbeat note. One of my personal favorites is "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined," by Henry David Thoreau. I always feel uplifted and motivated every time I read that quote.

Positive self talk in important as well. Self talk is the internal voice in our head that speaks loud and clear. Love on yourself by telling you just how great you are.

I challenge you to start the day by telling yourself something positive. It is not always easy so when you start to hear

Surrounding yourself with loving, uplifting and encouraging people will help too. You know the old saying, "birds of a feather, flock together." Don't hang out with turkeys! I hope you are inspired! We all can use some inspiration in our lives! Look great, feel great and be great! Fit and fabulous at fifty! In the world today, how important is healthy living? Unfortunately, we do not see evidence that people are taking it seriously. Healthy living is probably the most important factor to be emphasized, yet unhealthy food, proportions and routines are more predominately seen. What can one do in this fast paced life to still be healthy? The following tips are most important if you wish to achieve the best results for better health. 1. HYDRATE - The first rule is as simple as breathing but still people don't follow it regularly. It is recommended that one drink 8 glasses or roughly 2 liters daily. Even if you can’t manage that much, the water you do consume will show very good effects on your body. 2. EAT HEALTHY - This is a simple key. Cook light, avoiding fat whenever you can and try boiling and broiling instead of frying. Researchers recommend including more fruits into your diet and the best time to eat them is between meals 3. PROTEINS - Your body needs enough proteins which are very vital for correct functioning and eating foods rich in them helps it get what it needs. An adult body requires about 50 – 60 grams of protein per day depending on the body weight. It is important that you do not consider meat as the only source of protein, as many other food sources offer excellent protein options: Eggs, Milk, Soy Milk, Cheese, Yogurt, Peanut Butter, Fish, Poultry, Beans, Lentils, Grains and Nuts. And adding protein to milkshakes helps you provide the required daily amount your body needs.

1. WEIGHT - Losing weight will really lead to healthy living! This does not mean you have to go wild, quit eating or implement a strenuous regimen. It can be attained by including a regular exercise regime in your daily routine. Try anything that catches your fancy like dancing, cardio or Yoga. They are all great ways to ensure both a healthy body and mind. 2. OVERSTUFFING – Eat meals that are smaller in portion and do not stuff yourself. Eating smaller portions six times per day will keep you better satisfied and raises the metabolism of the body, helping you burn fat quickly. 3. FIBER - “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This old saying could hardly ring more true today, as Americans are finally beginning to realize the critical health benefits of a diet rich in fiber. Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts are great sources of this essential nutrient and easy to include in your daily food plan. 4. DRIED FRUITS & NUTS - Dried fruits and nuts have an exceptionally high nutritional value which promotes health and fitness. They are those fruits which are devoid of the water and include: apricots, raisins, plums, dates, prunes, cranberries, blueberries, figs and many more. Various kinds of dry fruits and even seeds are known to be very good for health however these are also high in cholesterol and hence should be taken in limited amounts. A handful is said to be more than enough to ensure healthy living. 5. HIGH CALORIES - Avoid foods that you know have a lot of calorific value. High-calorie foods contain much energy (more than 3 calories per gram) but weigh relatively little. These foods often are high in fat or concentrated with sugar, which contributes to the high energy content. Therefore, it is quite easy to eat a lot of such foods without realizing how many calories are consumed because high-calorie foods tend to provide little satiety. Fried foods, processed and packaged items and alcohol are all high in calories and should be moderately included in your diet. 6. WHITE FOODS – Eliminate “white” foods from your meals. These, whether boxed, packaged, canned, refined, baked or processed, are highly calorific and almost useless when compared to food that is healthy. 7. GOOD/BAD – Remember, foods are not good or bad. Select foods based on your total eating patterns, not whether any individual food is "good" or "bad." Don't feel guilty if you love foods such as apple pie, potato chips, candy bars or ice cream. Eat them in moderation, and choose other foods to provide the balance and variety that are vital to good health.

Experts agree the key to healthy eating is the time-tested advice of balance, variety and moderation. In short, that means eating a wide variety of foods without getting too many calories or too much of any one nutrient. These 10 tips can help you follow that advice while still enjoying the foods you eat. In conclusion a healthy living can only be attained when there is a change in lifestyle. Healthy eating leafs to a healthier life!

I Have a Headache; Not Tonight Honey - 4 Tips to Help You Get It Going Again By Don Purdum

I was recently talking to a business owner who spends twelve or fifteen hours a day resolving issues, helping customers, working with employees, and building marketing and sales plans. It is just a normal day in the life of a business owner, right? However, we all know that the day doesn’t end when you lock up shop for the evening. There are reports still to review and planning for tomorrow that has to get done between dinner, putting kids to bed, and reading or researching to keep up with

4. Learn how to compromise. So are husbands and wives doomed to frustration if one spouse wants to make love more frequently than the other? With love all things are possible and this is where the desire for your spouse’s happiness can make both of you happier. As with most things in marriage, it’s a matter of loving Here are four tips to help you:

effort and compromise.

How are you using the business to help further your personal dreams, goals, and desired lifestyle? If it’s not, I recommend the two of you sit at the table and figure it out, adjust, revamp if necessary, and move towards fulfilling your purpose and mission in life.

Letting other things get in the way of your marriage can happen at any time in one’s life. In fact, the older we get, the more we have to consciously choose to think about our spouses and not take them for granted. If you want to deepen your relationship, have more sex! There I said it. It’s All About You! By David Call

Whatever is out there in the 2014 brave new world of interiors has to dovetail with your personal style. My hope is to show you some home decor trends that showcase sophistication and style of the very expensive designer collections, but which do not break your bank to enjoy their simplicity and multifunctionality. Well-made furniture and home accessories and art should reflect how you live and what you love. It must matter in your room designs and be lovingly collected to showcase the lifestyle that is “you”. Embrace what you are drawn to, what makes you “have to have” that piece, look or color, what fits with the way you live and make it your exciting new trend. If you love color peruse the palette and select the tones that appeal to you and go for it!

Do you watch TV a lot? Then put it in the room where you want to watch it and not in the room it is “supposed” to go in. Live your life comfortably and in the style that makes you most happy. Don’t cook or entertain? Turn the eat-in kitchen area into a sunroom with minimal cooking options and make the dining room a reading or music room near the living room. Or turn it into a game room off the kitchen. Use your space in a manner that lets you truly enjoy life most effectively and in the manner that reflects who you are. Use your personality as your guide. For most of us, however, switching into Radiant Orchid, the color of the year, the Freesia (Golden Yellow), say, or the Cayenne and ever-popular Paloma Grey touted as this year's hot flavors is still better utilized as accents throughout the home.

Even if it's all the rage, a purple suit with orange polka dots is not always the way to go! Consider design, quality and craftsmanship, as you do not want the furniture to go out of style too soon. You want it to be trendy but classic like a fine wine or piece of fabulous art. One outstanding piece of furniture can stand alone or build the room around it. This season is all about flower power. Think bold, loud and proud. And it tis the season to showcase your favorite curiosities! What are curiosities? They are exotic and delightful items that grace a coffee table, book shelf, dresser or cabinet and stand as conversation pieces. This year, it is all about shells and coral, animal figurines, rocks, insects, butterflies and more. Which is your favorite?

There is more and more gravitation to having your living space as the place where you can breathe deeply and be calmer away from the hustle and bustle of our high-tech world. Approach design with a real freshness, make it all yours and just get on with doing it. That's a trend!

Sizzlin Salads Okay, you might not be able to snorkel in aquamarine waters of a tropical island or be nose to nose with a gentle dolphin... but you can eat and drink like you are an idyllic island native. Grab a bottle or two of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, blast some Jimmy Buffett from your iwhatever and chow-down on a delicious, refreshing salad! Your taste buds will dance a Calypso number the whole meal! Simple to make, but simply elegant. St. Croix Spiced Rum Summer Salad (serves 2): Ingredients 2 cups Rainer cherries, pitted and halved 2 bananas, peeled (duh!) and sliced diagonally Pineapple, fresh and cubed Strawberries, hulled and quartered Kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced Mango, pitted, peeled and cubed 1/2 cup Captain Morgan Spiced Rum 1/2 lemon, juice only (remove the seeds unless you hate your friends) 1 tsp. raw honey 1 tsp. minced spearmint Steps Place all the fruit in a large non-aluminum bowl. In a small bowl whisk together the lime juice, rum and honey. Pour the dressing over the fruit and toss to coat. Let the fruit sit at room temperature at least 15 minutes before serving.

As Dorothy chanted on the yellow brick road, or as in the case of this sweet favorite from Chili you can shout with glee: "Mango and papaya and kiwi, oh my!" While this is a salad in culinary terms, it is also a wonderful light dessert!

Chilean Sweet Fruit Salad (serves 4): Ingredients 4 mangoes, peeled, pitted and cubed 1 papaya, skinned, seeded and cubed 3 kiwi fruits, peeled and sliced 1 lime, 1 Tbs. honey

Steps: In a medium bowl combine and toss the mangoes, papaya and kiwis. Grate the zest from the lime and place in a small bowl. Cut the lime in half and squeeze the juice into the bowl with the zest. Stir the honey into the lime juice and zest. Pour the dressing over the fruit, toss to coat and serve. Recipes from Chef Larry Edwards

Just like everything else, it’s all about style. I was never a hat person. I just didn’t feel comfortable drawing attention to my cranium. Yes, I wear the obligatory baseball cap while working out, or walking my dog, but that is the extent of it. Then a few years ago on a shopping jaunt, while perusing the sale bin, I found a hat I wanted to put atop my head. There it was in all its’ glory, summoning me to try it on. At first I hesitated. My mind filled with, ”what ifs”. What if it doesn’t fit my head? What if someone starts to chuckle while I’m wearing it? What if it makes my forehead look huge? What if my hair won’t fall back into place after I take it off? What if I look like a dork? It was now or never. I took a breath, tried it on and loved it! The sunny straw color and bunch of fruit on the back brim adornment made me smile. Why had I been so afraid of wearing a

While women have long worn hats, men wearing hats is a tradition that goes back decades. There’s just something classy about a man in a hat. They say confidence like no other accessory. You can’t, for example, put on a fedora without feeling dapper – they just make you feel good – a little jaunty and interestingly enough; contemporary. That’s the history of and truth about fashion though - the great styles never die, they always come back and often better!
