IN MEMORIAM Albert “Beto” Garcia

Pegasus Net Waves noteWORTHY Magazine Proudly Dedicates the First Issue to Albert “Beto” Garcia By Robin Roberson & Raul Enriquez “Beto”, as he will always be fondly remembered as to us, Albert Garcia, co-founder of the Texas Jazz Festival, made our first attendance at the 53rd Texas Jazz Festival in Corpus Christi last fall most memorable. He, the whole staff at the event, the musicians and even the mayor rolled out the red carpet and made us feel most welcomed. We definitely look forward to returning this October. However, this bastion of this beautiful music, will not be there. An accomplished musician, Albert Garcia passed away at home with his family in early March at the age of 86. For the four short days we knew him, he had a profound impact. Albert followed in the footsteps of family members (his mother was a vocalist, and his oldest brother Manuel, a piano player, composer and arranger who wrote music for the famed Galvan Family Orchestra) and music came naturally for him. As we interviewed him he described the first gathering fifty plus years ago and how many more people than they ever expected to show up, did. And they have ever since! The Texas Jazz Festival had a humble beginning, rather quietly in a jam session held in the Harvin Student Center at Del Mar College in 1959. The following year, jazz musicians gathered for the first Jazz Festival in the college’s auditorium, now the Richardson Performance Hall. From there the event grew into what is now the official jazz festival of the state of Texas, a free annual event in October that draws tens of thousands of attendees during three days. Musicians from all over Texas and around the globe have graced the stages of the festival over the years 7

and Garcia told us in all that time only one group did not show up. He also told us how important sharing the music was for families and generations. He in turn passed on his talents to others, leaving a lasting jazz legacy across South Texas. According to Beto himself, he was very proud to be one of the original Hispanic founders and worked hard to educate people of the impact that Latinos have had on jazz.

Jazz is something familiar that keeps me balanced and calm in a world that is changing so fast, Garcia told us. It keeps you young. And we witnessed that at the Texas Jazz Festival, where on one side of you might be a 15 year old playing imaginary drums, and on your other side, a sixty year old toe tapping like a pro. Music is ageless and beautiful; we must keep passing it down from generation to generation. Garcia worked at a refinery for 29 years, which provided for his wife and three daughters, as he maintained a band and played jazz any chance he had, he said. Michael Perez, Beto’s grandson,, said that even though Garcia taught he and his brother Jon about the business side of music over the years, he took great pride in keeping the Jazz Festival free of admission charges. “When the festival was in the red, he wanted to keep it free,” Michael said. “He wanted to honor the music and expose the younger generation to it.”

We proudly dedicate the first issue of Pegasus Net Waves noteworthy Magazine to Albert “Beto” Garcia.

A Versatile Young Musician…Meet Spenser Liszt By Mara Penatzer

Saxophonist and composer Spenser Liszt is an active force in the DFW music scene and has the rare ability to work within any style with ease, while maintaining a strong personal voice. His debut album “Until Further Notice” shows him in his element as a leader, exploring original compositions with his modern jazz quartet and creating a sound that is both accessible and spontaneous, with a depth of emotion and energy. He also recently released another album entitled “Experitric Electriment,” a fast-paced and purely improvisatory foray into electronic soundscapes. Both of these albums were recorded with musicians Liszt met during his time at the University of North Texas, where he was a member of the prestigious One O’clock Lab Band and a graduate teaching fellow. Following his graduation last spring with a Master’s degree in jazz saxophone performance, Liszt relocated to the Dallas area where he works as a freelance musician, performing with musically diverse acts such as vocalist Hunter Sullivan, smart-pop singersongwriter J.R. Byrd, jazz trumpeter Jordan Gheen's Energy Collective big band, and Denton-based avant-rock group Fundamental.

music scene, and has done a great deal of work toward creating an artist-friendly environment within the Denton community. His interest in encouraging musicians not to allow their work to be undervalued led him to begin booking a well-received music series at Rasoi Indian Kitchen, allowing Denton musicians to play in a venue that is supportive of the artists within their own

His albums are available on CDBaby, iTunes, and Google Music. Upcoming performances and recordings can be found on spenserliszt.com, which will also soon be featuring The Aquarium, a new interview and concert series directed by Liszt.

Over the past year, Liszt has participated in several recording projects, and can be heard playing tenor saxophone on Korn’s “NeverNever: The Remixes-2013,” and doubling on saxophones, bass clarinet, and bassoon for Fundamental’s “f.”, Denton guitarist Robert Hokamp’s “Jungle Team,” and the Austin-based band Berkshire Hounds’ “…Are Not Amused.” Upcoming recording projects include a new collaboration with hip hop producer K. Flow and follow-up recordings with Fundamental and Robert Hokamp. Liszt has also begun writing for a new record of his own, expanding on the ideas of melodic clarity and creative use of voice heard on “Until Further Notice” and “Experitric Electriment,” and when asked to describe the upcoming project said "The new album is a direct reflection of my personal growth as a human in the last year."

Alaska Jazz Cruise 2014 Dave Koz & Friends at Sea

The good folks at Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines were kind enough to offer my team and I an incredible opportunity to experience a cruise to Alaska in advance of the sailing we are set to do next year in August, 2011. It was the exact same itinerary with the same ports of call, the same ship…the beautiful Rhapsody Of The Seas, (and hopefully), the same wonderful staff.

We were overjoyed to have the ability this much time ahead to experience this cruise as a vacation in much the same way as our guests will be enjoying it next year. So, we jumped Dave Koz and Friends at Sea

at the chance and without a doubt—it was

Finally, She Expresses Her Passion! Jennifer Martin is a late comer to the jazz scene here in Dallas. In fact she spent many years in corporate America before deciding to pursue a career as a singer.

We caught up with her at Stoney’s Wine Lounge, a cozy little spot in the Skillman-Live Oak area. There, she told us about herself. She started sing in Dallas jazz in 2007. But back in college she lived in New York and started singing in The Village. Her repertoire at the time ranged from folk to country rock. And traveling the U.S. and Canada as a singer took its toll on the young Jennifer. The 80’s saw a drop in income for most musicians and singers. So she felt she needed a REAL job. So a career with Neiman-Marcus as a manager for the computer systems for all the stores. Jennifer was with them for 20 years. After that time with Neiman-Marcus and 6 years with another company, she had saved enough money to quit, and re-pursue a career in singing. This time she followed her passion into jazz. Jennifer confessed that being in the corporate world was draining, working nearly 24 hours a day. “ I didn’t do much music or singing.” she said of her time working. “And the job was all encompassing. But it all paid off because now I can do what I really want to do.”

While at the Pegasus Net Waves studio, Pellizzi explained that she grew up in the coastal city of Recife, located on the far western edge of the continent. It is approximately 800 miles 20

northwest of Rio de Janiero or, 1287 Kilometers according to Simone. It was there she grew to love music because...”well, it was all around here.” When she was with family and friends she was encouraged to sing for them. Each gathering became a festivity. Later she joined choirs and jazz ensembles. It wasn’t until after school (a degree in Tourism Management) that her surroundings influenced her further. Being with people from other cultures drove her passion even more. After years of working in the tourist industry, friends encourage her to pursue that passion for singing. And she did.

She packed up and moved to Dallas to work and to get proper training. It has paid off. Being a quick learner, she was able to book gigs in the area and has become a favorite with many local and regional musicians. They include Brad Williams, Ross Schodek, Bregette Rideau, David Morganroth and Jorge Giorgio. And to top her talents she also designs and sews her own outfits.

Defying Easy Classification By Jet Parker

Emotional and soul-stirring, with classical and jazz influences, William Foley’s compositions lead you on a reflective personal journey much like a roller coaster ride. He and his band, which can vary in size from a quintet to a duo with guest violinist and/or cellist and every now and then a talented singer, does not play the same old songs in the same way that most groups do. Foley is not only an arranger that can bring new energy to a standard, pop or classical tune, but also a composer with many beautiful songs to his credit; music filled with twists and turns like that thrilling roller coaster, but interspersed with softer modulations and unexpected paths. William Foley, a thirty year veteran pianist/composer, has performed nationally and locally with musicians as varied and talented as Bill Tillman, Marshall Ivory, Shelly Carol, Drew Phelps and John Adams. iam@foleymusic.com 214.728.1239 William Foley

Carolyn Lee Jones: A Leap of Faith in Herself By Dee Dee Lowder

The result: In 2008 Carolyn Lee Jones made the leap to music and singing as a fulltime career.

Vocalist and Bandleader Carolyn Lee Jones made her way to the Dallas music scene from Omaha, Nebraska. Both her parents were musicians, which gave her an inspiring view of that world. So after school she decided to see that world!

A leap many are reluctant to take. But the confidence Carolyn was able to develop, along with her natural talents allowed her to build successfully. She is able to bring the listeners a wide range from standards to jazz-pop works. And a few modern music works to shake things up. The Great American Songbook sounds warm and lively with her approach.

Carolyn has worked with the likes of Graham Nash. Miles Tate, William Foley, Jeffrey Eckels, Lori Evans, Lincoln Apeland, and too many more to mention. A few of her musician friends collaborated to form “The New Collection”, a 26 voice a cappella ensemble that just released ”My Romance”. If you have not heard Carolyn Lee Jones, you are missing out!

Traveling the globe with a career in luxury retail, Carolyn was able to develop skills to seek and obtain music opportunities. She produced and performed while on the road; giving her valuable experience that benefited her and those around her.

After teetering on the brink many a time, The Balcony Club in Lakewood reopened this past year with new owners. Off-and-on staffer Michael David Pyeatt confirmed July 17 that the club had changed hands and longtime owner Tommy Stanco was out. New owner, Teddy Davey and regular, Bruce Richardson, who is working with Davey, intervened with a note counseling patience. "Take heart, there is still hope," Richardson said. As the anchor for the developed by investors Phil Romano, Stuart Fitts and Butch McGregor. Babb Brothers is fast becoming known for their good food and Saturday night cool blues.

The red checkered tablecloths and long tables give you the feeling of a barbecue joint that's been around for years‌one you expect to see Willie Nelson or Lucky Peterson in. The restaurant is brightly decorated, with guitars, corona buckets and flat-screen TVs providing some splash. And there is a large patio that has at least 20 wooden picnic tables and a corner stage. About a year into things, Babb's seems to be humming along well. The vibe is easygoing, definitely family-friendly and potentially a good spot to hang with friends.

Mike Babb feels he was in the right place at the right time to meet and interview with the team of investors and to get pulled right out of the catering business for a shot at running his own place. Truth be told‌ Babb likes to croon on occasion.

Music for the Soul. Can You Volunteer? By Christina Castle Imagine having no music in your life. No radio, no iPod, no concerts, no music to brighten your day or night. That is what is like for the homeless. Imagine how stressful it is to have no home, adequate food, medical care, etc. Imagine how stressful it is to be homeless, worrying constantly about where to take a shower, use the bathroom, about how to stay safe on the street. They never have the opportunity to socialize, visit in a safe environment, have a cup of coffee and just listen to some good music. The Day Resource Center opened in 1999 as a day shelter that serves as many as 600 homeless people daily offering showers, storage, laundry, mail service and help with jobs and housing. Bruce Frankel, Director, created an innovative program…Cypress Street Café where once a month the doors are open in the evening and the Day Resource Center transforms into a coffee house/night club. For a little bit of time, the homeless can meet their friends and enjoy great music provided by some of North Texas’ top musicians. Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Country, Folk – something different each month. Drawing 30 to 40 people when it first opened but now it regularly draws more than 100. “Good coffee, good cake and good entertainment. “What more could you ask for?” said one guest. “We love it.” The shelter relies on volunteers and appreciates each entertainer very much. Several churches provide refreshments, coffee, soft drinks, cakes and cookies. And the staff volunteers extra hours to assist.
