They actually make people be quiet so you can hear the performers. It's very exciting, "she said with another chuckle. "I play some at a little Italian restaurant in Coppell, Siena, on the first Saturday of every month. It's a fun and friendly family place and a location I really enjoy."

"You have to be domestic every once in a while, she laughingly told me. I asked if she was making any push to perform outside of Dallas. "No. Just focusing on the DFW 7

You could go to Chicago, New York, L A or any of the bigger places and find comparable musicians, but you can't find many good places or places that pay well there. This is a really nice little community where you can get established. It has worked out well for me. I am really enjoying myself."

When asked if any contemporary singers have caught her attention, she mentioned the late Amy Winehouse. "I did listen to some of her standards performances. And I thought she was amazing. I thought she had a lot of potential to create something amazing."

Who is Johnny Pate? By Jennifer Martin Song writer, bass player, arranger, producer, conductor, educator – Jazz Man Extraordinaire! I had the privilege of meeting Johnny Pate in the Spring of 2009. I was on a quest for the chart of the song “An Older Man Is Like an Elegant Wine” which I had heard on a Nancy Wilson CD. Johnny’s name appeared in the liner notes. I rushed to the internet and discovered an article written by Devra Hall about Johnny Pate. I contacted her and within two days, Mr. Pate sent me an email. Technology is really wonderful! Born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, December 5, 1923, Mr. Pate served in 218th AGF Army Band during World War II and from there he went on to play with such greats as Coleridge Davis’ big band, Joe Williams, Ella, Sarah, and Duke Ellington. He produced albums for B.B. King, Shirley Horne and Curtis Mayfield and many more. His numerous accomplishments are detailed in the bio appearing at the end of this article. I explained to Johnny that I was preparing to record a CD and wanted to sing that song but could not locate the chart. He said he could have it ready for me in a couple of days. Then he invited me to his home to pick up the chart and meet. When I arrived at Johnny’s home I was surprised to see that he had been working on a list of songs he thought might be good for me to record. Johnny sat on the floor and played song after song while telling me wonderful stories of his life. His lovely wife, Carolyn, served tea and cookies and added a few stories of her own. Johnny also provided suggestions for singers to whom I should listen. He did all that for someone he had never even met! Asked how he knew what would be best for me, he said he had listened to the sample songs on my website. All the material he selected was perfect. I came away with 5 songs for my CD to be recorded in October. Two of the songs were written by Johnny Pate, “Someone You’ve Loved” and “Yes, I Know When I’ve Had It.” To say that Johnny Pate is inspirational is an understatement. Sitting with the legendary Mr. Pate widened my musical horizons. Johnny is passionate about jazz and that passion is contagious. Although Johnny has “retired” rumor has it, somewhere in North Texas, it is my hope that he will never really retire as he has so much to give to the musical community. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to meet the marvelous Johnny Pate. Please check out Johnny’s website http://patesplace.net where he showcases jazz legends, provides his expert commentary, and introduces new artists. 9

Motoring and Music: The Playlist by Nino Henry

There are times that come up where we get a free weekend. No chores. No events. No pressing engagements. What to do? Why not a day drive. Yes. The road trip. a day drive to nowhere in particular. Just where a tank of gas will take us. It could be to the next city. It could be just a cruise out on country roads. Or to a scenic locale. A picturesque spot. But what is on the car stereo? My kids gave me an MP3 player a few years back. They showed me how it operates. And they showed me how to download music. It was glorious. Because I could create a playlist of what I like. And by that I mean not your ordinary/usual songs that most will consider road music. No. I wanted to have my own inspired list. You can have the Steppenwolf “Born to be Wild”. The Eagles “Take It Easy”. Sheryl Crow’s “Winding Road”. Or the obligatory Willie Nelson “On The Road Again”. Those pieces are fine. But over played. To the point they create eye rolling. Several hours of music can be stored on these devices. So I stored. But not your ordinary pieces. I prefer old school blues like John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillin’ “. Mavis Staples “Down In Mississippi”. The blues funk of Sly & The Family Stone, “If You Want Me to Stay”. Or from the contemporary Bettye Lavette “I Can’t Stop”.

11

Those are just part of what is stored.

FEATURE Then we switch to my jazz list. Old school jazz. Donald Byrd’s “Elijah”. Miles Davis “Kinda Blue”. Sarah Vaughan “Have You Met Miss Jones”. “Freedom Rider” From Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Or back to back of Nelson Riddle’s ”Route 66” the TV show theme, followed by Nat King Cole’s rendition of “Route 66”. And, there is the return home after the drive. Seeing the familiar Dallas skyline at night, the track at that moment is Eddie Harris “Sharky’s Theme” from the movie “Sharky’s Machine”. An apt description of jazz and motoring. A very nice transition to the end. These works of music give my road trips some flavor. As road side fruit and vegetable stands whiz by, the music adds more color. As you approach an old style diner, the tunes make the meal that more tasty. Or if it is raining, some songs make it more tolerable. And at night, some of what I hear make the stars sparkle a little brighter. So when the chance for a short road trip becomes available, be bold with that playlist. Instead of the Top 40 from years back, try something a little different. Old school blues and jazz. The discoveries on that drive will satisfy both ears and eyes.
