A successful account executive for a Brazilian Airline, Simone always loved music. When the opportunity arose, she began her career as a singer. As the most authentic Brazilian jazz singer in North Texas, her singing flows with the softly shifting rhythms of Bossa Nova, Samba, and other Latin music. Pursuing her career with a deep respect for music and the musicianship of DFW jazz performers, she has studied with top vocal jazz pedagogues, like UNT's Rosana Eckert. Recently, Simone headlined Addison's July Jazz Festival in the Park. At the end of her performance, people were standing and cheering for so long that the festival management eventually approved an encore. Simone is from Recife, a tropical city on the Atlantic coast in Northeast Brazil. The laid-back, funloving attitude of its beach culture pervades much of Brazil, but is especially strong in the Northeast. Simone carries that sensibility with her, always laughing and joking with her friends. What is it like to be around Brazilians? A short riddle clarifies - "How many Brazilians does it take to have a party?" Answer: One! (Credit to Classical Music Critic Gregory Sullivan Isaacs.) A little help with pronunciation: Simone is pronounced "See-mĹ?n-ee." With a voice to match her beauty, Simone sings Brazilian songs in the original Portuguese lyrics. A generous member of the DFW jazz community, she has helped translate lyrics into English for other singers and assisted in their pronunciation of Portuguese. Born and raised in the beautiful seaside city of Recife, Brazil, Simone could not help but be moved by the influence of her surroundings.
Music was everywhere! Her mother, who loved to sing and play the piano, filled her childhood with the lush sounds of the music of her homeland. From Antonio Carlos Jobim to Vinicius de Moraes – from Ivan Lins to Joao Bosco, this music was a vital part of her formative years and deeply touched her soul. From an early age she was passionate about Bossa Nova – and she was always singing -performing with choirs, jazz ensembles and in numerous other venues. This experience allowed her to fully develop her gift of song, which she now shares in her own warm and unique way. Her style is seductive and expressive!

Anyone who grew up in the Carolinas knows what the Shag is… that slow, lazy hip swaying, foot moving dance where couples slide gracefully across the dance floor as their loafers hiss on the hardwood. The Shag is a popular “partner” dance, a form of swing dancing, done primarily to Beach Music (100-130+ beats per minute). The term "Carolina Shag" is thought to have originated along the strands between Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and North

According to Bo Bryan, a Carolina Shag historian and resident of Beaufort County, S.C., the term was coined at Carolina Beach, North Carolina. The Carolina Shag is a descendant of Carolina Jitterbug, and its predecessor, Little Apple (whose origins can supposedly be traced to Columbia, South Carolina in 1937). Today, the Shag is a recognized dance in national and international dance competitions held across the United States. Master this dance and you and your partner will look impressive as you mirror each other with the quick footwork involved in dancing the Shag.
FEATURE | 10 The Shag is the official state dance of South Carolina, using moves similar to the jitterbug or swing dancing but features less bouncing and more graceful moves. The Shag is often danced in conjunction with oldies beach music, Motown music or blues music. Although it is a partner dance, the man and woman have different parts but remain in sync. The basic step in the shag dance can be done to a six count step, with a rhythm that is similar to a triple step, triple step, rock step. Learn to count “one-and-two, three-and-four, five-six.” Repeat until you know the eight beat rhythm well. There are eight shag dance steps, each of which corresponds to a beat. • •
The "one-and-two" and "three-and-four" steps should take about as much time to complete as the "five-six." Get some good shag dance music going, while you're at it. Here are some favorites: • • • • •

Learn to step in time to the eight-beat rhythm. Know that the idea of counting is to give your feet a beat to move to. Your feet will move every count, which includes any number you say as well as the word “and.” Instructions Stand face to face with your partner. If you're the male, you should hold your left hand out, palm facing up, about waist high. The female should put her hand, palm facing down, on top of the male's hand. The partners' hands should curl and lock at the fingers. Step forward with one foot and then step forward with the other. The male should lead with the right foot and the female with her left foot so that the toes come together. Then the male should step forward with his right foot and the woman with her left foot. Move your feet back on the next two beats. Step back with your left foot and then your right foot if you are the male. If you are the female, step back with your right foot first, followed by your left foot. Take another step back with your lead foot, which is your left foot if you are the male and your right foot if you are the female. Then follow by stepping back with your right foot if you are the male and your left foot if you are the female. Rock back with your lead foot on the next step. You should step back and do a rocking motion with your heel, using your left foot if you are the male and your right foot if you are the female. Then, move your other foot back so the back of it is even with the back of your other foot. Repeat the moves to over and over to upbeat music . Do the steps on eight quick beats to master this dance.

A Love Affair with Music Jennifer Martin is a late comer to the jazz scene here in Dallas. In fact she spent many years in corporate America before deciding to pursue a career as a singer and hit the Dallas jazz scene in 2007.
Jennifer Martin’s new CD, Someone You’ve Loved, is the type of music you’d hear at a classy restaurant where there are drinks before dinner, waiters with white jackets, and a little patch of light at each table from the single candle. It’s a little oldfashioned without being dated: a nice mix of ballads and jazzy uptempo tunes describing love lost and found, abandoned and remembered.

Texas Blues PROUD By Christina Castle
Like the Yellow Rose of Texas, the Alamo and the State Fair, the Lone Star State has produced some of the greatest blues legends to ever pick up a guitar or stand behind a microphone. There are greats who all found the blues in Texas like Grammy winner Marcia Ball, an Austin blues artist described in USA Today as "a sensation, saucy singer and superb pianist... where Texas stomp-rock and Louisiana bluesswamp meet", Robert Johnson, the Godfather of Blues, whose landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937 display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that influenced many generations of musicians, as well as Sam “Lightnin’” Hopkins from Centerville honored by Rolling Stone magazine as number 71 on their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Texas Blues differs from other styles in use of sounds and instruments, especially the heavy use of the guitar. While not limited to Texas, this subgenre of the blues, is played with more swing and has enjoyed style variations over the years. Texas Blues began to appear in the early 1900s among African Americans who worked in oilfields, ranches and lumber camps and in the 1920s, Blind Lemon Jefferson, one of the most popular blues singers of that time, and who has been titled "Father of the Texas Blues", innovated the style by using jazz-like improvisation and single string accompaniment on a guitar. His influence defined the field and inspired later performers. Born in 1954, Dallas native Stevie Ray Vaughn contributed to the variations by using various types of guitar sounds like southern slide and different melodies of blues and jazz. Texas blues also relies on guitar solos or "licks" as bridges in songs. But Dallas has had many more legendary names, who are making a mark on the world of blues: Freddie King, T-Bone Walker, Blind Lemon Jefferson and, of course, Stevie Ray Vaughn all have dominated blues charts across the web. But again, Dallas lays claim to many blues artists who've stayed under the mainstream media’s radar, but who are building their own legends by blazing local and national stages over decades.

Miss Marcy and the Texas SugarDaddy’s You can easily get lost in the gravelly angelic voice of Miss Marcy who is leading the pack of the Dallas Blues scene. In a music genre dominated by men, Miss Marcy has made a name for herself after years on the club gigs, parties, and festival circuit. But after recording her debut album in 2010 with the SugarDaddy’s, she is definitive proof that the Blues are timeless. Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones No one knows the blues better than Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones. Although he's played guitar with Freddie King's backing ensemble, jammed with Johnnie Taylor, blues vocalist and local Dallas legend the "Reverend" R.L. Griffin., Jr. Boy's contributions to the blues will long be remembered by fans worldwide thoughindividual success has somehow eluded him most of his life. However, in 1995, he was part of the ensemble that garnered a Blues Music Award as the 'Band of the Year'. Mike Morgan Mike Morgan has been slinging his Fender Strat with local and regional bands and teaching other people how to sling theirs for years. His band Mike Morgan and The Crawl was once considered one of the best contemporary blues bands in Texas, releasing such hits as Raw & Ready, Full Moon Over Dallas and The Road. Envision an outlaw biker with a badass black eye patch. Now visualize him with a guitar! That modern image gives a new meaning to badass! Wanda King You cannot honor a blues list without a king (or in this case a Queen king!) representing it, and there is no one better than Freddie king’s daughter, one of the Three Blues Kings. Wanda King has been stepping out of her father's shadow since she fronted her brother Fred Jr.'s band in grade school. Opening for David Sanborn, Johnny Winter and The Blues Brothers, King has become Queen all by herself. Christina Castle is a freelance writer who lives in Dallas, TX.
