with its retail partners, BMW plans the North American debut of several exciting custom bikes and to showcase multiple design concepts at AIMExpo. BMW S 1000RR The innovative structure of AIMExpo allows exhibitors the unique opportunity to closely interact with trade, media and consumer attendees in a decidedly desirable setting, all highly appealing attributes for new exhibitors. BMW’s ability to hold its annual assembly of U.S. retailers in one place, at one time, and in the right place, at the right time creates a greater business efficiency for both dealers and the OEM. Traditionally, the Dealer Business Meeting and Aftersales Conference
were held as two separate meetings, at separate locations. The return on investment (ROI) is enhanced by the opportunity to also unveil a key new product at a strategic time to all aspects of the North American marketplace. BMW S 1000XR Graphic “AIMExpo is a rapidly growing event that delivers the perfect platform for BMW Motorrad USA to gather together our key partners. The annual Business Meeting and Aftersales Conference are strategically scheduled to allow exclusive time and focus with our retailers, while also presenting them the opportunity to take in the full AIMExpo experience,” said Sarah Schilke, National Marketing Manager, BMW Motorrad USA. “Beyond the core business with our retailers, AIMExpo provides the unique opportunity for BMW to showcase our new 2016 models and aftersales products to the broad marketplace in an allinclusive setting, and we’ll be debuting an all new display to do just that.” “I am absolutely thrilled BMW will be joining us
in Orlando in October, and for significantly more reasons than the fact that they are a renowned global OEM,” said Larry Little Vice President and General Manager, Marketplace Events Motorcycle Group. “In combining the site and timing of their legacy meetings they are taking maximum advantage of the AIMExpo platform for greatly improved business efficiency while also energizing the market through the reveal of new product. This type of deployment of the platform is exactly what we envisioned from the earliest conceptual moments of AIMExpo, and we look forward to welcoming new trade attendees to the show with BMW’s dealer body.” BMW R nineT More than 270 exhibitors have already committed to AIMExpo in 2015. Exhibitor presence builds each day and companies looking to take advantage of the AIMExpo platform should contact an AIMExpo Account Manager toll free at 855-MCShows (855-627-4697).

Bell Helmets—60 years and going strong! All of us here at Born To Ride get opportunities to meet some remarkable people who are “movers and shakers” in the motorcycling world. I’m going to share with you some interesting facts about Bell Helmets! Interesting enough, my very first helmet was a Bell Helmet! Of course, it had to color-match my bike! But more importantly, Bell Helmets has been around a long time and it’s a name that most motorcyclists know. The reputation of the company stands alone! I had the opportunity to spend some time talking with Chris Sacket. Chris is the vice
president and general manager for Bell Power Sports. “I’ve been with the company for 11 years. I’ve held several roles with Bell; I came on in 2004 when Bell got back into the motorcycling business. Previously, they had leant this business portion of the company in 1991 so they could solely focus on bicycle helmets as well as building a bicycle brand of helmets. Unfortunately, for the next 14 years, the outsourcing company didn’t do the Bell Helmet company or product justice. Our company was started in America and needs to stay in America— keeping the American standard and ethos.” Bell realized that this prior decision was
hurting the Bell helmet—motorcycling division—and also saw that people weren’t recognizing the brand anymore because it was being run through the mill. In 2003, Bell brought the license back to North America. Chris was hired to resurrect it. In 2013, Bell came to North America worldwide! “In 2013, we started selling Bell motorcycle helmets again world wide—having them produced again in North America.” Chris is no stranger to motorcycling! “I started racing motorcycles when I was 4 then at 18, I started racing for a motorcycle shop. When I graduated high school and started college, I was hired at this shop

to run the parts counter. I quickly moved from parts to sales then sales to finance department then to the general manager. This store started out with three people and ended up with 120 people! It’s one of the largest motorcycle shops in the US! I convinced the two owners of the company to start manufacturing apparel, specializing in helmets first. With this job, I got to meet a lot of people while travelling. I had the opportunity to meet the CEO of Bell and he explained to me the on-going process of obtaining the rights of bringing Bell Helmets production back to the states.” From that conversation, Chris started his passion with Bell Helmets. Now in 2015, the Bell Helmet division is stronger than ever! “We have a full R & D (Research & Development) department, seven dedicated sales reps throughout the
United States, a products creation team, graphic designers, packaging designers, inside sales. We are probably the number 1 brand in the US and the number 4 brand in the world. Our approach to helmets and marketing is definitely unique. We don’t look at anyone else’s product; we do our own thing. If we set up at events, we do our own brand and appeal. This is who we are.” Chris and I touched on the point about wearing or not wearing a helmet. “Fifteen years or so ago, young kids that were into racing always wore their helmets. It’s now branched off into skate boarding and snowboarding and snow skiing. It’s just a part of the culture for them. Every country in the world has a mandatory helmet law except for the US. We don’t push helmets on people; I don’t believe in doing that. It seems like it’s getting more the ‘norm’ of
people wearing helmets—not specifically in motorcycling—but other sports out there today.” Bell was founded in 1954 by auto racing enthusiast, Roy Richter. Roy perceived the need for safety in the auto racing field and moved to put products in place to serve that need. “Roy was an innovator. He worked at Bell Auto Parts that was owned by a man named George Wright. So, Roy worked in Mr. Wright’s speed shop in Bell, California. Southern California was a hot bed for hot rod cars, street racing, and going to the local track and racing. Roy worked on these race cars. When Roy bought the business when George Wright retired, Roy had a lot of friends that were getting hurt or dying in the same year from crashes. He said, ‘I’m going to help my friends continue racing and

have them get a better chance of survival.’ So, the tinkerer and inventor that he was he came up with the idea of a fiberglass shell. In fact, the first helmet he came up with had a suspension system! That was 1954! Soon after that, 1956, he worked with a company developing helmets for the military. They invented one with Styrofoam. He worked with this company and basically bought them out. He came out with his first helmet; a composite shell with expanded poly styrene liner. They used this helmet in car racing, motorcycle racing—a crash helmet for anything. He came out with a half helmet for motorcycle riders, and then in the late 60s he designed the full face helmet—The Star. This came about when a car racer was struck in the face with a piece of shrapnel that came off another race car. They commercialized the full-face helmet and it became available in the 1970s. Then
motocross racers wanted full coverage as did motorcycle racers. But the dust was getting up underneath the helmet opening and making it difficult to see. So they modified the Bell Star so that the rider could wear goggles and wear the helmet as well. “We’re getting back in the motorcycle helmet game. But, we got the rights back again in 2004. We really kicked it into gear in 2010. Now, we’re global. We even have the custom-fit motorcycle helmet. We scan your head and make a helmet specific to your head shape. Just last month we launched a new helmet where it has three different types of foam, not just EPS, it has different densities to allow broad spectrum energy when the helmet has been hit. We are also the very first bicycle helmet company, and motorcycle helmet company. We are part of the larger company; we are focusing on managing energy better-
reducing head energy (impact).” I was really enjoying my conversation with Chris, but had to wind it down. I asked him to share some final comments about Bell and the future for this company. “I can’t tell you how much passion each one of us has in this business. There are some of us that spend 70-80 hours a week refining our business. We are very driven. You think that every member of the company owns this business just because of the passion and commitment each one has! We have a great team that is making it happen. It’s not about making the helmets and slapping a brand on it. We are about doing the right thing on American soil.” Thank you, Chris, for spending time with me in sharing with the Born To Ride readers, this amazing story about Bell Helmets! Susan Hurst
