Routine inspection and lubrication of the clutch cable will help prevent it from breaking. If it breaks while you’re in motion, it’s possible to shift the motorcycle without the clutch—just roll off the throttle and press hard on the lever. It will be jerky and probably not quiet, but it will get you into the next gear.

BROKEN CLUTCH CABLE

Stopping smoothly with a broken clutch cable is more complicated. If possible, travel to a place where help will be available, or where you will at least be able to pull off and park the bike in a safe place while you go to find help. Slow the bike gradually, downshifting one gear at a time until you arrive at first gear. If possible, shift the bike into neutral before you come to a stop (though this will be difficult on some bikes). If you are unable to find neutral, wait until you’re ready to stop, then shut off the engine using the engine cut-off switch. Be prepared—with the engine and transmission still engaged, this stop will be anything but smooth. If the clutch cable breaks while the motorcycle is stopped, quickly apply the brakes, forcing the engine to stall. Some motorcycles are equipped with hydraulic clutches that use fluid pressure instead of a cable to engage and disengage the clutch. A rapid loss of fluid will cause a problem identical to a broken cable: you won’t havecontrol over the clutch mechanism, and the same emergency procedures will apply.

the way life is sometimes in movies. And then he phoned – a strange coincidence – a few months ago. I just thought I would give him a call and see how he was. I wanted to know how he was after the disappointment of Hemingway, and he asked, “Tony did you get my message?” I said, “No.” He said, “I just left you a message.” “What?” He said, “I’ve got a script … you’re not phoning me to answer my message?” I said, “No. I haven’t even picked up my messages this morning.” He said, “Oh, well this is propitious or fortuitous. I’ve got the script here called THE WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN. A beautiful story; I don’t know if you would be interested in playing a racing driver, a racing bloke.” So I got the script that afternoon and I thought it was just terrific. It is a unique script, I don’t know what it is about it; it is just well written, very very well written, beautifully written, and so refreshing. It’s not the bang bang, of big Hollywood movies. It’s got much more variety and for me it’s a big change because it’s a real winner of a guy. I’ve had a good career playing psychopaths or uptight people, and I’m fed up with those, I don’t want to play any more of them. This is my life now, I’m a very happy guy and Burt Munro’s philosophy and character suits my temperament.

Anthony Hopkins On Burt Munro

Anthony Hopkins stars as Burt Munro, a man who never let the dreams of youth fade. In the late 1960s, after a lifetime of perfecting his classic Indian motorcycle, Burt sets off from the bottom of the world, Invercargill, New Zealand, to clock his bike at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. With all odds against him, Burt puts his irrepressible kiwi spirit to the test, braving the new world on a shoestring budget. He makes fast friends of many he encounters along the way who find themselves swept up in his energy and singular determination. Burt’s quest culminates in an unlikely conclusion and remains legendary within the motorcycle community to this day. THE WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN is a script based on Burt Munro’s journeys to Bonneville during the 1960s. It follows the road to fulfilling a dream – and the magic in the true story of a man who believed, “If it’s hard, work

BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM

harder; if it’s impossible, work harder still. Give it whatever it takes, but do it.” Playing this eccentric and lovable character is Academy Award Winner? Anthony Hopkins. THE WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN captures Munro with all his power, his determination, his creativity, his charm, his eccentricity – told through the eyes of a director who knew the man personally, and has never wavered from his own dream of making Munro’s story.

Anthony Hopkins On getting involved with the project

I worked with Roger Donaldson years ago on The Bounty, 1983, in Tahiti and New Zealand. Then years passed by and I hadn’t seen Roger for a longtime, and then we were going to do a movie called Papa, about Ernest Hemingway, and that didn’t work out. And Roger was kind of disappointed and so was I; but that’s

Well I’m no speed freak myself, but Burt Munro, in the documentary that Roger filmed, Burt loved speed. He was, I don’t know if he was obsessed with it, but he loved the thrill of speed, he said that you can live more in 5 minutes on a motorbike going high speed than you can in your whole lifetime. That was the challenge. I suppose there are obviously people who flirt with mortality. I mean, you’re taking a huge challenge, a courageous challenge to risk your life … Donald Campbell was the same, to break the world speed water record. And he was killed in the process, breaking the actual record, and he said he was scared every time he got into Bluebird. But that was it - to overcome fear is the greatest virtuous courage and I think Burt is one of those characters, one of those guys. That’s his whole philosophy of life, to live life to the full, because “When you’re dead you’re a longtime dead” he says, and “Once you’re dead you never come back.” I’m not a speed thrill freak though - I’m a careful driver, so I don’t like speed. I used to when I was younger but now, I like to live.

Anthony Hopkins On the Script

It is such a good script, Roger wrote it and I’ll add little things here and there; it’s not written in stone. But it is such a good script you don’t need to change the structure of it, and I don’t want to replace lines. But I sometimes make a line sound more natural because I may have difficulty with the consonant sound which is too New Zealand for me and I’ll say well can I ... ? For example, I’ve got one coming which is “No harm in asking.” Well I don’t know if I can handle that, so I’ll say “Well I thought I would

Did you know: Munro’s Indian Scout was a early off the production line, the 627th Scout to leave the factory.

ask.” I don’t know, maybe I will just put it that way and say “I thought I’d ask,” which is easier. Little things like that, anything to make it simpler.

Anthony Hopkins On working with Roger

If you have a director who has an equanimity in his temperament, that’s good. If you get someone shouting and screaming – and that can come from an actor as well and I’ve done that in my past and I admit it; that doesn’t help anyone. If you can express irritability take it aside instead of being public about it. … Some directors are vociferous and noisy and scream and shout and you can’t work like that. With this crew, which is the best crew I have worked with in many years, why create trouble? Just get on with your job, learn your lines, as the guy’s preparing his lighting and the sound guys are doing their stuff, and the props and wardrobe people, everyone’s doing a job and that’s what it is. … That’s what it is, it’s a job and I’ve taken some years to learn how to settle into this kind of respect for people for what they’re doing. And maybe Burt’s spirit is around us, because he seemed to be such a decent fun man and I liked his wonderful sense of humor, when he only loved the ladies and says, “Well I think a nice couple of ladies around can help a party go.” You know, I love that bloke Burt, he was – he’s a great, great personality, probably a very generous man as well.

Director Roger Donaldson Statement

I first met him late one winter’s night in Invercargill in 1971. Burt was excited that some young filmmakers had come all the way down from Auckland to meet this old man and discuss the possibility of a documentary about his exploits. In his enthusiasm he wheeled an old 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle out of the cinder-block shed where he lived and jumped on the kick- starter. The engine roared to life; a sound to split your eardrums. Lights started coming on in the neighbors’ houses. When Burt finally stopped revving the engine and you could once again hear, the night was filled with the yells of his disapproving neighbors suggesting that 11 p.m. was an inappropriate time to start “demonstrating” his un-muffled motorcycle.

Roger Donaldson On Burt Munro

Did you know: Munro’s Indian Scout was a early off the production line, the 627th Scout to leave the factory.

He was a character and I think that if we captured that great quality that he had about what he was doing with his life, we will have made a great film. He was really, really happy although there were things that happened in his life that I’m sure had an impact on him, like when he was 14, his twin brother was killed. I’m sure that must have had an impact on him. Not that he ever admitted it, but this was a guy who, as his grandson said, wanted to die with his boots on. … This was a guy who really loved motorcycles and was obviously very talented in riding them and was also very talented in making them go fast. He also had an interesting philosophy on his life. And it is that philosophy about growing old and having dreams and ambition … that’s what I think that this movie is about, it’s less about his motorbike in a way, it’s less about motorcycles, it’s more about just the philosophy of life.

ANGEL CITY MOTORCYCLE RALLY... PUT THIS RALLY ON YOUR BUCKET LIST!

This month BTR takes you to Unadilla, Georgia … smack dab in the middle of the great state of Georgia. Angel City is 100 acres of land totally designed, operated, and dedicated to the biker lifestyle. It’s unlike any other place in the world. Angel City delivers wonderful and unexpected surprises, so everyone who goes there once wants to return. It’s a full western town, with circular road, camping and RVing for bikers, live music, and quality vendors. But it’s much, much more than that, it’s the place to be twice a year, spring and fall. At this years’ 4-day Angel City Motorcycle Rally, we noticed that this great biker event had a heart and spirit all of its own that other rallies can only dream about. The Angel City Rally is about brotherhood, friendship, freedom, and of course, having a good time! The first person I rounded up was the owner of Angel City, John Smith and asked him to introduce himself so he could give us a little history about the angel City Rally. “I’m John Wayne Smith, and I own Angel City, the best biker rally, I think, in the state of Georgia. Right here in middle Georgia, Unadilla,

Georgia. I got my first scooter 47 years ago and I’ve been riding on and off all my life. I’ve raised my family. My wife passed away after 28 years of marriage. I flipped out and started going to more rallies. We always went to rallies. Anyway, after she died, I came back home and decided I was going to build Angel City because I was tired of seeing all the big rallies over charge people. I got a $2 beer I call, ‘Home of the $2 Beer’ ‘cause I wanted to bring the old west back to Georgia because you go to Sturgis and see what they have there, and I said, ‘Why can’t we do it over here?’ and we done it here. I named it Angel City ‘cause my wife that passed away was my angel. I named her town, Angel City. Since then, I remarried and her name is Dawn. She runs the office and works with me just like my first wife did. And the thing about this all put together, man, that there ain’t nobody luckier than me. God’s blessed me more than twice; I’ve got one angel in heaven waiting on me and one walkin’ the earth with me. And the thing about Angel City is you can come to Angel City and it’s all about the brotherhood of the biker community. When you come to

If you’ve never been to Angel City put it on your Bucket List - Ron Gelletti

a bike rally like Angel City, it doesn’t matter if you sitting there and there’s a Philadelphia lawyer or a guy making minimum wage sitting beside him. They shake hands and drink beer, tell jokes, and be buddies all day long. It ain’t nothing about education; it ain’t nothing about how much money you got, it’s about the brotherhood and the sisterhood of riding scooters. And I invite people to come to Angel City that’s never rode so you can experience what these people do. What makes you rich? It ain’t money. Money ain’t got nothing to do with being rich. It’s the brotherhood and the sisterhood and the people that love you and respect you and would be there for you when you need them.” At that point I was feeling goose bumps on my arms because this guy understands the true meaning of the brotherhood and sisterhood that we share in the motorcycle community. He went on to tell me more about his vision for Angel City. “Oh man, we’ve got people that come from everywhere. But all the campsites, like I say, there are 264 of them. We’ve got 50 amp service then through the woods, we’ve

got primitive camping and then we’ve got dry camping. If you come here you’re gonna find something. It’s totally different than anything. People here have no problems. So where you gonna go where it’s a safer place. And besides that, where you gonna go in Georgia? I’ve have people from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Norway, England, and Canada. Everybody on the east coast is missin’ the best, biggest rally, private-owned rally in the country. You ain’t gotta pay $4, $5, $6 for a beer. We have

BTR 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM

$2 beers and great entertainment. Our bands start anywhere from 12 p.m. to 2 o’clock in the morning for four full days. And all it costs you is $45 a ticket. You can’t go out to eat for two people for that. Now, I guess, that’s pretty much it; other than me being John Wayne, I grew up being a cowboy-Indian boy and that’s what I believe in. And a handshake is still good as gold here. This 100 acre of Angel City is America and it will always be America. But if you don’t come, it’s your loss. If you do come,

you’ll always come back because I swear, I promise you, one thing for sure; you will have a good time.” Now for those of you who have never met Georgia BTR magazine Publisher Stewart Fincher, let me just say he is not shy, so when I found him holding court at the watering hole I had to ask him how things were going. “It’s a beautiful day out here! We’re having a great time, bikes showing up everywhere.

Make plans now with your friends! Next Rally is October 22nd – 26th, 2014

WATCH ONLINE!! Never been to a venue quite like this … man, this is the place! Angel City is the hottest spot we’ve found in Georgia yet. It’s all about the bikers, folks. This is my first rally here at Angel City. But Wayne and Dawn have gone out of their way to make this a biker-friendly place in Georgia We really want to support everybody we can, help network, bring people, biker family, to the table. And help everybody get better at what they do.” As Stewart turned to greet a friend, I asked his wife Myra what she thought of the rally … you know mama’s gotta have her say too! “Love it! Absolutely love it! It’s an awesome place; the atmosphere today couldn’t be better. We’re getting out everywhere we can and meeting new people—bringing new people into our family. We’re just loving it and so thankful to be blessed!”

BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Next I met Michelle, the owner of Strip Club Choppers Southeast; she told me why they were at the rally. “We came to Angel City to show ‘Hope’—our cancer-awareness bike that Eric and I built. Eric is over in Afghanistan. We wanted this bike to be something that brought awareness to cancer across the world as we travel. And she has 18 ribbons of hope, representing all forms of cancer. And we hope that all people are now aware of that pink’s not just the only color. I’m a survivor, two-times, I was first diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 18. I had another surgery again at 34. Eric lost his Poppa to cancer and his mother also battled the disease.” “We started from the frame up. We used one of our Strip Club Chopper frames as well as our builder back home in Augusta, Rick. Every piece of this bike is thought out. We had a beautiful paint job creation done by Rob Little

Man Custom Creations in Augusta, GA. It was a big family and business idea that came together and lived out a dream for me.” For an event this big, Born To Ride can’t fit all the rally photos into one issue, so log onto http://www.borntoride.com/fl/eventsph. html to view more photos. Let me tell you, Angel City is the real deal, and once you come you will feel the same as I do now! To really understand the true essence of the Angel City Rally, I think John Wayne Smith says it best, “I may own Angel City, but Angel City doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to the people of the biker community of the sisters and brothers that ride scooters; all sisters and brothers that ride scooters ... Next one not to miss is the Fall Rally Oct. 22nd – 26th 2014. For more info: AngelCityMotorcycleRally.com

Women’s World

THE SPIRIT OF THE RIDE Yes. To some this would be called a midlife crisis. I was approaching 50 and wanted to experience life. I had been told all my life that motorcycles were dangerous. So I now had this uncontrollable urge to try it. I wanted to at least be taken as a passenger. Getting on a bike as a passenger had me feeling terrified and excited simultaneously, forming the most arousing adventurous desires I had ever felt before. An attorney feeling out of control and trusting others, especially with my life, was just unheard of. Had anyone told me I would be riding motorcycles before, I would have thought they had lost their minds. However, riding hugely changed this controlling and untrusting thinking. I was fortunate to have met some great riders who invited me and allowed me to ride as a passenger. Once I rode, I knew had I found something I was going to do for a very long time. I wanted to ride every opportunity I could get. When I became a passenger on a bike it was a transformation and it was the beginning of a whole new life for me. Trusting the driver with my life, feeling helplessly out of control, whilst at the same time feeling in control of the road, gave me a whole new world of adventure and excitement. Riding made me feel empowered, able to conquer anything I wanted. The more I rode, the stronger and more confidence it gave me It was about living passionately and fully, my way. The world of biking is a world all of its own. It embraces people from all walks of life. Bikers understand bikers and they look after each other. While riding, they all greet each other as they pass by. In general, there is no classifying and judging each other. One biker could be poor and be a high school drop-out while the other is a wealthy businessperson. It makes no difference

when riding. You simply become a welcomed rider. After a few rides as a passenger, my itch to learn how to ride became more and more intense with each and every ride. I had never had control of a bike and did not have a clue how to ride one on my own. I couldn’t resist the urge to learn and surrendered to taking the classes for my endorsement. My decision to ride and to get my endorsement was met with much resistance from practically everyone I knew. I was discouraged by almost everyone. Some people even laughed at me saying that I was just going through a midlife crises and it will pass if I give it time. Others tried to make me feel stupid and absurd for even considering riding a motorcycle. Some ridiculed me questioning my ability to ever learn and be able to handle a bike. Yes I admit that my ego was hurt and some doubts started to set in but I knew better then to listen to any naysayers. Some naysayers are just people too weak to follow their own dreams and they look for ways to discourage those that take action. These naysayers fear that your success becomes a threat to their failure when you prove that something can be done. Remember the saying misery loves company. Other naysayers are weak and fearful and they want the best for you but they let fear control their life and rob them from truly living. We all have everything we need to succeed within us and with that mindset I knew there was no reason for me to be unable to learn to ride. I was ready! Big exciting surprise as I had no clue what I was in for. The moment I sat on a bike that I had full control of and I hit that throttle my heart was forever a biker’s heart. There was no turning

“The mom I sat on aent bike that I full controlhad and I hit th of throttle myat heart was fo bikerr’sevheeraa rt.”

back! I was passionately in love forever with this powerful machinery called a motorcycle. What an intense, heart throbbing experience. The power, the control and the freedom is like nothing you can compare. Wrapping your legs around this powerful machine and controlling its every move is indescribable. To understand you have to just do it. One of the funniest things I realized when I started riding was the expression I saw women on bikes get from others. If you want attention, riding a bike will surely get you that. In the past people only knew me as a business suited professional lawyer, not as a biker. When they find out I ride motorcycles I just love watching their expressions of pure shock. They typically ask me twice to make sure they heard correctly. I say ‘yes’! At 5’ 1.5” I can be professional and serious, and still be free as a biker in a biker’s world. In life you should be and do all you want; never put yourself in a box. Experiencing the power, speed, breeze on your face and the freedom of the road is a phenomenal and mind-blowing experience, and yes the rush of the danger too. Remember, it is utterly important that you learn to ride properly. Get a mentor and that’s a must. Mentors can teach you all the extras that you need to know and won’t learn in your endorsement class. Don’t be foolish and try to get out and start riding on your own. Practice, practice and practice before you venture out. In the meantime keep riding as a passenger if you must and observe what experienced riders do. Be patient and soon you will be an incredible rider on your own. Never ever doubt yourself and never listen to naysayers. Enjoy life and live passionately. Put passion and enthusiasm in all you do. SUNCOAST We are blessed to live in a state where we are surrounded by water and sunshine. People come from all over the world to our beautiful state, enjoying what we, sometimes, take for granted.

Like our state and many attractions, the 30th Annual Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix will be welcoming people from all over the globe, starting on Saturday, June 28. Beautiful Sarasota will be the location of this event. It’s something you don’t want to miss! There will be 15 different events spread over eight days! I had the pleasure of meeting with Lucy Nicandri, Festival Director of the Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix. “I got involved as a volunteer slinging soft drinks the second year of the event. I kept coming back year after year because I enjoyed it so much! This is my 28th year with the Festival.”

I really didn’t know what the boat race was all about. In my mind’s eye, I thought that boats line up at a starting point and raced to an ending point. So, I needed to know what exactly is involved in these races. Lucy was patient in her explanation to this Landlubber! “It’s an oval track on the water off from Lido Beach. The race course is 5.5 miles long depending on how many laps the boats will be doing. It is spectator friendly due to the fact that the boats come in fairly close to the beach. There are two starts; one at 11 and one at 1. The smaller boats start at 11 and the larger boats start at 1. This is a sanctioned event that thousands of people attend annually.”

The big to-do with this year’s event is the July 5 “Finz Finds Motorcycle Freedom Ride.” Registration is at either Rossiter’s HarleyDavidson on Cattleman Road or Manatee River Harley-Davidson off State Road 64 in Bradenton. Registration is from 9:30-11:30, $10 per rider (which goes to Sun Coast Charities for Children). This year’s ride honors all veterans, active duty military, and their families. “The Sarasota National Cemetery has constructed an Amphitheatre on Patriot Plaza. It’s a great facility that is opening the doors on June 28 to the public. The Patterson Foundation in Sarasota has been a big supporter of the Patriot Plaza. It was their idea to construct it. We partnered with them so motorcyclists can go out and view it and at the same time, pay respects to our veterans who are buried out there. On Saturday, July 5, every rider will be given a red, white, and blue carnation that they can lay on a grave. It’s going to bring home patriotism.” Speaking of the Patterson Foundation, I had the opportunity to speak with President and CEO Debra Jacobs. The Patterson Foundation has a major role in this event. “We created the Legacy of Valor Campaign which is a mosaic of 100 different partnerships to do three things: 1) honor veterans 2) inspire patriotism and 3) embrace freedom.

BOAT

Each one of these partnerships builds upon what the organization did but they had to partner with others. We are very big on not doing anything in isolation; we work in partnership with others. During this campaign and knowing that the Patriot Plaza was under construction, we approached the Suncoast Charities for Children because they have their annual Thunder By The Bay event where an annual ride is incorporated into this event. We presented them with the concept of doing something with the Legacy of Valor Run since that was the theme for our campaign. I would tell you that partnership with this charity is exemplary. They tried to connect as many dots as they could in reaching out to the various veterans groups. The Suncoast Charities for Children is a totally phenomenal group!”

“So with the grand opening of the Patriot Plaza on June 28, we contacted Lucy and her team and asked how we could tie in this grand opening with the Power Boat Grand Prix. That’s when the idea of the Freedom Ride came about. I will tell you when the Legacy of Valor ride occurred in January and all those motorcyclists came through the cemetery, it gave you goose bumps. We’re excited to build upon the freedom theme with this ride on July 5! Another nice addition to those taking and being a part of the Finz Finds Motorcycle Freedom Ride is that at the end of the ride, there will be a 3-2-1 giveaway! Lucy explains, “We are going to have one $300 winner, one $200 winner, and one $100 winner. Your name will be placed in a big rolling bin and three names will be drawn! This will be held at the Finz Finds Tent at the VanWezel parking lot.”

There will be something for everyone starting June 28. From a golf tournament, parade, and block party, this event will create some fun and a substantial economic impact for the county. Lucy explains, “Last year this event generated $17 million dollars in economic impact and supported 13,400 room nights in area lodging. That equaled $1.6 million of total hotel impact. The race also provided a state sales tax reimbursement to the county of over $62,900! The county resort tax recovered was also over $83,000.” As we sat comfortably at Applebee’s enjoying the yummy appetizer plate, we discussed in detail all the fun things going on during the Suncoast Power Boat Grand Prix. In our conversation, Lucy mentioned to me how much the bikers’ involvement has increased. “The motorcycle component has grown over the years. At the end of the Freedom Ride, the riders will end up at Power Boats By The Bay. There, they can see these beautiful power boats on display, enter their bike in the popular Born To Ride custom bike show, with special thanks to attorney Fran Haasch. Enjoy live music,

and shop at the many bike vendors that will be set up. It’s going to be really nice with live bands, boats going in and out of the water, and taking in the excitement that this live event offers. This will be at the VanWezel parking lot, located on 10th street and 41 in Sarasota.” There is NO CHARGE to stop by the VanWezel parking lot! Bring the family and make a day of it!

Most importantly is WHY this event is being held! It’s all for the Suncoast Charities for Children. The past 29 years has allowed construction of various facilities valued over $14 million. These facilities have been constructed in order to serve children with special needs and their families in the North Port, Venice, and Sarasota areas. Proceeds raised from the Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Festival continue to help maintain buildings and support special projects. This is beneficial so that the nonprofits occupying these facilities can direct their program and service money towards clients they serve, where it is needed the most.

Thankfully, I had the pleasure of speaking with John T. Stafford. Mr. Stafford was one of the Super Boat Gran Prix Festival Founders! “I stayed involved for 25 years. The company that I’m involved with still gives a sizeable donation to the festival each year. I still believe in the initial objective that we had years ago. We were basically involved with the local shrine center. That’s how we knew each other. A man named Hollis Tucker would get the children together for a day at the fair. Hollis would get us together every year and we would sign up. We were given a child to be with throughout the day. We would get them on the rides and see the smiles on their faces and have lunch with them at the fair. This is how we came to know about these special needs children. These children weren’t able to get their requirements properly addressed through the school system. We found out that there were state funds available for the treatment of these children, but there weren’t any treatment facilities available for the children. So that’s where we came up with the idea for the fundraiser—the start of the Power Boat Grand Prix Festival. We wanted to create a fundraiser to provide treatment facilities for physically challenged children and to avoid spending money for administrative overhead. That’s very important! With every other charity out there, a big chunk of the money raised goes to administrative overhead. We have none of that with our fundraiser! Through the efforts of over 1,000 volunteers each year, we have been successful in achieving our initial objective.”

All of us at Born To Ride hope to see you in Sarasota during the 30th Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Festival! Boats, bikes, race fever, and all the components needed for a great fun-filled week will be in abundance! I will be there! Will you?

The Tradition Continues‌

In 1991, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches had the opportunity to develop another campus site in the Bradenton/Sarasota area. The Manatee River Youth Ranch had been founded in 1984 through the joint efforts of concerned citizens, the Kiwanis Club of Bradenton and the Manatee County Commissioners. Many individuals involved in both programs supported the merger of the site into the Youth Ranches network of residential sites to help meet the needs of boys from the southwestern part of the state. The campus is set on 62 naturally beautiful acres in the eastern part of Manatee County and currently serves 30 boys. It includes three cottages, the McCune Maintenance and Vocational Center, the Ruth Bell Learning Center, the WilsonWood Activity Center, Selby Barn, the Kiwanis Club of Bradenton Administration Building, Linnie Dalbeck Memorial Pool and various other recreational facilities.

The signing of documents to add the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch in Bradenton/Sarasota as the newest site to serve deserving youth was complete on October 1, 1991. Witnessing this great event were (seated) Sarasota County Sheriff Geoff Monge, Youth Ranches President Harry K. Weaver, Manatee River Board Member Barbara B. Smith, Youth Ranches Board Member Ben Sizemore. Standing (L-R) are Group Care Worker Bruce Dotson, Counselor Dale Thompson, Youth Ranches Internal Auditor Wesley Goff, VP Planned Giving Bill Brown, Board Member Dan Hagar, Staff Member Delores McKinny, Regional Director Bill Aust, VP Youth Services Jim Strayer, Group Care Worker Judy Winterton, Regional Director Bill Biebuyck and Staff Member James McKinney.

Dean DeSantis

I told you one by land, two by sea, or three by both. When you’re a biker and you love what you do, you love the open water and the sea, why not do it all! I caught up with Dean DeSantis and Captain Kenny at the Chart House Marina in Daytona Beach. They have got this system tricked out! They like riding, they like Bike Week, and they like the water. Isn’t that right, Dean? “That’s right! We started coming up to Bike Week about 10 years ago and have been doing it ever since. We finally got wise; we have the boat, we have the bikes, why not make the best of two worlds. So we rigged up the boat to garage the bikes. Now we bring them up with us, keeping them on the boat and on the docks. The people here at Daytona Boat Works have been nothing but friendly with us, allowing us to keep the bikes right here next to the boat. It gives us a way to enjoy both combinations of the boat and the bikes! We look forward to riding. We love the freedom of being on the water, being on the road with the bikes. Anything that puts your hair in the wind, we want to be a part of it. We are looking for a great weekend here in Daytona and we’ll be back again in October as well!” I like how you say that, too. There are some people that are a little bit pompous that say, It’s not a boat, it’s a yacht (while holding up her little pinky finger.) You’re being very humble about it all, Dean! That’s not a boat you have; it’s a yacht! “Yeah, it is! It’s got to be big enough to get the bikes in the garage! We really still consider this a boat. I’m a down-to-earth guy who loves being with my friends and riding and having a good time. It’s all about people and that’s what we try to do. Wherever we can do both and enjoy our friends, we’re going to do it and take advantage of the situation. We come up from Ft. Lauderdale and the people here in Daytona make it so great for us. We have such a good time!” Well Dean, give us some specs on the ‘boat.’ “Alright! It’s a 94’ Italian boat called a Feretti. It sleeps eight or more— depending on how well you want to know your friends! It’s 25’ across the beam. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a big boat! It has the space that we are able to put the bikes in the garage. The bikes have special harnesses that they travel in. It works out really well! Again, we get to enjoy the bikes and boating all at the same time!” Okay, you’re up on the top running the winch. How does that work? “Basically it’s a davit that’s installed on big boats. You can use this for jet skis, tenders, or those types of items as well. With a 900 lb capacity we thought, ‘Ah ha! Maybe we can take the motorcycles with us!’ So we got a couple things made that makes the bikes not roll around on the high seas. We take the tender Jet Ski off and put the bikes on. Then we hook up the crane and put them on the boat.” “The first time here doing this, we had quite the crowd at the dock watching as we were unloading the bikes. And when you’ve got your $40,000 Eddie Trotta bike swinging in the breeze over the water, it’s a little nerve wracking! We’ve got it down to a science now, both me and Captain Ken. We really enjoy it and people get a kick out of it. This is a great way to be able to take the bike with you and utilize it wherever you may go.” This was a great story! Thanks for spending the time with us today and giving us the tour of the boat as you call it! You guys are loving life here and having a good time! More power to you! “Thanks so very, very much. And like I said, we just look forward to riding here. It’s such a great time here at Daytona. I have to say the weather is going to be beautiful this weekend. So we’re ready to go riding. We’re ‘Jonesing!’ We’re ready to get out there and experience that feeling we’ve been wanting for the last couple days!” Shake off those sea legs and get those land legs going! There’s an old saying: ‘He who has the most toys wins.’ But he who can take the most toys with him, rig up that crane and roll them off the dock, in my opinion, is the winner!

“SECOND CHANCES DO COME YOUR WAY. LIKE TRAINS, THEY ARRIVE AND DEPART REGULARLY. RECOGNIZING THE ONES THAT MATTER IS THE TRICK.” ~ JILL A. DAVIS

S

am Childers, also known as the Machine Gun Preacher, has lived the life that can only be characterized by a Hollywood movie. Actually, Hollywood did create a movie, aptly titled the Machine Gun Preacher, starring Gerard Butler, which chronicles Sam Childers’ humanitarian work in Southern Sudan and Uganda. With a great deal of help from providence and the special people we meet along the way in this journey we call life, Sam became a missionary in Sudan. While in Sudan, he witnessed atrocities that have changed his life forever. The former drug dealer now reformed, has been described as Africa’s Rambo, the machine gun preacher who has unashamedly armed himself to rescue child soldiers kidnapped in Sudan and Uganda. Rev. Childers’ remarkable story has now made it to the big screen in a film directed by Marc Forster and starring Scottish actor Gerard Butler, of the action movie 300. However, during his visit to the Florida during Daytona Week, the rough as they come reverend was more intent to promote the plight of malnourished and abused children than plug his picture. He is particularly disturbed about recent developments in Sudan where a staggering 2.5 million have died during civil war spanning more than 20 years. The Sudanese president, Omar al-Bashir, is the only head of state in the world facing two international arrest warrants for war crimes. Bashir

has been accused of air attacks on civilians and the direct killing of members of ethnic groups. Rev. Childers said that with oil sanctions against Sudan and increased bombings, he was preparing to buy Army tents to house children fleeing the conflict zone. “We believe we are going to be hit very hard in South Sudan with orphaned children.” Already his Angels of East Africa charity runs orphanages in Sudan and Ethiopia while feeding about 700 children a day in Uganda. He says his ministry costs more than a million dollars a year to run, including the cost of dishing out about 3,500 meals a day. Rev. Childers was hoping the movie of his life would have done better at the box office in the US but said suffered because of poor marketing, despite getting rave reviews and a standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival. However, he hopes as more people see his story it will at least make them stop to think about the plight of children. “It’s not about children in just Africa; it’s about children around the world.” Rev. Sam Childers is also a keen biker and owns a motorcycle business called MGP Rat Bikes in Central City Pennsylvania. Sam was touring around Florida during Bike Week selling tickets for the MGP Rat that was Gerard Butler’s bike in the movie Machine Gun Preacher. To find out more about Sam Childers and possibly help champion his cause to rescue child soldiers kidnapped in Sudan go to http://www.machinegunpreacher.org.

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 61

“Second chances don’t always mean a happy ending. Sometimes, it’s just another chance to end things right.” Unknown K, so what better way to find out more about Rev. Sam Childers, than to ask him? “Why did you choose to go on a mission in Africa when we have so many lost children in America?” “Well, most of the time when people ask me that question, I always ask the people, ‘what are you doing here in America?’ Because, you know, I spend all my spare time, going around to high schools, going around to colleges, speaking about drugs and alcohol, plus I have a campground here in Pennsylvania that I work with kids who are drug abused, adults that are messed up on drugs, so it’s not like we don’t do a lot of work here in the U.S. We also have a food pantry, but what I can say, what got me to Africa, is because that was the Call that God put on me. But it’s not just Africa. Now, it’s got so big that it’s children around the world. It has nothing to do with Africa, it has nothing to do with India, and it has nothing to do with Russia, it’s children around the world. If I have an opportunity to help any child, I’m going to do it.” “Was there ever a time when you felt you were sacrificing your family’s wellbeing for your mission in Sudan and Uganda?” “I would have to say no, I don’t think I ever sacrificed my family’s wellbeing. You know, as Americans we think we have all the obligations to give to our families, to give to our children, but the only thing that we are required to give to our children is a roof over their head, electricity, a toilet, three meals a day and keep them in school, that’s all that is required. You’ve got to realize that most people when they are concerned about pleasing their children and not pleasing God, most of the time their children will grow up and not serve God. I was concerned about pleasing God, so everything I did, I did to please God, my daughter hated me as a young teenager, but when she graduated from school, she said, ‘Dad, I want to work for you.’ Now my daughter runs my non-profit, which shows you, if you please God, your children are going to follow God.” “There was a poignant moment in the movie when you were in a room with a child after you were forced to commit some pretty bad things, many people go through dark periods in their lives, what advice can you give to them to help them step out of the darkness?” “OK, are you talking about the time where it looked like I was going to commit suicide? That was Hollywood; I have never dropped so low as to want to commit suicide. I can tell you this much, I told a good Pastor friend of mine that I was going to boycott the movie if they didn’t take that out, but my friend said, ‘Sam, you need to leave it in there, because the world is like on a rampage of suicide, the spirit of suicide is everywhere so leaving that part in the movie, shows the world there is no reason whatsoever, no reason that you should ever take your life, there is nothing that could ever happen that’s so bad to take your life, so we left that part in the movie.” “Was there any resistance from the US, the Sudanese or the Ugandan governments when you decided to create an orphanage for the displaced children?” “No, I’ve never had any problem, and, you’ve got to remember that I was in South Sudan before South Sudan was even recognized as a country, so when I got there, everybody, good and bad, were known as Rebels so I was also even considered a Rebel.” “Are there Government resources available for you to continue your work, or do you have to rely on the generosity of the citizens throughout the world?” “You know, I don’t want any Government help. I don’t even want to say I rely on generosity of people around the world—I rely on God. I believe that God will move on people to give, and that’s fine, I have a few businesses that God is allowing to prosper, so

I don’t want to say I rely on people, I rely on God.” “Obviously you have the bike raffle going on at the moment, but is there a bottom line figure that a person of modest means can contribute to help you with your work?” “Absolutely!” It’s not about one person giving a lot of money, it’s about a lot of people giving a little bit of money, and then it turns out to be a lot. You know, we thank God for every $5 that people give, we thank God for every $20, every $50 every check that’s $1,000 or $5,000, it doesn’t matter how big or how small, we thank God for everything that comes in.” “We may as well give this a bit of a plug, you’ve got the bike raffle happening at the moment, $20 per ticket, let’s just talk about that for a moment.” Yes, we have the motorcycle that was specially built for the movie and the bike was built in the image of what I rode 30 years ago. It was used in the movie, ridden by Gerard Butler, and we have it now on a raffle where you can give a $20 donation or a $20 gift and your name goes into a draw that’s held on June 22, 2013. Somebody will end up winning that bike that day. It will be a hand-picked ticket, if you don’t want the bike, we’ll give you $35,000, but if you want the bike, we’ll give you the bike, we don’t pay license fees, taxes, or shipping of the bike, or taxes on the money, but like I tell everyone, everyone’s a winner because their $20 donation goes towards a new orphanage that we’re building in Ethiopia. It’s a 4-story building the first floor is a restaurant, a bakery and a hair salon. The second floor is a hotel, the third floor is all dormitory, the fourth floor is business rental, but the building is being built to be used as vocational school for the children to learn how to work in a bakery, learn how to work in a restaurant, a hotel and most of all, the ones who go to the university, we will send them to university, but if they go to university, we will open them a business on the fourth floor, and we will pay to open the business, but then we run the books until they pay the money back. The whole project of the bike raffle is all for the building that we are building in Ethiopia now.” “Now you said the bike raffle will be drawn on June 22, 2013, at ‘Thunder in the Valley’, is that right?” “Yeah, it will be done at Thunder in the Valley. The bike raffle will be done at our Motorcycle Shop that I own and run, it’s called - MGP Rat Bikes, on 7368 Lincoln Highway, Central City, Pennsylvania, two miles from Flight 93.” “Let’s say someone wants to buy a ticket, how can they buy that ticket?” “They can either call the shop on 1-800- 757- 0535 if they would like to buy a ticket, or if they like, they can go to our website, machinegunpreacher. org and they can buy the tickets online, either one.” “Fantastic, Sam. Thank you for your answers to the questions, do you have any final words that you want to say that the readers might find helpful in the light of your mission, in the work you are doing in Sudan and Ethiopia?” “I think the biggest thing out there is, don’t limit God, what He can do in your life, and don’t limit what you allow Him to do in your life. I have people say to me ‘well, I don’t know if He is real or not’ – here’s a question I ask … ‘What if you go all through this life serving God, and you get at the end of this life and you find out He’s not real, what did you lose? You lost nothing. But let’s say you go through this whole life and you don’t serve Him and you get at the end and you find out He is real, cause I know He’s real, OK. And you get at the end and you didn’t serve Him what did you lose? You lost everything.’” Listen, you can serve God and you can have fun doing it!” “Sam Childers, thank you very much for the interview.” “Thank you.”

Craven Moorehead

Once upon a time, and long, long ago I used to have a house that I lived in that was made of bricks and wood. I had to bury some wheels under it so that I could sleep and I would feel comfortable. When the economy crashed, and they took my house away I felt a little upset, but I had already put my contingency plan in place. I bought another trailer. Once trailer trash, always trailer trash. Looking back at it, I don’t miss having all the expenses that come along with owning property, and I despise the thought of being taxed for simply owning something. It seems that there is little or no freedom from the bureaucrats who continue to take and take from the people and provide little or no support to those very same folks that need representation. This, my friends, is the reason that I am Trailer Trash, and for the first time in my life I can actually enjoy being a free man in a free life. Judge me if you will, but as we all recall from last month, Spyke and Mike visited me here in the trailer park to discuss the content in his column regarding some silly rules. I hate rules, but always try to offer advice. … The Trailer Trash Court however is based upon sensibility, righteousness and the opinions and dedications of those of us whom have decided to live our life on wheels instead of concrete foundations and brick walls. Ask Spyke and Mike about that, as we had a session of TT Court last month regarding his predisposed opinions regarding women, men and in his case - BIRDS. I’m sure that Mike probably learned (just a little) from hanging out with some folks who live in

the gap between homelessness and financial security, but we all have to respect the fact that no matter your monetary wherewithal we ALL have to live together in this messed up society that we so love. If we spend all our time despising the government, the city, and our neighbors, we lose a lot of time enjoying the simple freedom we have here in the greatest country on the globe. Plus – we will miss a lot of positive drinking dwelling on the negative nuances! I, at one time had a small motorcycle shop on the lot next to my house. Although after years of living there, the robo-signer mortgage scam caused me to lose that particular piece of property, but the lot still belonged to me, and regardless of the city’s continuous attempts to eliminate my ownership through fines and harassment, the day came when I was able to sell the lot and liquidate the tools and equipment that remained there. One of those particular pieces of equipment (and the subject of this story) was a very nice pneumatic motorcycle lift. This wasn’t one of those ‘cheep-o bargain tool store’ lifts, it was one of those that you would see in your local dealership—very nice and VERY heavy. I had moved the lift to a storage warehouse near the trailer park while I attempted to sell it. One day, I was sitting in the local tavern shooting the $#!t with some friends and the topic of the motorcycle shop came up. One of my friends “Greasy” expressed an interest in having such a piece of equipment and we soon struck up a deal for him to purchase it. Greasy is an auto mechanic but an avid H-D rider and he stated the fact that he needed a

lift to do a major job on his Harley. I told him that I and my partner Rick had done a ton of bikes on that lift and that he would enjoy having it to use for his own service problems. Unfortunately Rick had some medical problems and some surgeries that prevented him from continuing with our plan of moving the shop. Rick is doing well, and our prayers are with him! He will survive but will Greasy? After the initial conversation regarding the purchase of the lift, Greasy and I went to the shop to see the item. We both decided that the thing was way too heavy to load into his truck with just the two of us plus, when I moved the lift to the shop it had locked itself into the raised position making it almost impossible to move. Knowing this we returned to the bar to recruit some help. No problem! After a few beers and a little BS we had four helpers that were dedicated to getting the lift onto Greasy’s truck. That’s when it got kinda funny. … In an expose’ of macho stupidity, I rolled the lift out of the shop onto the tarmac behind the truck. I said “The problem here is that we won’t be able to load it in the upright position” and everyone agreed that we needed to lower it all the way down to get it in the pickup. While our ‘helpers’ watched, I once again executed another feat of superman ignorance by lifting up on the table portion of the device while Greasy kept his foot on the lower part of the unit which probably wasn’t a good idea. We released the locking bar that held the unit in the upright position while I alone holding the table watched in agony as Greasy’s foot was crushed between the table and the lower unit. “I’m alright – I’m alright!” Greasy hollered as everyone else stood laughing at us, “it only got my shoe!” – Okay that’s fine but as I stood there with the weight of the lift and Greasy’s leg in my hands I had to holler out for a little help! The guys still laughing their collective asses off eventually came over to try to lift the table just a little while Greasy untied his shoe to escape. He got his foot out and there were no missing toes or blood thank God, but the shoe was still stuck. We were finally able to retrieve the shoe and our composure. Needless to say that incident was one of those “you had to be there” situations but at the time it was fairly hilarious, and has been talked about amongst us for quite a while. Back at the bar we discussed the fact that Greasy should invest in some steel toed boots, but he probably won’t. … Until next month – ‘Speed Safely’ and watch yer toes bros. ... Spyke & Mike

Hold everything my BTR friends. Last month I revealed Craven’s opinions on men’s rules towards women. Some thought they were mine or even worse Mike’s. Well they weren’t! They were the ‘King of the Trailer Trash Court.’ If you don’t know who he is flip through this issue and last month’s to feast your eyes on his reality TV world. I squawked so long and loudly at Mike after typing the story poolside that he almost threw me in. I wanted to extend on Jim Fannon’s story last month about his dog named Spot and how he saw, idolized, and reacted to his mammal counterparts. Mike gave in and I got the go ahead concerning animal rules towards you humans. I could think of no better way to let y’all hear the true thoughts of us in the animal kingdom than to get it straight from the dog’s bark. With the green light from Mike and a few more down the road, we ride the Fat Bird over to Lakeland. I get to hang out with (or is that hang on) Mojo, a Catahoula mix. He is a mascot for the Brethren of St. Francis, an animal rescue run by great people like Bill and Rob. These dudes are living angels to the canine dynasty and have devoted much of their lives to the rescue and rehabilitation of distressed animals. Bill grabs a couple of cold ones, gets a bowl of scrambled eggs (Mojo’s favorite snack), and half an apple for me. Those two sit back, relax, and chit chat while Mojo barks and I take notes. What he reveals is

common knowledge in our world but eye opening to a lot of you. I hope this raises the curtain to those human eyes that fall upon his commentary and need to see the light. 1) You never have to wait for us. We are ready to go at a moment’s notice, 24-hours a day. I screech, “That’s me! When I see Mike taking forever to get ready; I just waddle over to the scoot, climb on, and hang out.” 2) We like when you leave lots of things on the floor. The fun is playing with them and sometimes destroying them, but we always want to make you wonder what we’re thinking when doing it. One of the best known canines for this was Marley, my idol and starring dingo in the movie “Marley and Me” with Jennifer Anniston and Owen Wilson. He was a very bad dog in that way, but over the years he brought joy and happiness to his human family, especially the kids. He placed paw prints on their hearts with his demeanor and devotion. 3) We don’t notice or even care if you call us by a different name. Just keep talking ‘cause we like the attention. We understand that sometimes you have to raise your voice to get the point across. We don’t take that the wrong way. Instead, it gets us very excited. That’s why we bark and flip our tails back and forth. 4) We find it very amusing when humans are pissed off and yell at each other. We just sit and watch, ears straight up and

Win concert tickets and more weekly! Have you signed up for our Facebook yet?

our tails wagging as if laughing at you. Maybe when you bipeds are fighting, someone should just stop, sit, and listen. 5) At night we don’t wake you up and bark about silly things like: If I was to die, who would you replace me with? Where have you been all nightlong? Why were you just cheating on me in my dreams? We just curl up to you and sleep ‘till morning. We even let you have some of your covers back! 6) When you drop a silent one, we don’t run off to grab the air freshener and over spray the entire room while yelling belittling statements about you. We find the most inappropriate time to pay you back with one of our S. B. D’s (Silent But Deadly’s) and act like nothing happened while waiving our tails and giving you ‘googly eyes.’ 7) We will let you put a studded collar on us and not bitch about it, call you a pervert, or think we are your sex slave. As a matter of fact, we like to go out wearing our shiny gear, showing it off to others in the park. Unlike you weird humans who do just that in only one room of your house. 8) When you come home and I smell another dog on you, I just keep sniffing ‘cause I find it very interesting. I won’t kick you in the crotch or hit you over the head with a frying pan and yell cuss words. Also, the longer you are gone, the more excited we are to see you back! 9) If I was to ever run off and leave you, there’s no way I’m taking half your stuff. Nope, I’m just gone like a freight train. Not like a tornado or ex taking everything in its path. 10) Our parents will never come by unannounced or drop in just for a visit, only to overdue their stay or worse yet never leave. 11) Above everything, we’re all about unconditional love. On those days you humans feel the whole world is against you, we canine’s NEVER are. We will be there for you, rubbing up against you, licking you, wagging our tails, begging for attention, a scratch or treat. We try so hard to make you smile and forget. And the further you are down the more excited we are to be with you. We give it our best shot to make you believe there is a reason why ‘dog’ is God spelled backwards! An hour has passed and my bird brain is full of thoughts, my crop is full of apple, Mojo’s bowl is empty, and the cold ones are now recyclables. Mike and Bill say their goodbyes and we make like a dog and flea. Mike sits me behind the windscreen and fires up the Fat Bird, getting my wings in the wind and its wheels down the road. Happy Father’s Day!

Christian Motorcyclists Association

Summer is back, and it’s a great time to be alive to enjoy the awesome riding weather that this time of year brings. One of the best ways I know to enjoy life is to climb onto my bike, fire it up, and head into the wind without a care or concern in the world. To hear that steady rumble below me, to feel the responsiveness when I twist the throttle, and to feel the wind blowing through my hair is just an awesome experience! Rode over to a bike show with some

friends and really enjoyed the time with them, as well as checking out all the vendors and the offerings they had. I have been working on getting the bike looking good, as well as making it more visible to the cagers. My motto is that you can never have too many lights, so once again I found myself perusing the choices available. I already have a modulating headlight, and even that didn’t stop a guy in his car from pulling out in front of me, across three lanes of traffic, in Daytona. There are also extra lights on the Tour Pak. The rear turn signals are now red brake lights, and the main tail light will blind you with the flashers built into it. During this event, I found myself looking at some halogen spots to put up front on the crash bars, which would make a total of five lights aiming forward. It is clear to me that we can’t always prevent accidents from happening. We all know too many good friends that were good riders but got hit anyway. If we ride a bike and want to enjoy a long life, we need to be careful and take any steps possible to prevent those

accidents. That old saying, “Live to Ride, Ride to Live” can be interpreted and understood two different ways. When up on two, or three, we have no guarantee that we will survive the potential dangers. It is my belief that if we do our best to protect ourselves, to be seen by those on the road with us, we have a better chance to have the wind in our face for many years to come. There is a way we can be guaranteed life, not on this earth but in the eternal view, and that is through Jesus Christ. He said, in John 6:47, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.” This promise means that when it comes to making us an eternal home in heaven, Jesus has already paid the price. Here we have a promise, from Jesus Himself, that He will give us an eternity in Heaven, if we just believe in Him. We don’t have to buy fancy flashing lights for our bikes for an eternal salvation because Jesus IS the light! Is He the light of your life? He’s there for you! In the Wind, Denny Dingler
