THE BASIC LEFT-TURNER

Approaching a busy four-way intersection there are a lot of elements to monitor: cross traffic may or may not stop for the light; pedestrians could step out at any time; an oncoming car waiting to turn left could fail to detect your presence and turn left in front of you. Sure enough, just as you approach the intersection, the car in the opposing left-turn lane swings into your path. You brake hard and swerve at the last second, barely avoiding a broadside collision. Strategy: Without a doubt, this scenario is a frequent hazard for motorcyclists riding in urban areas. A common type of motorcycle crash (for sober riders) occurs during daylight hours, at low speeds (around 30 mph), when an oncoming vehicle turns left into your path. Again, when approaching an intersection with a vehicle waiting in the left-turn lane, your best bet is to assume the worst: that a car will pull out in front of you. Reduce your speed as you approach the intersection, either downshifting or lightly applying the front brake. Adjust your position in the lane to be seen better. Slowing will increase your safety cushion: slowing just 10 mph reduces your stopping distance significantly, and covering your brake greatly reduces reaction time. After you’ve slowed, continue to visually monitor the car in case it moves and forces you to change position or stop quickly. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

A Family Tradition Dedicated to Motorcycles

Phil was born on February 24, 1924 in that bastion of football, Green Bay, Wisconsin. His family were cherry farmers since the late 1800s on land awarded to his grandfather in recognition of his service in the Civil War under General Philip Sheridan. In tribute to General Sheridan, the grandfather named a son Philip Sheridan Peterson, Phil’s father. Phil is proud not only be named for his father, but also of the history associated with his name. During WW II, like may of his fellow countrymen, Phil answered the “call to arms” and joined the Navy. He served in the Pacific aboard the destroyer, USS Bearss, which was a member of the escort fleet for the signing of the treaty that ended the war. Phil is understandably proud of this time and remains close to several of his “comrades in arms” to this day. 21 and back from the war, Phil did what he long dreamed of.. he bought a HarleyDavidson® motorcycle! His first Harley® bike was a 1946 WL Harley 45cu (750) that he BTR 10 | BORNTORIDE.COM

purchased for $425, money he saved up while in the Navy. Not long afterwards, he married Charlie and began farming. Together they have raised six children. Phil had this “passion” for motorcycles and in 1947 he started a motorcycle club. Charlie designed and stitched the club logo. They had meetings and went for rides, sort of an early HOG group. In 1950, at the age of 26, Phil (now with 2 children) could no longer contain his desire to race. Charlie, ever his biggest supporter, agreed that he could try his hand at racing for one year to see where it might lead. Well, that year he won the Minnesota Novice Championship! Phil continued to race, but still kept farming. Name the type of racing and Phil competed: Short Track, Road Race, Hill Climb, TT (Tourist Trophy), Ice Racing, Motorcross, and Drag Racing. He rode on the “Hot Shoe Circuit” for four years and continued racing locally until 1967. During this time he and Charlie became friends with

Walter C. Davidson of Harley-Davidson. In 1953, Walter approached Phil about becoming a Harley-Davidson dealer. At first Phil thought that Walter was joking, but he soon realized that he was serious. Even back then Phil loved Florida. He spent a lot of time racing in Florida and had built up a following. Florida? Why Florida? All Harley could offer, responded Walter, was a little, Navy town way, way south... Key West! The Navy, Harley, and Florida was more than he could resist. So he leased the farm and packed up Charlie and the family (now 4 children) down to Key West. His dealership soon became a hangout for the young men serving in the Navy. Phil, at the ripe “old” age of 30, had become sort of a “Father figure”. Racing was still in his blood and he was sponsored by fellow HarleyDavidson dealer, Billy Temple, up in Miami a relationship that would lead Phil to where he is today. Change was in the air, Charlie now expecting Drew, missed Wisconsin. So

Peterson’s Harley-Davidson, family owned and operated since 1954 - www.PetersonsHarley.com

Phil packed up family and returned to the farm. But...he had this agreement with Billy Temple...Phil could buy the Harley-Davidson of Miami dealership when Billy decided to retire. On July 4, 1965 - Billy Temple calls Phil - true to his word: “I’m retiring, are you sure you still want this place? After all, you have a wife and six kids?”... Say no more! Phil got a mortgage and it was back to Florida - Miami this time. Billy turns over the keys, leaves some petty cash in the register and Phil Peterson’s Harley-Davidson of Miami is born. Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run started some 43 years ago as just an idea to drum up some business during a normally slow time of year for his motorcycle business in Miami and Key West. Phil thought if he had a Poker Run to Key West In August and made an event of It, that would do the trick. Phil and a handful of local motorcycle riders, mostly from the Mustang Motorcycle Club decided to try it. The Run started early Saturday morning with sign up at the Miami Store, a ride to Key West hitting five restaurants or bars to draw a card and arriving In Key West in time to

get cleaned up for the Awards Dinner, Dance and Bike Show. The best hands would win prizes and as an added attraction they had a Best Dressed Contest (where riders and their passengers would wear matching boots, pants and shirts with their helmets painted to match their bikes) so not only was the bike judged but also the riders were judged for the best looking couple and they were awarded trophies. On Sunday morning they would have a Field Meet showing off their rider skills and scored for different events i.e. slow race, roll a barrel with your front tire,

The road has always been a place to find the answers, or ignore the questions.

ride over the teeter-totter plank etc. Competing for trophies) In those days there were small well organized riding clubs with a lot of camaraderie and friendly competition between clubs. Everyone would return home on Sunday afternoon and this went on for many years in the early days of the Poker Run. Today the Poker Run has grown into a major event with police estimates of ten to fifteen thousand riders. In the recent years it has managed to sell out all of the Key West Hotels with more and more riders staying on nearby Islands

and traveling into Key West for the day or party that they want to attend. Drew Peterson, Phil’s son, now manages and promotes the Poker run and believes another way that we can grow this event is to make it a Key’s Bike Week with a Key West Poker Run. So this year the plan is to have motorcycle rides, events and attractions throughout the Upper and Middle Keys to attract riders to come and stay for the Week and Island hop. There are thousands of hotel rooms and places to stay throughout the upper and middle keys.

“Motorcycle Riders are always Welcome to the Island” Craig Cates-Key West Mayor

The Idea is to ride down and ride all over the Keys for the first three or four days and enjoy many of the things you can do like, snorkeling or dive trips, fishing and fishing trips, kayaking. jet skiing, para-sailing and of course enjoying Paradise while eating, drinking and shopping. Then there is the Poker Run which will start on Thursday September 17th-Sunday 20th 2015. Then there’s the Poker Run Winner Takes All, a NEW Harley-Davidson 500 Street “or $6000 Cash.” Sign Up NOW online at www.PetersonsHarley.com or after Sept 1st at either Peterson’s Locatons. Note: This is Finz Finds Alternative Route to get to Key West Living in Key Largo for six years, I have learned all the great local places to eat, and all the little back roads off US-1. You can head straight down US-1 the whole way, and get to your destination just fine, but you will miss some of the side adventures the Keys have to offer. To start with, I highly recommend riding Card Sound Rd (and bridge) instead of taking what locals call the stretch (US-1). If you take the stretch, you will have cars constantly trying to pass you, and you will not get that laid back feeling heading down the road. When you take Card Sound, it is the road less traveled. You might even see some Florida crocodiles along the way. Yes crocodiles, not alligators. There are also a couple of local eateries at the foot of Card Sound bridge. Ala-

bama Jacks is one of them, and has been there forever. Key Largo is my favorite key, but I am partial to it because I lived there. It is the home of the Caribbean Club, a great biker hangout, and was featured in the movie Key Largo with Humphrey Bogart. The list of great Restaurants is too long to mention, but I recommend getting a bite at one of them like The Fish House (mm102), The Pilot House (mm 99.5), Mrs Macs Kitchen (mm 99.5) or Snappers (mm 94.5). If you want to swim with Dolphins, you can book a session at Dolphins Cove, Dolphins Plus, Theater Of The Sea, or Grassy Key Dolphin Research Center. When you get to Big Pine Key, take one of the side roads in my route, find a place to stop and turn off you engines. If you are lucky, you

might have Key Deer come up to you looking for a hand out. These deer are about the size of a small dog, and are used to people in this area. You wont find a ride that is as open air as the one down the Keys. The ocean on one side, and the bay on the other, along with all the long scenic bridges you will cross, makes riding the Keys one of my favorite. By the way, locals refer to points of interest either being located ocean side, or bayside, and everything is referenced by mile markers (mm), not addresses. Time is a little slower, and your life will be a little less stressful on this journey, so take it all in and enjoy the ride. Steve Finz

ABATE of Florida, Inc. is looking for families who have lost a family member or friend in a motorcycle crash that was the fault of another vehicle. The majority of people who kill or seriously injure a motorcyclist get a failure to yield, running a red light, or some other minor traffic citation. It is time for the voices of those that have suffered this terrible loss to be heard up in Tallahassee. It is time to address this problem before more loved ones are lost. ABATE of Florida, Inc. is Florida’s largest Motorcycle Rights Organization. We have Chapters across the State of Florida made up of men and women who love riding and want to promote motorcycle safety and motorcycle awareness to the general public. ABATE of Florida, Inc. is contacted many times each year by people who have suffered a loss and feel a great injustice was done when the driver of the other vehicle only gets a small ticket. A recent example, we were contacted by a mother who lost her 21-year-old daughter while riding home one evening. Her daughter was wearing a full face helmet, armored riding jacket, and gear. The person who killed her turned left, running a red light, crossing several lanes of traffic before killing her daughter. The person was only given a ticket for running a red light. We are not just talking about motorcycles. We need to protect all the vulnerable road users BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM

on Florida roadways. Bicyclist, pedestrians, road construction workers, and all the others who have a legal right to travel on or near roadways. If you know someone who has been killed or seriously injured as a result of another vehicle driver’s negligence, please contact ABATE of Florida, Inc. and tell us your story. Sometimes the legislative / legal system needs a reminder that there is a problem. We are asking for your help to put a face and a story to the cold statistics. Your story can help to change the law to help protect other vulnerable road users so that more families do not have to suffer a needless loss. If you would like to share your story and help us show the legislators that the vulnerable road users need help, contact ABATE of Florida, Inc. at this email address statelegislative@ abateflorida.com In addition to fighting for motorcyclists rights, we also strive to educate the general public about motorcycle safety awareness. To help expand the safety and education aspect we have created ABATE of Florida Safety and Education, Inc. This is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation whose sole purpose is to educate the public about motorcycle safety awareness to help reduce the deaths on the roadways. You can help support motorcycle safety

awareness by attending the Avon Park Autumn Bike Fest October 2 – October 4 in Avon Park, Florida. Avon Park has graciously provided their beautiful historic downtown area for the Autumn Bike Fest. The highlight of the event will be the Bobby Friss Band as they rock out Saturday, October 3 from 6 PM to 9 PM. The Bobby Friss Band is famous for playing big biker events. There will be a variety of biker and family activities, good food and drink, 50/50 drawings throughout the event, vendors, and even a poker run just to name a few of the things we have planned. There will be primitive camping at the Moose Lodge for $10 a night with food, bar, showers and entertainment on the premises. Avon Park is perfectly located in central Florida on U.S. Highway 27. It is just 75 miles south of Orlando and 55 miles northwest of Lake Okeechobee. Many hotels are scattered up and down U.S. 27 within easy riding from Avon Park. Come out and support motorcycle safety awareness while having a great time with your friends. This is a great way to save lives, promote motorcycle safety, and just have a blast. Be part of a solution, help save the life of a fellow biker. After all we have lost too many brothers and sisters to careless cagers.

TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER THAN WE ARE APART Independence Day—there is no better place to celebrate our independence than at the races, especially at the Daytona International Speedway. Ronnie Galletti and I were invited to be the guests of Johnny Morris and his JD Motorsports Team. Johnny has been in NASCAR for over two decades. His success has allowed him the luxury of running three cars in the Xfinity Series, the #0, #01 and #4 Chevrolet Camaros. There is never a dull moment when at the races and especially where NASCAR was born—Daytona Beach, FL. We were able to join the team during their pre-race activities, listening to strategy sessions and learning more about these hot rods. NASCAR is known as one of the most valuable “marketing machine” in existence. Someone described each NASCAR weekend BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM

as a Super Bowl-sized event when it comes to the coordinated efforts and production of the World’s Greatest American Sport. Onboard as sponsors for this race were Flex Seal and Flex Shot. Of course the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches STAR was on the cars! Johnny Morris and team are proud supporters of the Youth Ranches. Each race they do what they can to raise awareness for the mission toward caring for abused, neglected, and at-risk children. The Race to Give initiative of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is sponsored by JD Motorsports. It is where select drivers, teams and tracks use their influence and personalities to help increase the exposure for the cause. What is better than connecting the best marketing machine and the “best children’s charity” together for the benefit of the children being

served and the communities they represent? It was an exciting night for the JD Motorsports Drivers, Harrison Rhodes (#0), Landon Cassill (#01) and Ross Chastain (#4). With none of the major pile-ups affecting the JDM Team, two Top 10 finishes resulted. Ronnie and I sat back and took in all that Daytona had to offer. Daytona Rising was the theme with the track grandstands under major remodel. Watching the race from the grandstands was spectacular, but sitting in the pits, smelling the aroma of racing—fuel and rubber … it gets no better than that. We want to thank Johnny for treating us like family and for embracing the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches alongside Born To Ride motorcycle media. Together we are stronger than we are apart. See you at the races.

The original Suzuki GSX-R750 was designed as a street-legal bike that was born on the circuit. The 2015 Suzuki GSX-S750 gives that championship-winning heritage even more street- smart performance. Blending just the right mix of modern sportbike performance with futuristic street bike style, this 750 is purpose-built for excitement. Suzuki took the powerful 749cc fourcylinder fuel-injected sportbike engine from the GSX-R750, and tuned it to deliver the perfect power curve for street riding. The engine’s cam profiles have been revised, and the intake and exhaust tracts have been reshaped to boost low-end torque and mid-range power. This gives the 750 unmatched throttle response and intense acceleration. Suzuki dualthrottle valve fuel injection means the performance is crisp and consistent.

ENGINE Engine: 749 cc, 4-stroke, liquid-cooled, 4-cylinder, DOHC Bore x Stroke: (2.83 in) x (1.81 in) Compression Ratio: 12.3: 1 Fuel System: Suzuki Fuel Injection Starter:

They are poor, rich, educated, uneducated, young, old etc. … Lady riders have one major thing in common and that is that they discovered the freedom of riding: The freedom of taking control and riding their own motorcycle. Meet Rita, the marketing director of the South Florida Fair in West Palm Beach, Florida. Rita is a professional; she holds a very important and busy position where she constantly has to be on top of her game. As the marketing director, Rita is constantly meeting people—negotiating, networking, and preparing for all the events that take place throughout the year at the fairgrounds. What made Rita decide to ride her own bike instead of being a passenger? Several reasons she replied. Rita explained that she would ride as a passenger with her fiancée. They would ride with a very nice group but it was very uncomfortable on her bottom. She would also have events at the fair and see lady riders enjoying themselves and thought it was the coolest thing. One day she decided to get her own bike and the rest is history. DON’T LET OTHERS DISCOURAGE YOU Rita said: “When you decide to ride people will talk. Some support you, some don’t BTR 40 | BORNTORIDE.COM

and that’s fine because you only need your own self approval.” Rita’s daughter thinks she is having a midlife crises. I had to laugh when Rita told me that because my son and daughter thought the same about me. Rita continued, “Others encourage and admire you. Many secretly are wishing to do the same thing, but they don’t dare either because of fear of what others will say or they doubt they can do it. I never let it bother me.” LIVING THE EQ LIFESTYLE During our interview, Rita explained how she feels she is living the EQ LifeStyle. Rita explained that there have been many first time experiences for her. She learned that you have to get in the water and take the challenge. “Once you do it you realize it was so easy, it was nothing. One of the things the EQ LifeStyle encourages is not to let fear rob you from living.” Every time you step out of your comfort zone you become so much stronger. Rita gets it. I remember a small example of one of my many experiences. It occurred the first day I rode my bike all alone. I left my home to go meet some friends to ride. It went well. I was nervous but nothing major. I just prayed (a couple of hundred times!). I arrived

and met up with everyone so all is just great. Well, on the way back, everyone starts exiting at different places from the highway. I was the last to exit so I was left alone. No problem right? Well all good except it was a Friday, 5:30 PM rush hour on I-95 West Palm Beach! I could have pulled over and called for help. Not a chance, I kept going. I had my big girl panties on and knew that if others can do it so could I. There aren’t words to describe the feeling of accomplishment when I reached home. The self confidence soars. You realize you are the only person holding you back and you can do it! Once you do it, it is so liberating. Rita said it perfectly in our interview, “There is no accomplishment without risk. Recognize your excuses (I don’t have time, I don’t know how, etc.). You are your own worst enemy. You have no limitations.” RITA’S ADVICE FOR WOMEN: “Stop thinking about getting a bike and go try as many bikes until you find the perfect fit. Do your endorsement course and find a mentor to get you started. Be open to learn because no one is born knowing everything.” The EQ LifeStyle is a sign that you are about to experience an adventure called life like you never knew before! -- Hayley Colina The followers of the EQ LifeStyle identify and support other followers. What would your life be like if your grandfather was one of the four founders and first president of Harley-Davidson? I had the opportunity to ask that question – and others – with Jean Davidson, granddaughter of Walter Davidson! Jean is the daughter of Gordon Davidson. Gordon’s dad was Walter Davidson. The history of this family is rich, eclectic, and totally awe-inspiring. When I asked Jean what the most memorable thing she could think of growing up, she said, “Riding behind my dad on the motorcycle. Dad had a Harley with a side car. When mom and my sister wanted to ride, I got to ride behind my dad. I was very close to my dad.” Jean began riding a Harley at the age of 12. She also was the owner of the largest Harley-Davidson dealership in Wisconsin. “We bought the dealership in 1967 and opened it up to the public in 1968. At that point in time what was considered large isn’t large anymore. In 1979 I divorced my husband and gave him the dealership.” Jean remembers vividly the different times in her young life when there would be well-known Harley racers in the kitchen just sitting around the table talking and visiting. “I remember just looking at these handsome racers. It was so neat looking back at times like that and having the opportunity to be in the same room with these guys!” For those of you reading this article, you may know of a well-known Harley dealer from Daytona Beach named Joe Robison. “I grew up with Joe. When I’ve been to Daytona, I always made it a point to go and visit Joe and his wife Angie.” Jean is the proud mother of five children and seven grandchildren. “My children still ride today. Motorcycles that have been in the family over the years are still road worthy today. During Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary Parade, our 1935 knucklehead was a part of the parade. Those bikes are just beautiful works of art.” Due to hip replacement surgery, Jean prefers to be a passenger when out at various events and rallies. “I love to ride as a passenger!” While interviewing Jean for this article, I noticed that she was an excellent story teller when she was talking about certain events in her life. “I’ve always been a teacher and a writer. I wrote the school curriculum and was even asked to write the state school curriculum.” Jean took those two attributes and with the passion and knowledge of her family history, started writing books. Two well-known books are “Growing up Harley Davidson – Memoirs of

a Motorcycle Dynasty” and “Jean Davidson’s Harley-Davidson Family Album.” The first book is the personal story of the history of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The second book is 100 years of the world’s greatest motorcycles in photographs. “It took five years to write the first book. I wanted to find all unknown stories no one had heard before. After the first book came out, the publisher wanted a second book!” Jean didn’t stop there. She has even written children’s books! “Riding Back in Time – On My Daddy’s Harley-Davidson,” “My Daddy Makes the Best Motorcycle in the Whole Wide World,” “Color Me Harley-Let’s Go For a Ride!” and, “Fun and Games with HarleyDavidson.” There was a huge turning event in Jean’s life. Jean lost her four-year old grandson, Ryder. “One day he was playing with the neighbor boys. One was Ryder’s age, and the other was eight years old. They were playing near a ditch filled with water. Ryder and the other four year old boy fell into this water-filled ditch. The eight year old boy didn’t yell. He got scared and ran home. If he would have yelled, Ryder’s dad could have saved both the little boys because he would have heard the yell.” Jean turned this tragic event into a viable charity called, the Davidson Yell and Tell Foundation. “This is a charitable foundation set up to teach young children what to do when they observe a dangerous situation. Many times this child will run away or be quiet because he/she doesn’t want to get into trouble or be called a tattletale. Sometimes the child is so afraid, he/she is too scared to do anything. The Yell and Tell program teaches children how to take action and be a hero.” Some of the most dangerous situations that this program covers are: Pools, Rivers/Lakes, Fire, Poison, Guns, and Child Enticement. Currently, Jean has reached over 30,000 children with this program; 32 children have used it to save someone. This program is also tied in with Harley-Davidson. Jean goes into schools discussing this life-saving program as well as participates in local motorcycle rides. “Money that is raised on the motorcycle awareness rides stays in the community where the ride is taking place.” Jean has even been in Florida speaking in Lakeland, St. Pete, Brandon, and Bradenton about Yell and Tell. I was very happy to have been able to talk with Jean Davidson. She is a formidable person and one that has a vision and purpose in life. I’m glad that I could bring Jean Davidson to the faithful readers of Born To Ride! Thank you, Jean! www.jeandavidson.com

Biker Movie Review

Biker “Exploitation” is a term coined by producers, actors, and ultimately YOU the viewer. Not all biker films are actually geared at the (exploitation) or in other words, the “bad” angle of the biker lifestyle. Some of these actually “miss the target” and simply feature the motorcycle as secondary component to the plot. However, in literally every film involving bikers or the biker ‘lifestyle’, one thing you, as a viewer can count on is the presence of the Police. Electra Glide in Blue has the unique twist of actually using story of a motorcycle cop as the baseline. In this film, Blake plays a motor officer named John Wintergreen. His character is not really into being a ‘traffic cop’ as he has aspired to become a homicide detective. In my opinion, if you had to be a cop, what better job than cruising around on your departmentally funded Harley? But hey, this review isn’t about me, it’s about the film!! Back to the chase, and no code-4! John Wintergreen patrols the rural Arizona highways with his partner “Zipper.” Wintergreen is laid-back but upright about enforcing the law, while Zipper is predominately lazy. Zipper likes busting Hippies (remember them?) even going so far as to plant evidence on a young ‘hippie’ during a search of his van. Wintergreen again proves to be the polar opposite of his partner Zipper, as he continuously states how much he hates riding his motorcycle, and Zipper’s only real dream is to own his own motorcycle. Zip spends a lot of time reading comic books, and eating junk food while John takes his job seriously. One of the things about Wintergreen that is out of place in this film is (in one scene) he is firing his pistol at an “Easy Rider” poster in the police

firing range… It gets worse! Crazy Willie, an older local – perhaps homeless- person comes in contact with John and Zip near an old shack in the desert. They almost playfully chase Willie on their bikes and finally capture him. He tells John about his friend Frank who had committed suicide in the shack. John goes to the shack and discovers the body and believes the case is not a suicide, but a murder. The coroner later arrives and disagrees with John who was feverishly taking notes. After a shouting match with the coroner, in walks Detective Harve Poole, who admires Wintergreen’s savvy, and arranges for Wintergreen to be transferred to homicide as his ‘driver’ to help with the case. Harve and John return to the shack and find a large statue of Jesus, which is full of “Reds” and as the investigation continues, John and Harve interrogate a group of hippies, looking for a drug dealer named Bob Zemko. The theme of good cop – bad cop comes into play as Harve roughs some of the hippies up after John had nicely questioned them. John’s initial joy at being promoted is short-lived, as his relationship with Harve deteriorates after he finds out that John has been sleeping with ‘Jolene” (Harve’s girlfriend) and the waitress at the local bar. But when Jolene mocks Harve’s sexual prowess (implying that Harve is impotent) and brags that Wintergreen can “go three times in one morning” things just go downhill for our hero and he is demoted back to traffic. After a wild motorcycle and car chase the pair capture and question Zemko. More good cop - bad cop scenes cause Wintergreen to eventually realize that Crazy Willie committed the murder; the victim was an old friend of his who had taken to selling the drugs and hanging around with a younger crowd. Jealous, Willie had murdered his friend and arranged it so it appeared to be a suicide. As usual there is some stolen money, and the search for this money is when Wintergreen discovers another terrible fact: Zipper’s dream was to own his own motorcycle, and had stolen the dead man’s drug money (initially blamed on Zemko) to pay for it. At Zippers trailer in the desert, the movie’s theme is uncovered when zipper shows John the “Electra Glide in Blue” sitting in the yard. Later, Zipper is drunk and begins firing his gun at Wintergreen, missing him but striking a random passer-by. Wintergreen then shoots Zipper in self-defense, and Zipper dies in his arms. Back in the desert on patrol, Wintergreen spots the same van that was featured earlier in the film, and he pulls it over. He recognizes one of the hippies as the very same one that Zip had planted the drugs on in the beginning of the film, and decides to let them go. They take off down the highway, but Wintergreen realizes that he still has the hippie’s Driver license in his hand. As he tries once again to pull the van over to return the license, the passenger opens the rear window and fires a shotgun killing Wintergreen. It’s a very sad ending to a really weird flick! For me, this is where the whole deal goes bad. The movie is loaded with plagiarism of the iconic film “Easy Rider.” Yeah, I believe that “Electra Glide in Blue” truly is a ‘cult-classic’ sort of piece, but the constant blasts from Easy Rider kinda turned me off. THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT

August is the hottest month of the year, and if you live in Florida you have to come up with creative ways to ‘beat the heat.’ We are all very familiar with one way: Blasting down the highway with the throttle wide open, with the simple expectation of being drenched by the mandatory afternoon thunderstorm that we must all endure if we expect to survive this locale. Once we enter the ‘wash cycle’ there is always the cooling ‘dry cycle’ that allows us to eliminate the necessity to actually wash our clothes or take a shower. The only thing that we must avoid is the ‘spin cycle’ that often comes with the wet highways and ignorant motorists who seem to lose their minds when it rains. I failed to elaborate on the damage that can come with the nasty road-wash that seems to stick to everything that is chrome plated on the motorcycle, but we can discuss more on hygienic maintenance at a later date. As long as we as humans are clean, I guess it’s okay. But what about when we can’t be going a hundred miles an hour down the highway and we have to do some kind of work in a hot-ass warehouse, garage, or other similar enclosure? Thomas A. Edison said, “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” In my life, whether I have a good imagination or not—the necessity has become the mother of invention, and the pile of junk, well the junk pile is a given! I had an idea, plenty of necessity, and the junk pile itself delivered something interesting. A true portable redneck Air Conditioning unit that actually works! Using an old squirrel cage blower from an antique electronic rack and an empty cat litter container, I was able to fashion a pretty ‘cool’

device that actually works and keeps me cooler than average out in the hot-ass shop! Made completely from recycled junk, this air conditioner is not harmful to the environment and will last for years! Using smelly ice made from well water, this device actually keeps my fat ass at least 10 degrees cooler in the sweltering heat, plus the condensate water that collects in the bottom of the bucket can be used to water your weed plants or grass. Whatever you have growing in your trailer park will benefit from the excess water left behind in this unique unit! It’s Eco-friendly and the hinged lid automatically closes when the AC is turned off. If you don’t want to deal with the excess condensate water left behind by recycled grocery bags, simply fill and freeze bottled water containers and place them in the bucket instead. Either way, building a device like this doesn’t take too long and since its portable you can use it pretty much anywhere inside or out of your trailer, shop or wherever you feel the need for cool air. I think this may actually be a better invention than the day that I combined an old bicycle with a reel mower to make a redneck riding lawn mower!

Dammit man, that was a long time ago, but at least it got me a good dinner and some drinks and some fun! Remember people, the “Good ole Days” are today and although time goes on forever, just do something positive with your junk pile and make someone smile at your redneck stupidity! Until next month, speed safely and stay cool.… Craven

Spyke & Mike

“DUDE, COME GET YER SCOOT”

Let me fill y’all in on whatssup with our ride, my BTR friends. Mike gets the call from Craven that all proud bike owners like to hear. “Dude, come get yer scoot. She’s as good as new and don’t forget my cash.” Mike and I catch a lift across the bay with a close friend of ours, Deanna. She tools around on her own Fat Boy, so Mike has to ride bitch and I must hang on bitch, bitch. It’s been a long time since I’ve rode with Mike while he’s not been in control of the scoot. She won’t let my talons touch her chrome and paint like I do on the Fat Bird, so I had to resort to my old fashioned way of cruising; clinging onto Mike’s shoulder with my nails and gripping his glasses with my beak, when the crosswinds get rough. … We arrive at the shop and Deanna states, “I’ll pass on giving you two a lift anytime in the near future. Between the wakos with cell phones taking pictures and the nonbelievers who just had to drive beside us and stare while trying to stay in their lane, I almost crapped my pants five times! I just don’t see how you can ride safely around here and not end up with stained underwear.” Mike blurts out, “Most of the time I see ‘em coming so I speed up or slow down. But when I can’t get away I lift my vest, show ‘em I’m packing heat, and give ‘em that look like I’m gonna use it. It works 99% of the time.” Deanna questions, “Only 99%?” I squawk loudly, “It’s that 1% we don’t mess with. They show us their weapon and Mike immediately pulls off the road, letting them go on their own wacky way.” We walk into the shop and there sits the Fat Bird, waiting for us. It’s just begging me to perch behind the windscreen and for Mike to jump onto the saddle. Craven yells out, “You three come on into the A/C, grab a cold one, and cool down for a while. I’ve just gotta tell

y’all the story about fixing yer scoot.” “It all starts with the primary cases. Both were wasted from whatever you couldn’t miss on the road. It pushed the clutch basket widget up into the doo hickey, which in turn tore out the thing a ma bob. Without any fluid left and you running her as dry as a popcorn fart, it totally fried the chain and sprocket gizmos. Thus taking out the master flopper leader and bill a bonger.” “But the humdinger of it all is that no beer was spilled in the tear down and reassembly of that whole mishmash. And believe or not, I only ended up with a small box of extra nuts and bolts. Do you want ‘em?” Deanna is shaking her head, I’m shaking my wings, and Mike is shaking in his boots. He tilts his head as he looks at Craven and bellows, “dude! Are you for real?” Craven chugs the rest of his cold one, smiles, and laughs “gotcha buddy! I’m just messing with ya! All is good but I do have to confess one thing. There was alcohol abuse once in the process and it wasn’t my fault. The dancer girl was doing a beautiful dismount from your scoot and stepped right on top of a tall boy. Poor thing cut her baby toe. But I thought fast and came to the rescue. I had to suck. …” Deanna screams out, “Hey, hey, hey! There is a female present who really doesn’t want to hear about the Moorehead first aid techniques.” He holds up his hands and says, “The only first aid that was attempted was me using a straw to try and suck out the rest of the beer from the crushed can. Geeze woman, can’t you give this quick thinking redneck a break once in a while.” Deanna rolls her eyes and speaks, “Alright, I will this time, but when I read Spyke’s and your article every month, I get so wrapped up in them that I feel as if I’m really there, caught up in the sit-com. It’s so real that at times I have to stop halfway through, look up, and make sure I’m still on my couch. Like always, you had me going, living in the evermore known as the BTR lifestyle. After this close encounter, I’m in need of some saddle time and fresh air. You two can make like neckties and hang around if you want but, I’m outta here!” Mike slams a wad money down on the table, finishes his cold one, and belches out, “We’re making like the Fat Birds’ tire and hitting the road, riding with you Deanna.” Mike picks me up and we head out the door with Craven yelling in the background, “Hey birdbrain, make sure yer daddy pulls into the first gas station ya see ‘cause y’all be walkin’ or pushin’ to the next one and I ain’t answerin’ the phone when he calls for a gas can and a ride!” With that said Mike plops me behind the windscreen and gives Craven the finger. He fires up the Fat Bird, gets my wings in the wind and its wheels down the road. Riding just behind our good friend, Deanna. SPYKE
