THE BASIC LEFT-TURNER

Approaching a busy four-way intersection there are a lot of elements to monitor: cross traffic may or may not stop for the light; pedestrians could step out at any time; an oncoming car waiting to turn left could fail to detect your presence and turn left in front of you. Sure enough, just as you approach the intersection, the car in the opposing left-turn lane swings into your path. You brake hard and swerve at the last second, barely avoiding a broadside collision. Strategy: Without a doubt, this scenario is a frequent hazard for motorcyclists riding in urban areas. A common type of motorcycle crash (for sober riders) occurs during daylight hours, at low speeds (around 30 mph), when an oncoming vehicle turns left into your path. Again, when approaching an intersection with a vehicle waiting in the left-turn lane, your best bet is to assume the worst: that a car will pull out in front of you. Reduce your speed as you approach the intersection, either downshifting or lightly applying the front brake. Adjust your position in the lane to be seen better. Slowing will increase your safety cushion: slowing just 10 mph reduces your stopping distance significantly, and covering your brake greatly reduces reaction time. After you’ve slowed, continue to visually monitor the car in case it moves and forces you to change position or stop quickly. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

RETIRED AIR FORCE MEDIC SURPRISED WITH GIFT OF NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE

San Antonio (September 20, 2017): Today at Cowboy’s Alamo City HarleyDavidson in San Antonio, retired Air Force medic, Lisa Benjamin, was honored with a Harley-Davidson Model Year 2018 Street Glide Special powered by the new Milwaukee Eight Engine. The surprise moment was part of MISSION: “THANK YOU” – a cross-country tour led by Adam Sandoval to celebrate the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom. Lisa Benjamin enlisted after the 9/11 attacks and served as an Aeromedical Evacuation Medic in the Air Force. She was deployed in Iraq in 2003 – before she was even truly eligible to deploy she was sent as a replacement for an injured crew member where after only six months of training she stepped up and excelled. Serving more than eight years, she deployed to Iraq, Germany and flew rescue missions when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Every American can nominate a military member - past or present - who has dedicated their life to protecting our freedom by submitting their story of sacrifice, strength and courage of service at MissionThankYou. com. A panel consisting of Adam Sandoval, BTR 8 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Wounded Warrior Project representatives and Harley-Davidson leadership will select which seven other deserving military members will be honored with new motorcycles. THE MEN “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die.” -Gilbert K. Chesterton

Leave behind the superficial selfie culture of today and take a photographic journey with Jim Flash Miteff, back to his 1960 s America; a time when people were real, emotions were raw, and life was lived on the edge. Prepare for a wild ride down the highway of history and into the rowdy and radical world of Bikers the legendary men, machines and myths of Miteff s generation. Not your typical “girl next door”, Beverly Roberts, the daughter of Outlaw biker Jim “Flash 1%er” Miteff, was riding on motorcycles before she could walk. When Beverly was as young as eight years old, while helping develop the pictures her father took of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, she dreamed one day these photos would be shared with the world. Now, more than 40 years later she has published a handpicked selection of her father’s photographs. BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Portraits of American Bikers: Life in the 1960s is the first in the series of three books that make up the collection. Portraits of American Bikers: Inside Looking Out (the second book in the series) will be released in April of 2010. All three books in the Outlaws MC series are published by Flash Productions, LLC. The Outlaws Motorcycle Club began in McCook, Illinois USA in 1935 and is currently one of the largest motorcycle clubs in the world with chapters all over the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Asia. A retired stockbroker, Beverly owns the publishing company named after her late father. “It is my hope that in a sea of misinformation about bikers and their way of life, my father’s images will offer a glimpse of truth for those who seek it.” -Beverly V. THE MACHINES “A Motorcycle is a bicycle with a pandemonium attachment, and is designed for the special use of mechanical geniuses, daredevils and lunatics.” -George Fitch, Atlanta Constitution, 1916

THE MYTHS “Myth is the hidden part of every story., the buried part, the region that is still unexplored because there are as yet no words to enable us to get there. Myth is nourished by silence as well as by words.”” -Italo Calvino

Like so many other youngsters growing up, I was drawn to bikes because at some point the “cool” factor made me wild eyed. We’ve all heard the stories about the young kid seeing a big group of patch members blowing down the road as he peaked over the doorframe out the window. At some point though, at least for me, my love for old scoots took a turn in a slightly different direction. After being away from bikes for a long time I was drawn back to it at a point of great turmoil, the details aren’t important, but it was one of the most difficult times in my life. Upon building a new scoot I found myself healing, in a way. I found a sort of piece and rhythm to it … it felt very similar to playing music. I’ve been a drummer for ages and I made a living in Miami playing in BTR 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM

a number of different bands. When I played the kit sometimes I would get into a zone and time would stand still. I unexpectedly found that same feeling in the bikes. In a way, bikes saved my life. So began a deeper connection to building and riding. The cool factor was now just an afterthought; it was all about the “Zen,” all about finding the groove, the pocket. At some point there was synchronization of all these things I was drawn to at a young age … blues, jazz, art, old cars, drums, and old choppers. For me all of these things began to connect and make sense. Sure, I went through the “f@@@ the world” punkskate phase. But that never lasts and it’s counter to the idea of finding the “groove.” It’s like long board surfing vs. short boards. One is about the flow and connecting with

the wave, the other is about attacking and dominating it. So for me, the less is more idea always inspired me … jazz trios, three notes on a blues solo, two wheels and a motor. Coltrane said it best, “You can play a shoestring if you’re sincere.” When approaching a new project I have all these things in my mind in some form or another. Most of the time you are not thinking about it, it just happens and much like the ride when it’s done you learn things on the way. Every week I would walk to my favorite bar in Venice and along the way I would pass a local body shop. All the year’s I lived in the area I never saw a bike in there, but this day I turned and saw what looked like a shovel sitting on a lift. I walked up and as I got closer I realized it was a cherry 1966

sitting in a raked frame. I asked one of the helpers what the deal was. After a phone call, an old-timer came over and proceeded to tell me a story about the owner. The owner moved to a Third World country somewhere in Asia where he could be surrounded by as many women his U.S. dollar could afford. It seems the duty on getting the bike to this country was way too pricey so it was for sale. The old man said it had been sitting for a while, but one kick and it turned over. Cash in hand the bike was mine! I tore it down, kept only the motor, tranny, and wheels … sold everything else. The bike sat for a bit while I could drum up cash and other parts to get it done. The frame and gas tank came in as a trade for some work on a bike build I was doing for Matt Davis of Dice magazine. Matt scored the frame from Scott

Craig. The frame came with some history; just about every bike Scott built was with this frame. I narrowed and frisco’d the tank and added some funky handmade mounts. The front end came in as a trade for some fab work on a gas tank. The oil tank and donor fender were traded for an old bass drum pedal. With everything lying there, I turned on some Coltrane, drank some scotch and searched for the groove. I rode the bike unpainted for a while. It would have stayed that way, but after being asked to bring it the Stay Gold show at Sturgis in ’08, I felt the least I could do was paint it. While I am not a purist and enjoy riding these old bikes more that anything I wanted a little head nod to the era. A quick call to Scott Craig and he painted it up complete with funky acid drops. Women’s World RIDING MY OWN, Myra McElhaney

When I first met my husband Phil, I was excited that he had a motorcycle. I loved riding with a neighborhood guy during high school and looked forward to being on back of a bike again. Phil had a Yamaha 650. He later upgraded to a Goldwing then eventually a Harley-Davidson Tour Glide. We loved riding in the mountains of North Georgia on weekends and occasionally we’d take a longer trip. We rode and camped with another couple on the Natchez Trace. A few years later, with the same couple, we rode from Atlanta to Niagara Falls and back. Along the way we stayed in Bed & Breakfast and quaint hotels, stopping to see sights along the way. Touring around the country was exciting but Sunday afternoon rides in the mountains, with just the two of us, were my favorite. In 2007 Phil was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor. After a year of radiation, chemo and surgery he was able to get back on the bike. We took a weekend motorcycle trip to Ashville, NC with two other couples. It was wonderful to be riding together again. Sadly, the cancer returned soon after that trip. He died in 2009 at only fifty-one years of age. My life changed dramatically. I moved from our home in the suburbs to a high-rise in the city. You know, after a spouse dies the couples don’t include you much anymore so you lose friends, too. Besides, you need single friends when you’re single. After dealing with his death, selling a home, buying another and moving, I approached rebuilding my social life just as I’d always approached business networking. I made a list of other single, divorced and widowed women to call for going out. I needed to keep busy! Soon people were calling me asking if I’d talk with their sister, cousin or neighbor who’d lost a spouse and was struggling to move forward. I always said, “Yes.” In 2006 I published a memoir, Building A Life You Love After Losing the Love of Your Life to share my story and insights as to what helped me. It’s gratifying to know that my story encourages and inspires others to move forward with living a life they love even after tragedy strikes. As I adjusted to my new life I still missed my husband and I missed motorcycle riding–one of those things I could fix! A girlfriend rides her own so I figured that if she could, I could. Ha! Not so easy! My first class was a total fail! It was in the middle of July, 90 degrees and I was terrified. Add to that an instructor that was loud and belligerent. He motioned me to the side of the range, grabbed the handlebars of my bike and stood inches from my face yelling about “popping the clutch!” I didn’t even know what that meant. I got off the bike and walked out of class. I cried all the way home. I’m not a quitter. But I’d quit that class. I was disappointed in myself and embarrassed. I vowed to try again. Someone said a dirt bike is easier to learn on so I took a dirt bike class. That was fun! Then I took another street bike class. I didn’t get my license because I couldn’t do the tight turns in the exam. Later another friend said she was going to take a class so I joined her. This time I passed the test and got that big M on my license! Why would I tell you that embarrassing story? If you’re a woman BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM

who wants to ride don’t let fear or failure keep you from it. If I can do it, you can too! I bought a red Harley-Davidson Softail Slim and named her ‘Rosie the Riveting’ in honor of resilient women in history. As a new rider I continue working to improve my skills. It feels amazing to be riding my own after all these years. Sometimes it seems I can feel my husband riding with me. Now, I’m the one driving! Jackal and I spent some time talking about the SIG P320

gun. I’m learning a great deal about different types of guns, thanks to Jackal’s experience and patient tutelage. Now, I can confidently put this on my gun list of knowledge! Jackal was eager to share his information on this particular gun and the concerns going on with it in the gun community. “The SIG P320 beat out other hand pistols and is currently THE side arm used with military personnel. The military tested many hand pistols and the one the government chose was the SIG P320. I own this gun and love its versatility.” The SIG P320 gun has been compared with the Glock 19. Prior to talking with Jackal about the SIG, I did a little research and saw that the comparison of the Glock was something that came up in many reviews. I asked Jackal what his opinion was about the SIG versus the Glock. “You will always have those folks that are true Glock owners and those that are SIG owners. I personally like the SIG and the Glock equally. There are differences in each gun that I like, but overall, they are somewhat the same.” For those of you reading this article and are gun enthusiasts, you may know that a lot of folks are talking about the failed SIG P320 drop test. The drop test showed that this particular gun discharged BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Jackal’s Gun Talk when it hit the floor. The gun community – both the pro SIG and con SIG – were toe-to-toe at the proverbial line drawn in the sand about this recent revelation. Jackal elaborated on this hot topic, “There is this company that did a test on the SIG P320, dropping the pistol and seeing if it would shoot. This particular pistol does not have a safety. So, the SIG gun company came back saying they would give the owners of these guns a free safety upgrade.” Is the SIG still the best option for the military? Jackal answered with a resounding YES! “I feel like anyone out there wouldn’t drop the pistol in the manner in which it was done where the gun went off. Another important point to make is that the gun went off 1 time out of 40 times dropped. What many may not realize is there are A LOT of guns that will fire when dropped. The SIG P320 is not the only gun that could do this!”

you take the trigger housing out and put in any size you want. If you go to the range and want a full-size pistol, you have that option. Let’s say you want a sub-compact gun. Take out the housing for that and put in the sub-compact unit. There are many more options with this gun. All the different calibers will work with that trigger system as well by removing the slides and the mags.” There are so many things people can do with this gun to personalize it to what they use it for. “I love the SIG and what this one gun can do. I shoot at the range with lots of people that have the 320. Many police officers I shoot with have the Glock as an issued fire arm, but, like me, prefer their personal 320.” In addition, the SIG P320 is a great EDC (every day carry) firearm. It’s light, versatile, and economical! Thank you, Jackal, for yet another great conversation! And thank you, to the readers of our column! If you have questions for Jackal, send him an email

Why does Jackal like the SIG P320 so much? “For me, it’s more user-friendly than the Glock. It’s a clean, modular design, and you can buy different types of systems for the trigger kit. What’s nice about this gun is that you can buy different kits for it instead of having five to eight different firearms. For example,

Craven Moorehead Be Prepared!

You never know what’s going to happen, so you do what you can, right? I had no idea that there was going to be a major storm here in Florida but after seeing what happened in Texas, I started thinking. Harvey tore through there like a banshee and did major destruction before Irma was ever born in our opinion. It opened my eyes to a lot of stuff but I never realized what was yet to come. This article then is a tribute to all the lives and property lost in both of these catastrophes. And the others that followed. The idea and concept that a major storm could hit Florida was something that a lot of people did not take seriously until the forecasters assured us that there would be landfall in our state. And at that point a state of panic ensued and people went somewhat nuts trying to get prepared. I suppose that I was among those ranks, but I never realized how difficult it would be to survive this event. Remember the term “Preppers” ?? The preppers always predicted a major war, bombing or other event that would ‘end the world’ as we know it, but at least they built bomb shelters and stocked MRE’s and ammo plus a myriad of other stuff to survive the end of the world. Well, I suppose they weren’t so far off in their thinking because the panic that I saw here in the middle of the state was inconceivable. There were several things that everyone needed to survive that could NOT be purchased or bargained for. 1. Gas • 2. Water • 3. Ice • 4. Bread • 5. Peanut Butter • 6. Nonperishable foods (canned goods) • 7. Charcoal and lighter fluid These items – just to name a few are simply on the short list of things that you could not get in the ‘before Irma’ days. In my search for other commodities I realized that even though I was prudent, a lot of items could not be purchased anywhere. My trip took me to seven or eight stores, five gas stations (not for gas) and other businesses where I thought I could get some stuff. I was greeted by empty store shelves, chaos and idiocy beyond belief. When something like this happens, I figured people would come together and try to help one another. I suppose I was wrong. I scored four cans of chili at one grocery store and a nice panicked lady told me that there was one case of water left in the discount store right across the parking lot. I ran over there and got

it and was thankful to have drinking water should the power go out. It eventually did. I went to several other stores within 10 miles of where I lived and was lucky enough to get some other staples that I thought we would need. At one store, I was able to get two jars of peanut butter and at another, three cans of soup. Every store I went to was the same scene – empty shelves, panicked citizens and chaos beyond belief. I needed bread. I couldn’t find any anywhere. After visiting what seemed like a million places I stopped at a Publix near Brandon as I was pushing my cart toward the canned food isle, a worker brought out four or five bags of bakery cooked bread that were fresh. I grabbed two of them and I think if I weren’t so big and ugly several terrified shoppers would have killed me for them. But I escaped. With 80% of my list completed I decided to get my spoils back to the house quickly. But I needed ICE!! When I went to the ‘fill your cooler for 99 cents’ place there were a couple of guys out there trying to help. They had a large straight-job refrigerated truck full of pallets with ice on them. For six dollars, I got 40 pounds. That’s a lot of ice for that amount of money and I was thankful. On the way home, I stopped at a small gas station and scored two small bags of charcoal for eight dollars each. Not a bargain, but I thought my prep-trip may be through after eight hours of scavenging. When the lights go down in the city … (a song) When you are without power things change. Yeah, I had a battery powered radio, several flashlights and lanterns that work plus a limited supply of charcoal. But you could only do so much in the daylight so at night you gotta wing it. I have a huge freezer and moved all the perishable food into that with all the ice, frozen pitchers of water and dozens of small bottles of water. Soon, it defrosted leaving a river of water in the house. Items were moved into a couple of large coolers with the frozen bottles, bags of ice and other frozen commodities so that we could survive. We didn’t know how long it would take to get the power back on. For some reason, I thought it would only be off for a few hours, boy was I wrong. It’s tough to sleep at night with the windows open and no breeze but I was a survivor of that misery. On the fourth day, I decided to venture out in the old truck to see if anyone else had electricity or other storm related damage. We weren’t damaged here and no one in the neighborhood seemed to have any either, just tree debris and not too much damage or other stuff. When I passed by the high school that was being used for a shelter until the lights went off, I was surprised to see about nine electric company trucks in the parking lot. They were from ‘Pike’ and not our local company but they had traveled far to help us in this disaster. They eventually got the power back on and I was so thankful. Taking a bath with gallon jugs ain’t no fun, and losing all your food isn’t either. But we all survived and I hope you all did too.

So, until next month, speed safely and don’t stare at the sun for any reason. … CRAVEN Let us know what you think of Craven Moorehead, info@borntoride.com BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 59

Spyke & Mike When Mike, When? What an end to summer, my BTR friends. I hope hurricane Irma did not disrupt your lifestyle too badly. For Mike and me, it was over a week with no power, lots of cleanup, and clearing out the refrigerators at the Sanctuary. By now, most of you Floridians know what it’s like to be windblown at 50, 60, even 70 mph for a short period of time. I on the other hand, have been enjoying that kind of continuous breeze for years. It’s easily done if you just keep tucked in and very aerodynamic. You humans call it hunkered down. “But really Mike, when am I going to get some relief? When does the windshield get mounted on the Fat Bird 2? When do I get my perch back on the handlebars? When can I stop riding on your back or shoulder and not look like I’m holding on for dear life? When? When? When?” “OK Spyke,” Mike babbles, “when the time is right. When the fab work is done. When the nights get colder and the days get shorter. Irma has slowed the transformation of our scoot. But, Craig the painter has assured me that his heart, soul, and hands are working feverishly in getting your mugshot back on the new ride. Until then, it’s class 2 hurricane winds for you!” “Alright, but keep me safe from all those freaks with cell phone cameras that are driving and trying to snap a Kodak moment of us in cruise mode.” Mike scratches my head and comforts me by saying, “Of course Spyke, you can trust me. You are my number one. I’m always looking out for my little girl. Believe it or not, so are a lot of other people out there. You have more friends than I’ll ever have.” “For example, just a few weeks ago, your Facebook page FIND SPYKE, got a post from Austin at Fallen Cycles. Seems he acquired the original Fat Bird at auction in Orlando and was trying to reach out to me. Having seen us ride around many Daytona events, watched you be a crowd pleaser, and read about our misfortune in this great magazine, he felt it was the right thing to do by getting us reunited with a sentimental part from the Ol’e Bird. “After contacting him by phone, having a great conversation, and working out the details all was set. A week later, I received a nicely packaged rear fender at no charge! I just want to say thanks to Austin and the whole crew at Fallen Cycles for doing the human thing. This just goes to show what good karma can do. It happens when you least expect it and sometimes in mysterious ways. If you

ever have a need for any used parts, these guys are the best in motorcycle salvage. Give them a call, 386-872-6363. Or stop by and see them at 526 Magnolia Ave., Daytona Beach and tell them you read about it here in Spyke’s parrot scratch. The next time we ride over you can bet we’re showing up!” For now, Craig has had the new front fender and the original one to use as a template for about a month. Because this piece is a major highlight of Mike’s new ride, he will spend many hours working his magic. Then, in a few weeks, the entire scoot will be his for the rest of the makeover, including the original rear fender to use as a template also. Until then, missing a front fender, we ride like there is no tomorrow and no rain. Mike is only taking me on short trips around town. So, you can find us having fun with our friends at various places like Biff Burger, The Lube, Red Tiki, Bert’s off the Beach, and Sharks Bar and Grill. Speaking of Sharks, many people have asked Mike are they really giving away a free Harley. He tells them, “Show up and find out. Joe Sr., Joe Jr., and the staff work hard at making this a really cool place! They have been going all out for bikers every Thursday with great live music, food specials, and bucket/drink deals you can’t find anywhere else. When you do arrive and it’s your maiden voyage there, tell them we sent you or you’ve seen their ad in BTR and your first drinks are two for one! “Sign up to win the Harley given away on Dec. 21st. Then, come back every week for extra chances to own this fine piece of machinery. There’s going to be one hell of a party that night as you must be present to win. What a great Christmas present it’s going to make for some lucky biker!” I cackle, “Hell yes! And as a special treat, you’ll get to ride around the parking lot with me on your shoulder. Just think about what kind of holiday card that would make for you to hand out!” Mike bellows, “OK Spyke, make like Santa’s elves and get your story done by deadline or no one gets any goodies. It’s Thursday, zero chance of rain, and your friends are waiting for me to chauffeur your feathered ass up there. Sammy Davis Jr. is playing and your backup presence has been requested. I’ve got my man bag on the Fat Bird 2 and it’s ready to get my knees in the breeze, your wings in the wind, and its wheels rolling down the road.”

Ray V. Gordon is the owner and founder of a new business based in SW Florida called Leather Lid Inserts. He’s coined the phrase “We take the sag out of the bag” because that is exactly what they do. Ray has been riding motorcycles since he was 14-years-old and has watched the motorcycle industry grow and is glad to be a part of what it is today. After 35 years of owning and operating a successful aluminum company in Fort Myers, Ray sold the business so he could retire— he thought and bought himself a new Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic. And just like everyone else with leather saddlebags his bags started to sag and cave-in. He saw a need to fix this

problem. Ray says, “Starting this new business was something I just fell into by fixing my own saddlebags, and then friends of friends and others wanted me to fix their saddlebags too!” As an inventor and entrepreneur, Ray took his creative background and put his skills to work by experimenting with several different types of materials to finally come up with a patented lid and bag reinforcement kit that is designed to help keep the original shape of any leather saddlebag made on the market. So, if you’re tired of looking at your caved-in leather saddlebags, or if you have brand-new bags and want to prevent them from ever caving-in, please keep Leather Lid Inserts in mind. For all your leather saddlebag needs (insert kit, replacement belt straps, buckles, quick release) as a do-it-yourselfer or if you want them installed for you, visit www.LeatherLidInserts.com or call office 239-543-8360 to find the area dealer installer who is closest to you. Christian Motorcyclists Association Recently I had the opportunity to attend a biker church service at a motorcycle dealership. It was good to see a lot of old faces, along with a few faces I had not met before. There was a band playing some great tunes, and since it was really hot, there were bottles of cold water being passed out for free, how cool (pardon the pun)! When I pulled in to the event I noticed some dark clouds on the horizon, but I wasn’t worried about them as my phone radar said we were clear of the storm. It was a great service enjoyed by all, but as we got ready to leave the rain began to fall. At first it was a strong drizzle, but the rain took no time turning into a downpour. Over the next little while the rain went back and forth, getting better or worse, and just about the time we started to mount up the monsoon came back. To make matters worse, the storm was traveling East, and I was headed East to get home. I’m not afraid to ride in the rain, but I hadn’t been on my bike in a while, so I wasn’t looking forward to riding on wet roads. As I thought about my situation, I realized that it wasn’t all that far to the house, and when I got home I could change into dry BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM

clothes, so what was there to concern me? It would be a refreshing, cool ride on a warm summer mourning, it might even be an enjoyable time! This reminded me that Jesus promised us in the Bible, “My peace I give you” (John 14:27). He lived a life full of challenges and hurts, and He has experienced every problem that may come our way. Because of this, when things in our lives look difficult or worrisome, He gives us His peace. Simply put, His peace becomes our peace. I believe that promise of peace factored into my thought process, and made me realize that I could look at the positive side of the situation, through that wonderful peace that comes from Jesus! By trusting in Him as our Savior and Lord, we open our hearts and let His peace, and blessings, move into our lives. He wants our hearts to be free from stress or trouble, to enjoy life and be full of joy. When Jesus is in our hearts, so too is His peace. So how did my ride home go? I got soaked to the bone, but I did my best to count my blessings and remember it was just a 20mile ride, and there was a peace in my heart that kept me smiling! The best part of all of this is His peace can be applied to every area of our lives and to every challenge. Trust Jesus today and experience for yourself His wonderful and powerful peace! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
